Kernal panic while using iTunes.???? gulp....!

Ok aloha I was running along smoothly in iTunes after I moved all my music from my iTunes library from my powerbook and in the middle of a song about 5 to 10 mins after this the system crashed to a Kernal panic screen. I cannot start up when I restart or when I insert start up disk. Called Apple and they sent me to the nearest repair shop. Before I go is there any way this isnt hardware, and if not hardware then software problem is my expense!!! Yikes Thank myself I backed up prior. ANY guesses as what this must me?
ALoha Reid

Frequently, you can't boot off the installer disk because you tried the 'C' key for startup, when in fact the Option (also known as the Alt key) key works better. Also make sure no additional peripherals are connected when you try this. See if that works first. Here's an article on the Option key startup:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
Make sure only to use the disk that came with the computer that installs the operating system or a newer retail operating system disk as this article explains:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
If you can, repair the directory as my FAQ explains:
http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
If you can't, well, you may have a hardware problem. If your machine is under a year old, you might want to purchase AppleCare so that this and future repairs to damage you couldn't have caused will all be covered under both hardware and software causes for another 2 years.

  • Kernal panics while using DVI output to watch DVDs

Hello all. I just got a new MacBook and LOVE it. The only problem is that when I use it to watch a DVD on my HDTV via DVI out and insert a dvd, I get the message that I need to manually restart my computer. This is the fresh factory installed copy of Leopard. When the computer restarts with the DVD in it, everything works perfectly. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks guys!

I just plugged in the MiniDVI/HDMI adapter cable and I got a really flickery TV, does this suggest graphics card issues? If so how to I run a diagnostics test on Mavericks if I don't have the boot DVD? Thanks!

  • Is there a way to select a specific playback device while using itunes 11 on Windows 7?

Is there a way to select a specific playback device while using itunes 11 on Windows 7? I was trying to select a device, is there such an option in itunes as there is in VLC player and Windows Media Player. If not, any idea when this feature will becoem available? Thanks!

iTunes supports multiple Airplay devices that can be selected.  If the device does not support Airplay then the manufacture of the device would need to support it for iTunes.

  • CD-RW drive disappears from entire system while using iTunes

I just installed a new CD-RW drive (master), removed all old CD burning software, and have installed the latest version of iTunes. I'm able to use the software without issues, Install CD's and Burn CD's, but after about 4-6 installs or burns my CD-RW drive disappears! iTunes will no longer recognize the drive and the drive no longer appears in My Computer or elsewhere.
I've tried physically reinstalling the drive and I've performed the steps in Microsoft Support Article ID 320553 repeatedly: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320553
After following those steps and reinstalling iTunes each time, everything appears normal and I can use iTunes for about 4-6 burns/installs and then the same issue happens again.
Note, for what it's worth, I have an old CD-RW drive also installed, but as a slave that I do not use with iTunes or for anything else. It just exists.
Is this leaning toward an iTunes problem or a burner drive problem? I don't know where else to look.

Well the issue happened again. Below is the DVD/CD Diagnostics. I then closed iTunes. I opened Device Manager and saw no ?'s or error messages. The D drive was missing again so this time I just tried the option "Scan for hardware changes" and it easily found the D drive and added it to the Device Manager. I then reopened iTunes and burned a CD with no problems. The plot thickens. Any clues?

    Hi,
    Yikes!
    You said :::
After some time of having my mac off line and unplugged (about a year & 1/2)
I got it back on line and running.
There could be a problem with you logic board or the LCD, but hmm
I wonder if perhaps resetting the PMU may help, I think it maybe worth a try.
Have the person helping you do that.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1712
    from the article above...
The PMU is a microcontroller chip that is present on the logic board in an iMac (Flat Panel). As the name implies, it's responsible for controlling all power functions for the computer such as power on/power off and some aspects of sleep/wake behaviors.
    * In rare occasions the settings in the Power Manager may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer. For example, your computer might not turn on, not wake from sleep, or do (or not do) other things.
Resetting the PMU is not intended to resolve issues in which your computer stops responding or applications unexpectedly quit. In general, you shouldn't have to reset the PMU except as a last resort in cases where a power management system hardware error is suspected. Performing a PMU reset returns the iMac hardware, including NVRAM, to default settings and forces the computer to shut down.
    Before resetting, try this first...
If you're experiencing issues with your iMac, for most situations, a restart is sufficient. If your computer has stopped responding, try these steps—in order—until the computer responds:
    Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)
    Restart (Control-Command-Power)
Force Shut Down (Press the power button for 10 seconds)
    Reset PRAM
You should only reset your computer's PMU if none of the steps above resolved your issue. If this is the case, see the instructions below to reset the PMU in your iMac (Flat Panel).
Important: Resetting the Power Manager on any iMac (Flat Panel) will permanently remove a RAM disk (if you are using Mac OS 9), if present, and all of its contents.
Resetting an iMac (Flat Panel) PMU
To perform a reset you will need a Phillips "0" screwdriver. The instructions in this article cover these iMac models:
Best of luck & please keep us posted!

  • Turn off laptop screen while using iTunes? Or best screen saver?

Is there a way to turn off the iBook display and still let the computer use iTunes? I can't find anything on this. If that isn't possible, what would be the best screen saver for actually saving the screen? If you know what I mean....

That does work--thank you. I wanted this solution for iTunes. This came to my attention when a friend of mine was using his MacBook to run a movie on a television, and he was complaining about the fact that the MacBook display could not be shut off while exporting the feed to the tv. You've answered my question, but I'm going to amend the topic to include shutting off screen while exporting a video feed--perhaps someone knows the answer to that. (I don't have anything to port a feed too, or I'd try it myself.) Thank you!

  • Kernal panic while re-installing OS

I recently bought a new MacPro and now I'm trying to get the old one ready for sale.
I removed the Boot Camp partition and then tried to erase everything on the hard drive using Disk Utility but it wouldn't let me do it.
I then tried to use the original Instal disk to do an erase and install but as soon as it started up I got the kernal panic screen.
Seeing as my old MacPro is a 2006 legacy MacPro but has been upgraded to Snow Leopard am I just creating problems by using my old install disk.

Thanks macbig, I read the article you linked to but couldn't find anything that lent it self to my problem.
I'm only getting the panic when I try to use my old original install disks to do a clean and install.
It could well be my updated video card but I was hoping I would not have to take it out and plug in the old one again.
I guess I will try the SL install disk and see if I can get something to work that way, at this point I have nothing to lose but time.
Like hatter recommended I did have a back up bootable disk for this computer but after I transferred every over to my new one I now use that as a backup to the new one.
I really wasn't worried about losing any data with the old one seeing as I would be fixing it up for sale and reinstalling the OS.

  • Imac spontaneously turning off while using iTunes?

Lately, every once in a while my iMac shuts itself down while inactively, listening to music from my library. Does anyone know what could be the course?

Specifically, I don't know the answer, but finding out the answer won't be hard.
We'll need a few specifics. You say your iMac shuts down while listening to music from your library. Is that the only time it happens? Is this when you're using iTunes, or some other application? What do you mean when your "iMac shuts itself down"? Does it shut down entirely, causing yout to reboot your computer? Could you describe exactly what happens before and after the "shut down"?

  • Macbook air 13" screen goes black while using iTunes

I have an early 2014 13" Macbook Air with a 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, and I'm using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. When I'm using iTunes, specifically when I'm watching a movie or TV show, the screen will randomly go black, but not like it turned off. The audio still works, but I can't see the cursor or anything. The only way I've been able to fix it is to completely turn it off (control+command+power) and turn it back on. It happens pretty often though, and as you can imagine, gets quite annoying. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks in advance.

  • Possible to control/block access to the internet while using itunes, etc?

Parental control. I would like to require a password for access to Safari, etc, to control computer privileges - while keeping itunes, Pages, iphoto, etc open. I want to listen to my playlist without opening internet access to the kids. It must be possible!

Hi jarileys, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Did you set up Managed Accounts in System Preferences>Accounts for them?

  • My playlists have not been trnasferred to my iphone while using iTunes Match

They have completely disappeared.  I had been using ITunes Match on my iPhone and it was working fine, but I noticed the new things I had bought or CDs I had ripped weren't showing.  So I turned match off and turned it back on and that's when I lost my playlists.  Where are they?  All the music is showing except the playlists.  How do I get them back???

Wicked annoying but I actually uninstalled iTunes on my Mac using an AppZapper. You can also get AppCleaner which is free. After I just went to apple.com/itunes and redownloaded iTunes. My music and playlists were still there, then I turned on iTunes Match and turned it on my iPhone once the upload finished. Try it!
NOTHING else worked! This was the only way I could jumpstart iTunes Match to actually give me my playlists. PLEASE backup your Library first. Nothing bad should happen, but don't take any chances. Good luck!

  • Constant kernel panics while using iPhoto 11

I'm hopeful that someone can help me sort this out....it's getting very frustrating. It doesn't "just work"....not anymore.
First off, I'm using an early 2009 (unibody) 17" MBP, 2.93 GHz, fully loaded (for this model) with 8GB RAM, 750 GB HDD with plenty of room left, running the latest Mountain Lion and iPhoto versions/updates. Everything is stock - I haven't done anything funky hardware or software wise, except add more RAM and a bigger HDD, which I did well over a year ago.
I've been trying to do a large project in iPhoto 11 - manually selecting photos from my huge photo database into a specific album, from which I'll order a hard copy photo album book from Apple - at least that was the plan. Even if I'm ever allowed to get this done, I may wind up so frustrated with Apple that I go somewhere else...
So I'll be working along, listening to iTunes, with maybe Mail open in the background - really nothing else - and, wham, black screen. It doesn't even panic error message (grey screen) on me....it just quits. The song being listened to in iTunes stutters for a couple of seconds before it quits.
This happened to me 2 days ago, then earlier today, and again just now. The 2 earlier times left behind a kernel panic log file (both shown below), but this last one didn't even leave that. The computer reboots, tells me it suffered an unexpected shutdown, can it send the data to Apple (the 2 earlier episodes), etc. And of course, when I restart iPhoto it wants to verify my database. Each time I'm afraid it'll tell me the dbase got corrupted beyond repair by the unexpected shut down. So far I've been lucky enough not to have that happen.
After the first episode, I ran a disk check and permissions check from my recovery partition, then ran an extended AHT - all of these came up fine.
After the episode earlier today, I ran disk check from the recovery partition, rebooted into safe mode (I saw a blog where someone suggested that potentially corrective diagnostics were ran when booting into safe mode), then rebooted into AHT and looped it (the routine check, not the extended check) 11 times - all of these tests were again negative. On a hunch, I changed my battery-saving video mode (System Preferences / Energy Saver ...) to "high performance" to see if using the stronger video card would make a difference. No such luck.
This time I rebooted into safe mode (from the same blog I read before - a guy with a similar problem said that in his case it hadn't happened to him again while in SM). My iPhoto dbase is still being "checked" as I write this, so I have no idea yet if running in SM will allow me to work uninterrupted.
This ONLY happens while I'm running iPhoto, and in each of the 3 cases, was actively using the app. I've had no kernel panics outside of using iPhoto.
And, the last 2 kernel panics (which left logs behind), showed all com.apple kexts except for a single one associated with AirParrot. Since I never use AirParrot, I uninstalled it using their supplied uninstaller. I then followed up with Find Any File to make sure all AirParrot traces were gone, which they were. So, even with the one 3rd party kext gone, this problem happened again, just now.
I don't think it's hardware - a lot of AHT negative testing doesn't support that. There isn't any 3rd party junk swimming around. That leaves Apple software. And if I'm reading the crash logs correctly, it all has something to do with the graphics system. But that's about as far as my knowledge can take me. Searching the net for similar experiences has landed with with many references to similar experiences - but none matching mine, really. A lot of calls for hardware replacements, trips to the genius bar, etc. But again, my case doesn't seem hardware.
Sorry for the long description - it doesn't seem like a straightforward problem.
Very grateful for any helpful advice I can get - I've got to get this project done.
    Thanks!

As I had mentioned, I had removed AirParrot in its entirety, and that followed the two panics which generated the logs I showed. The third panic, which prompted me to post here, generated no log, and AirParrot was gone by that time.
As it so happens, the thing had a fourth panic - log shown below. AirParrot is clearly gone.
It is an iPhoto problem - what else could it possibly be? iPhoto is the only thing (and I use my computer quite a bit) that incites it, and repeated AHT's have failed to show anything.
I'm just hopeful that someone has experienced this and knows a solution, or that Apple is watching, and would like to fix their software.
Failing that, I'll have to let Apple have my money for nothing, and will need to look for another photo manager, and I'm happy to take suggestions in that area as well.
    Thank you!
