Kenwood KCA-iP500 ipod interface and iphone?

I have a kenwood touchscreen navigation/headunit and want to buy the Kenwood KCA-iP500 ipod interface to use with my iphone. This interface is for audio only. Will it work with the iphone? Anyone from apple want to chime in? Anyone out there who has tried this? I emailed Kenwood but m guess is that they will not know.

    Hello!
Who managed to solve a problem with connection iPod classic (120Gb or 160Gb) to Kenwood KCA IP500 for full work and IPOD charging?
Who can explain me in detail?
I read at this forum that people have some problems but they didn't find the solution of these problems.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/6567734#6567734
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1323641?start=15&tstart=0
    Now I am using Kenwood W8534 + KCA IP500 + iPod Video 5.5g 80Gb.
    This works very well.
But I want to buy 120Gb or 160Gb Ipod classic.
    PS.
I can't replace firmware in HU Kenwood W8534 because it haven't USB.
    Thanks!

I'm glad to see these issues are still getting airtime in these forums; less impressed to see that Apple still don't seem to have nailed this one down 100%.
For what it's worth the performance I'm seeing with my 1.1.2 Classic and the iP500 is more or less consistent, and useable, but frustrating. The (very) occasional random Eject problem I can deal with, but the very frequent refusal to charge is still annoying in the extreme. Sometimes the charging icon appears, but most times it doesn't.
For short journeys to and from work I don't even worry about this (20-30 minutes on the battery isn't the end of the world) but for longer journeys I have to remember to check whether the iPod is charging every time I stop and re-start the car's engine. I've taken to removing and re-inserting the dock connector several times with the ignition on until the lightning bolt logo appears, which works but probably isn't doing the physical connectors much good.
I like Ian's theory that the problems are to do with the handshake and/or logo download during initial connection. Because the Classic doesn't make use of the low-resolution monochrome Kenwood logo I'd forgotten the download even took place. The fact that a quick removal/reinsertion of the connector can sometimes goose the thing into charging may back this theory up; perhaps if the iPod isn't given enough time to flush its memory it doens't bother trying to re-negotiate the connection but just 'sees' the power connection straight away?
All guesswork of course, but with zero feedback from Apple, guesswork is all we have to go on.
I've never let my battery run down completely (and the iPod is never left in the car overnight) so I've yet to witness the complete refusal to connect that Ian describes, but it sounds frustrating in the extreme.
Let's hope 1.1.3 can put to rest the last of these issues.

  • Kenwood KDC-MP4028 w/ KCA-iP500 ipod interface

So I was all excited to get my new 80gig classic Ipod about 2 weeks ago. I plug it into my head unit with the ipod interface, and everything seems to be working fine until today when I realize that my combo is not charging my brand new Ipod. This worked great on my old 20gig. Had almost no problems at all.
Had I known this was going to happen, I would have never bought the Ipod. Does anyone know if Apple is going to release a firmware upgrade that might fix these issues? If not then I guess that's the last Ipod I ever buy.

Until welshchris re-posted the link to the Kenwood update page I'd had no reason to look at it too closely, but it would appear as though he's right. The document clearly states that only USB media, not CD media, can be used for firmware updates. It doesn't sound as though pre-USB head units will be upgradeable, and a quick Google for "kenwood firmware upgrade cd" returns nothing that suggests otherwise.
On the other hand Cabell76 claims to have spoken to someone at Kenwood who posits that an upgrade to the iP500 itself may be in the works, so does this older module have a different way of accepting firmware updates or was the Kenwood guy in error?
In the mean time I've had a chance to play around with the iP500 and my new Classic (updated to v1.1) in various charge states, and can confirm what IaninSydney says, namely that the iPod does appear to accept external power through the Kenwood unit (in so much as the 'lightning' icon appears in the top-right corner) but only if the battery is already fully charged. This is extremely odd behaviour, and may be the reason why I didn't notice any problems when I first got the Classic -- the battery was already fully charged from being connected to iTunes overnight.
Something else I noticed is that, if the battery is fully charged and the lightning icon appears, the word 'Connected' at the bottom of the iPod screen is replaced by the current track information as selected by the head unit. I'd not noticed that before either. Something is definitely working differently when the battery is 100%.
This whole situation really is a head-scratcher. I haven't had any of the more alarming symptoms as reported by other users (missing audio, random shutdown etc.) so from my POV all I'm seeing is that the Classic refuses to acknowledge that it's connected to an external power source unless its battery is already fully charged.
That's insane, and seems like such a minor compatibility issue that I can't believe Apple haven't sorted it out.
The only positive take I have on this situation is that, because I've seen other docking stations (Altec-Lansing amplifiers) successfully charge and switch off the Classic, I know that there is a hardware solution to the problem even if it means physically hacking into the iP500 and adding and/or bypassing power and switching lines to the harness. The end result would be a hybrid connector that provides power switching as if from the amplifier, and communications to and from the iP500. Of course if I start to see the other symptoms reported here and elsewhere it just won't be worth the effort.
But at the end of the day we shouldn't have to do this. One of the things I always admired about Apple, and especially the iPod, was the backward- and cross-compatibility of hardware in a world where everyone else's hardware seemed to be going from bleeding edge to unsupported legacy in shorter and shorter cycles. Sadly, it looks as though my admiration was misplaced.

  • IPod in the car with Kenwood KCA-iP500

I just connected a Kenwood KCA-iP500 iPod Control Interface to a Kenwood KDC-MP228 receiver. Installing the iPod Control Interface could not be easier (once the receiver is out of the dashboard). It’s just one cable that goes from the back of the receiver to the iPod. The sound quality is excellent, way beyond an FM modulator or cassette adapter. When the iPod is connected it gets power, but is also locked so that it can only be controlled via the in-dash receiver. That is not a problem since playlists, shuffle mode, and track selection are made with buttons on the in dash receiver. Moving between playlists works just like switching CDs in a CD changer. The playlist name and track name are also displayed on the receiver.

Hi Rob - I'm about to get the Kenwood interface too, but at the sacrifice of unplugging my much-loved 10 disc changer!
Could you answer some quick questions for me? The product info from Kenwood is thin - you really would make my day if you could fill me in on these. Thanks.
    1. I've read that the Kenwood interface only lets you play 10 playlists, like, the first 10 from your iPod or something. Is this true?
    2. Can you play/play all/shuffle/repeat an artist, genre, album or playlist like on your iPod, or is it just playlists? If so, how usable is this process?
    3. Most car MP3 systems suffer from massive usability problems. Is there anything that particularly limits this set up or annoys the crap out of you?
Thanks - any help you can give soon would be great! I have to decide by Friday if I want the stereo chap to install it or not!!
    Aww - cheers!

  • Since latest update, Sound Check on Ipod touch and Iphone doesn't work.

My playlists have always played at an even volume before Sunday's software updates to Itunes, Ipod touch, and Iphone.  Now my playlist volumes are all over the map.  I teach a fitness class in a large room to 70 people, and this is ruining it!!  Apple support on the phone told me it should work.  Yes, it did work until the update, and I didn't change anything until I noticed it wasn't working anymore.
Now I have uninstalled/reinstalled Itunes, restored my Ipod Touch as a new Ipod, and even deleted and reloaded my music.  Still not working!!!

Just a stab in the dark, but check:
Settings -> WiFi -> (your WiFi network) -> HTTP Proxy
Set the Proxy to Auto and see if that helps.

  • I have an ipod, ipad, and iphone. ilike to use imessage on all of them but i dont want messages to appear on the devices i am not currently using. nor do i want to have to keep a saparate account or id for eCH OF THEM. WHAT IS THE FIX?

i have an ipod, ipad, and iphone. ilike to use imessage on all of them but i dont want messages to appear on the devices i am not currently using. nor do i want to have to keep a saparate account / id for each device  how do i fix the settings on each so that with the same ID / login I can chech me emails, share contacts etc, be able to use i messenger on each without the whole conversation automatically beiing picked up by my other devices? some conversations just arent intended to be shared!

Turn it into the local police department with an explanation as to who you tried to contact and what they told you. That's the only safe procedure, as otherwise the owner could report the iPod as stolen, even though you tried to return it, and get you into trouble.
    Regards.

  • IPod Touch (and iPhone) can't find Belkin N Wireless Router

I spent over an hour looking for an answer to this problem today and accidently found a solution - so am posting the answer.
Have a 2 year old Belkin N Wireless Router (model F5D8236-4v1) with SSID broadcasting on and WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK) security selected.
All the Windows laptops in the house could see the wireless SSID and could successfully log in after entering the WPA/WPA2 password.
Both iPod Touch and iPhone 3GS could NOT see the SSID. Also entering the wireless router IP address directly instead of the SSID did NOT work.
After an hour of looking for solutions on-line, including:
    - Tried no security
    - Tried WEP 64 and 128 bit security
then stumbled across a thread in a forum where someone referred to changing a "-" (dash) in an SSID name to a character. So tried this.
The old SSID name includes spaces - "name name1 name2". I deleted the spaces, and the problem was solved.
This Belkin router comes with a default name of BelkinN_WirelessXXXXXX, but does not say in the online help to NOT use spaces in the SSID name. And again, the Windows laptops could see the wireless Router while it had the SSID name INCLUDING the spaces in the name.
Hope this saves at least one person going through the same wasted hour.

Click on the blue arrow to the right of the network name, if IP address starts with "169." ,restart your router. It should connect properly after your router reboots in a minute or two.

  • I had my ipod touch and iphone synced to itunes on my computer that just bit the dust...If I don't replace the computer, can I still add stuff to these two devices?

I had my ipod touch and iphone synced to itunes on my PC and basically managed my photos and music, etc. from there.  However recently my computer died and I am considering replacing it with an ipad eventually.  Can I still add stuff onto my two devices?  And if so, am I limited to apple store purchases only?  Can I retain all the photos and non-apple store downloaded music that is presently on these two devices?  Any guidance in this area will be very welcome!

    Morning @mb,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:

I am going to japan with an Ipod nano and Iphone 4. Do I need a converter? or does the one the iphone comes with that plugs into the wall enough? I know i wont need an adapter because it will fit into the wall outlet, but voltage wise, will i need a converter? Japan runs on 100 V. I am so confused on all of this...

As long as the adapter is 2 pronged, then you should be able to use it without any problems.
