Kernal Panic (possible related to vram)
Hi.
Hope someone can help me with this - the last couple of days my PB 12" 1.5ghz has been acting up - giving me the ghosted screen with "please restart" in 4 languages aka kernel panics.
First i ran the hardware test and it came up with a Vram error "2NYD / 2 / 4: 2122" - anyone know what this means ?
The panic log shows the following :
Wed Dec 20 15:41:25 2006

Anyone got any ideas on what is wrong ? And how to fix it ?
All your kernel panic log entries point to Airport. Could be a bad Airport card, a card that isn't properly seated or installed, or a problem with the installed Airport software. Nothing in the panic logs mention or point to VRAM.
If AHT reported an error then you will need to take the computer to an Apple service center for diagnosis and possible repair.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Kernal panic, possibly Bluetooth related?
I keep getting this kernal panic when my Macbook wakes from sleep. It always happens when I first wake it, and before the panic the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar is X'd out. Any idea what the problem might be, before I make the trip to the Apple Store?

Kernal Panic - Video related?
Hey everybody, I am running OSX 10.7.5 on my MB404LL Macbook. I've only owned the machine for a few weeks but I am getting a kernal panic once or twice a week when I open the computer from sleep. I ran the thorough Apple hardware test (took about an hour) which returned no errors. I have even ran a fresh install of Lion last week to see if the issue was from a previous time machine restore. Here's the crash log which mentions the graphics card driver:

Kernal panic (graphics related?) and laptop death
After 5.5 years, I had my first kernal panic this morning. My powerbook G4 12" now seems to only startup if an external monitor is connected to it. The "status indicator" light on the lid release on the front does not light up when the laptop is running, but does pulse when it is put into sleep mode. I was getting a kernal panic every time I removed the second display, but it finally kept working this time.
Anyone have any suggestions? Should I try to dig out my OS install disks? Kernal panic logic pasted below:

DapWelcome to the Apple discussions.
I would get out the original OS X disks that came with the system, and run the Apple hardware test. Kernel panics are usually, but not always, caused by hardware, with memory the leading cause. -
Possible to Retrieve AddressBook after Kernal Panic
My husband's G4 PowerBook has been experiencing occasional kernal panics (will leave that to another discussion area). Two days ago he discovered all of his AddressBook entries are missing when he synced his iPhone. He doesn't remember the last time he opened AddressBook from his laptop itself.
Couple of questions - is there a way to restore his AddressBook contents? Tried to restore from a backup, but only gained 6 entries (out of 100 or so).
I would like to restore the AddressBook before I tackle the kernal panic issue. Although he's just itching for me to crash his old 15" Powerbook so he has an excuse to go to the Apple Store for a shiny new 27" iMac.Tried that, didn't help much, a few more contacts appeared. Problem is, have no idea when they actually disappeared.
I do believe they're gone now.
It may be possible to recover some erased ones, but you must quit using the Computer immediately, because the OS will think it can write to those freed blocks on the disk.
Either boot this one in Target mode...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
And recovering from another Mac, or booting this Mac from another HDD, then using Data Rescue II...
http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
(Has a Free Demo to see if it could or not, but you'll need another drive to recover to).
If not going that route then...
I'd do AJ first, then DW. -
Kernal panic preventing shut down after Mountain Lion upgrade
Following upgrade to Mountain Lion, kernal panics are stopping shut down of my Mac from the apple menu. I have a late-2009 Mac Mini. OS X closes as normal but then restarts with message "Your computer restarted because of a problem". I have performed disk verfication, repaired permissions, reset VRAM and SMC. Booting from original hardware disc allows a normal shut down, so I suspect this is software related (probably Mountain Lion?). Kernal panic report from Console is below.
Reading this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4135480?start=30&tstart=0 suggests problems with nvidia cards and Mountain Lion. My Mac Mini has the original nvidia card it shipped with (9600M) and if I disconnect the display just before shut down it (usually) seems to shut down normally so might be display related?
Other than the problem with shutting down everything is working normally. First instance of this problem was immediately after installing Mountain Lion. I am currently considering a full-reinstall of Mountain Lion from the recovery partition and using Time Machine to retrieve my settings etc, although I am concerned this will not work if it is a genuine bug.
Any assistance or solutions gratefully received!

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Hello hotdavesweet,
It sounds like you have exactly the same problem as I have - nothing connected except the TV, permissions repaired, PRAM reset, etc.
Are you using Mountain Lion?? I had to downgrade to Lion to solve it. Unfortunately, a very similar problem occurs with the latest version of Lion (10.7.5). I'm sure that something with the latest updates is causing problems on certain Macs. I've filed a bug report with Apple so it may help if you do the same.
It could be a problem with using Samsung LCD TVs as monitors. Or maybe a graphics card issue - the user in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4316892?start=15&tstart=0 noted that a similar problem on a 2009 Mac Pro was caused by their (nvidia) graphics card driver.
Either way, I think it is something that Apple should address, even if it is only affecting a few users. Apple's mantra used to be that everything just works, but now I cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion with my setup (despite my Mac being easily capable of running it) and nor can I upgrade to Lion 10.7.5. It doesn't work as it should. -
Have had a kernal panic issue with this machine since it was purchased. Apple has replaced the motherboard, HD, graphics card and display, run every hardware test imaginable, but the panics persist. Panics are now they are down to once or twice a week. The screen randomly either freezes or goes dark and requires powering off and restarting. A real pain to my productivity! Running OSX 10.8.2 with no periferals connected. Here is the latest panic report from this morning.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Uninstall or disable LogMeIn. Might also see if there's an update.
For this possible culprit kernel extension, it is not necessary to completely uninstall the parent program.
(Note: disabling a kext this way may not always work as it may refuse to cooperate, but this is usually effective. The worst that will happen is you'll get a message saying it won't work.)
You can temporarily uninstall any .kext, which may be causing the problem, by doing the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste
sudo kextunload
Important, leave a space after kextunload
Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.
This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.
sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/
Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.
This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.
Other than that, have a look at this article on resolving kernel panics. Faulty RAM is a frequent cause.

Trying to find source of Macbook Pro Retina kernal panics (system report in post)
My Macbook Pro Retina running Mountain Lion has at least one kernal panic a day. Sometimes the wallpaper resets to default. It only happens while it's asleep and I have only ever once caught it on the error screen (meaning it's not happening as I wake it up but rather while the screen is off). I have had my computer and this problem for a while so I finally tried taking it to Apple to resolve the problem. It's been confirmed twice not to be a hardware problem and I have had the entire logic board replaced.
All other threads seem to say the problem is bluetooth but I never use bluetooth and it is always off. I DID do a full system reset and the problem went away but restoring the computer from time machine brought it back after a couple days. Is there any way of figuring out what software is causing the problem? Is there a way to use time machine to migrate applications and files to a reset computer instead of doing a full system recover and would that possibly fix the problem?
I would like to avoid updating to the newest OS if possible for reasons.
Here is the system report:

Can anyone decipher my kernal panic report?
I'm having them 2 to 3 times per day. In my limited research, I know it can be related to memory and I am in the process of pulling out pair by pair to isolate which one may be causing it, but no luck as of yet. Or is it related to something in the operating system. Below is the kernal panic report.

com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver 1.0.0
This looks a lot like like an Error Correction Code (ECC) memory error. The Mac Pro store additional check bits with each word in mmeory, and corrects single-bit errors on the fly. Uncorrectable errors cause a kernel panic.
The status is also updated in About this Mac > ( More Info ) > Memory...
The status will change to something other than "OK" and possibly to a count. -
Kernal panics after installing AIRPORT EXTREME PCI 54M WIFI CARD
hi all - after reading around the forums - i bought this off ebay
AIRPORT EXTREME PCI 54M WIFI CARD /APPLE POWERMAC G3&G4
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=37 0157697386#ht1341wt892
but when i boot up i all i get is the screen of death - kernal panic - and need to reboot to another kernal panic
i have tried it in slots 2-5 and the result is the same - i have now taken it out and the machine boots fine.
I am keen to use it as a media streamer for appletv - have i bought the wrong card or is there something i can try/do?
as always - thanks in advance
darren, lockerbie, ukHi-
I would consider the problem to possibly be incompatibility with Leopard.
The seller states 10.2/10.3/10.4 "and above", but does this include 10.5x? Leopard is not specifically mentioned. "And above" could mean up to 10.4.11.......
If you have a drive with OS 10.4x on it, try booting to that volume with the card.
If it works, then it's an OS incompatibility.
If it doesn't, then the card is the problem.
Biggest problem, is it looks like some generic brand. Not knowing the maker really makes trouble shooting difficult.
Is is a Broadcom chipset?
While generic Broadcom chipset cards worked well up through 10.4.11, Leopard seems to have "broken" that generic support that was previously enjoyed, for at least some of those chips. Seems to be an "era" related thing......
If the chipset is Atheros, the previously successful Orangeware driver also doesn't work in Leopard. -
IPhoto causes kernal panic after a few minutes.
Hello!
I've recently discovered that having iPhoto open for more than a few minutes causes my entire computer to kernal panic and I have to restart. Sometimes my iphoto libraries are unrecoverable and I have to create new ones. Any help on fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated!Hi, James. Before trying to blow out the machine, did you release the keyboiad latches and flip the keyboard back onto the wrist rests to expose some of the Powerbook's interior? And did you then replace the keyboard, turn the machine over, remove the bottom pan and blow out the fully exposed underside too? If you didn't open things up this way, even a really powerful air jet couldn't have done much good at all.
If you didn't, and you want to try it now, instructions are here:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide
There are three different Tibook series and some differences among them, but the keyboard and bottom pan removal instructions are the same for all. Be sure to use the right screwdriver for the bottom-pan screws — it really is required. You'll strip the very soft heads of the screws if you don't.
While you have the hood up, so to speak, it would be a good idea to tighten every screw you can see inside the machine, top and bottom. Many of the screws in Tibooks have a habit of loosening with time and handling, and that can lead to a huge variety of strange problems. It's possible that a loose screw is directly responsible for your PB's flaky behavior. Tightening them up also makes your PB's chassis more rigid, and thus less prone to its internal connections working loose — another thing that often happens in Tibooks.
I agree that it sounds as though your problem is heat-related. But the Powerbook isn't actually overheating: if it were, it would be going to sleep instead of KPing. More likely there is some connection or microscopically-cracked solder joint making or breaking when it shouldn't as the machine heats up and parts expand and move.

Sudden Kernal Panics with Production Server
I was called in today because a departmental supervisor had to manually restart their production server today and the application that ran on it didn't restart properly. After some looking and then another controlled restart to get the application going again, the server kernal paniced. From actualy examination, it appears this is what happened the first time.
As the server is in production mode, I've not taken any steps with Dr. Smoke's troubleshooting list, but I have pulled the panic.log and I'm posting it here. If someone has any clue where I should start, that would be helpful!

PowerBook G4 17 Mac OS X (10.3.9) 1.5G RAMHi, L.
The panic cited, i.e.
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x000E7FF4): vnode_put(1d95210): iocount < 1</tt>
implies something is amiss either with affected Mac's hard drive directory (potentially affecting either file information or virtual memory swap files) or your RAM. Processor or programming errors are also possible, but I'd say less likely.
A vnode is defined here as "An in-memory data structure containing information about a file."
The particular message sited in the panic comes from the vfs_subr.c component of the operating system, concerned with "External virtual filesystem routines."
I suggest you troubleshoot this off-hours using my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ, as you noted. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
If you look at this Google search you'll find some similar reports that find issues with hard drive files, RAM, bad NIC, and related things that the troubleshooting steps in my FAQ would help you isolate. However, follow my FAQ step-by-step rather than skipping around as it's designed to find high-probability / low-effort causes up front.
Good luck!

Hello
I have a MacBook Pro 17" (not unibody) with the GeForce 8600GT graphic card. The last two days my computer has had strange errors. The screen starts flashing, and the computer freezes. The only thing to do is to power off. When I started the computer again I got the Kernal Panic during startup. I've done a hardware test, and it found no error. Changed the harddrive with a new OS - same error. Reset the "cmdalt+PR", same error. I then took out the Airport card, and then it worked perfectly.
The next day the same problem came back (even without a Airport wifi card). Restarted the computer, and got the Kernal Panic during bootup. I reset the "cmdalt+PR", and then it worked.
What is wrong with the computer? I don't think it is the usual nVidia error with the 8600GT card.

It occurs, as I understand it, because of heat stress generated by the GPU on its connection with the motherboard, and is accordingly potentially "progressive" rather than "there" or "not there" (Some companies, I gather , have been making a living by simply reflowing the connections between the GPU and the motherboard accordingly when people have not been able to obtain service under the extended repair program.)
So the fact that you "tested" for the NVIdia problem in the past doesn't mean that you might not be suffering it now.
My own experience of the NVidia issue involved blank screens rather than KPs, but I gather it can be manifested in a variety of ways (which makes sense given its nature). Given your log results I don't think you should discount the possibility that this is the cause of your problem. I'd get it tested again.
Have you tried running the basic Apple Hardware test using your original OS DVD set yet? Might throw up other possibilities. As BB suggests, from the description it is likely to be hardware related, I think.
Cheers

Mini DVI to DVI monitor Kernal Panic
I have a 20" iMac Intel Core Duo, mini DVI to DVI-D adapter, cable, and Princeton 17" DVI-D monitor. When I hook up the monitor to the iMac I immediately receive a Kernal Panic. If I restart, it also results in a Kernal Panic. It does not matter if the monitor is on or off. No monitor, no Kernal Panic. The monitor does work with a VGA adapter on a mini mac and on a G4 PowerBook. I don't have a mini DVI to VGA adapter for the iMac, so have not tried that yet. But I'd much rather have it work with DVI. Any suggestions?
did you try running a repair disk, to see if it is software related?? you could also try pram reset. (apple-option-p-r at start up, and hold til you get two sets of chimes). you could also unplug power from power supply at back of mac mini and plug it back in after a few minutes. if none of these things worked, i would contact the manufacturer of the monitor.

Windowserver crashes and kernal panics from iPhoto in Mountain Lion
I am using a Mid2010 MBP 15inch i7. I have just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. Currently whenever I try to open iPhoto my MBP completely crashes and reboots woith each report stating a windowserver crash or occasionaly a kernal panic. I was having similar problems in Lion when with windowserver crashes when switching between windows or scrolling in Numbers or switching to iPhoto from other apps. I upgraded to ML because I was told this may fix the issue. Now i can't keen open iPhoto. I have Pram restarted and iPhoto opens but as soon as an image is selected I have another window server crash. Pre ML install I did a clean install of Lion and it made no difference.
Posted below is a copy of my last error report. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully no one here told you that. A common theme is people blaming all problem on Lion or Mountain Lion, whatever operating system was just released and telling people with obvious hardware problems that they need to wait for a "bug fix". Updates come and updates go - taking warranties with them - but no fix ever happens.
There is a small possibility that the "Soundflower" kernel extension is giving you problems. It is very unusual to see a kernel panic without Soundflower being listed. If you remove that and still have panics, then it is definitely a hardware problem.
