Kernal panics while using DVI output to watch DVDs

Hello all. I just got a new MacBook and LOVE it. The only problem is that when I use it to watch a DVD on my HDTV via DVI out and insert a dvd, I get the message that I need to manually restart my computer. This is the fresh factory installed copy of Leopard. When the computer restarts with the DVD in it, everything works perfectly. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks guys!

I just plugged in the MiniDVI/HDMI adapter cable and I got a really flickery TV, does this suggest graphics card issues? If so how to I run a diagnostics test on Mavericks if I don't have the boot DVD? Thanks!

  • Kernal panic while using iTunes.???? gulp....!

Ok aloha I was running along smoothly in iTunes after I moved all my music from my iTunes library from my powerbook and in the middle of a song about 5 to 10 mins after this the system crashed to a Kernal panic screen. I cannot start up when I restart or when I insert start up disk. Called Apple and they sent me to the nearest repair shop. Before I go is there any way this isnt hardware, and if not hardware then software problem is my expense!!! Yikes Thank myself I backed up prior. ANY guesses as what this must me?

Frequently, you can't boot off the installer disk because you tried the 'C' key for startup, when in fact the Option (also known as the Alt key) key works better. Also make sure no additional peripherals are connected when you try this. See if that works first. Here's an article on the Option key startup:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
Make sure only to use the disk that came with the computer that installs the operating system or a newer retail operating system disk as this article explains:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
If you can, repair the directory as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
If you can't, well, you may have a hardware problem. If your machine is under a year old, you might want to purchase AppleCare so that this and future repairs to damage you couldn't have caused will all be covered under both hardware and software causes for another 2 years.

  • Mavericks + Reboot/kernal panics when Mini DVI to DVI adapter plugged in to 2008 iMac

Hi, i'm encountering a problem with my brothers iMac from 2008. We are attempting to add a 2560x1440p external monitor. When I first plugged in the cable, along with the Mini DVI/DVI adapter, the computer reboot, went to the grey screen, and then said "Your computer restarted because of an error, press any key to reboot" type message, then does it again. I tried plugging in just the adapter, and got no kernal panic, so it's only when info/power is transmitted through the cable.
I googled it extensively but couldn't find any solution nor even a hint of a solutiion. I suspect it might be the graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2400), but I don't know. A few years ago we connected a 720p TV using a MiniDVi/HDMI adapter, and it worked, but the resolution sucked and it was more of an experiment.
I should add we installed Mavericks yesterday if it makes any difference. I also asked the seller and and he confirmed the adapter was a DVI-D, which is what the external monitor requires. Here is the Problem Report given after removal of adapter and reboot. Thanks for any help.

  • Kernal panic while updating apple software on my 10,3,9

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what my imac's problem is.
After some time of having my mac off line and unplugged (about a year & 1/2)
I got it back on line and running.
As I was on line the other day everything on the Safari window vanished but the bug image
    on the toolbar.
I had to restart with the power button because the mac froze, the mac started up,
but the screen remained black (with some sign of luminosity in an area not black as if off
I shut down again (w/ button) unplugged the mac waited 5 mins,
restarted and all proceeded as if normal.
I inserted Panthers Disc 1, did a restart holding the c key at chime using & did a repair disk in DU
    I got a Disk was okay ..
I ran software updates via the Updater these are the ones I did.

I did a restart using the power button as directed,
My screen panel came up Black again,
Powered off again, unplugged for 5 or so mins.
Plugged in, restart & the mac ran as expected again.
    I did repair permissions.

    Hi,
    Yikes!
    You said :::
After some time of having my mac off line and unplugged (about a year & 1/2)
I got it back on line and running.
There could be a problem with you logic board or the LCD, but hmm
I wonder if perhaps resetting the PMU may help, I think it maybe worth a try.
Have the person helping you do that.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1712
    from the article above...
The PMU is a microcontroller chip that is present on the logic board in an iMac (Flat Panel). As the name implies, it's responsible for controlling all power functions for the computer such as power on/power off and some aspects of sleep/wake behaviors.
    * In rare occasions the settings in the Power Manager may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer. For example, your computer might not turn on, not wake from sleep, or do (or not do) other things.
Resetting the PMU is not intended to resolve issues in which your computer stops responding or applications unexpectedly quit. In general, you shouldn't have to reset the PMU except as a last resort in cases where a power management system hardware error is suspected. Performing a PMU reset returns the iMac hardware, including NVRAM, to default settings and forces the computer to shut down.
    Before resetting, try this first...
If you're experiencing issues with your iMac, for most situations, a restart is sufficient. If your computer has stopped responding, try these steps—in order—until the computer responds:
    Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)
    Restart (Control-Command-Power)
Force Shut Down (Press the power button for 10 seconds)
    Reset PRAM
You should only reset your computer's PMU if none of the steps above resolved your issue. If this is the case, see the instructions below to reset the PMU in your iMac (Flat Panel).
Important: Resetting the Power Manager on any iMac (Flat Panel) will permanently remove a RAM disk (if you are using Mac OS 9), if present, and all of its contents.
Resetting an iMac (Flat Panel) PMU
To perform a reset you will need a Phillips "0" screwdriver. The instructions in this article cover these iMac models:
Best of luck & please keep us posted!

  • Kernal panic while re-installing OS

I recently bought a new MacPro and now I'm trying to get the old one ready for sale.
I removed the Boot Camp partition and then tried to erase everything on the hard drive using Disk Utility but it wouldn't let me do it.
I then tried to use the original Instal disk to do an erase and install but as soon as it started up I got the kernal panic screen.
Seeing as my old MacPro is a 2006 legacy MacPro but has been upgraded to Snow Leopard am I just creating problems by using my old install disk.

Thanks macbig, I read the article you linked to but couldn't find anything that lent it self to my problem.
I'm only getting the panic when I try to use my old original install disks to do a clean and install.
It could well be my updated video card but I was hoping I would not have to take it out and plug in the old one again.
I guess I will try the SL install disk and see if I can get something to work that way, at this point I have nothing to lose but time.
Like hatter recommended I did have a back up bootable disk for this computer but after I transferred every over to my new one I now use that as a backup to the new one.
I really wasn't worried about losing any data with the old one seeing as I would be fixing it up for sale and reinstalling the OS.

  • Kernal panic at C drive boot with OsX dvd

    Aloha
I have a problem with starting up with Install disk. I get kernal panic when I try and have to turn off the computer with on off button
    Any suggestions ????
    reid

Reid, Is the disc your using the original from your computer or a retail disc. If your trying one from another model computer it probably won't work. Just my first thought....

  • Constant kernel panics while using iPhoto 11

I'm hopeful that someone can help me sort this out....it's getting very frustrating. It doesn't "just work"....not anymore.
First off, I'm using an early 2009 (unibody) 17" MBP, 2.93 GHz, fully loaded (for this model) with 8GB RAM, 750 GB HDD with plenty of room left, running the latest Mountain Lion and iPhoto versions/updates. Everything is stock - I haven't done anything funky hardware or software wise, except add more RAM and a bigger HDD, which I did well over a year ago.
I've been trying to do a large project in iPhoto 11 - manually selecting photos from my huge photo database into a specific album, from which I'll order a hard copy photo album book from Apple - at least that was the plan. Even if I'm ever allowed to get this done, I may wind up so frustrated with Apple that I go somewhere else...
So I'll be working along, listening to iTunes, with maybe Mail open in the background - really nothing else - and, wham, black screen. It doesn't even panic error message (grey screen) on me....it just quits. The song being listened to in iTunes stutters for a couple of seconds before it quits.
This happened to me 2 days ago, then earlier today, and again just now. The 2 earlier times left behind a kernel panic log file (both shown below), but this last one didn't even leave that. The computer reboots, tells me it suffered an unexpected shutdown, can it send the data to Apple (the 2 earlier episodes), etc. And of course, when I restart iPhoto it wants to verify my database. Each time I'm afraid it'll tell me the dbase got corrupted beyond repair by the unexpected shut down. So far I've been lucky enough not to have that happen.
After the first episode, I ran a disk check and permissions check from my recovery partition, then ran an extended AHT - all of these came up fine.
After the episode earlier today, I ran disk check from the recovery partition, rebooted into safe mode (I saw a blog where someone suggested that potentially corrective diagnostics were ran when booting into safe mode), then rebooted into AHT and looped it (the routine check, not the extended check) 11 times - all of these tests were again negative. On a hunch, I changed my battery-saving video mode (System Preferences / Energy Saver ...) to "high performance" to see if using the stronger video card would make a difference. No such luck.
This time I rebooted into safe mode (from the same blog I read before - a guy with a similar problem said that in his case it hadn't happened to him again while in SM). My iPhoto dbase is still being "checked" as I write this, so I have no idea yet if running in SM will allow me to work uninterrupted.
This ONLY happens while I'm running iPhoto, and in each of the 3 cases, was actively using the app. I've had no kernel panics outside of using iPhoto.
And, the last 2 kernel panics (which left logs behind), showed all com.apple kexts except for a single one associated with AirParrot. Since I never use AirParrot, I uninstalled it using their supplied uninstaller. I then followed up with Find Any File to make sure all AirParrot traces were gone, which they were. So, even with the one 3rd party kext gone, this problem happened again, just now.
I don't think it's hardware - a lot of AHT negative testing doesn't support that. There isn't any 3rd party junk swimming around. That leaves Apple software. And if I'm reading the crash logs correctly, it all has something to do with the graphics system. But that's about as far as my knowledge can take me. Searching the net for similar experiences has landed with with many references to similar experiences - but none matching mine, really. A lot of calls for hardware replacements, trips to the genius bar, etc. But again, my case doesn't seem hardware.
Sorry for the long description - it doesn't seem like a straightforward problem.
Very grateful for any helpful advice I can get - I've got to get this project done.
    Thanks!

As I had mentioned, I had removed AirParrot in its entirety, and that followed the two panics which generated the logs I showed. The third panic, which prompted me to post here, generated no log, and AirParrot was gone by that time.
As it so happens, the thing had a fourth panic - log shown below. AirParrot is clearly gone.
It is an iPhoto problem - what else could it possibly be? iPhoto is the only thing (and I use my computer quite a bit) that incites it, and repeated AHT's have failed to show anything.
I'm just hopeful that someone has experienced this and knows a solution, or that Apple is watching, and would like to fix their software.
Failing that, I'll have to let Apple have my money for nothing, and will need to look for another photo manager, and I'm happy to take suggestions in that area as well.
    Thank you!

  • Buzz In Audio When Using DVI Output

I've had this problem for a while now, but everytime I plug in a monitor to the DVI port I get a horrible buzz out of my audio interface. I've tried everything: using different DVI cables and audio cables, using different audio interfaces, disconnecting everything except the necessary things, etc. and no matter what, the buzz comes when I plug something into the DVI port. I'm assuming that this has to do with the video card, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had problems like this.

Are the TV and the Mac plugged into different wall outlets in the room? It could be they are on widely different circuits, considering the wiring behind the wall, and that stray currents are flowing through the signal cables and upsetting the signals carried on those cables.
If the above is true, try plugging the TV into the same outlet as the Mac and see if things improve.

  • W500 audio noise while using audio output

    Hello,
Few months ago I've bought Lenovo W500. After some time realized that when I'm using an audio output in sometimes I can hear annoying noise. I've checked it with different headphones (also professional ones) and other audi equipment. Always the same.
In the beginning I've thought there are some problems with my Alsa configuration (I'm using mainly Linux) but havent time to check.
Now I've spent more time for that. I've couldn't find solution, decided to check on Windows also - there is the same problem (with exactly the same audio files/youtube videos etc.)
Checked with different quality audio files - mp3, flac, audio cd etc. Always the same.
I can hear it very good in this moovie:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaUL_7H7r40
first time noise appears at 00:02 - 00:03 and then I can hear it in almost whole time.
If I turn off all audio players etc. I can still hear annoing, quiet noise from headphones (on both OSes - Linux/Windows).
    Has anyone simmilar problem?
Any solution? My W500 is ofcourse under warranty but I need it at the moment very hard, so I hope there is some solution different than sending it to service :/
    Thanks a lot,
    Regards.

If you discard any software related problem, your problem is over hardware.
The only solution is sending to service and the will repair it for free. Maybe the will change the entire motherboard.
    Best regards.

  • Can bluetooth work while using lightning output?

Hi there. I have an ipod controller on my motorcycle for thumb control over volume and fast forward. this controls the stock stereo in the front fairing by the handlebars. It uses the lightning output on my ipod nano. I have the new nano with bluetooth.
I also have a trunk with another amp and speakers. My question for the community is, could I use a bluetooth reciever for the rear amp while the ipod is being controled by the thumb controller that plugs into the lightning output for the front amp?
does plugging into the lightning output turn off the bluetooth as it does the 1/8" jack output?
I tried plugging in the rear stereo with the 1/8" output but it doesn't work at same time as lightning output.
I hope the bluetooth works with the lightning output cause it would save me having to open the housing for the front amp and hardwiring it to the rear amp. I have the trunk on quick release and would like to take it off when I don't need it.
This could save me from buying a bluetooth reciever and having it not work. thanks for your time!

Hello? is there anybody in this community? Does apple monitor these questions cause I tried to contact apple with this question and all I get is bull $%*! automated phone systems. I even drove to the local apple store and asked this question and nobody could answere it. I even asked them to try to make a demo model do this to see if it works and while they didn't refuse to try they frustrated me so much with thier complete ineptetude that I left.! What the **** apple? I guess I'll just have to buy a bluetooth try it and then I'll let you know right here on this post. If it doesn't work I'll be sending apple a bill for my customer service I provided for their customers!

  • Kernel Panic while using Time Machine Backup / Time Capsule

    Hi there,
I'm using the new 2 GB Time Capsule for backupping my and my Girlfriends MacBook. When die Backup on my MacBook Pro early 2011 starts, the mass of files to write  increases with the already written. For exemple: 12,34 GB of 15,00 GB in in a few moments later 12,40 GB of 15,06. It ends with a Kernel Panic evertime. I realy don't know how to solve this problem. And by the way - on my Girlfriends MacBookAir 2012 is everthing fine with the Backup.
Is there someone who isable to help me?

I think this means you have a bad ram stick or bad area on the hard disk.
Do a verify of the hard disk.
    See A5 in pondini.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Use your original OS CD to do a hard ware test.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
It will have nothing to do with the TC..
This is purely a fault in the laptop. And so really you need to be checking in that area. The fact that TM triggers it is perhaps because it is trying to use a corrupted area of memory.
Did this just happen after you installed Maverick? If so I would say the install is corrupted.

  • Kernel Panics while using Safari

    Hi,
I have just received 2 days back my rMBP early 2015. From first day I installed my essential software (Microsoft Word, Papers App, Graphicconverter, Lightroom, 1Password, Dropbox app, Abbyy FineReader, Mplayer, Gemini, Firefox, Java and Flash Player) and I dont install pirated apps.
Since then I started getting Kernel Panics on random basis every time I browse the internet using either Safari or Firefox.
So I called AppleCare, everything seemed normal for them but they told me that i can return the MBP if the problem persist.
I had a feeling that the problem is related to Flash Player so I uninstalled it, and since that I have no Kernel Panics (since 10 hours)
Did anyone have similar problems? Do you think I should keep the device and continue with flash player?
    Here is my report:
    Problem description:
I keep getting Kernel Panics when browsing web

  • How can I use my iPad to watch DVDs in the gym?

How can I import a DVD into my Ipad so I can watch a movie while inthe gym?

Some DVDs and Blu-Ray movies come with a "digital copy" that allows you to download a copy of the movie for use on computers and portable devices. You might see if any of the DVDs you have come with such a feature. Walmart/Vudu also has a service that basically gives you a digital copy of a DVD you already own. See:

  • Kernal Panics when booting Install DVD on new MacBook Pro

First off, let me say that I know that Apple does not officially support OS X Server on their portable machines.
With that out of the way, I have been trying to install Server (the Universal Edition, of course) on the new Santa Rosa MBP that I got last weekend. The Installer DVD will kernal panic when trying to start up the machine. So I took it to my job, where we have a Mac Mini with a Core Solo processor. The Install DVD for 10.4 server boots the mini up just fine. So I put the MBP into target disk mode, and installed server on a partion I had made on the internet MBP disk when I first got it. So the installer has 10.4.7 on it, which I thought might be causing the problem. So with the Mini booted off the MBP partion, I updated the Server install to 10.4.10 and all the other updates. I then restarted the MBP, held down the option key, selected the server partion to boot up from, and the machine still kernal paniced while still booting up (It never gets past the gray Apple Screen with the spinning wheel.
Now I had hoped that the firmware update released today might help with the problem, but when I try to run that installer, it says that the firmware is not needed on my laptop. So I guess they had already installed it at the factory, even though it was not yet publicly availible.
I have looked at the kernal panic logs on the non server version of 10.4 that the machine boots after the kernal panic (when I boot back into server, using the Mini as the boot machine, there is no kernal panic logs), and I have always found the same thing, it looks like something to do with the video driver is causng the problem. The first item that is always in the backtrace is:
    com.apple.NVDAResman(4.5.6)@0x500c4000
So I guess I am just wondering if anyone else out there, with a new SR MBP, has has similar problems trying to run server on their new machines?

The method you must use is outlined here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302960
    Best of luck.

  • Kernal Panic after update to 10.4.6/Missing HD Space/Won't Startup from DVD

Sorry to lump three problems together, but they may all be related.
First - I was getting random Kernal Panics while at 10.4.5, so I attempted to update to 10.4.6. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting up. I got a screen full of Kernal Panic info. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.3, and that's where the system stands now. It's running fine.
Second - My computer suddenly announced that the startup drive was out of disk space. I looked and the window said 30g. I closed the window and opened it again only to see it at zero k. I dumped some items to get some disk space, but now I can't get my 30g back.
Third - I want to startup from the Tiger disk like I did when I reinstalled, but it won't startup from the DVD. I'd like to run Disk Repair on the main hard drive. It showed some errors when I ran a Test using the Disk Utility.
I'm hoping this is all related. The computer seems to be running fine, but I can't update or find my missing space. Any advice I can get on these issues would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Jon

Is your computer saving a panic.log after each of the kernel panics? You can see by opening Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and looking for it. I'm not at my Mac now, so I can't tell you under what section to look for that log.
When you try to boot from the CD, are you holding down the 'C' key as the computer reboots? You can also try rebooting with the Option key pressed, which will present you with a list of bootable volumes. It will also give you access to the Apple Hardware Test (if this is the DVD that came with the computer). If you can select the Apple Hardware Test, I'd recommend doing the Extended Test, which will test the hardware, including the RAM.
For the disappearing disk space, you could have some process that is going bezerk and filling up the log files. In any event, to see where you disk space is being used, download and run Omni DiskSweeper.
