Ken Burns - Default to all but 2

I have a slideshow with about 400 slides in it. I have defaulted it use Ken Burns effect for all the slides. Looks wonderful. I love the randomness of the Ken Burns -- works well.
I want to put in two title slides in the beginning, but I don't want them to have Ken Burns. For the two front slides I click the Ken Burns Effect Box so it is on, and move the Start and End buttons so it stays the same for both pictures.
However, when I play the slideshow, it does Ken Burns the two in the beginning, but not with my settings.
Any idea how I can default the entire slide show to use the default Ken Burns, except for my first two?
I don't want to load into Imovie and have control all of the pictures, nor do I want to turn off the default ken burns for all 400 pictures and manually set it.
Thanks,Dennis

Dennis:
You'll have to turn off the KB effect in the Settings pane and then turn it on for each of the slides you want with the KB check box at the bottom and the start and stop slider. The Settings pane overrides the KB checkbox and its settings at the bottom.
You can create the slideshow without the first two photos in iPhoto and export to Quicktime. Then use PhotoPresenter to create a slideshow with the two extra photos and the QT movie file. PhotoPresenter will add play (and export to QT) both movie and still files.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Is it possible to undo the Ken Burns effect on all photos at once in iMovie, rather than clicking "crop" and "fit" on each individual photo?

Is it possible to undo the Ken Burns effect on all photos at once in iMovie, rather than clicking "crop" and "fit" on each individual photo?

Hey Villiam,  Kevin is referring to setting a movement on a photo setting keyframes (like zoom out to in), right-clicking on Motion, and choose save as preset.  This will put that movement into your presets folder under Effects.  I am going to try this on my next montage and see if I can find some efficiencies.  Thanks Kevin, that was a great tip!!!
Also thanks to Jim.  I spent like 30 min looking at all the keyboard shortcuts.  It's a little overwhelming to establish a solid shortcut format that a team of editors can learn and use.  I'm going to be trying the FCP short cuts, then go back to the default.  It looks like the PR default has a lot of existing and helpful shortcuts assigned already.  It's just going to take getting used to a new platform.
I'm still looking for tools and/or methods to allow an editor to assemble a 60 second montage with 10 photos, VO and music in 30 minutes.  It's going to be a challenge but I think it's possible with the right innovative process.  I'll still challenge anyone to find a way to quickly assemble a montage in an assembly line or template-based fashion using Adobe Premiere CC where there's on-screen text, advanced transitions, timed to VO, etc.
I think I'm dreaming for a tool to automatically do this within Premiere, while I think the answer for now might just be customizing motion presets and creating a favorites folder of transitions that can be dragged onto each clip.  I'll see if there’s a way to apply a set of transitions or motion presets to a series of photos on the timeline opposed to doing it one by one.  I can see this solution being important as video montages are becoming more popular in our industry, and the faster we can make them using a professional software package like Premiere the more prosperous we will be.

  • Can I turn off the Ken Burns effect from all stills at once?

I am using iMovie 09.  I am creating a slideshow.  I want to turn off the Ken Burns effect from all stills.  Is there a way to do this in one operation?
    Mary Lou

Yes. Select one still. Open the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool on the middle Toolbar. Set it to FIT (for letterboxing) or to CROP (for it to fill the screen, but cut off the top and bottom). This will turn off Ken Burns.
Now select the photo you just adjusted and EDIT/COPY (or Command-C).
Now click EDIT/SELECT ALL (or Command-A) to select all photos.
Finally, click EDIT/PASTE ADJUSTMENTS/CROP ADJUSTMENTS to apply to all photos.

Yes, you can select multiple clips then Adjust, Crop, click on "Fit".

  • How do I adjust Ken Burns Default when importing Clips?

Creating a slide show in iMovie and dragged a large number of jpeg photos in as clips. iMovie proceeded to render them all with the Ken Burns effect. Unfortunately, the end product displays the zoomed in close up. And it's zoomed to the max (5.00). Consequently, I can't really see what's in the clip.
How can I manage this? Would be very happy if the Ken Burns effect wasn't applied until I brought the clip into the Timeline.
    Thanks!

Good news! I solved this problem but through a variation of the suggestions offered in this thread.
First, I went to the MEDIA panel, -> PHOTOS, -> iPhoto and clicked the arrow down. This gave me access to the entire library of photos I have accumulated for the last year which, thankfully, is not large as I am new to digital photography. I then referred to the iMovie Clip line for the Photo id# assigned by my camera and searched for the corresponding number in the original photo in iPhoto I had imported to the iMovie Clips panel.
Second, finding the photo on my timelime for which I wanted to remove the "Ken Burns" effect, I chose the original in the iPhoto library and selected SHOW PHOTO SETTINGS. (After that first photo, the "Ken Burns settings dialog" appears by default for each subsequent photo.)
Third, I turned the Ken Burns settings off and selected APPLY. This closed the settings window and inserted the revised photo AFTER the last photo on the iMovie timeline.
Finally, I selected the last photo added to the timeline. I then "cut and pasted" this new photo sans the Ken Burns affect to the appropriate place in the timeline.
This was a fairly lengthy pain-in-the-butt process but it worked for me.
There were no issues related to storage or file format as the photos came directly from my Canon Powershot camera directly to iPhoto.
Thanks for your interest. Hope this helps others.

  • Ken Burns default is "Zoom In" so why does it randomly "Zoom Out?"

I first noticed that the default zoom in was inexplicably and randomly reversing when I applied KB in one go to a bunch of selected stills.
Thinking that applying it to multiple images at once may be the cause, I tested it on a series of single photos.
    The results were similar.
Sometimes the first 3 or 4 would be OK and then random slides would start zooming out. Occasionally the zoom direction would reverse on alternate pictures.
Just in case there was something peculiar about the different clips, I duplicated one several times but still got the random zoom when I applied KB.
I use 2 ways of applying the KB effect to still images but they both give random zoom directions:-
The first method is to select KB using the Crop tool in the Viewer.
This image shows the correct default but the next 3 I selected were all reversed even though I did not touch the "Reverse" button at the top.
The other method is to select KB in the Inspector.
Could some of you try to replicate my random results by testing on at least 6 photos?
More importantly, can you give a reason or suggest a cure (other than telling me to manually adjust each image).

  • All pictures randomly changed to Ken Burns

    Hey -
So I've been working on this project in iMovie. I wanted to change one picture to have a ken burns effect with a specific timing so I clicked on it went to photo settings and changed it. All of my pictures are now the ken burns effect with it's same quality. Unfortunately I had saved it before realizing this and can't go back. I tried selecting all photos or even individual photos and unchecking ken burns and then updating but they all refuse to change from ken burns. I can't change the timing on any of them and I can't take the ken burns effect off. I'd really rather not go through all the photos and re-import them to try and get rid of this.
    Thanks!

Hi Mike - there is a bug in HD 6 that dumps the original import of the photo into the imovie trash after you have re-edited it. Thus imovie no longer has the original to work from, so it produces a black screen and no further editing can be done.
BUT - so long as you have not meantime emptied the trash, the workaround is to drag the pics from imovie's trash back onto the Clips Pane. Failing that the only solution is to import the original pics to the Clips pane again.

  • Ken Burns affect driving me crazy.

Every still picture I import has the Ken Burns affect. I highlight all the stills and even after changing the preferences to 'fit', I still get the ken burns affect on all my stills.
Shouldn't the default be 'fit' instead of Ken Burns? Especially since you can't turn the Ken Burns affect off for a set of pics . . . even though through preferences, it should work. What is the solution?

    Hi Geysser,
Yes, the default for new pictures added to a project is the KB effect. In project preferences you can change this to "Fit" or "Crop" for each project, as you've already seen. After changing it, the new effect will only be applied to all newly added stills but not to the ones that were already in the project.
However, it's fast and easy to change the effect on a batch of stills by using copy-paste:
Select a clip that has your desired effect and press cmd-c (or choose Edit/Copy). Now select all the clips that you want to apply that effect to and press option-cmd-R (or choose Edit/Paste adjustments/Crop).
The +Copy/Paste adjustments+ option works great for other stuff, too (like applying audio settings or video effects to a bunch of clips).

  • Can I fine tune the Ken Burns effect?

I'm using iPhoto 6 for the first time - making a slide show. I turned off the default Ken Burns effect for all slides, but I'm manually setting the KB effect on some slides. I like the ability to specify the starting view and the ending view - such as starting the view with a close-up of a bottle of wine, then zooming back to show the table full of food and the people around it, but....
Is it possible to "fine tune" the KB effect as follows: Have it show the starting view for a specified period of time (e.g. one second), then specify the transition time (e.g. 3 seconds), then have it show the final view for a specified period of time (e.g. 2 seconds).
I.e., I'd like to set up the KB effect so that it "lingers" on the starting view and ending view for a time period that I specify. Is this possible? (If not, this would be a great feature to add in a future release.)

You can kinda do that in iPhoto. It's possible to set individual slide display times with the Adjust pane in the slideshow mode if you don't have the Fit slideshow to Music option selected. You can also set transitions and speed of transition.
To get music to end at the end you will have to estimate the time of the slideshow and use music with a time close to that time. I use a blank, black slide at the end of my slideshow so that the music will end to a blank screen if I miss the timing a bit instead of starting over.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Why is ken burns effect not working on individual slides I have amended when sent to iDVD

When making a slideshow in iPhoto, I changed the zoom and scan on individual slides as instructed in the Help dialog; these showed perfectly when played.  However, when I shared the slideshow to iDVD, those particular slides were just 'still' and there was no Ken Burns effect at all.  Why did this happen?

The Slideshow was created in iPhoto and then shared to iDVD.  The Ken Burns effect works on all the photos that used the basic "Ken Burns' setting.  However, on some of the photos I tried to amend the scanning to zoom into particular faces or parts of the photo.  When I played the slideshow in iPhoto, these amended photos were exactly as I wanted, but after 'sharing' it and viewing it in iDVD, those photos I had altered were 'frozen' and the Ken Burns effect did not work at all, neither the automatic version, nor the specific way I had set it.  All the other photos still had the Ken Burns effect as expected.  I am using  iPhoto 11, 9.1.5, I haven't had this problem in the past.
If you have any ideas why this should have happened I'd be grateful.
    Thanks

  • Ken Burns effect locked?

I have imported images from iphoto to idvd to make a movie.
I have been re-arranging images within idvd to my satisfaction and added music.
All images have the Ken Burns effect which I am trying to remove, but my efforts so far have proved unsuccessful.
I would like to have KB on certain selected images, not on all.
Apple support was unable to help saying that the file could be corrupted.
When I start a new test project, all is well, ie: I have control of adding KB or removing it.
I do not want to start the project again from scratch,so my question is...Can KB be locked?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the discussion!
Can you clarify a couple things for us, Everton, for it's not exactly clear what you're trying to do, and in which application...
I get the feeling that although you've posted in the iMovie forum, you're not creating an iMovie slideshow, right? You're creating a slideshow in either iDVD or iPhoto, I suspect.
You said you imported photos to iDVD and have re-arranged them there. That can be done in iDVD. It's possible to import photos and create your slideshow there.
But then you said you're trying to remove the Ken Burns Effect from select slides. Trouble is, I don't know of any way to add (or remove) the Ken Burns Effect in a slideshow created in iDVD, and that's where I get confused. The Ken Burns Effect feature isn't part of iDVD. (I may have missed it. If so, please point me in the right direction.)
The slideshows we create in iPhoto, on the other hand, do let us add the Ken Burns Effect to ALL the slides randomly, or add it to individual slides, or a combination of both. (The Settings button of the iPhoto slideshow lets us include it to all the slides.)
After we configure a iPhoto slideshow we can send it to iDVD, where it arrives as a movie. But we can't re-arrange the slides nor edit any features in iDVD — it's not that kind of slideshow. It's a movie.
So, it may be that you're trying to do something in iDVD that just can't be done — edit the Ken Burns Effect configured in an iPhoto slideshow. It may be that your editing should be done in iPhoto BEFORE sending the iPhoto slideshow to iDVD.
It's also possible you've created two different kinds of slideshows in your iDVD project, one created by dragging photos to iDVD, the other created by iPhoto. In that case, the iPhoto slideshow may include the Ken Burns Effect but the iDVD slideshow would not. To modify the Ken Burns Effect features, you have to edit the slideshow in iPhoto and re-import it to iDVD.
When it comes to making slideshows, we have an abundance of riches. iLife perhaps offers us too many ways to make them, which can lead to some confusion.

  • Black screen when trying to apply Ken Burns effect

I drag a clip to the timeline, click on media-show photo settings, then the box for ken burns effect shows up but the screen goes black and it says it doesn't recognize the file. I enlarged, dragged and it still doesn't work. It worked earlier in the day...? I defragmented and made more disk space. What could the problem be?!?!?

Ok, I've read what has been posted, but it doesn't work for me. My situation: Macbook Pro, 2.16 ghz, 100gig drive mostly filled up. So, I've attached a USB Western Digital 1 tb drive to do video work. I previously used a WD 500 gb drive. I don't remember, but this may be the first movie that I've done since upgrading to OS 10.
Anyway, using the WD drive, the first time I tried using KB effect was 2 wks ago and got the black picture after applying KB. So, I did without. Same thing happened again yesterday. I perused the subject here, did all those things, and the same thing happened again.
Then, I moved the iMovie file to my computer and tried it and it worked. I moved the file to the external drive and it still worked. BUT, it wouldn't let me apply KB using the file on the WD drive. Back to the computer and it worked again.
So, any one got any ideas as to why it will work on the computer but not on the external drive, at least in the application phase?
    Thanks for your attention.

  • Thmes and Ken Burns Effect

All images used are still photos at least 5x7 inches @ 300ppi. I like the "Themes" feature in iMovie, but when i drop the photos in, they seem quite "soft" as the Theme goes through its motion. Also; when I preview the Ken Burns effect, the photos look fantastic on the screen as I zoom and Pan. However, when I hit the "Apply" button, the images soften. Any explanation for these two questions? One more question please, would a more expensive software product produce sharper results? Thanks very much. Wayne from Studio 24

    Hi Wayne
I'm not so familiar with Ken Burns but can share some thoughts.
1 - If I would use KB in an iMovie project I would definitly NOT use the Share/Export
to iDVD function within iMovie BUT
    a) Close iMovie
    b) find the project icon/folder
    c) Ctrl-click on it and Show package.
    d) in this there are a folder -> Shared Movies -> iDVD
    e) in this there is a QT movie nnnnnnn.mov
    - You can test this with QT-player to see that it is OK -
START A NEW iDVD project - so that old material will not interfere.
    f) drop this into an open theme in iDVD (just inside the edge of the
window) and save it as a desktop image
(if iDVD prior HD/5 You have to add a hack to make this possibly
    named HPfurz and install it)
Test this with Apple DVD-player - OK then burn it with iDVD
or Toast if You have and don’t want to re-code the movie.
2 - I use more and more FinalCut Express HD 3.5 and in this there are no
Ken Burn as a function but there are a much more powerful function to lay
out motions by hand and in a very precise way. And here You have a really
    super quality on Your picture.
BUT on the other hand FCE has a rather steep learning curve and to me lots
of trial and error. But it's much more fun than any coputer games I came across
to date. AND it costs !
    Yours Bengt W

  • Selecting photo then clicking "Fit" does NOT turn off the Ken Burns effect.

Trying to wean from iMovieHD.  I'm having trouble mastering what seems to be more limited Ken Burns effect functionality in iMovie11.   I don't seem to have the range, say, left-to-right, as I did in either iPhoto or in iMovie HD.
So, I figured for now I'd turn off the Ken Burns effect on all the stills in this project.  I've tried selecting one photo, getting into the Fit/Crop/KB effect viewer, then clicking Fit, then Done.  But the photo keeps the KB effect that had been applied to it.
I tried changing all photos in Preferences and that didn't change anything either.
Hopefully I'm just missing something?  Thanks for any help, everybody...

Nevermind.  Got it.  As I'd hoped, user error.

  • How to stop KEN BURNS

When looking at photo in front row how can you stop the KEN BURNS, I have created slideshows in iPhoto with no ken burns and my music, but when I select that slideshow with front row it just seems to ken burns and default music.
    What is I'm doing wrong?

alright, I figured out the reason why it wasn't using the settings that I specified. You have to change the slideshow settings in every album that you create. I had changed the settings only for the Library, so every time I had a different album playing in Front Row it had its own unique settings. Just hit "Play" in the bottom right corner of iPhoto in the desire album or Library and change the settings. They should stick for Front Row.
