Kernal Panic on Mid-2007 Macbook Pro 17inch
So, after capturing some HDV footage this afternoon in Final Cut Pro, I shut down all my applications and closed my lid on my macbook pro and when I came back from work hours later, I got a grey screen and had to reboot, in which I got the kernel panic screen. After running the Hardware test off the system disc 1 a few times, and reset the PRAM, I finally was able to get to the desktop to write this. This is a copy/paste of the last panic from the log file.

can anyone give me any clarification as to how this panic was caused so I can make sure not to have it happen again. I'm currently contemplating a full system re-install if I keep getting these panics, I can't have my work computer spazzing out all the time.
Took it into my local apple store, CPU failed hardware test, so a new logic board is being put in. Question has been answered.

I can only run Windows on my Mid 2007 MacBook Pro :(
So, a weird thing happened recently. A friend of mine was trying to get his old PowerMac G4 working, but his DVD drive wasn't working, so I booted my computer into Target Disk mode so that we could restore his computer using my DVD drive. After we were able to get it installed, I tried to reboot my computer back into Mountain Lion. Upon restarting the computer, I noticed that the OS wouldn't boot. After playing with that for a little while, I backed up my files onto another iMac (again, using Target Disk mode) and tried to reinstall the OS. When I put in the Mountain Lion DVD and tried to boot from it, it didn't work. So I tried my Lion disk, also didn't work. Tried Snow Leopard and was able to get it to install, but I wasn't able to use my keyboard and mouse upon getting to the "Select Language" screen. I finally thought "screw this" and made an appointment with an Apple Genius (who was quite helpful) at the Apple Store near me. I showed up and we tried a bunch of things to no avail. He ran the Apple Hardware Test and that nothing was wrong with the computer. I did have non-apple RAM in my computer, so we tried switching that out. No luck. I also told him that I switched Hard Drives to another 320 GB to try and see if that was the problem. That wasn't the fix either. After trying all of that stuff, I tried installing Windows 7, and ironically enough (since its an Mac), and it worked. I am now using my Mid 2007 MacBook Pro with Windows 7 only and I still can't install MacOS (which I miss big time!). The Genius said that he had never seen this before and was at a loss (couldn't think of another thing to try). Instead of leaving it with them, I took it home with me as I needed a computer for School as I am a High School Teacher. I also am a bit of a Computer Engineering guy (built my own computers, been installing OSes for 10 - 15 years, etc) and while I like to consider myself a modest person, I will call myself a self proclaimed expert.
Has anyone heard / seen this happen?
I've searched high and low on the internet for this and haven't found anything. ****, even the Genius has never heard of anything and gave me his business card and told me to drop him a line if I am able to figure out the problem.
I'm really hoping someone can help me shed some light on this subject as I feel like I have tried completely everything.
Thanks in advance,
ToddTake your MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a free diagnostic examination. Since these symptoms are 'regular' and not intermittent, they should be able to determine what the problem is and the cure.

Kernal Panic on 15 inch macbook pro
Hi, i'm new here so i'm not sure if this is the right place to post.
I had a kernel panic on my 15inch macbook pro just now. I know it's just one panic so far but i can't afford to let my guard down because i need my mac as i'm having my final semester projects and my mac just can't die on me as of yet.
As i was booting up my mac, the dock and everything appeared except for the right side of my finder toolbar which has all the battery icon, wireless icons on it. The Finder tabs were present but just the ones on the right side that wasn't present at all.
And suddenly, this greyish hue just comes down on my mac screen like a curtain call of some sort and the kernel panic screen appears telling me that my mac needs to be restarted by holding on the power button.
I did it and my mac's fine for now.
The error log shows this:

Could it be possible that my USB mouse caused it?
I'm using this USB mouse which i have no idea cause i got it from my windows desktop =X I mean it has been working fine all along so i'm not sure whether it is the USB mouse.
Anyways, i did plug in my USB mouse when i was booting up.
Disk utility pass verifications and my S.M.A.R.T Status is verified. I haven't done any hardwire test as of yet.
I hope someone here can provide me with the answers. And apologies if i posted on the wrong sub forum X_X;;You're welcome, Hayashi Ao Toshi
Thanks for letting me know you found the link helpful.
In addition to "telling exactly what is a kernal panic", the article also gives you troubleshooting tips to track down the cause and fix those things that users can correct without help from a professional Apple Service Technician.
Because you report that the only peripheral you have connected is a USB Mouse, and especially if it is a third-party device or you added software to make it work, it should not take you long to use the suggestions in the linked article to disconnect your USB mouse and uninstall (follow the software developer's instructions on how to uninstall) to test to see if that corrects your problems.
We will watch for your status updates and hope you get it working easily.
Cheers,

Mid 2007 Macbook Pro will not boot from windows 7 DVD
I'm trying to install Windows 7 64 bit on to my mid 2007 MBP. The DVD is valid, boots on a PC and I was able to load WIndows 7 into a VMWare fusion virtual machine on the very same system. I am convinced from those actions I have a good DVD and a good DVD drive.
What happens is the screen goes black and "1. 2. and Choose type of DVD boot:" appear. ( I may have the phrase slightly wrong) No matter what I type nothing happens. I've gone into the boot selecter and same thing happens if I select the DVD.so you did not burn the DVD from ISO? that is what this usually is.
the error and yours being 2007 says you are trying 64-bit and your Mac does not support 64-bit versions it has 32-bit ROM (and likely cannot upgrade past Lion when 10.8 Mountain Lion comes out).

Kernel Panic Issue - mid 2010 MacBook Pro
I need some help with this kernel panic situation I'm experiencing. The number of panics have progressively gotten worse in the past couple months, and had increased to a panic about every half hour.
Today I went to see the Apple Geniuses and they did a complete erase of my hard drive and reinstall of OSx 10.6.8. I have yet to add any new programs since thehard drive wipe. I was actually trying to download Adobe CS6 dmg when my computer had a kernel panic and forced me to shutdown. (I was also running Safari when that happened.)
I was assured by the Apple Genius (on this visit and the one a couple months ago) that there is nothing wrong with any of my hardware. My machine has also passed every hardware test I've done. We thought the initial kernel panic situation was due to 3rd party software from X-rite (Color Munki) as that showed up on my reports.
I don't know what the problem is now since my machine has been wiped.
Can anyone here please help?
Here's my panic report:

The Apple Genius ran a full diagnostic of my hardware today. I ran the Apple Hardware Test a couple days ago. Everything says hardware is not the issue. I'm really not sure what is happening since it keeps passing multiple hardware tests and there are no 3rd party software additions. I have read of other people having OSx kernel panics with 10.6.8.
I did update software that Apple recommended when I turned my computer on -- Safety Update and Java. Other than that, I haven't added any other software since my hard drive wipe (since my CS6 wouldn't complete before the kernel panic). -
What is max internal hard drive transfer rate compatible with a 2007 MacBook Pro?
In attempt to upgrade my mid-2007 MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo), I bought a Seagate 750GB listed as compatible with my computer on MacSales.com . . .
Seagate Momentus XT ST750LX003 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache 2.5" SATA 6.0Gb/s Solid State Hybrid Drive -Bare Drive
Installation appeared to go well and I ran an extended hardware test with no issues found. However, the drive is listed at 5.46 TB (would be nice) and I get an input/output error when attempting to partition. I can initiate an erase, but after the time I would suspect it would take to erase the drive, I get an input/output error - it seems to appear after the first 750 GB of the '5.5 TB' was erased. At all times, the drive is not recognized when I attempt to install OS X from original discs.
I suspect the 6.0 GB/s transfer capacity of the hard drive is not compatible with the MacBook Pro. The drive came with 4 jumper pins but no jumper and no label diagram to set a slower transfer rate. I called Seagate, Newegg, OWC, and Apple, but no one has compatibility info for my MacBook Pro. To them, it appears I am running the first tests of this new technology with an 'older' MacBook Pro.
My MBP has had no issues - I'd like to keep her going with the optimum internal hard drive capacity, but don't necessarily want to set up a test bench in my house (though my kids would enjoy destroying it) and pay several shipping and restocking fees to test new hard drives.
The original drive had a 1.5 GB/s transfer rate. Does anyone know the maximum transfer rate compatible with a 2007 MacBook Pro? 3.0 GB/s? 1.5 GB/s? Thank you.No spinning hard drive will transfer data faster then 60-80MB a second. The XT models have a flash storage area that is used when reading and writing data that can make it Appear faster in some situations. That flash memory if only 8 or 16GBs in side, I forget which one.
The drie is rated to work on 6GB SATA bus but it certainly can not transfer data that fast. It should be backword compatible to work on slower buses.
Your drive is 750GBs in size. Not wure where you are getting this 5.5TB (that is 5.5 Tera Bytes which is 5500 Giga Bytes. Your drive is under 1TB)
What are you using to partition the drive? Disk Utilities from the original install DVD?
You need to install on your old drive, Update it from the Apple Website then clone it to the new drive. The version of OSX you are using may not function correctly with that large of a drive. Or get yourself a copy of Snow Leopard, retail disk for $29 from Apple, and do all the partitioning and installing with that version od OSX. -
Performance unacceptable after installing lion on late 2007 MacBook Pro
I have a mid-2007 MacBook Pro with 2Gb of memory and a 2.4GHz Intel Core2Duo. Since installing Lion, Safari is all but unusable, it takes forever to load, every page I try to load stops the entire computer with the spinning beach ball, I haven't even tried flash sites. iTunes hangs every time I download a podcast at the processing file stage. I keep iTunes open to feed my AppleTV, but after a few hours of watching I have to restart iTunes because everything starts to hang. To say nothing of what happens when iTunes starts automatically downloading podcasts. Syncs with my iPad have been hit or miss. The entire machine seems slow and sluggish. I tried running one app at a time, and that helped some, but it didn't fix the problem. I am assuming this is a RAM issue and have ordered more, but Apple said it would work with 2Gb of RAM. I don't call this working.
So my question is does it save memory to run apps in full screen or should I keep them as just windows? I have tried to kill all the extras, and I have been trying to just do one thing at a time, but I have honestly never had this kind of reaction to a new OS when the machine was in spec. And I have been upgrading since system 7. Is 4Gb going to be enough? Is the processor just not fast enough to handle it? Upgrading to a new machine is not an option at all, and I really like the working bits of Lion I have seen, but am I stuck?I haven't done permissions yet, but I have rebooted several times. I had an issue with the superdrive not recognizing DVDs, so I zapped the PRAM and did the SMC thing. Plus, I've tried rebooting just to see if that would help, but it has not.
I have been watching istat and there's some free memory but not a lot. I was fine under snow leopard, I never had any troubles until I started running a lot of stuff at once. I agree that this is almost certainly memory. It gets worse the more things I try to do at once. Everything hangs whenever there's an operation to be done (syncing, downloading). It just feels like the machine is choking.
I saw an article earlier on one of the Mac RSSs that the writer was having problems with Safari consuming up to a gig of memory just sitting idle with a few tabs open. I'm not going to bother with Safari until I put the memory in, Chrome runs pretty well, even if I can't really do the full-screen thing. I guess at this point I'm just looking for help for what I can do to conserve memory until more arrives. And I'm a little annoyed at Apple for saying Lion works with 2Gb of RAM when it really doesn't. If you can't use the browser or the iTunes, how can you even hope to run Photoshop? iMovie takes 5 minutes to load and when it does it's full of visual glitches.
I guess I'll try permissions and see if that helps. Thanks for your ideas though. -
Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting due to Kernel Panic. Ideas for how to fix?
So my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps randomly restarting, and giving me a screen that says something like "your computer restarted due to a problem."
Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

Mid 2010 macbook pro panic shutdown
My mid 2010 Macbook pro is experiencing an increasing number of black screen shut downs.. 3 or 4 a day currently.
Often this occurs when the keyboard or mouse is touched after it has been idle for a short period, and sometimes mid use.
Ive tried running without any peripherals to no effect and carried out basic disc doctor / onyx procedures to no lasting effect.
Any interpretation of this would be a great help.
Here is a crash report ..
thxYou have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they might still be covered.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired free of charge, and you don't want to pay for the service, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
Mid-2010 Macbook Pro Kernel Panic
Hi, I have a Mid-2010 MacBook pro (2.66 GHz Core i7) running OSX 10.6.8 that has been frequently crashing/kernel panic recently. This happens mostly when I am playing games, such as league of legends, but has also happened during times of low usage (ie simple web browsing or typing a document).
This is the error message that I recieve:

Help please!jasonSan wrote:
I took my computer into the Apple store, and they ran extended diagnostics on it, finding nothing. However, they told me that the problems sounded like a logic board failure, and sent it to get it repaired. They quoted me the flat-rate $310 repair fee, because I had purchased my MacBook 3 years and 2 weeks ago. Is there nothing else I can do, or should I still fight to get it repaired free of charge?
Apple says that you can only get the logic board replaced for free if your computer was purchased less than 3 years ago, so you have to pay for the logic board. However, you can consider lucky: logic boards are much more expensive than the cost of the one that Apple is going to install -
Why does my mid-2010 macbook pro keep restarting? Kernel panic?
Please help,
I work solely on my mid-2010 macbook pro. Lately it has been restarting itself more frequently. I should take it in, but it's hard to be without it for any extended period of time. I was hoping someone could take a look at my crash report and make sense of it?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution. -
Mid-2012 macbook pro gets kernel panics when waking from sleep
Hi all,
I got a new mid-2012 Macbook Pro running Lion (10.7.5) at the end of Oct which started kernel panicking pretty much from day one. The kernel panics only occur when the computer is put to sleep and reawaken after more than an hour or so has passed. I get a grey screen that eventually shows text like "Your computer was restarted because of a problem. Please wait a few seconds or press any key to continue" and then the OS boots up again. Bizarrely, this doesn't usually happen if the computer has only been asleep for a short time - i.e. 15 min or less.
Below is the kernel panic log, which seems to suggest there's an issue with the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics card.
Anyone have any idea what the problem is? Advice is much appreciated.

Serial # W87*****Z67 OS 10.7.4 is my late 2007 MacBook Pro (black) but when attempting to purchase X Mountain Lion upgrade I get message that hardware is not supported. But X Mountain Lion tech spec says mid to late 2007 Macbook pros supported. Any thoughts?

Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15" Blacks Out Without Warning
Quick Summary of Problem: My MacBook Pro is currently shutting down without warning. It would be more accurate to say that the screen goes blank but the machine remains on as can be heard by the fan. Nothing resolves it without powering down and restarting. It has occurred when attached to a power source or via the battery.
My machine specs: Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15” with 500GB hard drive, 8GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics/nVidia GeForce GT 330M with 512MB, anti-glare 15” screen with max resolution 1680 x 1050). Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with 2013-001 Security Patch installed.
I have AppleCare which commenced when I first bought the machine in July 2010.
System Profiler says my battery condition is ‘Normal’. Cycle count: 610.
Detailed Summary of Problem: Back in January, my MacBook Pro shut down several times without warning. Each time, I was creating selections on high resolution imagery in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Not long after, I saw the ‘MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7’ relased on Feb 12 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1633) and installed it via Software Update. By coincidence or not, my MBP behaved much better afterwards and the seemingly random blank screens requiring a restart disappeared.
But then I installed the ‘Security Update 2013-001 (Snow Leopard)’(http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1642) via Software Update and that’s the only thing I can really remember changing to my system. Since then, the black-outs have reappeared. As before, I was usually using Photoshop and working with high resolution imagery. However, one time the machine blacked-out, I was simply doing a two-finger scroll on the built-in trackpad whilst in Chrome (Version 25.0.1364.172).
The blackout has occurred twice now not being connected to power, and twice with it being connected to a wall socket. Needless to say, I lost work in Photoshop (even though I’ve begun to save more regularly) and now it feels like it’s a ticking time bomb and I don’t know when it’s going to go off.
One thing I’ve found rather odd is that in the crash log, the kernal version doesn’t seem right for Snow Leopard:
Kernel version:
Darwin Kernel Version 10.8.0: Tue Jun 7 16:33:36 PDT 2011; root:xnu-1504.15.3~1/RELEASE_I386
System model name: MacBookPro6,2 (Mac-F22586C8)
The full crash log can be found at the bottom of this post.
Fixes I’ve tried:
1) Resetting the NV-RAM has done nothing. (was suggested
2) I’ve tried reinstalling the ‘MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7’ by downloading the manual installer from Apple, however it now says ‘Alert: This software is not supported on your system’ which in a way makes sense given I’d already applied the firmware update, but a more accurate message along the lines of ‘This firmware update has already been installed’ would be more reassuring.
3) If all else fails, I could resort to copying over a backup I created with Carbon Copy Cloner, which was done before I reinstalled the 2013-001 Security Update for Snow Leopard. But that’s a bit of a headache too, because my documents I’ve updated since the backup will be out of sync. Another reason this isn’t a great solution is that I can’t take advantage of the 2013-001 security update, nor future ones.
Any suggestions? There’s probably no good time for something like this to happen, but this is a particularly bad time – I’m currently beginning design and finished art freelancing and brushing up on some applications I haven’t used in years. Nor am I going to make an impression meeting with recruiters without my folio being presented from my MBP.
I’ve already booked a Genius appointment 2.5 days from now, but all help and ideas greatly appreciated!

However, the issue described by TS4088 is not a soldering problem. It is a Latent Defect -- a flaw built into certain batches of those chips from the day they were packaged and installed.
If your Mac fails the VST test used to detect this Latent Defect, re-flowing the solder is likely to have NO EFFECT on its performance -- the solution is the remove the defective chip and replace with a good one.
There certainly can be problems in these and other Macs where a re-flow would be beneficial. But I caution Readers not to generalize your solution to Macs that are known to fail VST. Re-flow alone will not solve the Latent Defect problem.
