Ken Burns Export Shows Edges

A couple of months ago, I created a slideshow with manual Ken Burns settings. All (30) photos are horizontal. I exported to 'large' QT movie (with no music) and all looked perfect. Now I have made a few edits for timing, and added a couple more images. Previewing in iPhoto looks fine, but when I export it to large QT again, I see outside the edges on all the photos, including the ones not edited.
I am wondering if this difference may be from a QuickTime upgrade recently? I notice that listed on main Apple suport page/ Top Downloads there is a "reinstaller" for going back to QT 7.0.1 Could this be the issue?
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime704.ht ml
I am using iPhoto 5.0.4 and get the same results on a desktop and laptop both with 1 gig of ram.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

  • Stopping the Fade to Black on Ken Burns Slide Show?

I am trying to make a slideshow using the Ken Burns template. I want to be able to make a loop-able file (.mov or other), so I can make a looping DVD. At the end of my sideshow, there is a one second fade to black - Is there any way to stop that fade out or is there another way to do this effect without the fade out?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Black screen when trying to apply Ken Burns effect

I drag a clip to the timeline, click on media-show photo settings, then the box for ken burns effect shows up but the screen goes black and it says it doesn't recognize the file. I enlarged, dragged and it still doesn't work. It worked earlier in the day...? I defragmented and made more disk space. What could the problem be?!?!?

Ok, I've read what has been posted, but it doesn't work for me. My situation: Macbook Pro, 2.16 ghz, 100gig drive mostly filled up. So, I've attached a USB Western Digital 1 tb drive to do video work. I previously used a WD 500 gb drive. I don't remember, but this may be the first movie that I've done since upgrading to OS 10.
Anyway, using the WD drive, the first time I tried using KB effect was 2 wks ago and got the black picture after applying KB. So, I did without. Same thing happened again yesterday. I perused the subject here, did all those things, and the same thing happened again.
Then, I moved the iMovie file to my computer and tried it and it worked. I moved the file to the external drive and it still worked. BUT, it wouldn't let me apply KB using the file on the WD drive. Back to the computer and it worked again.
So, any one got any ideas as to why it will work on the computer but not on the external drive, at least in the application phase?
    Thanks for your attention.

  • Why does "ken burns" increase speed going in/out?

If you've used Flash, you know that you can control the motion by 'easing in/out', that is, the constant and consistent motion of a picture or object can be emphasized at the start or end of a tween (move slow and increases in motion speed towards the end, or vise versa).
the ken burns effect shows a normal smooth motion, maintaining consistent speed throughout the whole motion, ONLY in the preview pane. When it is actually rendered, for some reason some photos start their motion really slow. Others start their motion really fast. Why is this and can it be controlled?

    Welcome to the forum, Chris.
Yes, the accelerating zoom of Ken Burns is a known problem. Here's another thread discussing it, with some suggestions. Unfortunately, there is no perfect workaround.

  • Limited ken burns effect and exporting out the slide show

im trying to create podcasts of photos ( perhaps 50 )
with OPTIMAL ken burns effects panning and zooming
with my own musical scores using garageband. Using transitions and Voice overs and eventually uploading to a web account with iweb.
Is it better to create this all in imovie?
Iphoto is too limited with its very limited KenBurns effect.
I also dont see the individual time setting option for each image. where is that in iphoto. It seems that every photo has to be the same duration.
some have recommended iphoto then garageband
but i see too many limitations with iphoto.
    anyone have similar experiences?

Yes you can do this with vertical photos.
Click on the little icon at the top left of the photo thumbnail in your project. This will bring up the photo editing panel.
If you want the vertical photo to show up full screen, click crop, and pick which portion of the vertical photo you want to show.
If you want to see the entire vertical photo, click "Fit" and the entire photo will be shown, but there will be black space on either side.
Now click on "Ken Burns" to add the motion effect.
    When finished click "Done".

  • "show photo settings" and ken burns glitch? please help :(

    hi, i'm having a problem,
my software is the latest version, so is quicktime, all my updates are up to date, i'm not using an external hardrive.
i was creating a music video composed of all still pictures and everything was going fine untill today.
the "show photo settings" display box has a glitch or something.
the slide bars for the ken burns effect have disappeared.
a checkmark on the imovie display is now visible and the apply and reverse buttons have disappeared.
i can no longer exit out the photo settings window the same way as before.
when pictures are added to the timeline they are much too long.
i'm unable to keep the ken burns affect box checked, it keeps unchecking itself and it wont allow me to change any photo settings on certain pictures and on the ones it will allow me to when i press "apply" or the checkmark it stalls and wont render the file (the red line doesn't fill and just stays there)
when changing the length or display time of the picture it will delete itself and replace it with the next picture in line.
can anyone help me? i've spent a massive amount of time on this video and would like to finish it. i dont know what the problem is. maybe i clicked something i shouldn't have?
    thanks in advance

i'm estimating around _1000 pictures_ ... they are all being stored on the desktop ...
    WOW!
... how long does your poor Mac need for booting??
The >40y old Xerox metaphor of a Desktop/Folders/trashbin had the concept of simulating reallife.. would you store ~1000 pics on your desk while glueing them into an album (ever glued 1k pics into an album?) ...?
I assume, your System is 'cluttered'. totally cluttered.
try to clean up ... in Finder, clean your File 'System'... create folders (many folders...), use the pre-installed structure your Mac came with (how about storing pictures in... ehm, Pictures?), why not using iLife as intended (import into iM from iPhoto), why not using the integrated 'File Management' of iPhoto to create albums, to give your mass of pics some structure, finally consider to use approbiate apps (if you try to create a stopmotion-like movie, QTpro or Boinx' istopmotion are better tools) ...
keep in mind, a Mac needs at last 10-15GB free on internal drive to act normal.
export as much as you can to external drives (firewire connected, 'MacOsExtended' formatted), don't forget to give these harddrives structure too .. you know how to create Folders in Finder?
after all is set and done, your desktop is clean, everything is in its place, use Disk Utility to check&repair... finally, reboot your Mac, give it a chance to 'recreate' itself in better shape
... and there's still a high chance, that the fragile file management of the 20$ consumer app iMovie is still overwhelmed by >1000 stills in one single project...

  • Exporting slideshow to .mov file using Ken Burns looks low res?

I've created a slide show using the Ken Burns effect exclusively, and after I export as an .mov file and pull that into iDVD (or watching it in QT player) the moves look like a very low resolution image was used instead of the high res files that I know are there. Any ideas of how to fix this? or is this just the way iPhoto handles the files when using Ken Burns FX.

Have your tried the procedure that seems to solve a variety of problems for the iLife applications? Quit iPhoto and delete your iPhoto preferences. To do this, go to your username> library> preferences> com.apple.iphoto.plist. Delete this file. Then reopen iPhoto; it will create a new preference file with all of the default settings.
Ken Burns also...images do not fit to screen any more.
I am not aware of an option to make the Ken burns effect "fit to screen". This effect is applied in a somewhat random fashion, so what you see on one playing of your slideshow can be slightly different when viewed again. You can avoid undesirable changes, like cutting off the tops of heads, by manually applying the KB effect to photos in question. The control is at the bottom of the window when in the slideshow mode. When you are satisfied with the way the slideshow looks, export it as a QuickTime movie.
    I hope this helps.

  • I need to do non-constrained crops for Ken Burns effect in photo slide show

I am making photo slide shows in imovie '09. I understand the Ken Burns effect and how to set a start and an end point. I want to use the effect on vertical or portrait mode photos. i would like to have the entire photo displayed in portrait mode and have it zoom in a bit. The problem is The start and end points seem to only be horizontal or landscape mode. I can't ever get the entire image selected. How can I do this?
    Thanks,
    Tim

You need to add the letterbox (black space) in another application. iMovie's Ken Burns effect will not do it for you. You can do it in Photoshop if you like.
However, there is a way to do it in Automator, and you can do hundreds of vertical photos very quickly. That is the way I do it.
    Here is more detail:
There is also a quick way to pad your images without using Photoshop. This method will pad hundreds of images in just a few seconds.
You do it with a tool that comes with OS/X called Automator. It should be in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Automator is basically a workflow tool. It allows you to string together commands and actions into a workflow and then execute the entire sequence at once. If you have Snow Leopard, you can even add these workflows to your contextual menus that come up when you right-click.
There are many workflows that would work to pad your images. Here is an example:
In Automator, start a photo workflow and drag the following actions into the workflow from the Action palettes on the left.
    You should have something like:
1)Ask for Photos (You must select one or more photos and hit Select - you can make this easier by putting them in an album beforehand)
    2) Copy Finder Items (give it a folder to copy to- so you can find them easily)
    3) Pad Images. (put a check mark in "scale image before padding" Pick the pixel dimensions of your project...like 640x480 or 960x540. or 1920x1080
Hit Run and a dialog box will come up asking you to select photos. When you are finished, press SELECT and the Automator script will keep running.
Then at the end you should have padded images in the folder you created in step 2.

  • Photo Settings not showing up; cannot remove Ken Burns effect

    Hello,
Earlier today, I selected the photo setting button and a little box showed up with the Ken Burns effect options in it, however now when I select photo settings, the only thing that shows up is the preview of the of photo zooming/panning. Please help... how do I get back to that little box so I can remove the Ken Burns effect from my photos! Thanking you!

Also having the same problem. When going to show photo settings, it shows black screen. Un checking Ken Burns and updating does nothing. All photos in slide show have same super zoom of Ken Burns with no way to remove it or alter it.
iMovie HD broken, iMovie 08 ***... The only reason I purchased Mac was for handling media and I end up doing projects on my old pc using photoshop elements.

  • Ken Burns effect causing photos to show static

As the subject line suggests I am getting a sizzle effect, like sparkling pixel static across my photos when the Ken Burns zoom is in progress. It is uniform across the entirety of the photo. THis is in imovie hd 6.0.4 on my new imac 21.5 with system 10.6.4 These are photos taken with 12mp dsl camera and I notice some other older photos taken with 4mp camera point and shoot do not show this distraction. Something up with the rendering of high res stills ? THis does not happen in Ilife 09's imovie.
Thanks for shedding any light on this anyone.

I had the same problem with iMovie 9. I found a solution that worked for me at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12544852&#12544852

  • I have an older version of imovie.  After I change the photos using the Ken Burns effect and save them, the next time I open the file and click 'show photo settings' to change the zoom, the picture appears black and I can't change the zoom?

I have a five year old version of imovie that generally works fine.  However, when I add a photo using the 'Ken Burns' effect then save the movie, the next time I open the file and click 'show photo settings' the picture appears black and I cannot change the zoom.  Any suggestions?

Have you rendered both iOS 7 and iOS 8 (both of which will work on your iPhone 5) out of the question entirely without trying every possible configuration? The animations can be disabled entirely, if that's the problem. And if the whiter-brighter user interface is the problem, there's reverse-contrast modes that darken everything. You can expose accessibility controls to gain immediate access to these functions to toggle them on and off. I guess my point is you may have decided against upgrading the OS based on an early experience with iOS 7 when Apple has since made changes in later revisions to address some of the usability complaints.
Now, Apple's instructions for downloading older versions of apps is to do so from the Purchased list, not from the app's product page.
    See here:
Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support

  • Ken Burns Effect window not there when I click on "Show Photo Settings"

    Hi
I am using IMovie HD v 6.0.3 on my mac book pro v 10.4.11. When I press "Show Photo Settings" in imovie, all I see is a large preview window with the photo panning and zooming. There is no window box with a small preview window, zoom, speed controls, and Ken Burns check box, etc. on the interface. So, as a result, the only control I have is a stop, and grab.
Where is my Ken Burns window with all the controls? Is there a download or a fix for this? What am I missing? I have a project loaded with photos and a deadline, so I figured if I used imovie instead of final cut pro, it would be much quicker and easier.
    Please help....
    Thanks,
    Anneita

Thanks for your reply! Your suggestion makes perfect sense.
However, just before I received your reply, I made an appointment with a Mac Genius at the local Apple store, and guess what! The transparent box was hiding way down the bottom of the screen, and that's why it couldn't be seen. He found it! Duhhhhh......
    Thanks again.

  • Photos on timeline showing black when using ken burns effect

My photos in the project are not visible in the preview window when selecting'show settings' after the ken burns effect has been applied. The arrow moves but the screen is black.
    Any ideas ??

Although you've posted in the iMovie 5 forum, that sounds like a well-known iMovie 6 bug. If you are using iMovie 6 you may have encountered the bug:

  • Export a 'Ken Burns' Pic to FCP

Moving pictures in FCP ***** as anyone who has FCP knows. Can I export an iMovie 'Ken Burns' pic to FCP?

    Hello awp,
Moving pictures in FCP *** as anyone who has FCP knows
New to me - just created a squence with multiple pictures and clips, all moving, keyframing, time-remapping, etc. Great results ... customer satisfied.
    But to answer your question:
Exporting your clip (KB pic) via quicktime should do the trick. Export as full quality DV.
    hope this helps

  • IPhoto slideshow export -- Ken Burns "jerkiness" on playback

Have an iPhoto slideshow of 25 pictures. On some, I used Ken Burns effect to zoom in, out, etc.
When I export, the result is a .mov file. Everything looks great when I play it on Quicktime, except for some of the photos on which I had used Ken Burns (meaning there's motion). The bad ones don't render properly, and are "jerky" for lack of a more technical word. They get stuck for a couple of seconds, jump forward, get stuck again, etc.
Amazing thing is that I did an export out of Quicktime using Sorenson3, and that seems to have smoothed everything out in a nice way. Result is a movie with no jerkiness, and everything works right.
    Two questions:
    1) Can I count on the Sorenson3 export method to fix the jerkiness for three other iPhoto slideshow-based movies I'll need to generate, or was this a one-time fluke that Sorenson3 fixed this movie? In other words, is there a principle behind the fix that makes sense and can be counted on?
    2) What caused the jerkiness in the first place? Is there something I can do so the original output from iPhoto on Ken Burns photos isn't jerky?
    Thanks for any insights.

the audio associated with that set of photos was a piece of music off of an audio CD that had been transferred to iTunes for the purpose of making this section in the DVD. It's not a big problem that the music didn't transfer, since I can add it back into FCX. Thank you so much for your concern and help. This was a very key bit of info that you provided me. Thanks again. bill
