Kernal Panic upon Boot from Server OSX 10.4 Install DVD Disk
I'm getting Kernal Panic upon booting from Server OSX 10.4 Install DVD Disk.
I wanted to statup from the install DVD to do a repair permissions and repair disk and i'm getting a kernal panic screen. Anyone know why?
Using a Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC G5, OSX 10.4.10, working fine.
Will no longer boot from dvd disk, not even install cds.
Tried other macs same deal, I can't belive that both sets of disks went bad.
Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.10) 2 GB SDRAM
Hi moeminator-
You can start the server in FireWire target disk mode and use the drive in the Power Mac to do the deed.

Kernal Panic upon waking from sleep
Has anyone had an issue with kernal panics upon opening the macbook pro after it has been sleeping for a bit. It seems to happen when the computer is closed and I open it and it has been unplugged and then plugged in right when the computer is turned on it kernal panics, below is the entire error log, not sure if this will help anyone help me find a solution to this very annoying problem! Any help would be appreciated and I am curious if others have this issue. I am hoping that it is something that I can fix though..
Thanks!

It seems as if I have the computer closed for an extended period of time, I would get an immediate kernel panic when I opened up the computer. So far, according to my panic.log, i have had 9 such crashes.
I did a reset of the PMU, disabled hibernatemode and none of that solved the problem. I'll try reinstalling everything (next week after I get my new external HD) and see if that solves the problem. Maybe this is caused by a hardware flaw? It just recently started to happen, and when I first got my MBP, this type of crash didn't happen. Other than that, my computer has been perfectly stable. Here's a sample of my panic.log

Kernal panic when booting from tiger disk
My friend just called me with a computer issue. She just got a used computer and it had a password setup. i told her how you can boot from the tiger install disk and reset it. She put the disk in and started holding down C before she turned it on. It sits there and thinks for a while and then she gets a kernal panic with the prohibitory sign before it gets anywhere (to the install screen). I have no idea what to tell her and she's 3 hours away so I can't really go over there easily.
Could the fact that she started holding down C before she turned it on make a difference?
Any help is appreciated. The correct procedure for booting from the DVD is:
Start the computer and immediately after hearing the chime press and hold down the "C" key with one hand while inserting the DVD into the optical drive quickly with the other. Continue holding the "C" key down until the computer starts up from the DVD.
If the computer is already turned on, then insert the DVD into the optical drive. Restart the computer and immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the computer starts up from the DVD.
If the computer continues to panic despite the above procedure, then there's likely a major hardware problem. -
Kernal Panic when booting from AC Tech Tool disc
Okay, here's one to stump y'all:
I have talked to Apple Support, brought the machine to the best service center (Springboard Media in Philly) and no solution yet. Here's what happens:
Whenever I try to boot up from the Tech Tools Deluxe disc that came with my Apple Care Plan, Tech Tools Pro or Disk Warrior, the G5 panics about two seconds after I get to the grey apple screen. This happens every time. Now the interesting thing is that this did not happen when Springboard tried the same thing. Could this be a hardware issue that just wasn't found? I was assured that Springboard ran extensive hardware and software tests and came up with nothing.
I am at a loss. When I called Apple about this initially, the dude I spoke with decided that it must have been the media and promptly sent me a replacement Tech Tools Deluxe disc. Of course this did nothing. I am hoping someone on the forums will have some insight on this...
Cheers,
Matt
MDD Dual 867 | G5 Quad 2.5 Mac OS X (10.4.8) Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout, Maker's Mark bourbon and a whole lotta RAMHi- Thanks for the comments.
Yes, non-Apple RAM is installed. I had faulty RAM and found it and it was replaced by a very reputable third party company. I should have mentioned all the steps I have gone through (prior to bringing it into Springboard):
First noticed something was wrong when the machine was just shutting off w/o warning (ie like I pulled the plug). This happened a few times over the first two months of owning the machine, but seemed to progress (the G5 is only 4 months old). So that's when I initially tried booting from the TTD and TTP discs, to no avail. Then I went on to Apple Hardware test, which I could boot to fine w/o any problems. Ran the test in Loop Mode. The test would pass the everything up to the memory and then the machine would shut down. This happened quite a few times, so I know it wasn't a fluke. Finally got the AH test to confirm that one of my 2GB DIMMs was shot. That's when I sent it back, and continued testing with the stock 512MB (ugh) with no problems. However, even with the stock 512 in the machine failed to boot from TTD or TTP or DiskWarrior. Which made me think it was the optical drive. (And consequently when I started thinking this was above my head.)
So called Apple, and we reset the PRAM, the NVRAM, unplugged the machine for two minutes etc. Standard reading from a script Tier One. All to no avail.
Got the RAM back from the 3rd party (OWC), called them to confirm that the RAM I had sent back was faulty and that they had personally tested the DIMMs they sent back to me, which they confirmed had passed AH test. I then installed the 4GB, ran AH again - no problems. But, the booting from a CD/DVD problem still persisted.
I really doubt whether it is the OWC RAM at this point, as I successfully tested it, as did Springboard. I must reiterate that Springboard had no problems booting from TTD, TTP, etc.
I wish I could get a good photo of the KP when I boot from the TTD, cos the system profiler doesn't record it in the logs.
I think this covers pretty much everything I have done so far... I look forward to your responses.
And thanks for the luck!

Stop sign during boot, panic when boot from cd
Figured out my monitor problem; it seems to work now; however another problem appeared.
When I try booting up normally, the Apple logo appears for a brief second and then is replaced by a 'stop' sign (circle w/ line across).
I already tried reseting the nv-ram, pram, already tried booting in every single mode possible; tried booting from the 10.4 Tiger install cd - however after about 3 seconds of it reading the disk, I get a "We are hanging here..." panic.
My boot volume is a extended RAID - two 30gb hard drives, plus another 40gb HD by itself. It worked perfectly before. None of the data is backed up; and I really need to recover it asap.See Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts

You are getting a kernal panic, which is usually caused by a hardware problem. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?

I need help resolving a kernal panic in OS X Server on a MacPro. I disconnected all of my peripherals and restarted in hopes that it would clear with no luck. Now I am not sure what to do next. I have the original install disc but of course cannot get it into the computer. Apple support is closed. Any help will be appreciated.
As an update, I did everything it said to do in the Apple publication including zapping my PRAM with no results.

Kernel panic when booting from CD
Hi all,
I've just tried to boot from a CD on my relatively new (4 months old) - i think this is the first time i have needed to boot off a CD.
My Panther CD boots as far as the apple logo, then it looks like a few pixels in the centre of the screen get jumbled around - and the computer does not load any further.
If I boot off a DiskWarrior CD (latest version 3.03) I get a black Darwin screen with lots of text and a Kernel Panic "we are hanging here" error, as well as a small box saying that I need to hold down the power button.
My hard disk boots OK - but I am wanting to boot from CD to repair a couple of disk errors that the drive has.
Any ideas? Faulty CD drive?
KimIf you system is only 4 months old you very likely need a version of the OS on CD that is newer than what you are using. I had a problem with my 1.5GHz PB 17" a while back (just before Tiger came out) and I tried to boot it from a Panther 10.3.0 retail CD and it started okay then bombed - and I thought it was the somethign serious - turns out that I should have used the CD that came with it originally which had verison 10.3.3 or so - then everything was okay.

Kernel panic when booting from Tiger install DVD
Short version: When I try to boot up from the Tiger installation DVD, my Power Mac G5 gives me a kernel panic. Can anyone help?
Here's the story:
I have a Power Mac G5 that I've been running Leopard on for quite some time now. Unfortunately, the software I need to use (Final Cut Studio 1) has some incompatibilities with Leopard, so I was thinking I would put Tiger back on the machine in a separate partition on the second hard drive.
I tried booting the Power Mac using the retail (black label) Tiger DVD and holding down the "C" key. The Apple logo appears on screen, but is immediately followed by a kernel panic. I'm never able to access the features on the disc. The same thing happens if I try holding down "option" during boot instead: I'm correctly allowed to choose whether to boot from the hard drive or the DVD, but once I choose the DVD, I get the Apple logo and then a kernel panic.
The same Tiger DVD works fine on other computers, so I know it's not the disc. And the Power Mac itself handles everything else without problem.
I'm kind of desperate, as I need to finish this project this week. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated![Apple docs: What's a kernel panic? (Mac OS X)|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227]

How can i install snow leopard on my mac G5 using a command line and booting from an external usb rom, since my disk i have is not a bootable media
Hi.
You simply can't. Snow Leopard is compiled in Intel binary only.
Good Luck. -
Hard drive is missing. I can boot from the cd but when running the disk utility, no hard drive shows up.
This is a problem that suddenly appeared. Please post a screenshot of Disk Utility that shows what you mean. Be careful not to include any private information.

Kernal panic/wont boot :
Hello All,
I am experiencing a Kernal Panic problem out of nowhere.
The panic message comes up immediately when I turn the computer on and will not go past the message. It just gives my a panic code and then promps me to turn the computer off.
The computer will boot up fine in Safe Boot though. While in Safe Boot, I have repaired permissions in Disk Utility, as well as cancelled all programs that load at Boot Up.
My system is a Macbook Pro (Sandy Rose model) running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6), In not running any 3rd party external connections. Only thing i have pluged to the MBP is the power cable.
I do have the log of the panic message/crash if anyone can decipher what it says and what I can do to resolve this it would be of great help!
Thanks:

Apple has a 90 day warranty on all repairs. If you are having the exact same issue that was previously repaired by Apple AND have the repair paperwork or your case number, you should call Customer Relations and tell them your predicament.
I don't have the disc that originally came with the Mac unfortunately.
Why not? You need them to troubleshoot. Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html -
Kernal Panics when booting Install DVD on new MacBook Pro
First off, let me say that I know that Apple does not officially support OS X Server on their portable machines.
With that out of the way, I have been trying to install Server (the Universal Edition, of course) on the new Santa Rosa MBP that I got last weekend. The Installer DVD will kernal panic when trying to start up the machine. So I took it to my job, where we have a Mac Mini with a Core Solo processor. The Install DVD for 10.4 server boots the mini up just fine. So I put the MBP into target disk mode, and installed server on a partion I had made on the internet MBP disk when I first got it. So the installer has 10.4.7 on it, which I thought might be causing the problem. So with the Mini booted off the MBP partion, I updated the Server install to 10.4.10 and all the other updates. I then restarted the MBP, held down the option key, selected the server partion to boot up from, and the machine still kernal paniced while still booting up (It never gets past the gray Apple Screen with the spinning wheel.
Now I had hoped that the firmware update released today might help with the problem, but when I try to run that installer, it says that the firmware is not needed on my laptop. So I guess they had already installed it at the factory, even though it was not yet publicly availible.
I have looked at the kernal panic logs on the non server version of 10.4 that the machine boots after the kernal panic (when I boot back into server, using the Mini as the boot machine, there is no kernal panic logs), and I have always found the same thing, it looks like something to do with the video driver is causng the problem. The first item that is always in the backtrace is:
com.apple.NVDAResman(4.5.6)@0x500c4000
So I guess I am just wondering if anyone else out there, with a new SR MBP, has has similar problems trying to run server on their new machines? The method you must use is outlined here:

Best of luck. -
Kernal panic, Safe Booting
I have an old Macbook Pro with a Snow Leopard operating system and a battery on its last legs - I keep it plugged in all the time.
Yesterday, and again today, I got the Kernal panic screen. I tried resetting the PRAM to no avail, and finally got the computer to start up again by doing a Safe Boot twice.
In the first Safe Boot (both times) the kernal panic screen I got upon restarting changed from one with purple and blue vertical lines behind the 4-language-message to a gray screen with the kernal panic message, and in the second Safe Boot (both times), the computer successfully started up. Yesterday, I rebooted the machine after the second successful Safe Boot and it started up normally and worked fine until the next kernal panic.
I know that I probably need to reinstall the operating system, but can someone help me understand where the problem is in my machine? Is this what you needed?

I get kernel paic upon boot. I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion. What about memory? Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory? I have 8 G of upgraded RAM. (20 inch iMac core 2 duo)
If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode. -
Indigo iMac 500 Panics when booted from a Firewire drive
Hi all,
I have an iMac 500 Indigo and am trying to upgrade i to osx as other in this computer lab. I have been provided with a FireWire drive with a bootup of Tiger and a Panther disk image. Out of 32 computers here only three have ceaced to work. They are all the same 384 MB of RAM I have tried to a restore in FW Target Disk mode with no luck I am now trying to copy the files via classic probibly in vain. So back to the error, I see the computer in the UNIX bootup stage for a few (the grey apple with the progress indicator.) and then I get a Panic written directly to the screen over top of the graphic indicator as seen on older versions of OSX (10.0 10.01 or so)
Thanks
SeanThe firmware update is a good suggestion to check.
Here's another thing. You say you have been "provided with" an external firewire drive with Tiger on it. How was that Tiger OS installed on that firewire drive? If it was done on a computer that is not identical to your iMac, then it very well will not be able to boot your iMac. When you install Tiger or Panther or any version of Mac OS X, what is actually installed is a custom version of OS X that is tailored to the specific model of computer you are running at the time. So if the firewire drive has a Mac OS X that was installed, say from a G5, then that drive MIGHT only be able to properly boot that model of G5. It MIGHT be able to boot a G4 or a G3, but I think the odds are against that.
The reliable way to install OS X is from an OS X CD that is the commercially sold boxed version (not the installation CD that comes with a specific model of Macintosh, and not a firewire drive that has OS X from some other model of Macintosh).
