Kernal Panic early in boot up.
Got myself a brand spankin new MBP 15in 2.4 the other day!
But, first time bootin the sucker up, got a kernal panic not 2 seconds into boot. Didn't even get past the white screen with the apple logo. Hm... Not a good sign... Especially when you're booting it up for the first time at the apple store
Ok, shut down, boot up again. Oh! Kernal panick again. Hmmmm... Shut down, boot up. No problems this time.
So I thought, well, I guess that's that.
Then just last night, tried booting up again, got the same kernal panic at early boot.
So I figure it's probably only when the computer is cold booting. Which seems to me like it would be some kind of hardware issue.
Good thing for me I got AppleCare after learning my lesson with a harddrive on a powerbook but I wanted to see what everyone else thinks of this just for my knowledge.
Laptop is sitting in my car right now, off, hopefully cold enough so that when I go to the Apple store later today it'll panic for the nice guys at the store.
By the way, this is the first product I got with AppleCare, am I supposed to set up some kind of appt. with them or can I just show up?

Well, I took it back to the store to get it exchanged, but they decided to run an Airport upgrade that apparently isn't released through software update... AirportExtremeUpdate2007004.dmg is the file.
So far, no kernal panics... and it's been 2 weeks. Granted, I don't shut down my computer often now that I've completely transferred from my old powerbook.
The laptop does freeze occasionally coming out of sleep, I don't think it's a related issue, but I'll search on it anyway.

Kernal panic/ won't boot from hard drive or installation disc/ error type 1
Friends PowerBook seems to be dying or is possibly dead.
PowerBook G4 model A1138 or M9969LL/A:
15 inch/ 1.67 ... http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBookG4_15-inch_Double-LayerSD.html
K, so my friend's powerbook is in my possession... and not booting.
A week ago, upon booting the laptop, he'd get the old OS9 looking folder flashing with THE happy face and then a question mark. Then, usually, it'd boot. It started taking longer and longer to boot, so he backed up all his stuff. It eventually stopped booting OSx (10.4.10) and came to me asking about how to reinstall Tiger.
As of right now his machine will NOT boot from the hard drive, regularly or in safe mode.
When we try the install CD, we get a kernal panic. It hangs, then tells us to restart. Every time.
Holding down "alt" I tried the hardware diagnostic/ repair thingy from the install disc. It mentions a quick issue with finding Gineva fonts or something and then gives the following errors:
type 1346978644 error 1
type 1346978644 error 1
Invalid memory access at %SRR0:00000000 %SRR1:00083030
Thats about all we got. We are looking for a screw driver to try and remove a stick of ram and see if thats the problem. Any ideas? Hoping for a bad stick of ram or hard drive. Anyone know if for sure the logic board is dead or if there is a way to fix it? Appreciate any feedback. Happy to give more information if you need it!
~joelWhen you did the boot off the original system disk was anything non-Apple externally connected? If not, then you clearly have a hardware problem, and your idea of examining the RAM is not half a bad idea. The only thing you might want to do before that is zapping the PRAM. Sometimes that clears issues such as you describe:
1. First determine if your machine is under 4 years old. If it is, then go ahead
and do step 2. Otherwise do step 3.
2. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
3. Take it to an authorized service center to have the clock battery replaced. That may cause the very issues you described. -
Kernal Panic attack during Boot up
When i boot up i get a kernal panic attack when this screen and says
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001A7BED): Kernel trap at0x00000000, type 14=page fault
BSD process name corresponding to current thread:
I cant quite read after the BSD Thread part seeing as the Kernal message attack comes up on the screen.
I seriously need help.
Running macbook model 2.1 with 2ghz processor 4GB ram. Running Leopard 10.5
This actually happened was updating Leopard when I installed 10.5.. then when it was installing i put the lid down.. then brought it back up after a few mins.. and it was a black screen, pressed the power button.. Nothing? so i switched it off then switched it back on and then this happened..
Now i dont know what to doBoot from your installer disc:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
If you get a kernel panic during the above then you have a hardware problem of some sort. Consider running diagnostics:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
Some "common" error indicators:
SNS - sensor error
MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
MOT - fan error -
Boot up iMac Intel. Kernal Panic can't boot up computer??
I'm fixing my friend iMac Intel first generation Dual Core 32 bit.
Not the lastest one. Since I know more of him with macs.
My friend trip off the power cord of his imac by accident one morning and when
he put the cord back in to the imac to power up.
Is stuck on the loading screen apple logo with a kernal panic and can't get no where.
In the background there is text like in the terminal with saying Apple CPU Power Management Debugger.
How do I resolve this problemHi Frank
Reset the SMC exactly as described in the article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
It could be that the cord or surge protector was damaged, try using a different power cord and a different surge protector.

Kernal Panics when booting Install DVD on new MacBook Pro
First off, let me say that I know that Apple does not officially support OS X Server on their portable machines.
With that out of the way, I have been trying to install Server (the Universal Edition, of course) on the new Santa Rosa MBP that I got last weekend. The Installer DVD will kernal panic when trying to start up the machine. So I took it to my job, where we have a Mac Mini with a Core Solo processor. The Install DVD for 10.4 server boots the mini up just fine. So I put the MBP into target disk mode, and installed server on a partion I had made on the internet MBP disk when I first got it. So the installer has 10.4.7 on it, which I thought might be causing the problem. So with the Mini booted off the MBP partion, I updated the Server install to 10.4.10 and all the other updates. I then restarted the MBP, held down the option key, selected the server partion to boot up from, and the machine still kernal paniced while still booting up (It never gets past the gray Apple Screen with the spinning wheel.
Now I had hoped that the firmware update released today might help with the problem, but when I try to run that installer, it says that the firmware is not needed on my laptop. So I guess they had already installed it at the factory, even though it was not yet publicly availible.
I have looked at the kernal panic logs on the non server version of 10.4 that the machine boots after the kernal panic (when I boot back into server, using the Mini as the boot machine, there is no kernal panic logs), and I have always found the same thing, it looks like something to do with the video driver is causng the problem. The first item that is always in the backtrace is:
com.apple.NVDAResman(4.5.6)@0x500c4000
So I guess I am just wondering if anyone else out there, with a new SR MBP, has has similar problems trying to run server on their new machines? The method you must use is outlined here:

Best of luck. -
Sudden, persistant kernal panics
Hi all.
I am suddenly having a ton of kernal panics. I know there are other threads about this, but I wanted to start one that had my specifics to see if anyone has any ideas.
I had been working on my PowerMac G5 all day on Monday without incident. Suddenly I got a kernal panic. Odd, but no big deal. I rebooted and soon after startup, I got another one. I shut the machine down, came back later and things seemed OK. Then I got another panic. I re-started, heard the chime, then about 5 seconds later, the machine shut off. I turned it on, heard the chime, and 5 seconds later it shut off again. Thinking maybe it had to do with my UPS, I plugged the G5 directly into the wall outlet. It booted up and all seemed well. I updated all my software to the latest version, and a few hours later, kernal panic. I removed all external devices, I re-boot, it loads up and a few minutes later kernal panic. I re-booted again, an that's when it got weird.
During boot-up, I got all sorts of weird writing on the screen, which looked like the old kernal panic (early OSX). The machine sat there frozen. I re-booted and it booted up OK. I used Disk Utility to repair permissions, re-booted and all seemed OK. I worked for an hour, and KERNAL PANIC!
I re-booted, and got the weird screen during startup, re-booted again, OSX comes up....instant kernal panic. I tried re-booting off the OSX install disk, but it seemed to ignore the DVD and booted from the HD.
Just so you know, when this started, it was after an 8 hour day of working. I did not install new software or hardware. Anyone have any ideas??
Thanks!I am trying to help understand what to do.
And a panic is a hardware failure. The system is not to be trusted.
Prevention. Have a plan, a strategy, an emergency system.
It is / was time to get the tow truck and mechanic to look under the hood.
It is not "life as usual."
Using a system in such a state and after any freeze can only make it worse until resolved.
You said you had seen and read some of the other threads and articles, but they didn't hit home on what to do.
I call a kernel panic and what to do a "wake up call."
Sometimes it is as simple as a shorted or bad USB or Firewire cable.
You should post and ask, but there wasn't enough detail or background, and no one can pull a rabbit out of a hat and know what caused your particular machine and system to die and panic.
A 20 step check list of things to rule out, maybe.
When someone comes into the ER, you don't get offered cookies and cake, nor do you want to, you want to know what is wrong and bandages. If "Stop using your system!" seems severe, so be it.
Hopefully anyone after 5 yrs on these forums and using a G5 would also have along the way used a bootable backup and has a spare system that they can use. And has learned to repair their system, learned not that some things are vulnerable and have their weaknesses, like HFS Extended, doing upgrades and updates without backups.
A panic can be from corrupt nvram and 'zapping pram' on a system is probably the first thing that could be done.
I use to get chastised for posting the same "10 rules" type list of what to do when a system crashes, so I stopped, and yet you see the same problems and errors over and over being repeated. -
I have a faithful iMac G4 that will now now longer boot up.
Usually my computer is turned on constantly, occasionally every few weeks or so I restart it due to software updates or just because I hadn't done it for a while. All these problems started after I turned the computer off and unplugged it for an hour or so while some electrical work was done in the bathroom (new switch for the shower).
The only other thing different about the machine is that about 4 months back we installed a new dvd burner as my superdrive had given up the ghost. An engineer friend who knows his stuff did it for me (with me watching, wincing as he pried apart my machine, It is my baby after all ) and all went fine.
Now after turning the computer off for a few hours, I'm constantly getting Kernal panics during the boot up process, but in differing places. Sometimes it's while the grey apple is on screen, sometimes when the screen has gone blue just after. Once in a blue moon it actually loads the operating system only to kernal panic a minute or two later.
So I booted into single user (after looking on the web) and ran fsck -f and it said there was a segmentation error, I then ran /sbin/fsck –fy after reading official apple support documents and looking around a bit more and found that this is apparently what your supposed to type (i'm not a command line guy) and it said all was ok. Each time I ran it it said the HD appears to be ok.
So I booted up with the Tiger install dvd and it kept kernal panicing again and again (at this point i'm thinking - **** it it's going to be hardware related) finally the dvd booted and I ran disk utility to verify the disk and it said the HD was ok. I decided to do a repair permissions and then went to the bathroom (I was getting ready for work) only to come back to a kernal panic.
I've reset pram multiple times, I've removed 3rd party RAM I had installed when I got the machine a few years ago. That I thought has fixed it until the next day it started Kernal panicing again.
I ran the extended hardware check and there was no problems, I then ran the quick check and it got an error with text coming down the screen about memory address's (i think, I know I should have paid more attention) and the option to type reboot.
So I did and tried again, this time I did the quick test first, and it passed, then I tried the extended and I got the same error.
So I turned it all off, I booted up fine till it got to the desktop where it kernal paniced again.
Now I did a pram resett during boot and when it gets to the grey apple I get a kernal panic and a screen full of text.
So I booted the tiger install disk and wiped the HD (it was all backed up), Hoping that this would help...
Nope I now have a completly blank HD and an iMac that will not install an operating system.
It's just got to be hardware hasn't it? From things I've read it looks to be a logic board problem, any idea how much this would cost me to fix in the UK?
So anyone have any idea's about what I can do?Hello,
Those don't sound like Kernel Panics to me. Here are some things to try:
1. Reset the PRAM.
2. Boot from your Tiger Install DVD. From the Menu Bar choose Disk Utility select Macintosh HD on the left hand pane and run Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. Try booting again.
3. Try holding down the shift key after the start-up chime (or there abouts if you still don't have a chime). This boots the iMac in to safe-mode. Go into Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts and remove all the log-in items. If you've added any fonts recently remove those too.
It's probably best if you start a new thread as this will attract more attention from the real experts.
good luck and let us know how you get on.

10.5.4 Produces Kernal Panic
Hi! I just updated to 10.5.4 via Software Update and upon restart got a kernal panic. Another boot into safe mode got me going again with the log it wants to send to Apple which indicated the KP was caused by the Geforce 6200 agp card I recently installed. Another regular boot after the safe boot seems to have gotten it going again although I noticed some weird graphics blinking during startup I hadn't been seeing before. But it seems to be working. Is anyone else using the 6200 card? thanks, Tom
Hi! Update....after repairing permissions I did another restart only to suffer a KP again. A subsequent restart in safe mode got it booted and a subsequent additional restart again got it booted. I'll try the combo updater to see if that makes any difference. Tom

After install of Mavericks, it looks like my system kernal panics and just sits there. I tried waiting over two nights. Tried reinstalling twice, booting ro the repair partition and repairs permissions/drive/verify , with no problems. Tried reseting PVRAM(or whateverit called). Recovery partition now has Mavericks as OS. Im running a iMac i3 27 inch circa 2011. Any ideas? Can still bootcamp into windows.
Thank youbhadotia wrote:Anyway's the file downloaded from dell to update the partition for Studio 1555 is corrupted (checksums don't match). My partition still doesn't boot. I'm working to fix this and will update my post when I'm done.
The file seems to create the CD/DVD/Image and USB just fine. So I used this only to create a CD image which I then wrote on a blank CD which seems to work fine. Also, I played around a bit and had some partial success in booting the partition. I've updated my original opening post with the new findings.
Whew!! what a waste of time! Never want to do all of this again .

I upgraded the ram and hdd a while back(RAM first with no issues, then hdd around 2 months later). The computer started freezing a few days after the hdd upgrade.
I reformatted the hdd and it worked fine for a few weeks then same freezing issue. Instead of wiping the drive again I repaired the disc and this had it fixed for about a month. I was booting in safe mode for a few days with no issue and went about uninstalling 3rd party apps. Then the Kernal panic issue started, When I inserted the OS cd the screen went blank and has not come back on after repeated boots.
Can we put this down to logic board and if so can it be repaired rather than replaced?
Thanksthanks for the reply,
just reinstalled the factory RAM and HDD. Same issue of blank screen. At the moment i have no way of connecting to external monitor.
The OS cd is still in drive and i can hear the drive spinning for a few seconds at the start but it stops after about 20 seconds. -
I will start from the beginning. Last night i was Win XP in VPC on my iMac G5 Rev B. and got a 0x700 error saying their was a PPC fault that occured and windows got currupted and blue screened. I couldn't use windows anymore and VPC also force quited and i got an error saying send error report to MS. So i just closed it out and re-opened and same thing occured so i just restarted my machine figuring it was just a glitch and ever since then in boots to the apple logo and as soon as the dahes start to spin it kernal panics and stops dead in it tracks. I tried restarting a couple of times and same thing occurs. Now i have a wireless keyboard so i can't zap the pram or anything like that. is their anything else i can do to correct this because i have no way to boot from CD or anything like that to run a repair or even re-install mac os x. any help is appreciated thanx.
well i talked to apple chat and they said try resetting the smu and pram and i actually got both to work but when the computer re booted it came back up to the apple loading screen and panicked and then a bunch of text came all over the screen sating unable to find driver for this platform "powermac 8,2"). also it was trying to load something and try and debug it and failed and there was a bunch of hexadecimal code all over the screen and it said something about darwin kernal version 3.8.0 mon oct 3 20:04:04 PT PDT 2005 root: xnu-792.6.22.obj~2/release PPC

Kernal panic/wont boot :
Hello All,
I am experiencing a Kernal Panic problem out of nowhere.
The panic message comes up immediately when I turn the computer on and will not go past the message. It just gives my a panic code and then promps me to turn the computer off.
The computer will boot up fine in Safe Boot though. While in Safe Boot, I have repaired permissions in Disk Utility, as well as cancelled all programs that load at Boot Up.
My system is a Macbook Pro (Sandy Rose model) running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6), In not running any 3rd party external connections. Only thing i have pluged to the MBP is the power cable.
I do have the log of the panic message/crash if anyone can decipher what it says and what I can do to resolve this it would be of great help!
Thanks:

Apple has a 90 day warranty on all repairs. If you are having the exact same issue that was previously repaired by Apple AND have the repair paperwork or your case number, you should call Customer Relations and tell them your predicament.
I don't have the disc that originally came with the Mac unfortunately.
Why not? You need them to troubleshoot. Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html -
Kernal panic, Safe Booting
I have an old Macbook Pro with a Snow Leopard operating system and a battery on its last legs - I keep it plugged in all the time.
Yesterday, and again today, I got the Kernal panic screen. I tried resetting the PRAM to no avail, and finally got the computer to start up again by doing a Safe Boot twice.
In the first Safe Boot (both times) the kernal panic screen I got upon restarting changed from one with purple and blue vertical lines behind the 4-language-message to a gray screen with the kernal panic message, and in the second Safe Boot (both times), the computer successfully started up. Yesterday, I rebooted the machine after the second successful Safe Boot and it started up normally and worked fine until the next kernal panic.
I know that I probably need to reinstall the operating system, but can someone help me understand where the problem is in my machine? Is this what you needed?

Kernal Panic upon Boot from Server OSX 10.4 Install DVD Disk
I'm getting Kernal Panic upon booting from Server OSX 10.4 Install DVD Disk.
I wanted to statup from the install DVD to do a repair permissions and repair disk and i'm getting a kernal panic screen. Anyone know why?
Using a Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC G5, OSX 10.4.10, working fine.
Will no longer boot from dvd disk, not even install cds.
Tried other macs same deal, I can't belive that both sets of disks went bad.
Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.10) 2 GB SDRAMHi moeminator-
You can start the server in FireWire target disk mode and use the drive in the Power Mac to do the deed.
