Kensington security slot worn away on two MBPs

Hi
Two of our MBPs seem to have the same fault: The security slots, which we use with Kensington Microsavers, have worn away, meaning that the Microsaver simply slides out even when locked. There is a plastic sleeve around the opening on the MBP - this seems to be the weak point which wears away. This isn't an issue on other laptops we use, which seem to have more robust metal slots.
This seems like a pretty big design fault. We use our machines in youth centres and they won't last long if we can't lock them to something!
Any other experiences of this?

We've had this happen on 5 of our MacBook Pros so far. The plastic inside the slot is much softer than on previous Apple laptops. The replacement part (bottom case) is about $500 and is not covered by AppleCare.

  • So why did Apple decide not to put a Kensington Security Slot on the new MBP?

So, I went to the Apple Strore today to prove I wasnt crazy. There is no
Kensington Security Slot on the new MacBook Pro. I work in the Production and Audio Visual Industry and there are times when we need to lock down our walkables MACS. Now at $3,700 maxed out, why in the world Apple leave off a
    Kensington Security Slot?

Rather than insult other users or the names they chose, you might want to re-read my post in which I said that this is a user to user forum. Apple does not comment here. We are not here to do business. We are here to offer technical support, and your question was not one requiring tech support. We simply are not allowed to discuss Apple decisions here.

  • Kensington security slot

I need to know if the Canon LBP6680/3480 UFR II has a kensington security slot. I need to lock down this printer but can't seem to see a security slot on the device. TIA

  • Security Slot Worn Out

After about 3 weeks of use, the security slot on my MBP is starting to wear out. The lock wiggles around in the slot, whereas it used to be securely attached. I've read several stories about how the slot wears to the point that the lock just comes out.
    1. Is there any brand of lock that won't continue to wear it out? I'm using a Kensington MicroSaver DS right now.
    2. Will Apple fix this? I'm still under warranty.
    3. If they do fix it, have they changed the design at all so that this doesn't happen?
Is there anything I can do? Thanks for reading.

Nope, it's not covered by warrenty. It cost me a couple hundred bucks to have the case replaced on my Powerbook the first year I had it. Now my Macbook Pro is worn after a year. The problem is Apple uses a piece of plastic to line the security slot. That's right, Steve Jobs considers a 1mm thin ring of plastic to be "security." This has been a problem with a Apple notebooks for many years. I've been on the phone with them many times, and, well, Apple doesn't care.
    Sorry, but you are SOL.

  • Kensington Security Locks don't Fit into Kensington Security Slot

Hello all, I'm just about to go back to college and I have this new MBP. Considering my dorm is in an uptown manhattan brownstone, I'm kinda worried about my MBP's security. So I decided to use a cable lock as a mild theft deterrent when I leave to shower, etc. But the problem is, after all the Kensington security cables I've tried, none would fit, even though on the MBP's specs page, it says "Kensington cable lock slot" for security.
As you can read in these reviews, it seems that many people w/ MBPs can't get their cable locks to work:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?spart=T7229LL%2FA#re v
I have tried their keyed and combo locks, as well as trying a display port screw lock (but due to the design of the MBP's DVI port, the screw lock cannot mount), to no avail. Nothing will work.
So besides from ordering a locked down metal case or a safe (which will be quite tedious every time I need to go somewhere), what should I do? (And yes, I will have the software anti-theft things installed)

No, the lock comes with three seperate spacers that fit around the head of the lock where it fits into the computer, thus preventing the lock from moving on the computer and scratching the casing. The lock also included a 'base plate' which allows you to screw it into a desk, table, wall etc. if you have nothing that you could securely put the cable around.

  • Lock for my Pro that won't beat up the Security Slot

I have been looking for a lock for my MacBook Pro. But all the ones I find, based from reviews, tear and beat up the security slot. I have found a lock that connects via the DVI screw slot, but it was out of my price range. If anyone has bought a lock that doesn't tear and beat up their security, plase tell me about it.

  • Security slot damaged........

In order to protect my precious 17" PB, decided to buy the "Kensington Slim Kevlar MicroSaver Lock" about 18 months ago.
Worked fine, until yesterday: the lock just dropped out of the security
    slot on the floor.........
What good is a "40% stronger security cable with aircraft grade steel cable and Kevlar brand fiber " if the inside of the security slot on the PB is made
    out of cheap plastic?!?!?!?!...................
Has anybody else experienced the same issues?
(fyi, haven't taken it back to Apple just yet, will be interesting to get
    their perspective on things.........).
    han

I've never before noticed that the slot's inside is plastic(but, then, I rarely have need/occasion to use a security cable)! That IS a big shortcoming. As they say, a security system is only as strong as it's weakest link. What were the Powerbook's designers thinking??? They really fell down on the job on that one! If a thief yanked pretty hard on a cable-secured PB, the plastic would likely come out and the security cable along with it. Then it's goodbye Powerbook.

  • Smb resolution problem on one of two MBPs, same network

I have a MBP 2,2, 10.6.5 and a MBP 8,2, 10.6.7. Each connects to the local network via WiFi 802.11n. The router is a Netgear WNDR3700.
On the new MBP, I have connection problems when browsing to SMB shares in the Finder that are not named explicitly in /etc/hosts. All the shares I expect show up in the Finder. However, connections fail:
    6/29/11 29 103715    /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[210]    SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 65
On the old MBP there is no problem.
What's been tried so far: make /etc/smb.conf identical on the two machines; twiddle name resolve order when that didn't work; examine /var/db/smb.conf (which on the new machine includes three Kerberos lines that do not appear in the old machine's /var/db/smb.conf, I've commented these out even though the file header says DO NOT EDIT); throwing away /Library/Caches and ~Library/Caches; adding hosts' names explicitly to /etc/hosts. Firewall settings on the two machines are identical.
Connections always work to shares named explicitly in /etc/hosts. They always work between the two MBPs. The new MBP can basically connect to nothing that isn't named in /etc/hosts on any reboot except the one immediately following deletion of the caches. If the machine is connecting properly and then allowed to sleep, on waking it can no longer connect to the shares.
What should I look for to figure out this behavior? The MBP 2,2 has been exemplary and it seems reasonable that the 8,2 can do the same things.
    Thanks.

    Yoo Chung,
Went into preferences and deleted all cookies. Then with Safari downloaded and installed 'Firefox Browser' and ran to see if we could break into Yahoo mail. Unfortunately, that didn't help. One thing that I didn't take into account was that I had reset the 'Parental Controls' after installing and updating Leopard.
I decided to uncheck the Parental Controls, log into Yahoo from 'Firefox', and got to the mail account page without any difficulty. We backed out, tried the same on Safari and everything worked just fine. I let her get into her email account and clean up the multitude of junk that collected since installing Leopard. Then reset the Parental Controls and then went back to the Yahoo mail account without any glitches.
Apparently, something triggered a fault and would let her go beyond the Yahoo opening page to mail. Everything is running great now, and we've an additional browser just in case.
    Thanks for you help.

  • Security slot lock

Does anyone know of a cheap, durable security slot lock? Thanks.

As noted, the Kinsington combination lock works very well. I purchased one because I spend some time in public WiFi cafes and there have been 'grab and run' thefts. I secure the cable around the table base and connect to my laptop's security slot.
