Kernal Panic with OS 10.4.6 install

Repeated attempts to install OS 10.4.6 over 10.2.8 each time resulted in kernal panic. Despite restarting from outboard Firewire HD and using Disk Repair to correct permissions and repair the Macintosh HD, no joy followed. TechTool Deluxe 3.0.3 reported no HD problems. Taking the CPU to the MAC Store resulted in a successful install by the technician who repaired permissions and severe directory damage. Happily, I reconnected all previous cables at home, started up the MAC, and immediately noted the return of kernal panic or, finally, the MAC Blue Screen of Death. Disconnecting the SCSI cable (connected to Adaptec SCSI Card 2906) from an Iomega Zip Drive resolved the problem. I should have known that the SCSI device could be the cause of this problem, but I missed seeing the other reports in the Installation & Setup section when searching the terms “kernal panic.”
Entering “SCSI” as a search term does produce numerous messages regarding incompatibility problems, such as this long chain, “No luck getting Adaptec 2906 SCSI card to work.”

J.Michael:
Kernel panics are usually hardware based. If you have recently installed RAM or a peripheral your problem may be related to that piece of hardware.
Check out Dr. Smoke's Resolving Kernel Panics and see if there are any clues for you in it.
Good luck.

  • Kernal panic with install disk

    Hello.
I've successfully used my SL install disk to launch Utilities on my G5 and switch Firmware Password on, so I know that the DVD is OK - it's the Apple original. When I try on my MBP, the boot repeatedly stalls on the gray Apple screen then gives me a kernal panic message to switch off. The install disk mounts OK when I've booted from the HD but won't restart from the disk. They are both running SL 10.6.7 with everything up to date. The MBP works fine in every other respect but I can't set a firmware password on it.
    Thanks.

Sorry, did I get the name of my Mac wrong?

  • Kernal panic with software install and restore disc

I'm trying to access my software install and restore disc for my powerbook G4 running tiger. Everytime I restart the computer with the disc in, and hold down c, I get a kernal panic. There is nothing wrong with the software install and restore disc, as far as I can tell.
    Thanks for any help!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

is this a tiger disk or a previous operating system? if it is a previous os restore disk, then it is not surprising it would panic. the only software restore disks you would need would be ones to run the apple hardware test and to install or reinstall os 9. otherwise, you should not use a software restore disk for a previous operating system, unless you have erased and installed your drive. • Kernal panic with OS X update

Hi all, I have a kernal panic on my MBP and have tried several things to fix it without success.
I was updating to OS X 10.5.8 via download, and after I restarted my computer as instructed, the computer shut down at approx 75% of installation. Since then I have been getting the kernal panic message with every restart. The issue continues even in Safe Mode.
The kernal panic is as follows:
panic(cpu 0 caller0x001AC125): Version mismatch between Kernel and CPU PM"!/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1228.15.4/osfmk/i386.pmCPU.c:651
    Debugger called: <panic>
    further down it says:
    Mac OS version:
    Not yet set
1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM (installed after market, but several years ago)
available: 6.51 GB total: 74.21 GB
    Bus speed: 667 MHz
I tried to Archive and re-install OS X but don't have enough available memory. I can't erase and re-install at this point unless I absolutely have to.
I'm at a loss as to what to do at this point. Any help would be great.

This can be caused by having a dysfunctional system prior to updating. The usual solution is to reinstall OS X. If you haven't enough disk space to do an Archive and Install, then you have the added problem of not having sufficient free space for OS X. I would suggest you get an external hard drive on which you can backup your files. Get a larger hard drive for your omputer or look for ways to store more of your personal data on an external drive in order to free up space on the hard drive. Then erase the hard drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Kernal panic occurs, even AFTER erase and install

Help! Just erased hard drive on my iBook G4 and I'm still getting a kernal panic!
I used the OS 10.4.3 install disk that came with the computer. After restarting I went to Software Update and got the "gray screen of death."
I don't think this is a hardware issue since the kernal panics started on one of my other Macs (an old eMac) at about the same time. Too much of a coincidence for it to be hardware-related.

Can you post some of your crash logs? Might be a clue. See Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Kernal Panic with Airport every few minutes

For a few weeks now my MacBook Pro began to have kernal panics once every 3 or 4 days. These kernal panics always happened at home and almost never at work. At work I am always plugged into Ethernet and at home I connect via an Airport Snow base station - 802.11b. So I have read a few post talking about the same exact issue as mine. Last night I got to the point where my MBP had a kernal panic every minutes and eventualy started to get the kernal panics durning the apple boot screen (Grey apple logo on darker gray back round).
So I booted into Safe Boot and then repaired permissions. I was able to do a normal boot after that however I did kernal panic over and over every few minutes. So I decided to upgrade from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8. Before I did this I trashed my airport prefs and ran another repair on my disk permissions. The upgrade went well. I noticed that my boot time is about 30 seconds longer and about 15 degrees cooler - Based on Core Duo Temp .
After work I turned on my MBP to test the airport and within about 20 seconds of sitting idle and not a single appliction open I got a Kernal panic...
Is there somthing anyone can suggest. Something I haven't tried or maybe a work around until the issue is address in the next release of Mac OS X.
I will post some of my panic log below which only goes back 5 days. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. My next step is to call Apple but I thought this forum would be faster.

No updates available for this machine, so I'm not sure what to do. Panic never occurs at home, only at work. And only after moving to a new office. The big difference is that I many more WLANs at the new location. Perhaps its the amount of them, or one specific that the AirPort cannot handle properly. Waiting for apple patch ....

  • Sudden Kernal Panics with Production Server

I was called in today because a departmental supervisor had to manually restart their production server today and the application that ran on it didn't restart properly. After some looking and then another controlled restart to get the application going again, the server kernal paniced. From actualy examination, it appears this is what happened the first time.
As the server is in production mode, I've not taken any steps with Dr. Smoke's troubleshooting list, but I have pulled the panic.log and I'm posting it here. If someone has any clue where I should start, that would be helpful!

Could this be a processor flaking out? I'm sure I'll have to do this after hours, so any head start I can get would be greatly appreciated!
    PowerBook G4 17   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.5G RAM

    Hi, L.
    The panic cited, i.e.
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x000E7FF4): vnode_put(1d95210): iocount < 1</tt>
implies something is amiss either with affected Mac's hard drive directory (potentially affecting either file information or virtual memory swap files) or your RAM. Processor or programming errors are also possible, but I'd say less likely.
A vnode is defined here as "An in-memory data structure containing information about a file."
The particular message sited in the panic comes from the vfs_subr.c component of the operating system, concerned with "External virtual filesystem routines."
I suggest you troubleshoot this off-hours using my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ, as you noted. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
If you look at this Google search you'll find some similar reports that find issues with hard drive files, RAM, bad NIC, and related things that the troubleshooting steps in my FAQ would help you isolate. However, follow my FAQ step-by-step rather than skipping around as it's designed to find high-probability / low-effort causes up front.
    Good luck!
    Dr. Smoke

  • Kernal panic with hotmail use

EVERYTIME I open my hotmail account through safari OR firefox within 1 minute a kernal panic occurs and I am forced to restart my computer. We have had this computer for about 4 years and never had this problem. I don't understand how this can be a hardware problem because it only involves one website...so far. Anyway to determine or fix this problem?
    We run a MAC OS X 10.4.11
    I have run all updates.

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.

  • Kernal Panic with Mountain Lion

    Hello everyone,
During these past few days I have been having the so called 'kernal panics' on my 2010 mbp i7. From reading other threads, I can tell you that its definitely not the Nvidia GPU that is not functioning, as I bootcamp and use the very same GPU to play my window games. I am now going to paste you the log report of the latest panic. The panic before this panic was almost 2 days, so I thought the issue is fixed and it comes back. I do note that the log seems to be shorter than usual.

It all started with iTunes being empty all of a sudden. And when I tried to import the old playlist, iTunes [9.2] crashed. Did this a few times when something started nagging in the back of my head. So:
    1 - I made a backup.
2 - PRAM startup wich gave me a black Darwin screen with a few lines like this:
    hfs_swap_BTNode: record #1 invalid offset (0x4050).......
3 - started up in Target modes on my MacBook
4 - Did a Disk Utility repair which failed [keys out of order]
5 - DiskWarrior gave me while writing the replacement directory [ error code (2351, -36)] 3 times, the 4th time it went ok and rebuild the disk
6 - tried starting up and it gave me a black screen again with a bunch of lines and the last line saying:
    waiting for remote debugger connection
7 - I did another round of PRAM restarts and gave me another black screen with the ultimate line:
    Panic: We are hanging here...
8 - So I took the Tiger installer disks and ran a Hardware Test. Which it passed succesfully.
9 - Then I zoroed the HD with the Disk Utility on the installer DVD
10 - Tried to install a clean install of Tiger but it failed giving me:
There were problems installing the software
    Any ideas?

    Let me suggest you try:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. (May be the Installer menu on Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to APM then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Once the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the installation.
I would do a thorough cleaning of your Tiger installer disc beforehand.

  • Kernal Panics with Ok Hardwear Test

I've had 2 kernel panics so far, I knew they were kernel panics because the system froze and asked me to restart my computer in different languages.
The first I ran just the basic (short) apple hardware test and it came out with no problems. After the second kernel panic I did the extended apple hardware test, which also came out with no problems. So I ruled out a hardware problem from following this link (http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html).
Could this then be a software problem? And how can I test for that? Or any other issue? Any answers on this are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

So it looks to me that you have upgraded to Leopard? If this started to occur after the upgrade, well then there is your problem.
Try running disk permissions from disk utility, shot in the dark but may be worth a try.
If you did just do an upgrade you may try to do another install.
This may be redundant to the link you provided but here is Apples page on your problem:

  • Kernal Panics with CS2 and Bridge?

I have had the Mac Pro for two weeks.
This AM I sent it back to Apple for a new one.
From the day I took it out of the box I experienced
K.Panics. More so while in CS2 / Bridge.
Did an erase and install to no avail - ie. ruled
    out software.
Anyone else having these types of issues with
CS2 and Bridge? On another note - while doing
nothing the machine is reallllly quiet, however,
once I start working on it the drive make a
sound like a subtle static, frying rice, etc.
    Is this normal?
    Many thanks.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Have installed 3rd party RAM or any other internal devices?
As for your drive noises… this is normal.

  • Organizing your files while having a Kernal Panic

Right now my iBook has a Kernal Panic. My mom attempted to install the OS software keeping the data but it woudlnt' work so I have to do a clean install.
So I need to back it up.
But I can't get to finder without it freezing.
I attempted to use Disk Warrior witht he preview option and that partly worked but I can't transfer any files from a backup drive to my harddrive, but I can copy files from my hardrive to the backup drive.
    So strange.
Anyways does anyone know of something that allows you to organizine, and work somewhat like finder but it lets you move, organize, and do certain things so that I can backup my data so my mom can do a reinstall

    Midnight Pharaoh,
If you are still dealing with this problem, here is a thought:
If you have another Mac, a firewire cable and can boot the iBook in target disk mode, then you might be able to drag files from the iBook to the other Mac (for backup purposes). However, given that the iBook is having problems, we cannot really know if this will work unless you try. There are instructions at: How to use FireWire target disk mode.

  • Kernal panic when booting from tiger disk

My friend just called me with a computer issue. She just got a used computer and it had a password setup. i told her how you can boot from the tiger install disk and reset it. She put the disk in and started holding down C before she turned it on. It sits there and thinks for a while and then she gets a kernal panic with the prohibitory sign before it gets anywhere (to the install screen). I have no idea what to tell her and she's 3 hours away so I can't really go over there easily.
Could the fact that she started holding down C before she turned it on make a difference?
    Any help is appreciated.

The correct procedure for booting from the DVD is:
Start the computer and immediately after hearing the chime press and hold down the "C" key with one hand while inserting the DVD into the optical drive quickly with the other. Continue holding the "C" key down until the computer starts up from the DVD.
If the computer is already turned on, then insert the DVD into the optical drive. Restart the computer and immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the computer starts up from the DVD.
If the computer continues to panic despite the above procedure, then there's likely a major hardware problem.

  • Kernal panic caused from garageband

Hi guys this seems to be a recurring problem, im now on my 3rd 2011 macbook pro and about 10% of the time im on garage band it kernal panics .
I had headphones in and the blue snowball mic that the apple store gave me for free because they said it was compatible and caused no problems. I was in the middle of speeding up the bpm/tempo of my song and the boom it kernal panics...this is probly my 11th or 12th time getting this..and each time my computer seems to get significantly slower.
Please guys this is making my mac experience miserable..i have been on the phone with customer support for probably more than 10 hrs and they always blame it on one thing or another....Ive even had a kernal panic with nothing plugged in before. THIS NEEDS TO STOP.
So I would appreciate what ever advice you guys can give...thanks and here is the report
