Kernal Panic on Start Up

Hello
My Mac Pro (2008 model, running Leopard) will get as far as the Apple Logo/Spinning Clock screen and after 20 seconds gives me the "Restart your Mac" dialogue box.  I've tried resetting PRAM, removing power cables etc, safe mode, and also booting from the original install disc.  The install disc makes no difference - the Mac Pro hangs at exactly the same point.
Removing the power cable, I opened up the Mac Pro to have a look inside.  I'm not technical at all, so wasn't expecting to spot anything!  But after a few seconds I noticed a single red light flash once from the Memory Card / RAM area.  It actually made me jump as I wasn't expecting anything to flash with the power disconnected!  Anyway, I waited and waited to see if it flashed again, but it didn't - so not precisely sure what/where it flashed.
I'm booked to go to the Apple Store on Thursday morning, but if there are any simple solutions worth trying then any helped would be massively appreciated as it might help me get up and running sooner, plus it'll save me a fortune in taxi fares to/from the Apple Store!!
Thanks,
Caroline

Should just add... the initial problem was that the screen froze/glitched while one of the Mac screensavers was playing.  The screen then kept switching on and off.  I pressed the eject button to eject a CD and the eject icon appeared over the glitched screensaver image.  Then I rebooted etc.

  • Another G5 kernal panic on start-up post - but this one is different!

    Hello all,
So, I purchased my g5 used, but I've had it for about three years now with no problems. Within the last few months, however, my G5 kernal panics on start-up about 25% of the time. Also, it has been freezing on wake-from-sleep, at one point about 75% of the time, but now the wake-from-sleep issue is at about 15%.
In May or so I installed some new Crucial memory.
In October I replaced the start-up drive from what I assume is the OEM Maxtar with a Seagate 250gb 7200.10. I removed a media HD from the 2nd HD slot and copied (using Disk Utlility) the OEM Maxtar drive to the new Seagate drive. At some point, I had copied the system folders to my media HD for back-up. When I installed the new Seagate, the computer would often boot to the media HD, even after selecting the Seagate as my start-up drive. However, despite being confused on several occasions, it always started up and never had a kernal panic - also, I didn't reset the PRAM and SMU until recently, so that might have solved that problem.
Until I installed Leopard. After installing 10.5 when it debuted, I started having frequent kernal panics on start-up and these wake-from-sleep problems. Both were more frequent then they are now, and sometimes I can go a week without either of these problems occuring.
The kernel panic that I get on start-up reads something to the effect of "Cannot find driver for this unit (Powermac 7,3)." When it KPs on wake, it points to the "ATA driver."
I have reset the SMU, but I have not tried reseating the RAM. I have run the RAM diagnostic . . . although I have only had the patience to get through one iteration.
I have repaired permissions and verified the disk from the Leopard install DVD.
Any ideas? Is it the HD? I get the feeling that the HD is not powering up when it needs to to provide the computer with the OS on power-up and wake. Perhaps Tiger was able to deal with this and with for it to get going, or the move to Leopard happened so close to the wiping of the OS from the media HD that I didn't notice it. But the thing that kills me is that it does not happen all the time!
    Thanks!
    CMF

The optical drive? Isn't that odd? It's the OEM Superdrive, as far as I know. Maybe there is a firmware update for it I'm missing? Here's the stats:
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-117D
    Revision: B705
Also, I've included the KP data for the wake-from-sleep KPS:

  • Leopard and kernal panic after starting up external hard drive

    Hi,
After upgrading to Leopard, everytime I turn on my external hard drive after my Powerbook G4 starts up, I get a kernal panic and it says that I need to shutdown. So I do and when it restarts the disk is mounted fine with no problems. Why would it have a kernal panic? I don't need to access the external all the time so I don't need to have it on. What should I do?
    Thanks,
    Mary

    Hi,
The drive is connected via firewire through the back of my Apple Cinema Display firewire hub. Out of curiosity, when I disconnect the drive from the ACD hub and connect it directly to my Powerbook Firewire connection, I found that I did not get a kernel panic when I turn on the drive. It mounts without a problem. It may be the ACD firewire connection.
This is the panic log that I get.

  • Recurring kernal panic on start up screen.

The problem started after I downloaded the latest iTunes update and selected automatically restart after download. I have tried starting in safe mode and it just keeps the little grey spinning wheel on the white screen for ages. I have manually restarted it and turntable it off at the mains and left it for a while but nothing has helped.
I have a 27" iMac Intel 2009 (I think), it was part of the faulty batch that were recalled to have the hard drive replaced. Apple did replace the hard drive but after a while the odd kernal panic started to happen and now it won't even start up.
Am I missing a trick here? I feel like I have gone through the correct process of dealing with a kernal panic. Is there another way of dealing with this issue with out dragging it down to my local apple store?
    Many thanks,
    Max

Can you boot from your backup? (You have one, right?) Can you boot into the recovery partition? Can you boot from the original install disk? Do you have any utilities like Disk Warrior that come on a bootable CD?
In short, do you have anything other than the internal drive to boot from?

  • 13 inch mid 09 MBP will not boot in safe mode or os disc. originally kernal panic but now blank screen. is this logic board? no liquid damage.

I upgraded the ram and hdd a while back(RAM first with no issues, then hdd around 2 months later). The computer started freezing a few days after the hdd upgrade.
I reformatted the hdd and it worked fine for a few weeks then same freezing issue. Instead of wiping the drive again I repaired the disc and this had it fixed for about a month. I was booting in safe mode for a few days with no issue and went about uninstalling 3rd party apps. Then the Kernal panic issue started, When I inserted the OS cd the screen went blank and has not come back on after repeated boots.
Can we put this down to logic board and if so can it be repaired rather than replaced?
    Thanks

    thanks for the reply,
just reinstalled the factory RAM and HDD. Same issue of blank screen. At the moment i have no way of connecting to external monitor.
The OS cd is still in drive and i can hear the drive spinning for a few seconds at the start but it stops after about 20 seconds.

  • Kernal panics black and white text as well as regular KP screen

Bought a used Powerbook Alum 15" 1.5 mhz. Almost continually having kernal panics. Started out being just the regular ones, and could not trace it to anything special, so after DW said there were problems with the HD, installed a new one. Helped for a while, but they began again. Tried to do software update tonight and it kept killing and having KP. It's gotten so that a restart gives me a black screen and nothing else. Complete stall. After 4 or 5 tries, finally got a boot to finish. BTW, always got the processor bong, but nothing else. On a java update tonight, got the we are hanging KP. then another, which I copied in full.
KP tonight was all white text on black background, as follows. Sorry if I missed some caps:

    Melinda

Probably I can't be of too much help since I can't read panic logs, but here is an article on resolving kernel panics in general:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Have you tried reseating your RAM? I have heard that RAM can be a factor in kp's.
    Good luck!

  • Received kernal panic AppleACIPlatform running OSX 10.9.1

On my MacBook Pro.  Came back from vacation to find kernal panic upon start-up.  Happens repeatedly (won't boot up in safe or normal mode).  Have tried restoring the hard-drive, restoring permissions (both of which said "restored fine" but problem remained), recovering from Time Machine (says recovered ok, but still cannot boot), and reinstalling OS-X (would not successfully reinstall).  Am attaching picture of kernal panic.  Have not recently installed any software.
Any ideas?  I'm suspecting a hardware issue.
    Thank you.

  • Mac Pro kernal panics

I have a Mac Pro (2.66 Quad Core) with 4 x 2GB here that is intermittently kernal panicing.
The kernal panics occur within around 8-12 hours with no applications running, however running the CPU at max. I haven't tested for an extended amount of time without the CPU running high as of yet.
OS has been freshly installed and all updates performed.
I was mostly wondering whether anything can be determined from the kernal panic logs:

From the kernel panic type, and the log, it appears to be RAM related.
Try pulling the RAM from the #1 and/or #3 slot of Riser A

  • Continuing Kernal Panic, Mac Store Clueless

I brought my 1.25 Dual G4 (MMD) to the local Mac Store because it had started having repeating Kernal Panics. The machine would run for 1-2 hours and then Kernal Panic. At times, the machine would even Kernal Panic at start up. I even tried starting off the 10.3.9 disk and it Kernal Panic'ed. In short order, I had no access to my machine, or even any way to save my info off my drives.
I am the guy that other people bring thier Mac to when it's broken. I have every program/tool needed to work on a mac. So if I couldn't find the issue, I surmized no one else could, and I may have been right.
I brought my G4 to the Mac Store. They were able to repeat the Kernal Panic, and were unable to get my machine up, even trying to fire it up off of an external HD. The Mac store changed my CPU ( $600.00+ due to my applecare expiring). That didn't do it. I took it home and it did start up, so I backed up onto a Firewire drive - BUT, one hour after backing up - KERNAL PANIC!
Mac Store Trip #2, they replaced my mother board (Logic board for mac users) and my processor again (free). 1 hour later KERNAL PANIC!!
Mac Store Trip #3 - they claim the figured out that a 3rd party HD I installed was causing the Kernal Panic. I took out the hardrive, bought a brand new one, reinstalled everything, 1 hour after I finished installing 10.4.7 BOOM KERNAL PANIC!
The apple store was clueless the whole time, and did about $2000.00 worth of repairs and labor for about 6 days costing me $600.00 and gas money. I really don't care, as long as my box works.
I have found that my fan doesn't seem to "speed up" anymore as it once did, and the inside of the box seems unusally hot. I just intalled 2 extra fans, and 2 hours later KERNAL PANIC.
I know the issue is not the HD. I know the issue isn't the video/3D card (I have 2 cards, and swaping them, both occur).
I have a 2096 SCSI card from adaptec with the driver installed that I have used for 3 years...dunno if it can be that.
I have a Aurora Fuse Igniter video card, with currently no driver installed. I'm gonna take that out, but that has been in the machine for 3 years as well, with no issues.
I can guess that MAYBE one of my ram chips has gone bad. I will try taking out all but the original ram and running the machine.
Any other ideas? Anytime the processor has to work hard for about an hour, the machine Kernal Panics. I have to admit, at least now it starts up - whereas before it wasn't even doing that - so the Mac Store did do something. Now the symtoms have just changed.
I am considering installing a 3rd fan that is attached to the HD case and pointed on a slight angle into the giant heat sink of the processor. The heat sink is right next to the HD, and seems to get unusally hot.
    I have Geforc4MX card currently installed, and I own a 9800Radion Pro.
This box was my workhorse. I have owned about 9 macs, and I have never had real issues like this. Ususally my HD's would just die. I cannot figure out what the heck is wrong with it, despite 10 years of fixing my macs, friends macs, and family's macs.
The Kernal panic messages weren't even being saved, thats how bad the panic was. The few times I saw it, it said "CPU 01" but since the CPU has been changed twice now, I assume its not that.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.

This may or may not help. I have experienced kernel panics periodically, daily, since I bought my 1.42 dual. I usually know how to fix things, but i am not certified. I understand heat, so I run a large fan- a real ordinary box fan- right next to my computer blowing past it. This does not strain the internal power supply further. i have the box maxed, two optical drives, 128 radeon 9800 card, 4 drives, no pci fans internally, unless you count the onboard video card fan. I don't leave my firewire drives attached- just on and off for transfers- and I was determined this week to get the problem (of 2 years plus, now), solved. I have been kernel panic free for slightly over a day, so I don't know if this is appropriate yet, but it seems that my original 1 GB of ram from the apple build was the problem. I did notice that those sticks were much hotter than my additional ramjet sticks this last week when I went to unseat and reseat them, so I just took them out as a test. I think formerly I just removed my additional ram as a test. I am looking around at the sticks to try and figure out if one duo was ecc and one was not.... but as I understand it, all that would do would be to remove the ecc function on the duo that was ecc... I do not remember buying non-ecc ram. If my machine continues to be stable, I intend to just buy a little more ram identical to the sticks that are working now. I've lost work and had continual challenges because of this problem, and it does not seem to be because of the ram I added, at all, but the ram from apple that I started off with. I have had this problem since the day i turned on the machine, I have read about so many other people suffering with it, and heat and firewire disks and power supply were the culprits always suggested to me. Does anyone have a site to suggest that helps one identify ram sticks with an image? Has anyone ever seen information from Apple that admits to this problem in these machines? They weren't continued that long with the move to the G5.

  • Kernal Panics.... hardware tests check out OK

This has been an on again off again problem with my early 2008 24" iMac.  Several times now I've had to reinstall the OS.  It came with Leopard and I tried installing SL, but gave up about a year ago as not matter what I (or the Apple Genius's [yeah, right]) tried, we could not get SL to install.  They even replaced the harddrive, logic board and several other internal components.
Now, yesterday I installed Lion to an external hard drive and then migrated everything from my MacBook (which is running Lion) to the iMac.  It took approximately 8 hourst to erase the hard drive, install Lion and then Migrate.  I then left my iMac on overnight... no problem.  Now, today, I started working (nothing that should consume major resources... just checking eMail, checking out the new features in Lion, etc.) and suddenly, the Kernal panics have started again.
I previously had VMware installed on this iMac, but it should be gone (right?) now that I've zero'd out the HD and installed Lion.
The following is the report that was submitted to Apple after I reboot the computer.  Does anybody see anything in this 'report' that could provide some insight into what might be going on?  I'm going to try and delete some 3rd party software and see if that helps, but the MacBook has all the same programs and has no issues....

I should clarify... I installed Lion to the EXHD and then did a recovery onto my iMac then migrated.  I did so AFTER zero'ing out the HD and setting up a single GUID partition.

  • Macbook pro has had many kernal panics now won't even start

I've read the phrases kernal panic and failing gpu. I stating getting these a few months back. They have been happening in clusters. Now after closing the book it won't start at all and it feels hot. Its gotten hop in the past when apparently it kept going after I closed it but this is the first time it won't start up again for about a half hour now after I opened it up.
This has a solid state drive so its not a disk problem.

That does not mean it can't be a SSD issue.

  • New Macbook Pro Retina continually re-starting when lid is closed - Kernal Panic included

    Hello,
I called 800-MYAPPLE for tech support but they were not able to help me at all, hoping someone here can help.  My new MacBook Pro Retina has been continually re-starting when the lid is closed.  It does not happen every time, may 20% of the time.  I am running Windows 8 on Boot Camp if that piece of information is important.  Here is the latest kernal panic from the log:

  • Start up kernal panic???

I have my MDD G4 set to start up before I get up so I'm ready to start working. This morning I came into my office and the monitor was gray with a white square, about 1x1 inches, in the middle. Inside the white square was a blue representation of the earth. Is this a kernal panic? I tried restarting and came back with the same white square.
I restarted using my cloned external HD and repaired permissions on my internal startup drive. One permission was repaired, sorry can't remember the exact name, and it started with library/.... . Restarted using my internal HD and everything now operates normally.
Can one bad permission really cause this or is there possibly going on I should be worried about?
    Thanks,
    Doug

Dougles, that doesn't sound like a kernel panic.

  • New MBP: Kernal Panic on 2nd start-up

No third-party apps have been installed on this thing yet. Opened it up, went through registration process, software update and the subsequent restart. closed the machine after browsing the web for 5 min. This morning, instead of waking up, I get the start-up tone followed by black screen. After a force shutdown/restart, it freezes. On the next attempt to restart, it starts up but gives the message below. Is this a sign of a dud machine or should I not be worried? Any advice on preventing future occurances of this?

Hi, I'm having a similar problem, I have had my macbook pro since late jan, not long after getting it back home to the uk as I bought it in the us I started having kernal panics, spoke to the apple care team they told me to archive and install and check permissions to no avail, spoke to them again to day and the guy just said to re-install os x, don't really want to be doing that as I don't feel it will make any difference, have been reading on a few discussions and thought i would see if you could help, it seems tp happen when I am using skype or Ichat, I've been in contact with skype and they advised me to reinstall but there shouldn't have been a problem anyway and is not something that they have had reported, since re-installing there seems to be no problems but this was only this afternoon, I'm running os x with all the latest updates, and have no unusual third party software could someone please take a look at my panic log and see if they can help, thanks : )
