Ken Burns affect driving me crazy.

Every still picture I import has the Ken Burns affect. I highlight all the stills and even after changing the preferences to 'fit', I still get the ken burns affect on all my stills.
Shouldn't the default be 'fit' instead of Ken Burns? Especially since you can't turn the Ken Burns affect off for a set of pics . . . even though through preferences, it should work. What is the solution?

Hi Geysser,
Yes, the default for new pictures added to a project is the KB effect. In project preferences you can change this to "Fit" or "Crop" for each project, as you've already seen. After changing it, the new effect will only be applied to all newly added stills but not to the ones that were already in the project.
However, it's fast and easy to change the effect on a batch of stills by using copy-paste:
Select a clip that has your desired effect and press cmd-c (or choose Edit/Copy). Now select all the clips that you want to apply that effect to and press option-cmd-R (or choose Edit/Paste adjustments/Crop).
The +Copy/Paste adjustments+ option works great for other stuff, too (like applying audio settings or video effects to a bunch of clips).

  • Ken Burns is driving me crazy

Well not so much Ken himself as his effect. It seems to be the default mode for all iPhoto slideshows.
Even if I go to all the trouble to turn it off when I create a slideshow, when I try and access the same slideshow via the remote, it becomes Burnsian.
I crop most of my photos, so they don't have a lot of extraneous material in them, and I end up getting lots of missing heads. Any suggestions? I mean, besides ditching the remote.

    Luba:
There is no Key in iPhoto's preferences that can turn of the default of the KB being on. It's an annoyance that we'll just have learn to live with tolerate.

  • Ken Burns Affect does not work....

Ok, these are the steps that I'm taking to work with my photos. I import them and wait untill they render, and once they are finished rendering I move them down to the timeline. I then press the tab for pictures and it gives me the button for ken burns affect, but when I adjust what I want done then I press the button to render it does it but it does not apply the affect. What should I do? Reinstall? Thanks.

    atxguy,
Before you use the Ken Burns effect are you selecting the clip you wish it applied to?
    Highlighted clips will turn blue.

  • FCP - Ken Burns affect

Is there a way to modify still images in FCP similar to the Ken Burns affect found in imovie?
I have been unable to find anything in the manual.

Here is a video tutorial from our resident guru Shane Ross:

These video tutorials are pretty good and there are loads of them on creative cow...a nice way to keep in touch with what's out there.

  • Export iPHOTO slideshow with ken Burns affects

Is there any way to create a slideshow in iPhoto with Ken Burns affects default dissolve between slides and then export it into FCX?

the audio associated with that set of photos was a piece of music off of an audio CD that had been transferred to iTunes for the purpose of making this section in the DVD. It's not a big problem that the music didn't transfer, since I can add it back into FCX. Thank you so much for your concern and help. This was a very key bit of info that you provided me. Thanks again. bill

  • Wavy movement of Ken Burns

I know similar issues have been brought up with the Ken Burns affect being choppy but I haven't seen anyone point out that they're seeing it as 'wavy'.
What I see is that photos with contrasting lines in them (in this case, kitchen cabinets against walls) look like they're wavy when panning with the Ken Burns affect. Its almost nausiating.
Is there ANY way to do away with this? It seems to be much worse once the video is transitioned to DVD using iDVD and played on either a computer or a TV.

You problem is not the same as the link above described (i.e. the old iMovie bug which renders jaggy stills from _non-Ken Burnsed_ images).
You applied Ken Burns so those images should be immune to THAT problem.
I guess what you are seeing is suboptimal subpixel rendering with Ken Burns. Sometimes the images may by TOO sharp so they induce interlace flicker when viewed on a TV. This is caused by the fact that a thin and sharp 1-line vertical object is visible only half of the time and even a 2-line vertical object may seem to jump up and down on an interlaced TV (see interlace flicker):
    http://www.lurkertech.com/lg/fields/fields.html
Some applications intentionally slightly blur images to reduce the flicker (Photo To Movie's higher quality setting, for example). Also in Toast Titanium 7 the output doesn't flicker.
You can reduce interlace flicker on a TV with image editing applications. One nice approach is to slightly blur the input still image with 90° (vertical) Motion Blur (use 1 pixel value to PAL/NTSC 576/480 vertical input resolutions -- if the vertical resolution of the input still is larger you have to increase the filter's pixel value accordingly. For example: if the input still is 2048 x 1536, use 3 pixel value in the filter because 1536/576=2.7).
The idea is to cut down on vertical resolution (excess of which causes interlace flicker on an interlaced TV) without compromising horizontal resolution. Another method is to apply a small Gaussian blur to the image. Just using a smaller resolution (640x480) in the input images also prevents flicker but the images may appear slightly fuzzy instead (and you really should not zoom into such low resolution image with Ken Burns).
So: you might try Photo To Movie instead of Ken Burns and see if it is any better. AFAIR there is a Photo To Movie demo.

  • "show photo settings" and ken burns glitch? please help :(

    hi, i'm having a problem,
my software is the latest version, so is quicktime, all my updates are up to date, i'm not using an external hardrive.
i was creating a music video composed of all still pictures and everything was going fine untill today.
the "show photo settings" display box has a glitch or something.
the slide bars for the ken burns effect have disappeared.
a checkmark on the imovie display is now visible and the apply and reverse buttons have disappeared.
i can no longer exit out the photo settings window the same way as before.
when pictures are added to the timeline they are much too long.
i'm unable to keep the ken burns affect box checked, it keeps unchecking itself and it wont allow me to change any photo settings on certain pictures and on the ones it will allow me to when i press "apply" or the checkmark it stalls and wont render the file (the red line doesn't fill and just stays there)
when changing the length or display time of the picture it will delete itself and replace it with the next picture in line.
can anyone help me? i've spent a massive amount of time on this video and would like to finish it. i dont know what the problem is. maybe i clicked something i shouldn't have?
    thanks in advance

i'm estimating around _1000 pictures_ ... they are all being stored on the desktop ...
    WOW!
... how long does your poor Mac need for booting??
The >40y old Xerox metaphor of a Desktop/Folders/trashbin had the concept of simulating reallife.. would you store ~1000 pics on your desk while glueing them into an album (ever glued 1k pics into an album?) ...?
I assume, your System is 'cluttered'. totally cluttered.
try to clean up ... in Finder, clean your File 'System'... create folders (many folders...), use the pre-installed structure your Mac came with (how about storing pictures in... ehm, Pictures?), why not using iLife as intended (import into iM from iPhoto), why not using the integrated 'File Management' of iPhoto to create albums, to give your mass of pics some structure, finally consider to use approbiate apps (if you try to create a stopmotion-like movie, QTpro or Boinx' istopmotion are better tools) ...
keep in mind, a Mac needs at last 10-15GB free on internal drive to act normal.
export as much as you can to external drives (firewire connected, 'MacOsExtended' formatted), don't forget to give these harddrives structure too .. you know how to create Folders in Finder?
after all is set and done, your desktop is clean, everything is in its place, use Disk Utility to check&repair... finally, reboot your Mac, give it a chance to 'recreate' itself in better shape
... and there's still a high chance, that the fragile file management of the 20$ consumer app iMovie is still overwhelmed by >1000 stills in one single project...

  • Ken Burn pictures look really low quality

Putting high quality pictures into movie and when I ad ken Burns affect they look very low quality as the effect is in process. Do I need to add a lower quality pic? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
    Keith

they look very low quality as the effect is in process.
    usual advice:
never judge pic quality within iM (lowered preview quality) nor on a computer either.. (iM is for TV delivery.. iM≤6 ... )

  • Help! ken burns/ old zoom in zoom out option

Hey any help is appreciated. I'm making a picture slideshow in imovie '09 and I'm not completely thrilled with having it fit to screen or the ken burns affect. Is there anyway to add a slight zoom in/ slight zoom out to the picture like there was in the old imovie? Please let me know any advice if you can i have to finish this movie by tomorrow! Thank you!

You don't say if you are editing standard definition DV-NTSC or HD, but I guess you are talking SD - both for your sequence setting and your TV set.
    Some comments:
    - any picture of any resolution will be converted to the sequence resolution (720x480 in DV-NTSC) when you edit the picture to the timeline. This means that quality will necessarily degrade; this cannot be avoided, but this is true also for iMovie. Motion bu itself should not further degrade quality.
    - it's important how you export your movie for iDVD: use Export/QuickTime Movie (not Using QuickTime Conversion).
    - as Ian suggests you may try de-interlace filter or the blur filter
    - I suggest you to watch the movie on your TV set during editing: connect the TV to your Mac firewire port: use a D/A converter (bridge) converting firewire connection to analog connection; you may use also a camcorder with pass-through. This allows you to check the movie quality as it will appear when watching the DVD: most important for stills and color corrections.
Note that the still in the viewer, before editing to the timeline, has the quality of the original still before its conversion to the sequence settings; so this is not meaningful.

  • Importing photo's & using ken burns

    I'm importing photo's into i movie OK.
They are fine, and run as a movie in clip viewer until I add a Ken Burns effect. Then they go Black in the clip pane (disappear).
They return to view only if I remove the ken burns affect.
    What's up with that?

I found my problem, after numerous hours of frustration.
the movie has to be saved into "movies" icon on main hard drive. Where all the effects, etc. are stored to go with the movie project. I was saving my project to an alternative file on my secondary hard drive.

  • Turning off Ken Burns?

    Hi
All my slideshows play with the Ken Burns affect whether the 'Ken Burns Effect' is checked or not.
I'm getting sick of it as with it on there's so much of one's photos that gets chopped off.
Can anyone please tell me how I turn it off?
    thanks
    ps - Photo 5.0.4

Perhaps you're checking the KB button on the "main" menu for the slideshow. That actually changes only the setting for the image that is currently selected. Try using the "Settings" button and deselect the "Automatic KB effect."

  • How do I adjust Ken Burns Default when importing Clips?

Creating a slide show in iMovie and dragged a large number of jpeg photos in as clips. iMovie proceeded to render them all with the Ken Burns effect. Unfortunately, the end product displays the zoomed in close up. And it's zoomed to the max (5.00). Consequently, I can't really see what's in the clip.
How can I manage this? Would be very happy if the Ken Burns effect wasn't applied until I brought the clip into the Timeline.
    Thanks!

Good news! I solved this problem but through a variation of the suggestions offered in this thread.
First, I went to the MEDIA panel, -> PHOTOS, -> iPhoto and clicked the arrow down. This gave me access to the entire library of photos I have accumulated for the last year which, thankfully, is not large as I am new to digital photography. I then referred to the iMovie Clip line for the Photo id# assigned by my camera and searched for the corresponding number in the original photo in iPhoto I had imported to the iMovie Clips panel.
Second, finding the photo on my timelime for which I wanted to remove the "Ken Burns" effect, I chose the original in the iPhoto library and selected SHOW PHOTO SETTINGS. (After that first photo, the "Ken Burns settings dialog" appears by default for each subsequent photo.)
Third, I turned the Ken Burns settings off and selected APPLY. This closed the settings window and inserted the revised photo AFTER the last photo on the iMovie timeline.
Finally, I selected the last photo added to the timeline. I then "cut and pasted" this new photo sans the Ken Burns affect to the appropriate place in the timeline.
This was a fairly lengthy pain-in-the-butt process but it worked for me.
There were no issues related to storage or file format as the photos came directly from my Canon Powershot camera directly to iPhoto.
Thanks for your interest. Hope this helps others.

  • Rendering Ken Burns Effect

So I just got a new imac yesterday Aug. 5th 07 and trying to my 1st iMovie, and everytime I try to use the 'Ken Burns Effect' on photos I've taken with iPhoto it just sits there and does not render. (red bar at bottom of photo) and if I try to exit it says it needs to render clips or lose changes. So i've updated to the latest version of iMovie etc. open/closed, rebooted, created new projects...nothing works. HELP!

Hey I had a similar situation. I too purchased a 20" iMac around Aug 1, 2007. For some reason, in iMovie HD (6.0.3) every time I used the Ken Burns affect, my footage wouldn't render! I'd just see a burgundy red line, that didn't move. Oh so frustrating.
Getting the latest QuickTime Update fixed the problem. Don't know how, but it did.

  • "Ken Burns" imovie 06 project opened in FCE 4

Opening an iMovie 06 project in FCE 4 works great, except I'm confused about still photos to which I had added the Ken Burns affect to in iMovie. In FCE they still move as expected when just viewing the timeline, but when I open up Motion tab for an image in the Viewer, there is no Scaling or Centering listed. I thought maybe FCE converts photos to movies to maintain the effect, but they are still just JPGs.
How are these images moving, if there is nothing changed in the Motion tab!?
I'm hoping to make some quick Ken Burns effect slideshow in iMovie and then do more editing in FCE...
    Thanks!

I have no chance to test it now on my Mac, but it seems strange to me that FCE can convert Ken Burn effects from an iMovie project into FCE Motion keyframes. FCE more likely imports an already rendered motion clip from iMovie. Probably it also imports the original JPGs, but the clip you are viewing in the timeline is more likely a clip where the original Ken Burn Effect cannot be modified.
In any case you can do a simple test: create a test iMovie project with a single image, apply the KB effect to that image, import that project into a new test FCE project: it's then easy to check what is and what is not imported.

  • Ken Burns for slide shows?

Why isn't there a Ken Burns affect for slide shows?  This should have been in Lightroom 3!
