Kernal panics, boot loops, freezing and overheating Macbook.

Within the last week, my Macbook has been acting strangely. Here's a list of what has been happening, intermittently:
Turning itself off a couple of times (as if I've pressed and held the power button)
When turning on, looping the startup bong until I force a shutdown.
Frozen a few of times for more than 15 minutes (until I force shutdown).
Running warmer more than normal (the vent is warm to the touch).
When it's not suffering from this, the computer seems to run at normal speeds, and I haven't noticed any other issues.
I ran a RAM diagnostic program to check 3rd party RAM and all seemed to be fine.
Would be great to pinpoint the problem. I'm a bit of a noob though! Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
General info:
Model ID: Macbook2,1 (White, 2007)
3rd party HDD (upgraded 12+ months ago, no issues)
3rd party RAM upgrade to 4GB (upgraded 3+ months ago, no issues)
OS X 10.5.8

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.

Freeze and beachball: Macbook pro mid 2010 2.66 sn W802... ; Boot ROM: MBP61.0057.B0C   SMC    1.58f16 in the last two days, desktop freezes on screen wake-up and sometimes when selecting other windows, mouse moves beachball, active window still works a bit. No changes no new software, reinstalled 10.6.8 plus supplemental, SMC etc. Seems to work most of the time until left idle. any ideas?

I'm glad it worked out for you.
Next time you could probably just reinstall the os ----> Might save some time.
I think reinitialising the drive with zero's is a little overkill ------> Normally you would do that only to prevent other people from recovering deleted data (say if you were selling your computer and wanted to delete your confidential information).

  • Kernal Panic Cost Me Money and No Cure

    Hi All
There is a history to this problem and so I will try and set it out so it is easy to read:
Macbook Pro Unibody Late 2008 and early 2009. 2.4 Ghz, 4 gig ram upgraeded from 2 gb in 2009 and woked fine since. Did have OSX 10.5.8
    1. For a few months in 2012 I had a problem where I kept getting a kernal panic on boot up BUT I lived with it as I could do a PRAM reset or remove battery and put back in and usuallly worked
    2. Late 2012 - problem becoming very frequent and so I run lots of diagnostics online hardware test and everything listed on previous posts......no obvious problem
    3. In December I decided to get an SSD and installed this however still getting intermitant problem afer initail success
    4. After I had tested without I added old hardrive to dvd bay and still intermitant problem but no chnge from when without adding old harddrive
    5. I took to a shop to sure it
    6. They said they could not find problem but then fixed the chip [suspicious as to what fixed I think they just installed lion] and installed Lion and working but that they had disabled the old drive and said my warranty would tun out if i reconnected - now I am confident that nothing to do with my old drive.
    7. I got it back after paying over £100 and looked like it was working at first.
    8. I reconnected mu old hard drive and still working no problem
    9. I installed live and still working ok
    10. I had bought a apple super drive for loading dvds etc and tried to connect - no success - but the guy at the shop said he had connected a dvd drive no problem
    11. After a bit oif reseach i discovered that apple in their wisdom disable apple super drvie from macbook pro that origianally had an internel dvd
    12. I opened up /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist and chaned to:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>Kernel Flags</key>
    <string>mbasd=1</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
basically add the mbasd=1 into the <string>
Now this worked fine but when I first tried to do it I struggled as there is no password set on my mac the guy at shop removed and so i had to add it - this caused a kernal panic at first but then it was ok again
    13. I loaded Logic Pro from my super drive
    14. Not work initially so download updates etc
    15. Logic works great
    16. At some point it sarted getting kernal panics again and getting as bad as before
    17. I disconnect my old har drive and still getting kernal problems
    18. Safe mode has worked a couple of times and once just hung with spinning thing
    19. I probably need to get my money back from the guy who tried to fix it but more importantly - I would prefer to get another 2 years out of this macbook pro rather than having to buy a new one or even switching windows etc...
I have so kernal paics below - if anyone could shed any light I would be very gratefull as I have spent far too much time and money on trying to rescue this macbook pro.

Do a search of this forum for "Problems with Seagate 750GB XT series drive". There is a long thread on users of 2009 MBPs that had many problems with that series drive Until they Replaced the drive cable. Other have posted to that thread with the exact model number of the Updated cable.
It can be found online at places like iFixit.com and maybe OWC, macsales.com.
Funny part about that thread is there was more then one user that kept sending the Seagate drives back to Seagate as defective, Many of them, over and over and that just can't happen. I always contended that it was not a drive problem but a Computer problem. After the original poster, and others that were having the same problems, replaced the cable they never had another problem.

  • Kernal panic with software install and restore disc

I'm trying to access my software install and restore disc for my powerbook G4 running tiger. Everytime I restart the computer with the disc in, and hold down c, I get a kernal panic. There is nothing wrong with the software install and restore disc, as far as I can tell.
    Thanks for any help!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

is this a tiger disk or a previous operating system? if it is a previous os restore disk, then it is not surprising it would panic. the only software restore disks you would need would be ones to run the apple hardware test and to install or reinstall os 9. otherwise, you should not use a software restore disk for a previous operating system, unless you have erased and installed your drive. • Kernal panic (graphics related?) and laptop death

After 5.5 years, I had my first kernal panic this morning. My powerbook G4 12" now seems to only startup if an external monitor is connected to it. The "status indicator" light on the lid release on the front does not light up when the laptop is running, but does pulse when it is put into sleep mode. I was getting a kernal panic every time I removed the second display, but it finally kept working this time.
Anyone have any suggestions? Should I try to dig out my OS install disks? Kernal panic logic pasted below:

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
I would get out the original OS X disks that came with the system, and run the Apple hardware test. Kernel panics are usually, but not always, caused by hardware, with memory the leading cause.

  • Safe Boot Mode Freeze and Mavericks and Core Storage

I was having a problem booting into Safe Mode on a new iMac. It froze and restarted continuously.
Eventually I was told by engineering (after the Senior Tech) that...
"It’s expected behavior from any disc formatted with core storage and that includes discs encrypted with File Vault, a Fusion drive, or any internal disc larger than 2.2 Terabytes."
They also went on to say...
"They are investigating and improving the performance for future releases of OSX Mavericks."
FYI to those reported to have these problems. Don't waste time with it...it won't work. I reinstalled a clean OS, the Apple Repair depot installed a clean OS and when I got it back, I reinstalled it again.
    It still doesn't work.
No reported fixes on the horizon at this time.
    FYI
    Dave

Not every iMac will have this problem, only the ones with the hardware as specified.
I think you should look around a little more on the net and you will find that there are others who have had this problem. Apple Tech also noted that they were aware of the problem.
One mitigating factor is that many Mac users have no idea what Safe Mode is anyway so they'd never notice it. My own iMac runs just fine, no probs and I calculated that I must had this problem for over 6 months until I stumbled on it. If I hadn't I'd still be using it and it might have gotten fixed by an update, in which case, I would have never known that I even had it to begin with. If you own an iMac that has not been formatted for disk spanning, then you won't have this problem either. All my other Macs run Mavericks and I have no problem with any of them.
I don't believe that there are that many people out there who actually own iMacs with 3 TB drives combined with a Fusion drive, sorry. We'll have to agree to disagree here. There are multiple factors at work here.

    Hi,

profile/about this mac, so maybe that piece of RAM is
    the problem.
If you're sure it's supposed to be a 512MB card, it's a good bet that's your problem. You should try running the Apple Hardware Test from your original installation discs. Run the extended test if you don't get an error on the short one.
You can also try reseating and swapping the RAM around. Or just remove one stick and see how it runs.

  • Another G5 kernal panic on start-up post - but this one is different!

    Hello all,
So, I purchased my g5 used, but I've had it for about three years now with no problems. Within the last few months, however, my G5 kernal panics on start-up about 25% of the time. Also, it has been freezing on wake-from-sleep, at one point about 75% of the time, but now the wake-from-sleep issue is at about 15%.
In May or so I installed some new Crucial memory.
In October I replaced the start-up drive from what I assume is the OEM Maxtar with a Seagate 250gb 7200.10. I removed a media HD from the 2nd HD slot and copied (using Disk Utlility) the OEM Maxtar drive to the new Seagate drive. At some point, I had copied the system folders to my media HD for back-up. When I installed the new Seagate, the computer would often boot to the media HD, even after selecting the Seagate as my start-up drive. However, despite being confused on several occasions, it always started up and never had a kernal panic - also, I didn't reset the PRAM and SMU until recently, so that might have solved that problem.
Until I installed Leopard. After installing 10.5 when it debuted, I started having frequent kernal panics on start-up and these wake-from-sleep problems. Both were more frequent then they are now, and sometimes I can go a week without either of these problems occuring.
The kernel panic that I get on start-up reads something to the effect of "Cannot find driver for this unit (Powermac 7,3)." When it KPs on wake, it points to the "ATA driver."
I have reset the SMU, but I have not tried reseating the RAM. I have run the RAM diagnostic . . . although I have only had the patience to get through one iteration.
I have repaired permissions and verified the disk from the Leopard install DVD.
Any ideas? Is it the HD? I get the feeling that the HD is not powering up when it needs to to provide the computer with the OS on power-up and wake. Perhaps Tiger was able to deal with this and with for it to get going, or the move to Leopard happened so close to the wiping of the OS from the media HD that I didn't notice it. But the thing that kills me is that it does not happen all the time!
    Thanks!
    CMF

The optical drive? Isn't that odd? It's the OEM Superdrive, as far as I know. Maybe there is a firmware update for it I'm missing? Here's the stats:

  • IMac Kernal Panicing CONSTANTLY

I bought my iMac August 2011. Between buying it and now, it has Kernal Paniced constantly despite having had a whole new hard drive, thousands of conversations and hours on the phone with Apple support to try various tests and now yet again I am taking it to an Apple recognised service and maintenance centre to have it looked at and ultimately all wiped AGAIN. It also loses wireless connection to the mouse and the keyboard, freezes, closes programmes down at its own will, doesnt come on sometimes, and now I have had it!
Anyone else had repeating Kernal Panics with their iMAC and if so, what did you do, did it resolve or did you get a new one altogether?

Without a kernel panic report to review, all I can suggest is for you to peruse
    About kernel panics,
Technical Note TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics,
Mac OS X Kernel Panic FAQ,
    Resolving Kernel Panics, and
Tutorial: Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panics for more details.

  • Recurring kernal panic on start up screen.

The problem started after I downloaded the latest iTunes update and selected automatically restart after download. I have tried starting in safe mode and it just keeps the little grey spinning wheel on the white screen for ages. I have manually restarted it and turntable it off at the mains and left it for a while but nothing has helped.
I have a 27" iMac Intel 2009 (I think), it was part of the faulty batch that were recalled to have the hard drive replaced. Apple did replace the hard drive but after a while the odd kernal panic started to happen and now it won't even start up.
Am I missing a trick here? I feel like I have gone through the correct process of dealing with a kernal panic. Is there another way of dealing with this issue with out dragging it down to my local apple store?
    Many thanks,
    Max

Can you boot from your backup? (You have one, right?) Can you boot into the recovery partition? Can you boot from the original install disk? Do you have any utilities like Disk Warrior that come on a bootable CD?
In short, do you have anything other than the internal drive to boot from?

  • First back up with TM....kernal panic

last night, i installed a laCie 500GB USB2 Ext. HD to use with time machine. i reformated the drive and went to bed. this morning i woke to my fans running to beat the band and the command lines of a kernal panic.
i restarted and then restarted time machine. it had to bake a 214gb back up and had about 30gb left.....don't know why so big, the files it was copying is only 140gb.....at any rate...when i tried to get it to finish the back up, it only moved an additional 30mb of data then seemed to stop.
I trashed the entire back up and started over. it has been running all day. When i stopped for dinner, it had 181gb done of the 215....then had another kernal panic. i restarted again and am back at it only backed up an additional 30mb of data...still has about 34gigs to go.
    what am i doing wrong?

  • My iPad is in a boot loop. Can't use itunes.

Today my iPad went into a boot loop. I don't know the cause as I wasn't in at the time but it's possible one of the kids tried to update or something, however I just don't know.
The screen blinks from the apple logo to the lockscreen and is totally unresponsive. The only time it is in any way responsive is immediately after a reset after which I can swipe to unlock, enter my pin, and see the home screen for about 1 second, then the boot loop begins and it is unresponsive.
I can't use itunes to restore. When I connect to iTunes it asks if I want to use the computer to manage the iPad (it's never asked me this before). After I click continue I get a message telling me to respond on the iPad. I can't because it's in a boot loop and unresponsive. Even if I try connecting to itunes after a reset I can only get as far as the homescreen, where I can see the option to "trust" my computer but cannot actually press it. Then the boot loop begins.
I've tried connecting to itunes while pressing the home button but that doesn't work either.
What other options do I have?

    Hi J_Constantine,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPad is restarting and not responding sporadically. You have already attempted some great troubleshooting steps and I think you are on the right track. Holding the home button is one step that you take while placing your device in recovery mode to restore. This is the method that I would suggest to restore. For complete information on how to place your device into recovery mode, please reference the attached article.

  • Kernal panic with OS X update

Hi all, I have a kernal panic on my MBP and have tried several things to fix it without success.
I was updating to OS X 10.5.8 via download, and after I restarted my computer as instructed, the computer shut down at approx 75% of installation. Since then I have been getting the kernal panic message with every restart. The issue continues even in Safe Mode.
The kernal panic is as follows:
panic(cpu 0 caller0x001AC125): Version mismatch between Kernel and CPU PM"!/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1228.15.4/osfmk/i386.pmCPU.c:651
    Debugger called: <panic>
    further down it says:
    Mac OS version:
    Not yet set
1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM (installed after market, but several years ago)
available: 6.51 GB total: 74.21 GB
    Bus speed: 667 MHz
I tried to Archive and re-install OS X but don't have enough available memory. I can't erase and re-install at this point unless I absolutely have to.
I'm at a loss as to what to do at this point. Any help would be great.

This can be caused by having a dysfunctional system prior to updating. The usual solution is to reinstall OS X. If you haven't enough disk space to do an Archive and Install, then you have the added problem of not having sufficient free space for OS X. I would suggest you get an external hard drive on which you can backup your files. Get a larger hard drive for your omputer or look for ways to store more of your personal data on an external drive in order to free up space on the hard drive. Then erase the hard drive and reinstall OS X.
