Kernal Panic attacks - please help

For the pas couple of weeks my G4 (Quicksilver) has been having kernal panic attacks. This problem does not happen all the time, but seems to happen more after the computer has been asleep from the time I go to bed till I get back from work. It wakes up fine, and about 3 minutes after it waking up there is a panic attack. It will then take me 3-4 restarts to get back up and running, then everything works fine. I have run the hardware test, applejack (a couple of times), and a couple other, along with removing the memmory and trying each one, and it still happens. Tomorrow I will be purchasing new memmory and will try and swap it out, both of my 512MB RAM sticks did the same thing when I restarted.
Here is the the latest info from the panic log.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I beileve the only thing left is I believe it to install new RAM and to reinstall the OS.

Once the computer gets up and running, it can go to
sleep for a couple of minutes and it will wake up
sometimes ok. If I restart the computer once it has
been warmed up it seems to work ok, I have only had a
couple of times where it did not like the restart.
Yeah, that sounds similar.
Does this mean that it could be a processor issue -
that the processor has to be warmed up before it will
work correctly?
We never did figure out what the underlying problem was. These were Avid edit suites and when the problem showed up, the computers were just so old we decided to replace them (I wasn't paying for them myself). I nursed one through the political conventions in 2000 by putting it on a UPS (and crossing my fingers a lot) just to make sure it never got turned off. But that was just because I didn't have enough time to set up a new computer at that time.
I am just running out of ideas on
what to do, and I really need this computer to work
for a while longer.
My suggestion is to see if you can just keep it running all the time for as long as it's got left. It's almost certainly going to be cheaper to pay for the electricity than to have it fixed. If you have to take it down for an extended period of time, just try to plan ahead if you can for a period of downtime where you coax it back to life.
It could be any component, maybe the CPU, but also the clock chip that's running the whole system drifting off frequency.

  • Kernal Panic attack during Boot up

When i boot up i get a kernal panic attack when this screen and says
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001A7BED): Kernel trap at0x00000000, type 14=page fault
BSD process name corresponding to current thread:
I cant quite read after the BSD Thread part seeing as the Kernal message attack comes up on the screen.
    I seriously need help.
Running macbook model 2.1 with 2ghz processor 4GB ram. Running Leopard 10.5
This actually happened was updating Leopard when I installed 10.5.. then when it was installing i put the lid down.. then brought it back up after a few mins.. and it was a black screen, pressed the power button.. Nothing? so i switched it off then switched it back on and then this happened..
Now i dont know what to do

    Boot from your installer disc:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
If you get a kernel panic during the above then you have a hardware problem of some sort. Consider running diagnostics:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error

  • Kernal panics - daily? Help?

    Hi Folks
Maybe you can help... lately my imac intel has been kernal panicing.. a lot.
I can't narrow it down to one bit of software, or anything. Today it just kernal panic'd and showed that nasty multi-lingual message while I was watching a DVD and not even touching the thing...
Now - I saved the bug report, but it doesn't mean much to me. But can anyone else shed light on it? I'll post it below. It looks like it could be something with USB... anyone? Please? It makes me sad!
Thanks in advance for any advice!!

    Hey guys
    Thanks for the quick replies!
I ran the hardware test... and nothing showed up. Did the extended tests and all 'appears' to be fine.
    So that's a good thing, I suppose.
I've not installed any new RAM or anything, and the only new thing added in the past few months would be my apple keyboard (which is lovely!).
I've disconnected all stuff that wasn't necessary (Sorry, Palm, you served me well but Blackberry has now made you obsolete!). I'm currently leaning towards blaming my HP C4180 printer. I remember that it had some nasty coded error message on it a while ago - and it's not been too reliable lately. So I've disconnected that and am hoping not to see the kernal panic again...
It's hard to troubleshoot something that doesn't happen at a specific point or when I'm doing something... and as this is my main machine I just have to wait it out and see if it happens again.
Hoping it doesn't and I can safely blame the printer! Otherwise will have to blame one of the 5 external hard drives. But they all tested out okay.
I will give it a week and if it doesn't happen again, Hurrah!
If it IS the printer, how can I hardware troubleshoot that? Or should I contact HP?
Thanks again for your suggestions. I spent ages looking for my hardware test disc until I read that it's on the Install disc. Doh! Shows how old fashioned I am, eh?
That Xlab article is brilliant.. have bookmarked it, but hope I don't have to look at it again!

I didn't see a clue. Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html
Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems? Do you have another mouse you could use?

  • Kernal Panic Issue (Need Help Decoding)

This morning after booting up my Mac Pro, I received a Kernal Panic message on the screen and had to reboot in safe mode.
I disabled any startup 3rd party applications and also disbaled any login startup applications.
After doing this I was able to start up successfully, but after about 10 minutes of running, my screen would fade to black from the top down and then the machine would restart itself.
I did this a couple of times and thought I would post here to see if anyone could help decode my kernal panic info.

Is Netflix or Silverlight using Java? did you see the other user earlier today with Q about those also?
System is nearly 7 yrs old, FBDIMMs go bad, the original graphic cards are due for upgrade if you have not.
Still have your OEM DVDs? Apple Hardware Test is on one.
Also, consider installing 10.6 on another fresh format drive and do all the updates and 'watch' before making more changes. You cna use Setup or Migration Assistant. Lion runs well on these systems too.

  • KERNAL panic attacks, what causes?

4 Panic attacks, problems with Mac OS X Kernal, in last week, any idea what causes this and how to fix?

  • New 30" display = Kernal Panic attack

So I just took the plunge and bought a 30" display ( and a Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition Video Card) for my Mac G5 dual 1.8gHz, 1.5gB RAM, OS 10.4.8. I have a Lacie PCI Firewire 400 card and USB card installed as well. The kernal panic is when the screen goes half bright and has the grey box in the center of the screen that say's in multiple languages; I must restart my computer, right?
So that's happned to me twice since I bought the monitor & video card two days ago. It happens when I've put the system to sleep (but not every time I put it to sleep). Any ideas?
    Thanks for the help.

  • Kernal Panic Attacks - how to diagnose

I have recently started to get kernal panics on my dual processor G4 with increasing frequency. The problem started when I switched monitors to a 1600x1200 Samsung (analog connected). They went from once every few days, to every day, to multiple times a day, to the point where my HD could not complete a start up without a kernal panic during the apple screen.
    I tried the following:
    1) tried the Apple Hardware Test CD and it check out fine.
    2) Ran Repair Disk from OS X Tiger install disk - no errors found
    3) Ran Repair permissions - many errors found and corrected
    4) Ran repair permissions again - no errors found
    5) Panic occured while still booted from Install disk
    6) Machine seemed to work when started from external HD (though only used for a short period)
    7) tried to boot from internal HD again and got panic before apple screen complete
    8) removed memory (3 - 512K) and tried with individual dimms only. No panic each time - startup OK.
    9) restored all memory and system now seems to work
Not sure if I will get panic again, but at least I can boot from internal HD again. Any ideas as to what else I can check. I believe I have gone through Dr Smoke's steps. Could problem have been due to dust on memory?

The "uncorrectable machine check" and Machine check exception state is pretty much an unrecoverable hardware error indicative of a more serious issue. It could be bad memory, it could be the logic board, it could be a processor issue, combination of some/all. Normally something like this may occur when the system is overstressed but faulty hardware exasperates the problem under even lesser loads.
In my case, I had intermittent panics which were hard to track down (pretty much folllowing the steps you did). I eventually did rule out the ram by running them in my Cube without any problems. Sometimes I could go weeks without an issue even under load after doing the troubleshooting but then all of a sudden, every few minutes to a few hours would result in a KP doing something simple as web browsing. Eventually it got so severe that one day, I got that machine check panic as soon as I powered on. It turned out to be one of the processors on the dual processor board failing from overheating.
This happened twice on my QS2002 within the first two years. The first time, the system could be coaxed to boot after letting it sit since the failing processor wasn't completely fried yet but the second time (not too long after the initial incident), one processor burned out completely (machine check KP right at power on). The tech showed me the chip and how bad it was. Luckily the first two times were covered under Applecare.
The third time happened out of warranty (at which point I was ready to grab the machine by the handle and fling it out a window out of frustration). Was almost ready to pull the trigger on a PM Dual G5 but decided to get the cheapest dual G4 (1.2GHz) upgrade from GigaDesign at the time in 2005 since this would hold me over until the Intel Mac's came out.
In all three cases, heat (even with attempted improvements to the airflow/exhaust) was the primary factor in the eventual processor failures since my system was always under constant load. I think the culprit was insufficient cooling of the aluminum heatsink (the GigaDesign uses a better designed and smaller copper heatsink along with two attached fans) which is magnified by a case which already has poor airflow.
I've had no problems with the machine since this brain transplant. Of course, anyone who is able to narrow it down to either the processor or logic board needs to think if it is worth sinking any more money into at this juncture considering the prices of a new Mac.

  • Crossed out Circle... kernal panic... help, about to throw away computer

Slowly but surely my 15" Powerbook G4 was dying and it may be done forever, but I'm trying on last time. My computer froze and when I hard restarted I just got a blank gray screen (no apple image, no working indicator).
I put in Leopard CD and tried to boot from that disk. It slowly... and I mean slowly started up the disk and I eventually found my way into Disk Utility to try and first aid repair the HDD. I got to it and it basically said I couldn't complete the repair (something wrong, i don't know).
I tried then just installing Leopard again from the disk resolved that I don't care if I lose all the info that was there. But when I try to choose a volume to install to the HDD has an exclamation point on it. I can't choose it to install to. Went back to disk utility to look for disk and HDD volume name doesn't appear any longer, can't even try to repair it.
I put in Disk Warrior and tried to boot to it but just got kernal panic stuff all on my screen ending with an "error: we are hanging here". Repeated but never could boot to Disk Warrior.
Put back in Leopard disk and tried booting back to that, but now I can't get that to boot. I get a gray screen with a crossed out circle and the working sign which never goes away.
So basically I can't boot to anything including the Leopard CD.
I don't mind losing everything on the HDD. I just want to wipe things clean and start over. Any thoughts?

I downloaded the AHT and burned it to a disc. When I put it in the computer and boot to it a screen comes up that says "invalid memory access at.." then a bunch of stuff.
Goes on to say what kind of computer it is, some copyright info, the system time with a "welcome to open firmware" and tells me to type either "mac-boot" or "shut-down" the prompt area is preceded by a "0 >"
I typed mac-boot and it went to a screen with the folder/finder/question mark flashing thing, all the while the cd drive keeps spinning up and down. I'm assuming it's looking to boot somewhere but I can't.
Is there anything else I can do from this 'open firmware' prompt area? Kind of a cool place. Like I found a secret portal on my computer. I typed in "global thermonuclear war" but it didn't do anything.

  • Panic debugger please help

  • Kernal Panic Attack

Tried to upgrade my 2006-era 17" MBP yesterday to Snow. But kept on receiving kernal error page, telling me to hold down my power button to power down, and re-start. Didn't really surprise me - I have too many utliities and pref pane add-ons. Performed a safe boot and tried deleting startup items. Disabled login items, too. Ran Disk Utility. No hardware was attached. Re-installed Snow Leopard. No go.
So I thought I'd erase my laptop's hard drive, install Snow, and then re-install my apps one at a time. Started that. It was more of a drag than I wanted.
Now I am thinking: Start deleting unwanted and un-used apps now ... especially the pref pane items and startup items - then try to install Snow Leopard.
    What do you think?
    Clint Bradford

I've removed "offending / outdated / known-to-be-non-Snow-compliant" preference panes. There's nothing in Startup items any more. Here is a crash report ...
