Ken burns effect won't die

I want to globally turn off the Ken Burns effect for my 722 slides in my iMove slide show. I have clicked on Project Properties, Timing, Fit in Frame, apply to all.
But still it won't go away. I really don't want to do one at a time. What else can I do?

Click on one of the thumbnail images in the project timeline, then select "Edit > Select All" from the menu. All clips in the project will now be highlighted with a yellow border.
Now click on the small gear icon on one of the images. From the drop-down menu select "Cropping & Rotation". (Alternatively, click on the Crop, Rotate & Ken Burns tool in the centre toolbar - or simply press the C key on the keyboard).
In the Viewer, select Fit (in the top left corner). All clips will now be changed to Fit.
It's best when starting a new project to choose your preference from "File > Project Properties", then make a selection for the item "Initial Photo Placement". iMovie's default is Ken Burns (as you've discovered).

  • Ken burns effect won't work

    hi everyone
i'm trying to export a slideshow into a quicktime movie maintaining the ken burns effect, but the quicktime movie file won't show the effect - even if in the slideshow settings the "automatic ken burns effect" is ticked on (when i watch the slideslow on the screen, before exporting it, the effect is there).
    do you have any suggestions?
another question: can you recommend a picture size? the quicktime movie will be, together with a video created qith FCE, on a dvd.
    thanks guys in advance

Did you try the other account approach that GLO suggested? That can tell you if it's a system wide issue or just one associated with your particular account.
What you should have is your Receipts folder, other that those two subfolders, are many .pkg files which represent software that has been installed on your Mac. Those packages tell the Software Update and other installers what version is already installed so it can decide if an update is required.
Have you tried using the Share->Send to iDVD menu option to get the slideshow into iDVD?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Ken Burns effect won't work with imovie 6.0.3

I'm hopeful to find a way to use the Ken Burns effect in my 6.0.3 HD imovie. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I can't get it to work.

Did you empty iMovie's trash after creating your clips? Did you previously apply the Ken Burns effect to that particular clip and now want to change the settings?
If you already had the clip/photo imported using the Ken Burns effect, and then emptied the trash, you cannot redo the KB settings. It is a bug in iMovie. You will get the black frame when you try. The only thing you can do is reimport the photo.
Here is an explanation of the problem (Thanks to Matti Haveri) :http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHD_6_bugs.html#stillupdate

  • IMovie 6.0.3 won't render Ken burns effects or Themes

I'm working in iMovie 6.0.3. Whenever I try to apply a Ken Burns effect or a theme, the red "render" bar completes, but then I just end up with a frames of empty black the same length as whatever I had tried to put there.
I tried deleting the com.apple.imovie file in the Preferences.
I used the disk utility to restore permissions.
    I emptied my caches.
    I've restarted my computer.
Do anyone have any suggestions of what I could try?
    Thanks!

Just saw this June thread - I have iMovie 6.0.4 and am having this exact problem. I can't believe that there aren't more threads about it. This is the first video I've done since upgrading to OS 10.5 and iLife 7 and then importing the old iMovie 6.0.4 for obvious reasons.
I filled the timeline with photos, set them to the music, then previewed Ken Burns Effect and it looks great. But when I tried to update using KBE and all I get is a BLACK clip that acts like a blank in my timeline. If I apply KBE directly to a photo in the photo tray the same thing happens. KBE is completely unavailable to me!
Let's keep this thread going until we find a solution. It's not the version. Thanks!

  • Won't render ken burns effect

When I try to apply the ken burns effect to a picture, after I check enable and click apply, the red loading bar appears on the image in the time line, but then instead of rendering the effect and showing progress like it should, it makes a "bing" noise and the red loading bar disappears! The end result is no ken burns effect, and the duration of the image is set to 1 second. I have never emptied the trash in imovie, which I know doing so can cause problems. So with the "emptying the trash" bug out of the question, I have no idea what could be wrong. Any help would be very much appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the response!
Earlier today, I actually tried just for testing purposes creating an imovie project on a different networked server we have and it worked fine. I don't think the problem is happening only because I am storing my imovie on a server. If I could, I would just keep it on the server it works on, however, due to differences in disk capacities, I am only allowed to store it on the server which I have the issue with. On a side note, imovie also works fine opening the project file from different shares on the same server I am having trouble with. It seems like The problem is only happening on the one particular share on the one particular server that I have to store my imovie in/on.
Also, just wanted to mention that the reason I was able to test it on different servers, and different shares on the same server I have to use is because right now my imovie is very small (all it is is a few pictures) so I can move it around fast for testing. Even then, I have to delete it from the other places after testing (can't leave my imovie anywhere but this one share on this one server). I'd like to get this solved, because right now what I do is move it to my local hard drive, edit it, and re-upload it to the server. Once I start adding video in, I would like to be able to just leave it on the server, because I don't have enough room on my hard drive for all the video, and plus the network transfer to move the file back and forth would take forever. Once again, any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • Ken Burns effect flickering in idvd

Finally have a decent burned dvd after much trouble BUT where ever I have used the Ken Burns effect, on still photos and adding titles, the clip flickers. Like little vibrations. Totally unacceptable. What has caused this? Anyone have this problem? Help!

OK.... So I am now trying to burn some copies in idvd >onestep dvd from movie - which i have done before with no trouble. Yesterday every time i tried to do this ( 3 times), less than halfway thru processing (or encoding) it just stopped. I finally quit idvd. I have 16 Gb available in HD and shouldn't that be enough for a 20 minute film?
Another thing. Shouldn't I be able to play the other dvds i have burned on my computer? Neither one of them will read when inserted. They play fine on my dvd player. And movies i have bought play fine on my computer. ???? So today i bought a dvd lens cleaner and even that won't read when inserted. The salesman at the store that sells Macs where i live told me this morning that my burned dvds would not play on my imacG4 because it did not have the new processor. Is that true? Again, thanks for your help and advice. I have learned much from you!

  • "Ken Burns effect" not working properly

Whenever I try to add a still photo to an iMovie 6 project, i get an error chirp and then nothing ends up in the timeline. Often, if I turn off the ken Burns Effect, it imports fine.
Do I need to reinstall? If so, won't that mess up the iLife '09 software already installed? And will it mean that I have to reinstall all my Slick Effects?
Anybody know the answers to these questions?
    Thanks in advance.

    As Rich839 writes.
My list in another way of putting it
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named. *com.apple.iMovie.plist *
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    iMovie updated ?
    QuickTime updated ?
    Mac OS version ?
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

  • Photo montage Ken Burns effect w/ variable intervals synced to music cues

I was thinking of buying Final Cut Pro to create a photo montage because iMovie does not let you define the specific timings for each photo montage. For example, I need one photo to show for 3 seconds and transition to another photo that lasts 5 seconds because of the way the music flows.
I start with music and I'm adding photos to specific points of music changes.
My question: the tutorials I've found on google all use Final Cut Pro. Can I accomplish the same task with the cheaper Express version?
Here are the tutorials that show what I want to do:

Can I use the techniques described in those 2 links in Final Cut EXPRESS?
    Thanks for the info.

Now I'm confused about FCE max resolution. I found this soundbite on the web... a user says:
"There is also the consideration that FCE 4.0x won't natively export 1920x1080, which I think is very disappointing -- the software engine is limited to 1440x1080. FCP does true HD from what I understand."
I'm not sure if he's saying the FCE "engine" doesn't support 1920x1080 or if AIC doesn't support 1920x1080 or something else.

  • Can't Add or Update Ken Burns effect

I am trying to apply a Ken Burns effect to a photo. I first tried to update an existing photo in a movie. When I changed the settings and hit the Update button in the Photo Settings window I can see the red rendering line on the clip start but it just beeps when it gets to the end (quickly) and the photo goes back to the original settings. I tried using a new photo from the iPhoto library in the Media section but it does the same thing. I can import a photo if I turn off Ken Burns.
I then tried creating a new movie--that made no difference. I then closed iMovie, deleted preferences and restarted--no difference. I then re-installed iMovie and the updates--no difference. I then removed all extra plug-ins from ~/Library/iMovie/Plug-Ins--no difference. I even restarted the computer completely--no difference.
The only way it works is if I login as a different user. So I would think it would have something to do with a plug-in or preference or something in my user folder and not in the system-wide folder. Or maybe a startup item. Any ideas?
    iMovie 6.0.3

Tons of disk space...tons free...tons of RAM...tons free

There's a bug in iM6 that prevents one from updating the Ken Burns effect on a photo after you have emptied the trash in your project. That might be your problem here. If so, the only cure is to reimport the photo and apply the Ken Burns effect anew. Do not ever empty the project trash until you have completely finished the project and won't be editing it any more.
If the above is not your problem, try repairing permissions as well as deleting preferences. You repair persmissions by using the Disk Utility app on your Mac. Select your hard disk icon in the left hand pain of the Disk Utility window and hit the Repair Permissions button.
Since the Ken Burns effect works when you open in a different user account, there may be some 3rd party or Quicktime plug-ins in the old account that are causing conflicts. If so, temporarily disable them by moving them to a different folder.
Make sure that you have 20GB or so on your hard disk.
Updating your Quicktime to current version might help.

  • How to get random Ken Burns effect?

I am working on a video slide show as gift for someone.  There are hundreds of photos so I obviously do not want to try create a unique feeling Ken Burns effect for every photo.  I tried adding the Ken Burns effect to multiple images at once but the movements end up being identical, save zooming in vs out.  I am on FCPX 10.0.7.  Any advice would be a life saver!  I would hate to migrate the project into iMovie and back for this.
If this is not something FCPX can do natively, I am more than happy to purchase a plugin if anyone can point the way
    Thanks!
    Doug

As far as I can tell, FCPX already does what you want. Admittedly, I absolutely ***abhor*** iMovie... have not used it since iMovie HD (6) and really didn't like the newer versions at all. I simply will not use it — so I wasn't exactly sure what you were talking about...  And Ken Burns? Never use it myself although I do see why it's popular.
Then I wrote this whole other message about ... well doesn't matter now...
Then I started thinking: FCPX has a facial recognition feature... color correction... grouping clips... other stuff... why wouldn't it use that info in Ken Burns.
Then I went into FCPX and tried out a few things, and "Lo AND Behold: EUREKA!" -- I think it's in there! (I am, however, basing it on this one image I tried... keep that in mind.)
Facial Recognition is  in the list of  import options:
I suspect all you need is Find People.
Then, in the storyline, when you first apply the Ken Burns crop:
Those two rectangles are the ones FCPX picked initially -- all I've done here is click on the Ken Burns button. That's a pretty d#@~ good guess! (I'm impressed -- and that pillarboxing you see is actually part of the image! -- it's a copy of an old slide I converted to digital.)  I have not seen this kind of "pick" in any other kind of image I've tried (and I've seen some pretty funky ones), and, it probably won't work without the Find People attribute checked on import (You can go back and reimport all the same images/clips as before, the newer metadata versions should simply replace the older versions without duplications.)
It will not, however, randomly pick the direction (AFAICT) -- but you can reverse the "pick" with the double curved arrows icon at the top left corner.

  • How do I get Ken Burns effect to pan entire photo?

I created a new project and put several photos into it. I am trying to use the Ken Burns effect to pan left to right, and have made the starting box (green) fairly small, and the ending box (red) larger. It is doing what I want, but does not ever quite get to the end that I desire. It spends most of the time on the beginning part, and never shows the very far right corner of the photo. Is there a way to adjust it so I get the entire photo showing on the right side, and spend more time on that part?

    Hi Joe
Think of iMovie and iDvd (both apps) as one candy bar ....the same candy bar. i-movie is like the candy bar itself whereas iDvd is just the outside paper wrapping. That's what apple means when it describes iDvd'08 and DVDSP as Apple's DVD Authoring tools (meaning we don't normally use DVD software to edit video per se; since the former is normally performed in the video editing app itself like iMovie or FCP/FCE). With this in mind....
If you don't like my candy bar analogy, then take a look at OT's comments here in the following post to get an idea of what I'm talking about:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7101419&#7101419
Adding Ken Burns effects essentially transforms a slideshow into a QT movie. Furthermore KB effects are normally added within iPhoto (or another 3rd party app like Photo to Movie) which then makes a QT file /movie that can be used within iDvd.
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
If you opt to use the slideshow features within iDvd; then it won't include KB effects also (to the best of my knowledge unless one adds video to the slideshow as well; a new option w/in iDvd'08).... however you can add transitions to those sides within iDvd's slideshow option, if this is what you wish to do.
You might also want to consider this app as well:
    http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/overview/
the quality is excellent and it comes highly recommended on this iDvd forum.
Hope the above is helpful but if not just come on back.

Yes, and thank you for the link to the thread. Since there are still varying results, I was hoping that Apple had published a patch or announced a new version that fixed this bug that is now very old. Fyi, my computer won't download the latest version, but my 'updater' says one exists.

  • How do I remove ken burns effect?!?!

    Hi,
    I have iLife 6.0.3 and I'm experiencing 2 problems.
    1. iMove keeps on crashing on me, it seems like I have to close my eyes and pray that it doesn't crash before I get to save my project, which is most often than not.
    2. Probably the most frustrating, is the Kens Burns Effect. I can not REMOVE, DELETE, GET RID OF IT! (I don't know any other way to put it) I just want it out of my original clip! I did everything the iMove Help suggested I do.
But there's no "Apply" it's "Update" and it did not work, and I did delete the transitions before and after the clip.
With the older version of iMovie this was not a problem!
    Please please please help!!!
    PowerBook5,6   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Aha. That sounds like a different problem. There's a bug in iMovie 6 that affects the Updating of clips of images we imported with the Ken Burns checkbox ON.
Normally when we import an image iMovie keeps a copy of the image inside the project. It's retained so we can update the clip later.
Trouble is, when we empty the iMovie Trash iMovie inappropriately discards its copy of the image. Later, because the source image is not available, the Update button fails to update the clip selected on the Timeline.
The first sign of pending failure is that the Preview screen is black instead of showing the image. A moment later, when we press the Update button, nothing changes in the Timeline clip. iMovie fails to Update the clip, but with no error message.
There's no good workaround. One solution is to never empty the iMovie Trash. Then iMovie won't discard the image. (We can still select large clips in the iMovie Trash window and discard them individually.)
Another is to use the Finder to lock the image file inside the project so iMovie can't discard it. That's pretty inconvenient, however. (When I REALLY want to empty the iMovie Trash I use an AppleScript to lock all the images in the Media folder of the project before emptying the iMovie trash. More convenient. Most of the time, however, I just individually discard large items in the iMovie Trash.)
Does that sound like what you see?

  • Best compression for ken burns effect

    Hey,
I am doing a 2 minute animation that is all ken burns effect.  The size is 720 x 1280. On the images that have a lot of detail like brickwork, there is a noticeable pop where you can see compression for a few frames and then it clears up.

Yes. I have an idea. Don't do that.
AE is definitely not the best tool for making an H.264. Render an intermediate file out of AE (lossless or nearly lossless, such as Quicktime with the PNG codec, Quicktime with the PhotoJPEG codec, Cineform, or DNxHD). Then use the Adobe Media Encoder to make the H.264. Use multipass compression. Adjust the keyframe distance, etc. The cool thing is that you won't have to render your AE comp over and over again for each time you need to test a different setting in your compression. You're just running off of the already rendered intermediate file.

  • Can't get rid of the Ken Burns Effect!!

Not sure why, but when choose Show Photo info when working on the clips in iMovieHD, in Preview, I don't see the photo. It's just black. I also can not get rid of the Ken Burns Effect. I click the X so it won't be applied to the photos, but it does it anyway. This is becoming very frustrating. Is there some sort of bug that's causing it to do this? I started over several times seeing if that would help, but it hasn't. Any suggestions??
