Kernal panic caused from garageband

Hi guys this seems to be a recurring problem, im now on my 3rd 2011 macbook pro and about 10% of the time im on garage band it kernal panics .
I had headphones in and the blue snowball mic that the apple store gave me for free because they said it was compatible and caused no problems. I was in the middle of speeding up the bpm/tempo of my song and the boom it kernal panics...this is probly my 11th or 12th time getting this..and each time my computer seems to get significantly slower.
Please guys this is making my mac experience miserable..i have been on the phone with customer support for probably more than 10 hrs and they always blame it on one thing or another....Ive even had a kernal panic with nothing plugged in before. THIS NEEDS TO STOP.
So I would appreciate what ever advice you guys can give...thanks and here is the report

  • MacBook Pro kernal panic caused by video card

I have a mid 2010 MBP running 10.8.4 since upgrading I have had several kernal panics. I think it is a screen redraw issue. I do have and external monitor but it also happens with it disconnected.

Can I get opinions and possible corrections?
    Thanks

    Hello Carroll,
I was researching what might be causing the issue you describe here and found a great article for isolating and troubleshooting Kernel Panics named OS X: About kernel panics found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3742.
For OS X Lion and earlier, follow these steps:
Press and hold the Power button for several seconds to turn off your Mac.
    Turn on your Mac.
As soon as your Mac starts up, hold down the Shift key to start up with a Safe Boot into Safe Mode. Note: If you are using a third-party external keyboard and cannot start with a Safe Boot, try using an Apple keyboard instead.
If your Mac has another kernel panic starting up, or while in Safe Mode, go to the "Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic" section below.
If your Mac starts up without a kernel panic after a Safe Boot, restart by choosing Apple menu () > Restart…, then let it start up normally.
Important: If the Mac has another kernel panic within a few weeks, refer to the "Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic" section below.
Note: If the hardware and software on the Mac checks out as OK, yet recurring kernel panics still occur, it is possible that something on the network is sending the Mac malformed network packets. In these situations, check the devices on the network. Make sure the router's firmware is up-to-date, and that the router is functioning. Refer to the router's manufacturer for service and support.
If the Safe Boot does not resolve the issue then there is a section toward the bottom labeled Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic that I would recommend using to further isolate and troubleshoot the Kernel Panics.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Kernal panic preventing shut down after Mountain Lion upgrade

Following upgrade to Mountain Lion, kernal panics are stopping shut down of my Mac from the apple menu. I have a late-2009 Mac Mini. OS X closes as normal but then restarts with message "Your computer restarted because of a problem". I have performed disk verfication, repaired permissions, reset VRAM and SMC. Booting from original hardware disc allows a normal shut down, so I suspect this is software related (probably Mountain Lion?). Kernal panic report from Console is below.
Reading this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4135480?start=30&tstart=0 suggests problems with nvidia cards and Mountain Lion. My Mac Mini has the original nvidia card it shipped with (9600M) and if I disconnect the display just before shut down it (usually) seems to shut down normally so might be display related?
Other than the problem with shutting down everything is working normally. First instance of this problem was immediately after installing Mountain Lion. I am currently considering a full-reinstall of Mountain Lion from the recovery partition and using Time Machine to retrieve my settings etc, although I am concerned this will not work if it is a genuine bug.
Any assistance or solutions gratefully received!

    Hello hotdavesweet,
It sounds like you have exactly the same problem as I have - nothing connected except the TV, permissions repaired, PRAM reset, etc.
Are you using Mountain Lion?? I had to downgrade to Lion to solve it. Unfortunately, a very similar problem occurs with the latest version of Lion (10.7.5). I'm sure that something with the latest updates is causing problems on certain Macs. I've filed a bug report with Apple so it may help if you do the same.
It could be a problem with using Samsung LCD TVs as monitors. Or maybe a graphics card issue - the user in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4316892?start=15&tstart=0 noted that a similar problem on a 2009 Mac Pro was caused by their (nvidia) graphics card driver.
Either way, I think it is something that Apple should address, even if it is only affecting a few users. Apple's mantra used to be that everything just works, but now I cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion with my setup (despite my Mac being easily capable of running it) and nor can I upgrade to Lion 10.7.5. It doesn't work as it should.

  • MacPro Randomly Restarts with Black Screen, Kernal Panic

    Please help...
I have a Mac Pro 4,1 Early 2009 running OS10.9.5.    In Feb'14 I installed a new graphics card, NVIDIA Quadro 4000 for Mac. Lately, though, for about the past two months, my computer has suddenly restarted in the middle of a task. It restarts with a black screen. I'd then have to hard-restart my computer to bring my monitor back to life. When the Mac finishes starting up, I am greeted with what I understand to be a Kernal Panic report. This problem has been occurring more frequently now, which is prompting this post.
Typically, I've noticed that the restarting/crash would occur when I am doing video related things that seem to tax the system. So much so that my first thought was that my system was overheating? Yesterday, I observed that the crash occurred when playing video in a web browser, and it happened each time I tried transferring 30GB from a USB source to an external harddrive.
I performed a Hardware Test, short and extended, and everything came back as normal. I also uninstalled CUDA Drivers, but to no avail.
Then, I decided to remove the Quadro 4000 video card and put back in the original video card, a NVIDIA GeForce GT 120.  My system has since been working well, as I was able to successfully transfer the 30GB that previously caused the system to crash.
So my question: Is my NVIDIA Quadro 4000 video card dead? Or, are the Kernal Panics a result of bad software, meaning I should reinstall the OS? What should I do next, as I need the Quadro card for it's cuda power in video editing?
    Thanks for the help!

Once the hexadecimal Addresses are edited out, it is easier to see that the problem was related to the display card. NVRM is the NVIDIA Display RAM on the card. It appears to have failed. This is not an issue with the Driver, but with the card.
Replacing that card with an old one and having the symptoms disappear supports that evidence.

  • Sudden Kernal Panics with Production Server

I was called in today because a departmental supervisor had to manually restart their production server today and the application that ran on it didn't restart properly. After some looking and then another controlled restart to get the application going again, the server kernal paniced. From actualy examination, it appears this is what happened the first time.
As the server is in production mode, I've not taken any steps with Dr. Smoke's troubleshooting list, but I have pulled the panic.log and I'm posting it here. If someone has any clue where I should start, that would be helpful!

Could this be a processor flaking out? I'm sure I'll have to do this after hours, so any head start I can get would be greatly appreciated!
    PowerBook G4 17   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.5G RAM

    Hi, L.
    The panic cited, i.e.
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x000E7FF4): vnode_put(1d95210): iocount < 1</tt>
implies something is amiss either with affected Mac's hard drive directory (potentially affecting either file information or virtual memory swap files) or your RAM. Processor or programming errors are also possible, but I'd say less likely.
A vnode is defined here as "An in-memory data structure containing information about a file."
The particular message sited in the panic comes from the vfs_subr.c component of the operating system, concerned with "External virtual filesystem routines."
I suggest you troubleshoot this off-hours using my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ, as you noted. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
If you look at this Google search you'll find some similar reports that find issues with hard drive files, RAM, bad NIC, and related things that the troubleshooting steps in my FAQ would help you isolate. However, follow my FAQ step-by-step rather than skipping around as it's designed to find high-probability / low-effort causes up front.
    Good luck!
    Dr. Smoke

  • Booting from external device causes kernal panic

I am suddenly unable to boot my first generation MacPro 1,1 from any external device. I have tried my Leopard install DVD, a USB thumb drive, and an external hard drive. All of these result in a Kernal Panic. I was able to boot into the hardware test from my original cd that came with the computer. The hardware test reported no problems.
Here is the kernal panic I get every time:

I removed my Nvidia 8800gt video card and replaced it with the Nvidia 7300 that came with the computer. I can now boot from external drives. I guess there is some conflict with the 8800gt.

  • Kernal panic/ won't boot from hard drive or installation disc/ error type 1

Friends PowerBook seems to be dying or is possibly dead.
    PowerBook G4 model A1138 or M9969LL/A:
    15 inch/ 1.67 ... http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBookG4_15-inch_Double-LayerSD.html
K, so my friend's powerbook is in my possession... and not booting.
A week ago, upon booting the laptop, he'd get the old OS9 looking folder flashing with THE happy face and then a question mark. Then, usually, it'd boot. It started taking longer and longer to boot, so he backed up all his stuff. It eventually stopped booting OSx (10.4.10) and came to me asking about how to reinstall Tiger.
As of right now his machine will NOT boot from the hard drive, regularly or in safe mode.
When we try the install CD, we get a kernal panic. It hangs, then tells us to restart. Every time.
Holding down "alt" I tried the hardware diagnostic/ repair thingy from the install disc. It mentions a quick issue with finding Gineva fonts or something and then gives the following errors:
    type 1346978644 error 1
    type 1346978644 error 1
Invalid memory access at %SRR0:00000000 %SRR1:00083030
Thats about all we got. We are looking for a screw driver to try and remove a stick of ram and see if thats the problem. Any ideas? Hoping for a bad stick of ram or hard drive. Anyone know if for sure the logic board is dead or if there is a way to fix it? Appreciate any feedback. Happy to give more information if you need it!
    ~joel

When you did the boot off the original system disk was anything non-Apple externally connected? If not, then you clearly have a hardware problem, and your idea of examining the RAM is not half a bad idea. The only thing you might want to do before that is zapping the PRAM. Sometimes that clears issues such as you describe:
    1. First determine if your machine is under 4 years old. If it is, then go ahead
and do step 2. Otherwise do step 3.
    2. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    3. Take it to an authorized service center to have the clock battery replaced. That may cause the very issues you described.

  • Empty Trash Causes Kernal Panic

When I go to empty the trash, it begins to delete a few items, then the screen turns gray and I have to manually power off my iMac. When I boot back into OS X I see panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001E6D3E): jnl: transaction too big (8385024 >= 8388096 bytes, bufsize 4096, tr 0x3b96fb0 bp 0x36d25460) I've tried booting off the Install Discs, doing a repair disc and repair permissons. Repairs were made for both. I'm still getting the kernal panic. Is this just a bug in OS X since 8385024 is not greater than or equal to 8388096. Has anyone else seen this?

Basically I went through my trash at the terminal level and did sudo rm -rf and deleted files. I continued to do this and eventually hit a file that is causing the panic. I've tried to also delete this file at the terminal level from the OS X disc but still get the same kernal panic. I've pulled this one file out of trash and no am able to empty out my trash as normal. I just have one file that I cannot delete.

  • Could external monitor cause kernal panic?

Hi there, I'm trying to track down the cause of a couple of nasty kernal panics that have caused me to have to zero my hard disk and re-install twice in the last couple of weeks.
The last panic log I have (not certain it contains info from the last panic) has no reference to software as far as I can tell, I checked the memory with the apple hardware test and a freeware app called Rember, both tests came up fine.
I use a cheap and cheerful LCD monitor for a split screen Logic Pro setup. I noticed that the grey screen with the apple logo distorts while OSX is booting when the extra monitor is plugged in...... It's made me wonder if that is the source of my troubles, could that be the case?

Hardware or software can cause the kernel panic. You don't have to waste time and zero out your drive. Just isolate the cause whether it be software or hardware then deal with it.
If you decide to re-install OSX then don't add anything but that monitor and see what happens.

  • Safari causing kernal panics and random shutdowns and overheating.

My original Inel macbook pro is getting rather sick and I am hoping to hold out for the new 15 inches when they eventually unpdate.
However Safari is causig all kinds of hangs restarts kernal panics overheating with my machine and yet if I use google chrome for the exact same web sites these same problems are not present.  I much prefer to be able to keep using safari and I realise that I haev not got the most up to date software since Lion is not supported on my machine but it is as up todate as snow leaopard allows.
I also realise that a more than 5 year old machine is doing very well especially since it is rarely off. It has outlasted 2 timecapsules and countless airport express but the anomyly between 2 browsers is weird. I doubt this has a solution but maybe the odd apple tech who read this might find it a challenge to know why one browser causes heart issues but another doesn't.

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • Windowserver crashes and kernal panics from iPhoto in Mountain Lion

I am using a Mid2010 MBP 15inch i7. I have just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. Currently whenever I try to open iPhoto my MBP completely crashes and reboots woith each report stating a windowserver crash or occasionaly a kernal panic. I was having similar problems in Lion when with windowserver crashes when switching between windows or scrolling in Numbers or switching to iPhoto from other apps. I upgraded to ML because I was told this may fix the issue. Now i can't keen open iPhoto. I have Pram restarted and iPhoto opens but as soon as an image is selected I have another window server crash. Pre ML install I did a clean install of Lion and it made no difference.
Posted below is a copy of my last error report. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully no one here told you that. A common theme is people blaming all problem on Lion or Mountain Lion, whatever operating system was just released and telling people with obvious hardware problems that they need to wait for a "bug fix". Updates come and updates go - taking warranties with them - but no fix ever happens.
There is a small possibility that the "Soundflower" kernel extension is giving you problems. It is very unusual to see a kernel panic without Soundflower being listed. If you remove that and still have panics, then it is definitely a hardware problem.

  • TS3742 How do I resolve OS 10.8 kernal panics / crashes that occur most frequenly when waking up from sleep mode?

I get a lot of gray screens of death on my MacBook Pro ever since I went to OS 10.8.  Never had issues with the 10.6 versions and now miss those days.  The kernal panics seem to occur most frequently just waking it up from sleep, regardless of where i am or what is attached to it.  I can't help but wonder if it is a problem with the video drivers under 10.8.x.
I get these daily, so here is the log that gets sent to Apple, but I'm not really sure anyone looks at them.  Perhaps they would if other people experienced the problem too, but perhaps I'm in the vast minority.

Do you see things like described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
If so, or even if they don't, you should take your MBP into an Apple Store or Apple Certified Service center along with a printout of that article. They will test it to see if it is that problem and replace the logic board for free up to three years from date of purchase. That time is likely close or already passed.

  • Ordering iPhoto book causes kernal panic

I replaced an external drive that failed. Data recovered and put onto the new drive included my iPhoto Libraries.
I have a library for creating books, and I have just created one. When I order the book, it 'connects' and begins to 'assemble book' but never gets beyond 14 of my 24 pages. The computer either freezes entirely and I have to manually shut down, or I get the black screen overlay telling me to restart my computer immediately (kernal panic).
Have read in iMac discussions re: kernal panics, and have repaired disks and permissions. Everything else works fine except the book ordering in iPhoto.
    Should I reinstall iPhoto?

    Beverly:
Try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. If that doesn't help make a backup copy of the library and then rebuild it by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
A workaround would be to boot into Safe Mode and try ordering the book.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Kernal Panic after update to 10.4.6/Missing HD Space/Won't Startup from DVD

Sorry to lump three problems together, but they may all be related.
First - I was getting random Kernal Panics while at 10.4.5, so I attempted to update to 10.4.6. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting up. I got a screen full of Kernal Panic info. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.3, and that's where the system stands now. It's running fine.
Second - My computer suddenly announced that the startup drive was out of disk space. I looked and the window said 30g. I closed the window and opened it again only to see it at zero k. I dumped some items to get some disk space, but now I can't get my 30g back.
Third - I want to startup from the Tiger disk like I did when I reinstalled, but it won't startup from the DVD. I'd like to run Disk Repair on the main hard drive. It showed some errors when I ran a Test using the Disk Utility.
I'm hoping this is all related. The computer seems to be running fine, but I can't update or find my missing space. Any advice I can get on these issues would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Jon

Is your computer saving a panic.log after each of the kernel panics? You can see by opening Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and looking for it. I'm not at my Mac now, so I can't tell you under what section to look for that log.
When you try to boot from the CD, are you holding down the 'C' key as the computer reboots? You can also try rebooting with the Option key pressed, which will present you with a list of bootable volumes. It will also give you access to the Apple Hardware Test (if this is the DVD that came with the computer). If you can select the Apple Hardware Test, I'd recommend doing the Extended Test, which will test the hardware, including the RAM.
For the disappearing disk space, you could have some process that is going bezerk and filling up the log files. In any event, to see where you disk space is being used, download and run Omni DiskSweeper.

  • Kernal Panic upon waking from sleep

Has anyone had an issue with kernal panics upon opening the macbook pro after it has been sleeping for a bit. It seems to happen when the computer is closed and I open it and it has been unplugged and then plugged in right when the computer is turned on it kernal panics, below is the entire error log, not sure if this will help anyone help me find a solution to this very annoying problem! Any help would be appreciated and I am curious if others have this issue. I am hoping that it is something that I can fix though..
    Thanks!

I have the same exact problem. It seems as if I have the computer closed for an extended period of time, I would get an immediate kernel panic when I opened up the computer. So far, according to my panic.log, i have had 9 such crashes.
I did a reset of the PMU, disabled hibernatemode and none of that solved the problem. I'll try reinstalling everything (next week after I get my new external HD) and see if that solves the problem. Maybe this is caused by a hardware flaw? It just recently started to happen, and when I first got my MBP, this type of crash didn't happen. Other than that, my computer has been perfectly stable. Here's a sample of my panic.log
