Hi Scott Mosher!
I have an article here for you that will help you troubleshoot this issue with kernel panics:
OS X: About kernel panics
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3742
See the section toward the bottom of the article labeled “Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic,” but keep in mind this statement in that section:
Diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you would like to avoid this process, or do not know how to perform any of the following steps, consider bringing the Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance. Be sure to ask that, if the drive needs reformatting or replacing, they contact you about escalating your case to a special data recovery service. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!
Cheers,
Braden

  • CS3 freezes when started on Mavericks

CS3 freezes when started on newly installed Mavericks (from 10.8).  Last files are displayed and Regster window appears and then freezes up.  Necessary to Force Quit to get out.  I've "successfully" re-installed CS3 several times but the problem continues.  What gives?

Before is ok, can't remember when this problem show up.
Don't know where to go, please give me a hint.
You have to give us a hint.
    What is your processor?
    How much RAM have you?
What is your video card/ship set?
    What kernel are you running?
I spotted this in your dump:
[drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-2: switching from hotplug detection to polling
In this case, drm means Direct Rendering Management and has to do with your Video subsystem.  An interrupt is where the hardware sends a signal to the processor that something has happened that requires the urgent attention of the processor.  The kernel is protesting that the hardware is barraging it with interrupt requests.

  • New MBP: Kernal Panic on 2nd start-up

No third-party apps have been installed on this thing yet. Opened it up, went through registration process, software update and the subsequent restart. closed the machine after browsing the web for 5 min. This morning, instead of waking up, I get the start-up tone followed by black screen. After a force shutdown/restart, it freezes. On the next attempt to restart, it starts up but gives the message below. Is this a sign of a dud machine or should I not be worried? Any advice on preventing future occurances of this?

Hi, I'm having a similar problem, I have had my macbook pro since late jan, not long after getting it back home to the uk as I bought it in the us I started having kernal panics, spoke to the apple care team they told me to archive and install and check permissions to no avail, spoke to them again to day and the guy just said to re-install os x, don't really want to be doing that as I don't feel it will make any difference, have been reading on a few discussions and thought i would see if you could help, it seems tp happen when I am using skype or Ichat, I've been in contact with skype and they advised me to reinstall but there shouldn't have been a problem anyway and is not something that they have had reported, since re-installing there seems to be no problems but this was only this afternoon, I'm running os x with all the latest updates, and have no unusual third party software could someone please take a look at my panic log and see if they can help, thanks : )

  • I'm getting the kernal panic screen when I put in DVD

My iMac G5, 2 GB has been slow, and occasionally getting the "restart your computer" screen. I ran the Apple Hardware Test on it twice. It passed both times, so I decided it must be software. I proceeded to do a clean install of the OS. Now I'm getting the Kernal Panic screen just as the computer recognizes the disk and is about to launch the installer. I've been reading the forums on Kernal Panic. Could be RAM memory. But could it also be the optical drive if its slow to spin at first?
What info on the "Panic" screen would tell me where the problem is?
    Here's the message:

I've been reading the forums on Kernal Panic. Could be RAM memory. But could it also be the optical drive if its slow to spin at first?
What info on the "Panic" screen would tell me where the problem is?

Your title is a little confusing; are you getting the message ONLY when you put a DVD in, or does it also happen when starting the computer up?
If it's the DVD, is it the OS DVD? Are you sure you are using a PPC DVD and not an Intel DVD? I recall the same panic screen on my own G5 1st gen when I mixed up my Intel DVD with my PPC DVD.
The first line of your panic (panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DEC28): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac12.1") was very similar to mine, except mine had "panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DEC28): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac8.2"

  • USB2 PCI card = Yet Even Another Kernal Panic & Freeze

Its almost "a Tom & Gerry" situation - find the cause of one kernal panic shut down and yet another crops up the very next day without fail. I have had to remove the pci card and have reverted to the previous Wacom driver ! to continue working and stop losing any more studio - downtime !!!
So I wonder .... if its my Mac being so very fussy about PCI cards ?
I have now given up attempting to use a Wacom Tablet plugged into a Lacie NEC chipset PCI card (on a PPC Mac running on Tiger 10.4.11 !

    Hello Tom
It has been an interesting but frustrating experience to date .. esp. as the latest Wacom Tablet Driver V6.1.1-2(RC) ended up tripping out even without the pci card
I am now using only the Macs native USB2 ports:
Rear > (1) keyboard & mouse (2) UPS unit (not using powerchute).
Front > to plug in the Wacom Tablet when required (now running on the previous version Driver V6.1.0-7(RC)
This is the exact card http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=11159
I am way out of my depth as to why
Perhaps your kind expertise may possibly shed some light on this one !

Any thoughts? I have two partitions on the disk - one for the OS and one for my files
How can I access my disk? Can a firewire external link work using my powerbook to acces the PowerMac as a disk?

Can you post some of your crash logs? Might be a clue. See Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • OAS 4.0.8.1 on NT ("PANIC" message when starting OAS)

[This is a reply to the message from HUNTERTJ entitled "OAS 4.0.8.1 on NT", because OTN won't accept a direct reply to the original message]
I had a similar "PANIC" error starting OAS on NT Workstation. I asked Oracle for help, and the fix they gave me was to set up a TCP/IP Loopback Adapter (under a different hardware profile) and use this profile when running OAS. I did this, and re-installed OAS just to be sure, and it now seems to work. No idea why.
    Good luck!

    Hi !!!
I installed OAS 4.0.8.1 on Windows NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 5 (June 1999).
I have a Oracle Database installed at the same machine (8.0.4 EE) because I installed OAS at other ORACLE_HOME. I follow the steps (workaround) showed at the document "Latest Oracle Application Server Release Notes. January 2000".
Hence, I created other user administrator for OAS and I put the entries for OAS at the User Path for this admin.
The system Path contains the entries for the database.

    Hi Tomas,
Did I read in another thread that you have a Thomson-Alcatel SpeedTouch modem ?
Can you tell us which model and which firmware it is running ?
With some of their range it can get intermittent results.
Out of 50 Buddies you get about 10 you cna contact all the time, a similar number of now and then contact and about 30 who you can never contact.
If you Buddy list is much smaller you may not have noticed this.
Also things are subject to change when the OS is updated or Upgraded.
Can you also tell us which device is doing DHCP ?

  • Aperture 2.1 stuck or freezing when started

After the splash screen when I see the main screen, the beachball starts and doesn't stop. Except for the beachball the application freezes? I'm not sure what to do, I've rebooted, restarted I'm out of options. I'm in the middle of uploading a wedding so the timing is horrible. Also I don't use the vault. I hope someone has a solution for me.

  • Firefox freezes when starting a download

When I start a download and choose the destination, Firefox freezes for about 2-3 seconds before starting to download. In that time, Firefox doesn't respond and acts like it crashed.
My computer is completely new, running Win8.1 64Bit from an SSD, Core i5 Quad, 8GB Ram and Avast Antivir. FF is configured to clear the cache everytime I exit.
It's almost the same as in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/937267 but in my case, every download makes FF freeze, not only the first.
I already tried deactivating the Web Protection of Avast and the integrated scanning feature of Firefox but this didn't solve the problem.

Try using DownThemAll, a Firefox addon, it works perfect.

  • Libreoffice freezes when starting to TYPE ANYTHING. Cant reproduce.

I cannot do anything in libreoffice. When I first installed my default language showed up as afrikaan. I have fixed that by removing what I think was libreoffice-af. I have disabled jre and all extensions. I have tried reinstalling. (dont know how to purge packages though.) Basically I start math or writer, type a character and the whole program freezes and I get a popup saying libreoffice is unresponsive... click force quit. I have a feeling that if I completely purge libreoffice and reinstall *manually* (libreoffice-common libreoffice-writer libreoffice-math libreoffice-gnome) instead of installing by group it would solve the problem. I have searched the pacman wiki but can't find anything similar to apt-get remove --purge (came from aptosid).

Try moving the file ~/.conf/.libreoffice to something like ~/.conf/.xxxlibreoffice then restart libreoffice before re-installing it.
I, too, came from aptosid and find pacman much easier to work with than dpkg or apt.  No need for purge in the debian sense.  However, we need to deal with *.pacnew files now and then.

  • [SOLVED] System freezes when starts using swap

When my system starts using swap, it completely freezes. Switching to tty doesn't work either.
There is already a topic on this problem, but the only advice it has is "use zswap" or "do not open 20 tabs at the same time", which is not really a solution imho.
I'm using a swap file in my home dir with swapon.

  • Kernal panics, freezes and crashes

I have been carrying on a discussion on the Folding@Home forum here:
    http://forum.folding-community.org/viewtopic.php?t=13790
but it is becoming more than a problem specifically with F@H it seems. (F@H is a medical research project run by Stanford University and it has excellent, though currently perplexed, help forums). The F@H forum discussion currently runs to 6 pages so far, but round about page 5 I start to post what logs I can find which might be relevant.
I have been Folding for a fair time now, without any incident, but a few weeks back, whenever I was due to return a unit the cursor and screen froze and I had to power off, leave the machine for several minutes, and then reboot. the completed unit was lost yet a new unit was downlkoaded and processed. this has happened to my last three units.
In addition, I moniter F@H via a front-end called InCrease which as a facility to stop processing. Whenever I stopped F@H, within 60 seconds, usually much less, the syetem kerneled. It does not do this when I stop any other process.
I have uninstalled several bits of software which had been added recently: Intego Virusbarrier X4, Intego Personal BackUp X4, Intego NetUpdateX4, Intego CommonServices X4, LittleSnitch and WeatherDock.
Since these have been unistalled, whenever I stop F@H processing, it doesn't kernel but crashes with white text on black lines superimposed over the desktop. I don't understand what it says, but two points of interest might be: invalid (pmap) and unaligned frame address 0x8E008821
Can anyone please tell me what is going on? I suspect that F@H is implicated (obviously) but that it is not guilty - if it were, then I would have experinced this problem before.
I have updated all software via Software Update so I should be fully up to date.
Any advice would be very very much appreciated. If you require any more detail, logs, information, etc. then just let me know and I'll do what I can - although I am a technophobe and don't really understand much about what goes on!
    700MHz CRT G3 iMac slot-loading CD-R/W   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Yesterday, I again repaired permsissions and verified the disk with Disk Utility with no errors reported other than "normal" permission type errors, mainly on widgets;
    Then I:
    Ran OnyX maintenance in full (every available option);
    Ran OnyX Cleaning except the options for Cookies, Bookmark icons, Form values, Obsolete items of Mail folder and Mail downloads;
    Ensured that I had installed all available updates via Software Update (there were none when I checked);
    Safe booted and run fsck -fy several times with no errors reported on any pass;
    Cursed and swore out loud.
And something has worked, but I really don't know what the problem was or what actually cured it although I suspect that OnyX did the trick, maybe in conjunction with one of the other utilities which I ran yesterday.
The last Folding unit uploaded correctly and I've been credited with it - currently I'm working a Tinker with an extimated 11 day turnaround.
Prior to that expected return I will reinstall everything which I uninstalled and try stopping the unit from time to time to see if the crashes have returned. Better a recoverable freeze mid-process than to lose it all at the end.
On a recommendation on another thread I shall be looking at Applejack later, as it is alleged to be more "powerful" than fsck -fy.
I'll only report back either to answer any subsequent posts or if it all goes wrong again.
    Many thanks again.

    Thanks in advance!

Yes I think that's it. The Play > Pause trick didn't work on my source device, but what does work, is if I have two or more seconds of silence at the start of a track, is to press the RECORD button in Audition the moment PatchMix's "LOCK" indicator lights up. (I just put Audition and Patchmix on the screen, side by side.)
Unfortunately some discs have only 1 second or so at the start of the first track, so that doesn't work then. Audition seems to need at least 1 to 2 seconds (at least in Edit mode) to initiate the recording after pressing the RECORD button. Would be nice to reduce that latency, if there are any tricks - maybe using Multitrack mode?
