Kernal Panic: Cannot load OS X from any Internal Drive

On Sunday evening I opened my trusty Macbook Pro 7,1 (13" Mid 2010) and all had locked up.  Nothing would respond - just a beachball.  I powered off and attempted to start back up again.  It went straight to recovery.  Disk Utility reports a fault with the Hard Drive's EFI Partition.  I cannot load hardware diagnostics - screen shot attached of error
I swapped out the Hard Drive and attempted to reinstall via internet recovery however this would fail at the point of starting the Yosemite installation. (a not very helpful message from memory).  The date was set correctly.
If however I mount the drive via USB I can reinstall Yosemite just fine and run OS X perfectly normally from USB.  If I take that disk and install it internally OS X wont load and I get the Kernel Panic Below.

I reckon that this will be a hardware error however as for where I cannot say.  Anyone able to offer advise?

Generally if you can boot the MBP from an external HDD and not boot the MBP with that drive internally, the SATA connection is usually the problem.  Replacement of the cable will usually solve the issue.
I suggest that you take the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a definitive evaluation.  The repair is not expensive.
Ciao.

Bad timing.  Reapply the security update:

What happened is that version 1.0 of the security update was available for a bit of time this weekend, and that disabled Rosetta.  Version 1.1 brought it back.

    Hi Neale,
That was my first thought as well, I do know that Photoshop sometimes gets a surge of shite to the brain and refuses to download the movie formats.
However after your mail I went again, through every individual pic/, about 1500 of them and yea, you were right there was one bloody movie file.
Thanks so much really appreciate your help.

  • Cannot boot Snow Leopard from external FireWire drive

I use a Western Digital My Passport Studio 500 GB external drive to back up my MacBook Pro with Time Machine. I had created a 30 GB Leopard boot partition with various utilities and tools; since the small drive goes wherever the laptop goes, I figured it might come in handy to be able to boot the computer in the event something went wrong with its internal 250 GB drive.
Over the weekend, I upgraded the external drive to Snow Leopard, and now it can no longer be used to boot the laptop. The symptoms are truly weird. Holding down the Option key while rebooting does not show the external drive unless I disconnect and reconnect the FireWire cable. The drive then shows up. I select it, and it appears to begin to boot, then it just sits on the gray screen with the little round thingie turning for a long time (five to ten minutes). Eventually, the system boots from its internal drive. This happens regardless of whether I'm connected by means of FireWire 400 or 800.
After spending a lot of time looking at the usual suspects (cables, permissions, PRAM, etc.) I reinstalled Sand Leopard (OK, 10.5) and lo and behold, the drive boots again (though for some reason I still have to go through the disconnect/reconnect routine). Clearly, something in the OS has changed with respect to the way booting from external drives is handled.
On the positive side, I have none of the symptoms described in other threads: Time Machine works flawlessly, and both the boot partition and the Time Machine partition appear on the Snow Leopard desktop every time I connect the drive.
Does anyone have the same issues? Does anyone know of a workaround?
    Thanks,
    Daniel

    Hi,
Working from a MacBook Pro 2.4 (Santa Rosa) with 4gb ram, running OS 10.5.7-
(All external HDs are 7200 rpm)
Shortly after our fresh install of Snow Leopard onto a new but already tested External 1.5 Seagate Barracuda (with the most current firmware), in an OWC Mercury Elite enclosure-
We installed Snow Leopard smoothly to that external HD without any issues, and it booted up from that 1.5T external HD, and worked fine.
Then, still working from the MacBook Pro, I turned on and booted another external HD (a Newertech Guardian Maximus RAID running 10.4.11 via FW800, daisy chained to the 1.5T External with Snow Leopard newly installed.
Again that's MacBook Pro <FW800> Snowy external HD <FW800> 10.4.11 RAID (booted & working from the RAID).
But when I tried to bootup up Snow Leopard, after doing the work on the 10.4.11 RAID-
    It would not boot up.
Though Snowy would appear as an available Start Up disk, each time it was selected as the Boot drive,
the Internal HD OS 10.5.7 booted instead.
I changed around the cables and tried repeatedly.
    Same result, no Snowy boot.
Even after the OS 10.4.11 external RAID was power down, and disconnected.
After some looking around, I found this forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2136208&tstart=0
    Got me thinking.
I tried the USB, and it booted !
I tried the FW400, and it booted !
And mysteriously, at this point- I tried the FW800, and it booted !
And then, the MBP boots seemed to reliably boot from that external, via FW800.
    Bizarre.
Snow Cat needs to be taught originally how to find FW800 from the bottom up ?
Turns out, Snow Leopard doesn't like booting,
if the preceding boot was on the 10.4.11 RAID, and work was done with programs there.
So, once again, I repeated this process:
After working with programs on the 10.4.11 external HD,
the MBP would not boot the Snow Leopard external HD,
it defaulted to booting from the MBP internal HD OS 10.5 via FW800.
even though Snowy was selected for Start Up.
    This was the case repeatedly.
(It would also boot from the 10.4.11 external RAID, if it were selected for Start Up.)
(In each of these tests below, I only rebooted the computer at each test. I did no work with programs on the various HDs.)
SO, once again, at this point of the process:
I plugged in that Snowy external HD via FW400,
and it booted up fine !
Then I booted up from the Internal 10.5, and tried to boot Snowy via FW800 again.
    It worked !
Then I turned on the 10.4.11 RAID external HD, and tried to reboot from the Snowy external HD.
    It worked too !
Then I booted from the 10.4.11 RAID, it came up fine.
Then booted from the Snowy, it came up fine.
Then booted from the Internal HD 10.5, it came up fine.
Then booted from Snowy again, it came up fine.
Then I turned off the 10.4.11 HD, booted from Snowy, it came up fine.
Then booted from the Internal, it came up fine.
Then tried Snowy one last time, it came up fine.
    Anyway, the issue is:
    It works fine-
Except when I do work within the programs on the 10.4.11 external RAID.
Then I have to use FW400 or USB to get it to boot once again . . .
Regardless of whether the other external HD is removed from the system.
It's some sort of flaw, and totally repeatable in testing.
Hopefully, it will be fixed soon.
    Howard

  • HP Pavilion 500-210 QE Can't boot from any hard drive.

Good Evening. As you can see from the subject, my computer just can't boot from any hard drive that I put on it. I tried swapping the power supply, the SATA cable, resetting the BIOS, enabling legacy boot, changing from AHCI to IDE and RAID...
When I get to the BIOS setup, I can see the hard drive and its specifications, but it just won't boot or show up when I'm trying to install a new OS. I'm not an expert, but I think the problem might be in the motherboard SATA ports, but I'm not sure. Just to make sure, I did try another hard drive and it didn't work aswell.
I was also thinking about buying an external hard drive and instaling my OS on that, but I don't even know if that's possible and I would really like to have my computer working again.
    Thank you for your attention!
    This question was solved.

What is the installed operating system?
Did you make a recovery disk set?
Did you happen to make a  Windows 8.1 startup disk or USB recovery thumbdrive?
Have you tested the hard disk?
Press the power button and then immediately tap the Esc key. In the Startup menu, choose F2 for Diagnostics. In the HP Basic System Diagnostics menu choose hard disk. Run the test and post the results here.
The issue you are facing has nothing to do with the SATA ports. It is a configuration issue. Your PC is a modern one and its BIOS (UEFI) is far more advanced than what you may have seen before.
If you want to install a different operating system then you will have to make a few changes in the BIOS configuration. Secure Boot is turned on by default for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. If you try installing a different OS without turning this off then your system won't boot up. You may be running into this if you are trying to install another operating system.
The image below is  what will be seen in the BIOS of your PC in the security tab --> . In the secure boot configuration options do not clear the secure boot keys! Those keys are your operating system license activation keys.

  • Why are my photos from iPhoto library deleted from my external hard drive when I am only deleting them from my internal drive?

I did a backup of photos (iPhoto library) from my internal to an external hard drive.  I have started to delete photos from my internal hard drive.  It seems that when I delete from the internal drive, photos also delete from the external.  I did a test and deleted one photo from iPhoto internal drive.  When I plugged in the new backup (external drive) and clicked on iPhoto library, it opened iPhoto in the exact place I was working and that one photo was gone.  What do I do?  I do not want to delete the photos off of my external hard drive.

When I plugged in the new backup (external drive) and clicked on iPhoto library, it opened iPhoto in the exact place I was working and that one photo was gone.
When you clicked on the library iPhoto on the EHD iPhoto is op;ending the last library that was previously opened. To change libraries launch iPhoto with the Option key held down to get this window:
Then select the library that is on the EHD if it's in the window. If it isn't, click on the Other Library button, navigate to the EHD and select the library there.

  • Cannot Load JPG Files From Canon Powershot S2 IS

    Hi,
I'm having a problem loading JPG files from my Canon Powershot S2 IS. When I plug the camera into the USB port, I get the Canon Camera/DV Twain Driver with a list of images to import. They are all JPEG images, which is my camera's native format. (I don't think RAW is available on this model.) But when I select an image by double-clicking it, it is imported into Photoshop Album (Starter Edition 3.0), but has somehow been converted to TIFF.
The problem I have with this is that the TIFF format uses up about 7 time more disk space than the original JPG and I can't afford a new hard drive right now. I simply don't have enough disk space available to import all my images. (I plan to back them up on CD after importing.)
I see that Edit -> Preferences -> Scanner has an option to save files as JPEG, but Edit -> Preferences -> Camera has no such option.
Please help! How do I get the images to stay as JPEG?
    Thanks!

  • Can video be loaded to ipad from any camcorder with a usb (video out) cord?

Using the camera connection kit usb adaptor, can video be downloaded to an iPad2 from any camcorder with a usb (video out) cord?  Would the video then be accessed via iTunes?

    From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4101 :
iPad Camera Connection Kit imports most media files on the camera or SD card, regardless of whether that format is compatible with iPad. If you are unable to view certain images or videos, verify that they are in an iPad compatible format, or import them to your computer for viewing.
They should then be accessible from your computer, but not via iTunes : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083

  • Mac OSX Reader 10.1.2 – Cannot Change Default Printer From "Any Printer"

With Mac Acrobat Reader 9.x it was possible to use Page Setup to set the default printer from “Any Printer” to one of our choice.  Once set it was possible to print many documents without having to go back and reset it every time.  In other words it would ‘remember’ the setting.
Mac Acrobat Reader 10.1.2 does not remember the setting of the printer in the Page Setup dialogue and keeps reverting to "Any Printer" between printing; either from the same document or multiple documents.  Thus on each occasion I need to print I need to go to Page setup and reselect the printer.  Irritating, and time wasting.
Now this would not matter if there were not a slight, but nevertheless significant, improvement in print quality between a document printed with the correct printer and “Any Printer” selected in Page Setup.
NOW, before you all jump in with suggestions read this:
1:  I do have the printer selected as the default printer in System Preferences (no difference anyway).
2:  Selecting printer in the Print dialogue makes no difference to the print quality.  It MUST be selected in Page Setup.
ADOBE, can you please get Mac Acrobat Reader X (10.x) to revert to the same behaviour as Reader 9.x ?
    Thank you.

The same problem exists in Reader 11.0 for Mac.  In my case, it defaults to our specialty photo printer instead of the workhorse laserprinter.

  • My PB G4 won't boot from any hard drive..stucked in apple icon..

At first, it didn't boot from the internal hard drive...
I could see the apple icon with grey background, but the little runing icon under apple icon didn't appear. There is no sound from the hard drive either...
I tried removing and replacing the RAM, didn't work either...
I have the powerbook CD with apple hardware test, I ran it. It went though a detail test and showed no errors or problems....
And then I tried to start up from the powerbook CD, it works and I was able to go to disk utility. However, I cannot complete verifying disk permission because of a lot of problem, sometimes it said "communication error with disk manager" and sometimes it got frozen and sometimes it just simply stop moving (not frozen, but just not moving, the disk is quite also too).
then I tried to boot from my USB external hard drive, I had my backup in it. However, it is the same as booting from internal drive, no running icon below the apple icon. Also, the external hard drive did not make any sound.
I have never experienced this problem... please help...

Have you added any hardware or new software recently?
Have you tried a safe boot? Hold the shift key while you boot - this does some disk maintenance and doesn't load login items. If this works, try booting normally.
If you can't run Disk Utility verify permissions from the OS X CD did you also try to verify or repair the disk? If this won't work due to errors, you may want to consider a program like Disk Warrior to attempt to repair the hard drive. You can find it at http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/

  • Can't load Leopard DVD from G4 optical drive

I worked with a tech person today to try to load Leopard from optical drive on my G4 Powerbook. It doesn't recognize DVDs, but does recognize CDs. I was told to I could get an external DVD player which I did, but the one the Apple Store sold me -- the MacBook Air SuperDrive does not run on the PowerBook G4. I need to be able to load Leopard ASAP. Any suggestions?

I don't know what the salesperson at the store was thinking. The MBA SuperDrive doesn't work with anything but the MBA, unless you dismantle it (voiding the warranty) and perform a hardware modification which will not be described here. And because it's a USB device, it couldn't boot a Powerbook at all, even if it could be used with one after booting. So someone at the Apple Store needs to be enrolled in a reeducation program ASAP.
