  • Anybody use Kensington security lock on their iBook G4?

Don't know if this is the proper forum , but it was close as I could get.
Just bought the Kensington 64343, supposed to be one of the best security locks for portables. I have a 2005 iBook G4.
The top of the "t" goes in the slot but it can't rotate, in either direction. I've tried putting some (not a lot) pressure hoping the rubber bumper might depress a little so that the "t" could clear the case thickness, but to no avail. I've tried slightly tipping the barrel of the lock in case it wasn't "dead on" perpendicular, but no luck.
I'd be interested if anyone has tried this iBook with this lock and had success or failure.
    Thank you.
    Rich

I use them on some LaCie external HDs, they fit with a loose, rather insecure feeling,
and tried on my Intel iMac: feeling so tight, rotation occurs only thanks to the white iMac being plastic not aluminium.
Indeed a very poor quality for the price.
To think they still are better than the LaCie ones is even more disappointing...

  • New MacMini and security lock

Looking at the new MacMini, I was pretty excited to see that it now has HDMI. However, I can not see any hole for a security lock. Did Apple forget that or is it hidden somewhere ? I am looking to buy this for usage in a public room and with that size, a security lock is quite imperative.
Thank you if you can answer this.

When I prepared to upgrade the RAM in my new Mini, the first thought that came to mind was "where's the Kensington security slot?" I proceeded to search every square inch of the computer for some kind of security measure and was stunned when I found nothing.
This, in combination with the increased starting price, is definitely not helpful with encouraging more Macs in kiosk situations. That said, less than $75 to secure the computer (presuming that's what the security device ends up selling for) isn't enough to be a deal breaker.
Despite the likeliness of a third-party solution, Apple should not have left off this important security feature. Even though the slot would not protect against RAM removal, it is still essential to preventing the loss of property.

  • Is there a Security Lock Cable available for iPad?

The Kensington security cable used for Apple laptops connects through a specific port. Does that Kensington cable also work for iPad? If not, is there a security cable for iPad?

YES! I found this iPad Security Case for a design client of mine who was concerned about theirs getting stolen.
Tryten Technologies shows them here: http://www.tryten.com/Apple-Mac-Security-Locks/iPad-Security-Case
You buy the iPad Security Case and you just need a standard "Kensington-style" security slot lock (which they sell online) and it's now secure.
It's totally worth it compared to losing your iPad. Went online yesterday and pre-ordered 5 online because they are taking pre-orders right now.
I hope I was of help.

  • Security lock is different from iBook G4?

I must have made a mistake in assuming that the security lock would be the same for both machines.
I switched from an iBook G4, and I can no longer use my old security lock cable. It isn't one of those cheapy Kensingtons, but it uses a real padlock (you insert a metal pair of 'scissors' into the slot, open them up to prevent being able to remove them, then put the lock through the hole in the 'scissors'). I'm sure there's a name for this lock style but I am unaware of what it is.
It worked flawlessly for my iBook G4, but it doesn't fit in my MacBook. I can barely get the 'scissors' to close, and when I do, they pull the plastic frame out, bending it.
Anyone else have this problem, or have a good, solid lock that they can recommend?

I have used a Kensington Microsaver which I have occasionally used with my previous compaq laptop, my old iBook G4 and my current MacBook without a problem.
I believe the standard for the lock is set by Kensington, so their locks should work with all notebooks.
I'm not sure which way the kensington lock is supposed to be insecure, but if you're referring to the 'pin tumbler bumping' lockpicking method, I believe the kensington should be unable to be picked this way. Then again, I'm no locksmith - and the lock is a bit unique.
As with most locks, the most important thing is to give the impression 'keep your hands off'. Notebook thieves don't want to raise suspicion by tampering with a lock at all.

  • What is the best security lock for a 17" mac book pro?

    Hello Folks! Happy holidays!
    Quick question:
What is the best security lock for a 17" mac book pro?
    Any models or brands ?
    Cheers!

Most computers refer to the locking attachment in some relationship to the name "Kensington", and that might be a useful clue.
Following that, be sure to avoid counterfeit products. A well-known computer vendor (not Apple), was approached by a large purchaser (several tens of thousands of laptops) who insisted on using a counterfeit locking product that had a larger than normal locking tab. The vendor modified the tooling to accept the counterfeit product and, wouldn't you know it, the genuine product would no longer secure the computer properly.

  • HP Spectre x360 Security lock/cable?

I recently bought a notebook security cable thinking that it would work with my new HP Spectre x360. I couldnt figure out where it goes though. Does the Spectre x360 not have a kensington lock port? My sister's HP has one and I thought mine would too. If it doesn't have one, is there an alternative to the kensington port that I can use to lock up my computer?

Unfortunately there is no security lock on the Spectre x360. Why HP made such a glaring omission on this wonderful ultrabook is beyond me.

  • Security lock on new iMac

Sorry, I couldn't find the answer to this question anywhere on the boards or in the iMac manuals...
Do the new iMacs have a port where you can attach a security cable? I'm talking about something like you would normally use to lock up laptops... I think I see a hole that looks like one on the back of my new iMac, but because I can't find any info anywhere, I'm not sure.
It seems like these iMacs would be pretty easy to walk off with, so I'd like to lock it down.

Apparently yes. According to the Apple store, the Kensington Slim MicroSaver Lock is compatible with the iMac.
FYI, this is the discussion area for the iMac G4... not the new Intel-based iMacs.

  • Faulty thinkpad usb portable secure had drive

I had set a user and administrator password on my 320Gb "ThinkPad USB Portable Secure Hard Drive", partitionned it, and copied some data on it. All as worked as documented. Then didn't use it for a while.
Now the disk doesn't recognize the passwords set, and doesn't even pass to admin mode: "green-lock + 0" has no effect.  Sick of retrying, I finally reinitialized the disk (red+green+2).
Of course all data was lost and the password returned to defaut... but it is still not possible to enter admin mode to set new passwords! The disk is not more secure than any regular USB disk... (or even less if it looses the default password )
    - is it a known problem?
    - is there a firmware update to fix it ?
    Thanks for any help

A colleague and I both have these drives, purchased on different dates from different locations.  We BOTH ran into the same issue around the same time.  This definitely has to be a bug with the hardware encryption.  I'm desperately trying to find out how to fix this piece of junk

  • IOS 8.1 installed yesterday has spoilt my iPad 2! There are no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is now sluggish, juddery and strange, battery is draining fast and it no longer security locks when put to sleep.

I am so cross because iOS 8.1 installed yesterday has ruined my iPad 2! There are now no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is slow, juddery and strange, the battery is draining fast and the iPad no longer security locks when put to sleep.  I have checked all the settings, done a number of resets and really wish I hadn't bothered and stayed with iOS 7 when it all worked like a dream.  I thought that by waiting until 8.1, teething problems would have been fixed and I am just horrified that there is no going back!  I am not the only iPad owner that has this set of problems so why didn't you warn us Apple!  What are you going to do to help us?  I do not want to be forced into buying a newer version of iPad because you broke this one!

In spite of the fact that you said you checked the settings, I still believe that you have system sounds muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

AS for your other issues, have you done any other troubleshooting like resetting your iPad, resetting all settings or doing a complete factory reset?

  • Is there a way I can permanently disable the security lock thing in System Preferences?

Aside from logging and using the root account on a daily basis, is there a way to permanently be rid of the security lock thing in System Preferences?
Yosemite has a bug (?) where if an Admin account has its password set to blank (empty), you can't remove the security lock...
You can click it, it'll ask for Username and Password (Why?), and when you click on 'Unlock', it unlocks for a brief moment and instantly locks itself again...
This is beyond infuriating. Do advise.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.  However I'm quite aware that the sleep/wake button disables the screen.  Unfortunately, mea maxima culpa, I sometimes accidentally hit shuttle before I've pressed the sleep/wake button, often when I am trying to do more than one thing at once.  Sometimes I accidentally hit shuffle at other times too,eg when waking up the phone.
This is especially exasperating when listening to classical pieces with multiple movements.  I will look for an alternative music player for the iphone, as I don't think the default music application and I are a good match.
    Thanks again,
    Tim Blackwell

  • I was on a website I know is secured, but I could not find the security lock located at the bottom right of the screen. Where is it located now?

The small security lock use to be located at the bottom right of the screen. It is not there now when I go to secured sites. Where is it now?

The padlock has been replaced by the site identity button, for details on using it see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Site+Identity+Button

  • Pdf files not opening properly since updating to 1.7.1.418 only happens with security locked files

I've saved a file in pdf format from Illustrator with a security lock & now it wont open in Photoshop. I've only had this issue since updating to version 1.7.1.418

Wouldn't it be a good idea to completely invalidate the applet cache in the JRE installer?Yes, I guess it should be an option for user of the app on first start after upgrade, not for the JRE installer. There are many large applications that users would want to avoid re-download.
From the log, there is some hidden exception during first launch. The best way to proceed is to file a bug, including some guest/debugging access to the game.
