Kernal Panic in OS X Server
I need help resolving a kernal panic in OS X Server on a MacPro. I disconnected all of my peripherals and restarted in hopes that it would clear with no luck. Now I am not sure what to do next. I have the original install disc but of course cannot get it into the computer. Apple support is closed. Any help will be appreciated.
As an update, I did everything it said to do in the Apple publication including zapping my PRAM with no results.

I'm getting Kernal Panic upon booting from Server OSX 10.4 Install DVD Disk.
I wanted to statup from the install DVD to do a repair permissions and repair disk and i'm getting a kernal panic screen. Anyone know why?
Using a Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC G5, OSX 10.4.10, working fine.
Will no longer boot from dvd disk, not even install cds.
Tried other macs same deal, I can't belive that both sets of disks went bad.

You can start the server in FireWire target disk mode and use the drive in the Power Mac to do the deed.

Sudden Kernal Panics with Production Server
I was called in today because a departmental supervisor had to manually restart their production server today and the application that ran on it didn't restart properly. After some looking and then another controlled restart to get the application going again, the server kernal paniced. From actualy examination, it appears this is what happened the first time.
As the server is in production mode, I've not taken any steps with Dr. Smoke's troubleshooting list, but I have pulled the panic.log and I'm posting it here. If someone has any clue where I should start, that would be helpful!

Could this be a processor flaking out? I'm sure I'll have to do this after hours, so any head start I can get would be greatly appreciated!
PowerBook G4 17 Mac OS X (10.3.9) 1.5G RAMHi, L.
The panic cited, i.e.
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x000E7FF4): vnode_put(1d95210): iocount < 1</tt>
implies something is amiss either with affected Mac's hard drive directory (potentially affecting either file information or virtual memory swap files) or your RAM. Processor or programming errors are also possible, but I'd say less likely.
A vnode is defined here as "An in-memory data structure containing information about a file."
The particular message sited in the panic comes from the vfs_subr.c component of the operating system, concerned with "External virtual filesystem routines."
I suggest you troubleshoot this off-hours using my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ, as you noted. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
If you look at this Google search you'll find some similar reports that find issues with hard drive files, RAM, bad NIC, and related things that the troubleshooting steps in my FAQ would help you isolate. However, follow my FAQ step-by-step rather than skipping around as it's designed to find high-probability / low-effort causes up front.
Good luck!

Windowserver crashes and kernal panics from iPhoto in Mountain Lion
I am using a Mid2010 MBP 15inch i7. I have just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. Currently whenever I try to open iPhoto my MBP completely crashes and reboots woith each report stating a windowserver crash or occasionaly a kernal panic. I was having similar problems in Lion when with windowserver crashes when switching between windows or scrolling in Numbers or switching to iPhoto from other apps. I upgraded to ML because I was told this may fix the issue. Now i can't keen open iPhoto. I have Pram restarted and iPhoto opens but as soon as an image is selected I have another window server crash. Pre ML install I did a clean install of Lion and it made no difference.
Posted below is a copy of my last error report. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully no one here told you that. A common theme is people blaming all problem on Lion or Mountain Lion, whatever operating system was just released and telling people with obvious hardware problems that they need to wait for a "bug fix". Updates come and updates go - taking warranties with them - but no fix ever happens.
There is a small possibility that the "Soundflower" kernel extension is giving you problems. It is very unusual to see a kernel panic without Soundflower being listed. If you remove that and still have panics, then it is definitely a hardware problem. -
Kernal Panics when booting Install DVD on new MacBook Pro
First off, let me say that I know that Apple does not officially support OS X Server on their portable machines.
With that out of the way, I have been trying to install Server (the Universal Edition, of course) on the new Santa Rosa MBP that I got last weekend. The Installer DVD will kernal panic when trying to start up the machine. So I took it to my job, where we have a Mac Mini with a Core Solo processor. The Install DVD for 10.4 server boots the mini up just fine. So I put the MBP into target disk mode, and installed server on a partion I had made on the internet MBP disk when I first got it. So the installer has 10.4.7 on it, which I thought might be causing the problem. So with the Mini booted off the MBP partion, I updated the Server install to 10.4.10 and all the other updates. I then restarted the MBP, held down the option key, selected the server partion to boot up from, and the machine still kernal paniced while still booting up (It never gets past the gray Apple Screen with the spinning wheel.
Now I had hoped that the firmware update released today might help with the problem, but when I try to run that installer, it says that the firmware is not needed on my laptop. So I guess they had already installed it at the factory, even though it was not yet publicly availible.
I have looked at the kernal panic logs on the non server version of 10.4 that the machine boots after the kernal panic (when I boot back into server, using the Mini as the boot machine, there is no kernal panic logs), and I have always found the same thing, it looks like something to do with the video driver is causng the problem. The first item that is always in the backtrace is:
com.apple.NVDAResman(4.5.6)@0x500c4000
So I guess I am just wondering if anyone else out there, with a new SR MBP, has has similar problems trying to run server on their new machines? The method you must use is outlined here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302960
Best of luck. -
Kernal panics - daily? Help?
Hi Folks
Maybe you can help... lately my imac intel has been kernal panicing.. a lot.
I can't narrow it down to one bit of software, or anything. Today it just kernal panic'd and showed that nasty multi-lingual message while I was watching a DVD and not even touching the thing...
Now - I saved the bug report, but it doesn't mean much to me. But can anyone else shed light on it? I'll post it below. It looks like it could be something with USB... anyone? Please? It makes me sad!
Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Thanks for the quick replies!
I ran the hardware test... and nothing showed up. Did the extended tests and all 'appears' to be fine.
So that's a good thing, I suppose.
I've not installed any new RAM or anything, and the only new thing added in the past few months would be my apple keyboard (which is lovely!).
I've disconnected all stuff that wasn't necessary (Sorry, Palm, you served me well but Blackberry has now made you obsolete!). I'm currently leaning towards blaming my HP C4180 printer. I remember that it had some nasty coded error message on it a while ago - and it's not been too reliable lately. So I've disconnected that and am hoping not to see the kernal panic again...
It's hard to troubleshoot something that doesn't happen at a specific point or when I'm doing something... and as this is my main machine I just have to wait it out and see if it happens again.
Hoping it doesn't and I can safely blame the printer! Otherwise will have to blame one of the 5 external hard drives. But they all tested out okay.
I will give it a week and if it doesn't happen again, Hurrah!
If it IS the printer, how can I hardware troubleshoot that? Or should I contact HP?
Thanks again for your suggestions. I spent ages looking for my hardware test disc until I read that it's on the Install disc. Doh! Shows how old fashioned I am, eh?
That Xlab article is brilliant.. have bookmarked it, but hope I don't have to look at it again!

I just bought a PowerMac G4 450MHz/512K RAM/20GB AGP Graphics (1999) for $140. With the addition of a 70GB internal drive, I achieved terabyte status but part of that real estate is turning out to be Green Acres. In reality, the machine is loud, large and filthy--dust and cobwebs and chickens running around, a mix and match of semi-upgraded hardware, with lots of room under the hood and a whole partition devoted to the life's work of a hippie physicist-artist. I've barelt seen the desktop, however. It doesn't boot half the time and a few minutes ago, it experienced a kernal panic. When it starts up, it sounds like my old Mercedes diesel (note to Apple designers: it should have a smokestack). I'm supposed to install OS 9 so I can update the firmware.
My question is this: when does roughing it in order to get some use out of it turn into masochism? What the lowest processor speed that still can happily run Tiger?
Chris1) The only way to ascertain clues as to if the video card might be the problem is to review the panic logs. You've not posted any panic logs, but given the mix-and-match mess you have on hand, they may not help at this point.
2) Try RAM testing as suggested in my FAQ. If memory serves, Power Mac (PM) G4's of that vintage used PC100 RAM, though now only PC133 is available. You can see this by visiting Crucial.com and configuring memory for your PM G4 450: only PC133 is available.
I'd start out by sticking with one speed of RAM, e.g. using just the PC100 or PC133. You need a minimum 256 MB of RAM for Tiger, though it only starts to perform well at 521 MB or better, 1GB or more being ideal.
Crucial has a FAQ indicating one can "generally" mix-and-match PC100 SDRAM and PC133 SDRAM, but the system will operate at the speed of the slowest module, e.g. PC100 in this case. Go to this page (where I configured RAM for your PM G4 450), and in the tabbed area below the list of RAM, click FAQs, then click "Can I mix and match speeds?"
3) May or may not be relevant.
4) Describe "unsuccessful." Do you see a specific error message or simply the kernel panic alert when you attempt to boot from the retail Tiger DVD?4.1. It's also quite possible the optical drive is shot. Does it boot from the OS 9 disk?
4.2. Another possibility: the optical drive in that Mac is not DVD-capable, i.e. it's a CD-ROM drive, not a CD/DVD-ROM The Tiger retail disk is a DVD and can only be used on a Mac with a DVD-capable drive.
If your TiBook has a DVD-compatible optical drive, you could try the advice in this tip on Mac OS X Hints to install Tiger on the PM G4 450 without a DVD-compatible drive from your computer using FireWire Target Disk Mode.
If the PM G4 450's drives can be see by the TiBook with the PM G4 450 in Target Disk Mode, then I'd suggest erasing the PM G4 450's drives with Disk Utility from the TiBook, adding the Security Option to "Zero All Data." Then you can try installing Mac OS 9 on the PM G4 450, updating its firmware if needed, then installing Tiger, again via target disk mode from the TiBook if the PM G4 450's optical drive is not DVD-capable.5) Not particularly relevant. They can be repartitioned later or via Target Disk Mode as described above.
6) re: OS 9 to OS X: Both work equally well. Mac OS X may be a little slower given the RAM you have, but RAM is cheap to upgrade. Both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X can be installed on the same partition, or you can install Mac OS 9 (assuming the optical drive works).
Please respond by corresponding numbers. Numbering your questions as you did (at least up to the last paragraph ;-)) is good as it makes it easier to respond.
Good luck!

Kernal panics using Unity Web Player in FireFox
Hi all,
We are developing a Unity Wep Player application and every now and again we get a kernal panic when running it in FireFox. It only happens on one of our older Macs. Its a Mac Book Pro 7.1. I was wondering if anyone has experienced something similar and could shed any light on the issue. I have logged the kernal panic details below.
Cheers,

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -

In that folder look for the bt broadband or whatever the update was. It will have .kext on it. Throw it in the trash and restart.

Kernal panic/wont boot :
Hello All,
I am experiencing a Kernal Panic problem out of nowhere.
The panic message comes up immediately when I turn the computer on and will not go past the message. It just gives my a panic code and then promps me to turn the computer off.
The computer will boot up fine in Safe Boot though. While in Safe Boot, I have repaired permissions in Disk Utility, as well as cancelled all programs that load at Boot Up.
My system is a Macbook Pro (Sandy Rose model) running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6), In not running any 3rd party external connections. Only thing i have pluged to the MBP is the power cable.
I do have the log of the panic message/crash if anyone can decipher what it says and what I can do to resolve this it would be of great help!
Thanks:

I've had previous problem before with the video card, its acually a recall on my particular model's GForce card that Apple fixed but the problem came back.
Apple has a 90 day warranty on all repairs. If you are having the exact same issue that was previously repaired by Apple AND have the repair paperwork or your case number, you should call Customer Relations and tell them your predicament.
I don't have the disc that originally came with the Mac unfortunately.
Why not? You need them to troubleshoot. Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html -
Grey Curtain Kernal Panic (w/log) - need help in deciphering
I read a couple of other threads on this event, which happened for the first time yesterday after waking my MBP from sleep. In both threads requests were made for the log(s), but I didn't see any posted. I have both the kernal panic log and the console entries surrounding the time it happened to mine. Can someone give a look at them and give me an idea whether there's something to look further into, repair, or replace.
Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

today when i rebooted after a KP, there was overlapping type/menus in the finder menu bar at top of screen.
i ran a repair permissions (twice), here were results:

Netboot: kernal panic at startup (clients) - no sharepoint tab for NetBootSP0
Hey all:
I'm trying to set up a Netboot image. Netboot Service is running, as well as NFS and AFP for the NetBootSP0 and NetBootClients0 sharepoints. Holding down N finds the NetBoot server OK, but I get a kernal panic when I select it. I get the globe and then the gear, and then PANIC. "NFS server refused mount" is the message.
I've searched around quite a bit. I think I may have a lead but don't quite know how to fix it.
When looking at the sharepoints in Server Admin I see the following for the two relevant sharepoints...
NetBootClients0:
NetBootSP0:
From what I've read, I have to set the NFS export to World, but the NetBootSP0 sharepoint doesn't offer a SharePoint tab (compare areas indicated with the red circle), so I'm unable to select Protocol Options and confirm the NFS and/or AFP settings. Should this tab be there? Why might it not be?
Any help is appreciated. I've been having quite the week looking into this.
Thanks so much in advance.
MichaelI no longer have a 10.6 server setup, so I'm going from memory here...
It looks like the sharepoint wasn't created properly. I would go into the NetBoot panel and completely tear down the configuration (disable ports, sharepoints, save.) Then reconfigure it and see if that causes the sharepoint to be configured properly.
