Ken Burns Glitch

I'm not really used to iMovie but I thought it would be easier to use Ken Burns than do it all in final cut. So I put in all the pictures and applied the effect to it and a notice comes up that says I don't have enough disk space and to empty the trash. So I empty iMovie's trash and now when I click on a picture that's already in the timeline and click 'show photo settings' it's just black. So I saved the project as on a different hard-drive with more disk space and it still does the same thing. I even tried making a whole new imovie project and copying and pasting all the clips into the new project but it doesn't work. Did I just screw everything up by emptying the trash and I have to restart the project or is there someway I can fix it?

You couldn't have known, but there is a bug in iMovie 6 whereby if you empty the trash you no longer can edit photos that have the Ken Burns effect applied. The only cure is to reimport the original photo, not the old clip. Then reapply the Ken Burns effect. And don't empty the trash EVER until your project is finished.
However, you need to be sure that you have enough free disk space for iMovie to operate. 25GB is frequently recommended on this forum. Probably 15GB would suffice, but 25GB is better.
Also, it wouldn't hurt to do a couple of simple maintenance things. First, close iMovie and trash the file com.apple.iMovie.plist file located in User (your name)/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create a new .plist file upon relaunch. Before relaunching, do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac. Open Disk Utilities and follow the screen. Make sure that your external hard drive is formatted for Apple. Should be Mac OS extended or Mac OS extended (journaled). If it is not formatted that way, you can reformat, but you will need to remove all files on the drive that you want to save because reformatting will erase all data on the drive.

  • "show photo settings" and ken burns glitch? please help :(

    hi, i'm having a problem,
my software is the latest version, so is quicktime, all my updates are up to date, i'm not using an external hardrive.
i was creating a music video composed of all still pictures and everything was going fine untill today.
the "show photo settings" display box has a glitch or something.
the slide bars for the ken burns effect have disappeared.
a checkmark on the imovie display is now visible and the apply and reverse buttons have disappeared.
i can no longer exit out the photo settings window the same way as before.
when pictures are added to the timeline they are much too long.
i'm unable to keep the ken burns affect box checked, it keeps unchecking itself and it wont allow me to change any photo settings on certain pictures and on the ones it will allow me to when i press "apply" or the checkmark it stalls and wont render the file (the red line doesn't fill and just stays there)
when changing the length or display time of the picture it will delete itself and replace it with the next picture in line.
can anyone help me? i've spent a massive amount of time on this video and would like to finish it. i dont know what the problem is. maybe i clicked something i shouldn't have?
    thanks in advance

i'm estimating around _1000 pictures_ ... they are all being stored on the desktop ...
    WOW!
... how long does your poor Mac need for booting??
The >40y old Xerox metaphor of a Desktop/Folders/trashbin had the concept of simulating reallife.. would you store ~1000 pics on your desk while glueing them into an album (ever glued 1k pics into an album?) ...?
I assume, your System is 'cluttered'. totally cluttered.
try to clean up ... in Finder, clean your File 'System'... create folders (many folders...), use the pre-installed structure your Mac came with (how about storing pictures in... ehm, Pictures?), why not using iLife as intended (import into iM from iPhoto), why not using the integrated 'File Management' of iPhoto to create albums, to give your mass of pics some structure, finally consider to use approbiate apps (if you try to create a stopmotion-like movie, QTpro or Boinx' istopmotion are better tools) ...
keep in mind, a Mac needs at last 10-15GB free on internal drive to act normal.
export as much as you can to external drives (firewire connected, 'MacOsExtended' formatted), don't forget to give these harddrives structure too .. you know how to create Folders in Finder?
after all is set and done, your desktop is clean, everything is in its place, use Disk Utility to check&repair... finally, reboot your Mac, give it a chance to 'recreate' itself in better shape
... and there's still a high chance, that the fragile file management of the 20$ consumer app iMovie is still overwhelmed by >1000 stills in one single project...

  • Ken Burns issues in FCP X

I have a problem with the Ken Burns Effect in FCP X.  In the beginning and end of each clip I use the Ken Burns on has a ramp up and down, or slowly increases speed in the beginning of the clip and slows to a stop at the end of the clip.  I want it to just pan and zoom without and slowing or ramping.  I have experianced the same effect when using key framing.  iMovie's Ken Burns effect doesn't have this same slowing or ramping.  Am I missing some setting to turn this added effect off Ken burns and key framing in FCP X?  Please Help!!!
    Thanks,
    Brett

Although I'm not certain, I don't think the Ken Burns effect has the ability to adjust the ease in/ease out settings. I usually prefer to use those, however....here's the solution.
    http://alex4d.wordpress.com/2011/08/04/smooth-move-fpx-effect/
Anybody using FCP X needs to get this. A free plugin called Smooth Move. It's like Ken Burns on steroids. The main points:
KB only works on the entire duration of a clip. SM gives you the options to hold at the beginning and/or end of the clip or photo and just move in between. And, I don't know the terms for this, but it does the scaling and positioning in a smooth professional way without the strange glitches if you scale and position at the same time using keyframes. And, best of all for you, it gives the option to make the moves constant or eased. In fact, you have separate ease/constant settings for position, scale, and rotation.
It's that good, and it's free - get it.

  • Front Row and Aperture : i don't want ken burns effect

    hello
is there a way to configure front row so that it doesn't have Ken burns effect when showing Aperture's pictures?
there is a PLIST file to modify for iPhoto, bu no such a thing for Aperture...???
    can you help me please?
Excuse my english, i'm french !

I have the same problem: used to use Aperture on front row without a glitch up antil I just updated to the newest aperture version 3.1.1 Now Im getting the same error message. Hope someone from apple actually sees this discussion forum.

  • Cannot transition into "Ken Burns" effect

    Simple.
I have a Ken Burns zoom on a photo. I want to fade in from black onto the photo.
At the point where the fade-in ends, there is a jump in the photo instead of a smooth transition.
This must be a software glitch in this version.

    Hi Mary
Don't know of the problem but I can suggest how I would solve it.
I would - before applying fade in or out - export out the Ken-Burns zoomed
photos to a new miniDV tape and then import this part again and try to apply
the Fade effect on this one.
alt. Save clips as a full quality QT (DV-stream) clip and re-import this.
It should work even if it is a rather crude way of doing it.

  • Ken Burns Slideshow missplaces support files

Any ideas why the Ken Burns Slideshow extension is placing the framework, images and slideshow folders under C|/Users/Robert/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS4/en_US/Configuration/Temp/Assets/eam76D9.tmp/
And even once I move the support files into my site root and correct the links in the doc's head it still doesn't show in the page.
First, I would like to know what can be done to fix it and second I would like to know if anyone else experiences this same glitch.  I was thinking of teaching this as an extension to DW  in my classes, but not if it is buggy.
    Thanks

Alright, I was a bit too eager to test the Ken Burns Slideshow so I had created a new page and hadn't saved it yet when I inserted the slideshow.  That is why the files were misplaced.  Interestingly, even after I saved the file, the support files remained in the wrong place so wouldn't work.  All I had to do was create a new page, save it and THEN insert the slideshow and voila, it worked just fine, inserting the propper support files in the propper place.

  • IMovie HD 6 import iPhoto 08 ken burns stretches photos

When I import photos from iPhoto 08 into iMovie HD 6 (HD-1080i-30) and use the Ken Burns effect, the rendered clip is stretched horizontally. If Ken Burns is not used, the photos remain in their original aspect ratio. Any ideas as how to use the Ken Burns effect without changing the aspect ratio?

I am delighted to read that I am not the only one who gets burned by Ken in iMovie HD 6. I have spent hours on this problem and came to the same conclusion, that this is due to a glitch in OSX Leopard. The origin, mode of import or file format of the still doesn't matter. Interestingly, I seem to be the only one with the KB being stretched vertically (i.e. my fat nephew Ralf looks pretty slim). There are additional problems with the rendition of video effects. Several of the Quartz Composer effects (e.g. bump distortion, circle splash distortion) render bright and washed out.
I also discovered that iMovie HD v.5 (five) in Leopard still renders the KB effect without a flaw. I am lucky to still have the old 5 version in the box. So I work in iM 6 (iMovie 7 is the biggest software insult Apple has ever launched against their loyal fans) and when I need to bring in a KB effect I save and reopen in iM v.5, do the KB and reopen in iM 6 with the KB effect still perfectly rendered and ready for additional editing (titles, transitions). By doing most of the still imports and KB's at one time, it is not that inconvenient or time consuming. It certainly beats altering the aspect ratio of each still. Try to get hour hands on a iM 5 version until Apple fixes the bug (hopefully soon), although my fat nephew Ralf prefers the stretch version. I checked Apple's downloads, they don't offer iM 5. Check for iLife 5 on eBay. Good luck!

  • How do I get rid of the Ken Burns effect on my photos

I would like to get rid of the Ken Burns effect on my photos I addes to my video. How do I do that

When you create a New Project and give it a name, the next thing you should always do is go to File>Project Properties and make sure in 'Initial Photo Placement you have selected either Fit or Crop. It seems the default setting is the Ken Burns annoyance.

  • Cannot get rid of Ken Burns effect on slideshow

I have turned off Ken Burns effect when creating slideshow on my Mac Mini (the one that I share iPhoto libraries with Apple TV). I did the same in Apple TV.
Still I have these funky effect that may fit some documehtaries, but is inappropriate to some other content... and one has to realize that (e.g. if you present photos from someones funeral you do not give some fancy effects to upset audience, right?)
Isn't it a bug in software? Anyone had the same issue? Under what circumstances the checkboxes to turn it of in APPle TV and iPhoto are ignored by Apple TV?
    Thank you.

I figured out how to do this.

  • Preview of Ken Burns effect doesn't work with some pictures

I just recently installed a new graphics card (ATI Radeon 7500) on my Sawtooth, 1.2 GHz, so I could utilize the Ken Burns effect in imovie HD. It works but only partly. It works great but with some pictures the preview pane doesn't show the photo. What I see is a what looks like bad reception on an old TV (fuzzies and the picture is distorted so bad you can't even make it out). With other pictures the preview shows up fine. I'm sure I've loaded the drivers. What else can I do?

    Hi Tonyy13.
I am presenting the same problem. I can set the Ken Burns' effect while I am with the pictures before placing them in the Clip or Timeframe viewer. After placing them there, if I try to edit the picture (either by right clicking and choosing -edit picture or by control clicking and doing the same, I ended up with a black background. If you change the setting in this black ackground and update this changes they will be effective. So, you can change the slide duration, and everything in the sliders but without an image.
I was running System 10.3.9 and I thought this was the reason. Today, I went and bought Tiger but it didn't sove the problem. I do believe it is a bug in the program. According to Apple's Help and David Pogue's "The Missing Manual" this shouldn't happen.
If you solve this problem reply to this posting. If I did I will reply to your posting. Thank You.

  • Preview of Ken Burns Effect is a black screen!!

So, I am doing a movie for my parents, and I have 102 photos that I have loaded into IMovie. I loaded them in to the clips section, as I am not a huge fan of iPhoto personally. At first, no problems, but later, as I dragged photos into the playhead area, my photos wouldn't allow me to preview the Ken Burns Effect. I would drag them into the playhead, click on "Meda" button, and then select the Show Picture Settings button. The preview screen goes black as the effect scrolls through the process, disallowing me to see the preview. I have deleted the pictures from IMovie, re-inserted them, and started over (AAAARRRRRGGGGGG!), and it happened again.
Any Ideas? Thanks for the help!
Oh, and I have made no modifications to my machine (no new graphics card), and the pictures are all in .jpg format.

  • How Can You Disable Ease-In and Ease-Out Of Ken Burns

It seems that along with everything else that has changed with iMovie version 10, when you add photos to the timeline it automatically places an ease-in and ease-out to the Ken Burns move.  For those of you who have been on a Mac for a while, this was how iMovie behaved in version 6 and earlier, and it feels rather dated.
If you are putting together a video slide show with multiple photos back to back, having the zoom ease in and out for every image is incredibly obnoxious.  I can see situations when you are providing a narrative that it might be important, but often photos are just being animated to music.  Is there a way to disable the easing or am I just best keeping to iMovie 9.0.9?
    Thanks!

    Hi Douglas,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It does look like this is the default behavior for imported pictures in iMovie 10, and can't be disabled from the iMovie preferences. The best workaround is to select all of the pictures in your timeline and turn off the Ken Burns effect using the Adjust menu.
    iMovie Help
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov26d3f6a6c
Modify a crop, rotation, or Ken Burns effect
In the timeline, select the photos you want to modify or restore to their original state.
Click the Adjust button in the toolbar.
The adjustments bar appears above the clip in the viewer.
To show the cropping controls, click the Cropping button.
In the cropping controls, change Style from Ken Burns to Fit to display the pictures in their original size. From there, you can crop them individually as needed.
    Best,
    Jeremy

  • How can I stop iMovie from automatically cropping and applying kens burns to my photos?

When I import stills into iMovie, it automatically adds a kens burns effect to each photo, and crops them. If I want to get rid of these effects, I have to do it manually for each individual photo. This takes alot of time and is very tedious to do. Is there a way that I can stop iMovie from automatically adding these effects? Or maybe a way that I can undo these effects on all photos at the same time?

in the iMovie Project settings/pref, you can switch-off the automatic applying of KB

  • How to get Ken Burns effect to zoom out so the whole pic is visible

I want to start or end with the full pic in view - just as the FIT command does.
Then I want Ken Burns to Zoom/pan to make it interesting.
But I can't figure out how to re-size the frame beyond the 4:3 (or whatever is restricting it) ratio.
Tried dragging the frame edges with CTRL, ALT, SHIFT, and COMMAND. Nothing seems to release the constraint.
    Thanks in advance.

I want to start or end with the full pic in view - just as the FIT command does.
If by "Fit" you mean the image exactly matches the display area, then you would have to "pre-crop" your scan to one of the available aspect ratios either before or after making your scan. If by "Fit" you mean "letterbox" or "pillar" views, then as Appleman said, you would have to either use the mentioned automator action or almost any graphic application. I prefer the manual approach so I can add a "text" area, frame, texture the background and/or image, and/or create other special effects.
But, how do I zoom the view out past the edges of the photo? If I press the FIT button in KB effect, it does it. But I loose the ability to zoom/pan... Unless there is some trick to getting KB effect to start or end with a FITted picture?
There isn't. iMovie '08 automatically scales the content to make the smallest dimension "fit within" the display area and, therefore, does not allow the "over-zoom" effect of "fitting" the larger dimension within the display area. You can however do this in iMovie HD. So if you want the "built-in" capability, this is a case where you should be using the the older application -- otherwise you will have to letterbox/pillar the content to get iMovie '08 to "Fit" your image as you wish.

  • How can I turn off the ken burns effect on iMovie? If I crop the picture it still persists!

I cannot turn off ken burns on iMovie for the life of me! Everyone is telling me to fit the photo or stop it, which I have done. However, when cropped the ken burns effect is still there in full force!!! What can I do to turn off this dreadful effect?
