Kernal_task: 742.5MB & mds is 6.16 GB
I am running 10.7.5 on an Old MacPro 1,1
Activity monitor says that kernel_task is 742.5 MB & mds is 6.16 GB.
Any solutions on how to reduce this?
Thanks!

Step 1
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -F '$Time $Message' -k Sender mdworker -o -k Message Rne Norm -k Sender mds | tail | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.
Step 2
Enter the following command as in Step 1 and post the output:
mdutil -as 2>&- | pbcopy
You can then quit Terminal.
Step 3
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Terminal. In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash reports related to Spotlight. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. A Spotlight crash report has a name beginning in "mds" or "mdworker" and ending in ".crash". Select the most recent such report, if any, from the System and User subcategories and post the entire contents—the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs—they're very long and not helpful.

For several days I have been having difficulties having the MacBook Pro (Lion) complete shutdowns. Eventually I have to hard reset it.
On reboot almost always Spotlight starts building its index again. (I even gave it 2 full days once in case the indexing not completing was the issue but the laptop had just stayed hung). Disk Utility and even the otherwise pathetic Tech Tools Pro 6 report no errors in directories or structures,
Today, I just noticed a strange new series of messages, while I was not using the computer all day and no apps were running....
They are shown below (I narrowed the search to Spotlight in Console)

Any thoughts on what these are all about and how to get rid of these problems?
Thanks and Happy New Year.
ImranTo the best of my knowledge, the CaptiveNetworkSupport daemon has to do with WiFi and networking.
Some things to try:
Visit ~/Library/Caches <–Trash everything in this folder (it will rebuild after reboot)
Reboot your Mac. | Empty the Trash. | Reboot your Mac.
You cannot empty the trash until after you reboot because the files are still in use. When you reboot the second time, after you have emptied the trash, it is to ensure that none of the files are in use, and the new caches are rebuilt successfully. You may notice it's a little slow at first, that is because it is rebuilding the caches.
Rebuild the Spotlight Index.
This is simple. Open up Spotlight in System Prefs, drag your Mac HD into the Privacy section, then remove it. It rebuilds the spotlight database.
Repair Disk Permissions for good measure as well.
See if that helps anything. -
Kernal_task real memory high (493.4 MB)
I'm having trouble trying to figure out why my kernal_task's real memory is so high (it fluctuates up and down around 493.4 MB). I booted my MBP in safe mode and checked my activity monitor and it was running about 201 MBs. Right now as I am typing this I have no external devices hooked into my computer except an external monitor but i'm pretty sure thats not the problem. My computer gets real hot, real quick and I don't know how to bring the kernal task's real memory back down to or below 200 MBs. CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE! It would be much appreciated thank you.
So here is a complete list of what is going on in my computer in Activity Manager (left out all the other columns for easy readability, if I need to add any back in for any help let me know):

Kernal_Task taking 5GBs, Maverick upgrade
Hello,
If anyone might have some help for me. A couple of days ago, I upgraded my Macbook Pro (15in, early 2011) to Maverick. Yesterday and today, my computer started running incredibly slowly (numerous pinwheels). I finally got an error message that I did not have enough memory to run MS Word and the computer crashed. I spoke with an Apple representative who led me through a NVRAM and PRAM resetting process. This seems to work for a couple minutes, but then after I open a few applications (Word seems to trigger things, but maybe it just takes some time), my kernal_task and mds processes rocket up in the the GBs. Kernal_task is running at 4.5 GB usually. Nearly a year ago, I had installed extra ram. I now have 8GBs which is being completely used as I type this. Fan running.
When I upgraded this computer to Mountain Lion I had a terrible time of it and was forced to do a clean reinstall. I'm wondering if this will be again the case. I have an external Time Machine back-up from immediately before the update.
I figure I will end up bring this to the Genius bar, but wanted to approach this on a couple fronts.
Any advice?

I have run a EtreCheck on the machine.
The report is below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I spoke with Apple Support and we went through the normal proceedure:
1) Run Disk Utilities...check
2) Delete cache files, reboot
The machine was still running high unless I disconected the ThunderBolt Monitor... it would then run normal. If I plugged it back in, eventually the kernal_task would go extremely high.
So, a thought came to mind,
I had recently purchased a 27" iMac with a second 27" monitor,
So in talking with Apple we decided that changing out the monitor to the "new" 27" one would at lease confirm that the monitor is not the issue.
When I changed it out... my MBP worked perfectly!
Here is where it gets interesting...
I ran the MBP with the "new" monitor for enough time that it should have spiked the Kernal_Task. It didn't.
I then, because of the set up, disconected the "new" monitor and reconected the "original" monitor,
It has been over 24 hours now and the MBP has NOT had any Kernal_task spikes at all!!
So, at lease for me, the issue seems to be solved.
Now, I would like to know why.
Could connecting the "new" monitor have changed a setting that was corrupt within the MBP?
Anyone with any ideas?

Spotlight mds bringing down system, constantly leaking RAM & disk access
Spotlight is going rampant here.
The mds (metadata server, aka Spotlight) process is constantly accessing the disk and writing some data to it, filling it until there is no space left on the device. I cannot find out what file it is writing to. I've tried with fsevener which sadly didn't help.
mds is also eating up all the CPU cycles it can get leaving my system fully loaded at all times.
The mds process is also taking up inceasingly huge amounts of memory, causing permanent swapping of memory and bringing the system to a grinding halt. (Cache Hits go down below 1%, About 250.000 pageins happen per minute.) Memory Footprint is going up to several hundred MB or real RAM.
$ vm_stat
Mach Virtual Memory Statistics: (page size of 4096 bytes)
Pages free: 53166.
Pages active: 275736.
Pages inactive: 135633.
Pages wired down: 59698.
"Translation faults": 10217862.
Pages copy-on-write: 136166.
Pages zero filled: 5983710.
Pages reactivated: 96772.
Pageins: 1236330.
Pageouts: 77113.
Object cache: 24391 hits of 1183451 lookups (2% hit rate)
(This is 95 minutes after reboot. Only running: Finder, Terminal, LaunchBar, Safari, Mail)
This bahaviour goes until the disk is full and I get a "low disk space" warning. Then mds crashes, the system frees up the (temporary?) files written by the process and also frees the RAM taken up by it. Resulting in even more swapping, as the system tries to page-in other processes now. Subseqently the system launches a new mds process and the game starts over.
Things I've tried to remedy:
Rebuilt spotlight index several times. Including totally deleting the .Spotlight-V100 folder on local volumes. Doesn't help, takes about 16 to 20 hours to rebuild on my machine, so is not a thing one wants to just-try.
Reinstalled 10.5.5 Combo Update, doesn't help. Privileges are repaired.
Turn off spotlight completely: Does indeed stop the madness, but now I cannot find anything on my system. So this is not a solution at all.
I've tried to keep the index small by excluding more and more stuff in the privacy settings of the Spotlight PreferencePane. This doesn't solve the problem either.
My System:
PowerBook G4 1.5GHz
2GB RAM (Maximum) (Tested with ASD ok, Rember ok. Different RAM modules, also ok.)
160GB HD (5GB free) (SMART ok, Blockscan ok, Filesystem ok, File privileges ok)
Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F33) including Security Update 2008/007 (no further updates available)
Any help or suggestions are welcome. I'm happy to provide any further details you may need.
Best regards
PepiJ D McIninch wrote:
This probably isn't Spotlight so much as one of the index plugins (mdimporters). Spotlight itself is very robust, however, all it takes is a single bad indexing plugin. MDS, basically, identifies a file type and loads in a list of plugins that are registered for that file type and executes a routine in the plugin to grab the metadata. If the plugin is improperly written, it can go haywire.
Thanks for the suggestion, I already had checked that.
I don't have any custom (read non-apple provided) Spotlight or QuickLook Plug-Ins on my system. So it is unlikely that it is related to a custom .mdimporter Plug-In. (Might be a buggy Apple one going rampant though.)
I've personally found Spotlight to be quite a solid technology as well. Just the user interface provided by Apple is terrible and especially useless in the Finder (Taking away functionality, or making it horrific to use since Tiger… but that is another story.)
What was the last application that you installed prior to it going crazy? Perhaps one of the last 2-3...
Failing that, you can wipeout the metadata database for a Volume like so (from Terminal.app):
*sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/yourvolumehere*
... or '/' in place of '/Volumes/...' for the local disk. You can turn off metadata indexing for a volume entirely like so:
As I already said, rebuilding the index from scratch doesn't help. Completely deleting it, and rebuilding doesn't remedy as well.
*sudo lsof | grep mdimporter*
... which might help you understand what's being used to index, and this:
/System/Library/Spotlight/Chat.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/Chat
/System/Library/Spotlight/iCal.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/iCal /System/Library/Spotlight/Mail.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/Mail
Nothing fancy here.

rather than mess around with all of this and maybe fix it until the next Spotlight problem manifests itself, why not just disable Spotlight with Spotless, and use EasyFind instead? Easyfind finds everything, has more options, is reliable, and doesn't cause problems .... and doesn't eat up any space on your hard drive.
...and doesn't find what I need. Thanks for the suggestions though. As I said, totally disabling Spotlight is not an option. I'll stay far away from mysterious tools, as I know what I am doing in a Terminal.

How do I stop mds from dominating my Macbook Pro
I use a Macbook pro with a 2.53 ghz i5 and 8 gigs of RAM, running Lion 10.7.2. Right now the process "mds" is taking up 5.84 gigs of real memory and .6% of CPU, though earlier it was taking up 6 gigs of real memory and 30% CPU. Mds and spotlight have been slowing it down to a standstill for months. Initially I was told by an Apple Store Genius to rebuild my spotlight index, which helped for a short while before the computer reverted back to it's normal slowness. Then I suspected Time Machine's constant backups were the culprit, so two weeks ago I stopped those and started running nightly backups using a program called "Time Machine Editor". The computer was running great until today. Most of the suggestions I've seen for this problem are either 1) Reindex spotlight, which I've done multiple times to no avail, or 2) Turn off Spotlight, which is not an option since I spend most of my time in iPhoto, a program for which Spotlight is crucial. I also don't want to do a full OS reinstallation because it would take too long and I doubt it would be effective in this situation. I have a feeling that there is one file or set of files that is messing up Spotlight, is there any way I could find these specific files and get them to stop messing everything up? Or do you have any other suggestions? Restarts don't help either.

There is a known issue with MDS 2012 and business rules with a combination of "must be unique" attributes. If you do not list the attributes in the same order that they were created you will get the generic error I cited. At first they told me it must be
in the same order the attributes are in and that worked on one entity but not the other. The difference was that in the second entity I previously rearranged the attributes in question. Once I changed the order in the business rule to reflect the *original*
order it worked like a champ.
Hopefully this helps save someone some time and money. -

Issues in persisting dynamic entity and view objects using MDS
Hi All,
I'm trying to create dynamic entity and view objects per user session and to persist these objects throughout the session, I'm trying to use MDS configurations(either file or Database) in adf-config.xml.
I'm facing following two errors while trying to run the app module:
1. MDS error (MetadataNotFoundException): MDS-00013: no metadata found for metadata object "/model/DynamicEntityGenModuleOperations.xml"
2. oracle.mds.exception.ReadOnlyStoreException: MDS-01273: The operation on the resource /sessiondef/dynamic/DynamicDeptEntityDef.xml failed because source metadata store mapped to the namespace / DEFAULT is read only.
I've gone through the following links which talks about the cause of the issue, but still can't figure out the issue in the code or the config file. Please help if, someone has faced a similar issue.
[http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E28271_01/doc.1111/e25450/mds_trouble.htm#BABIAGBG |http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E28271_01/doc.1111/e25450/mds_trouble.htm#BABIAGBG ]

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////Hi Frank,
I m trying to save entity and view object xml by calling writeXMLContents() and saveXMLContents() so that these objects can be retrieved using the xmls later on.
These methods internally use MDS configuration in adf-config.xml, which is creating the issue.
Please share your thoughts on resolving this or if, there is any other way of creating dynamic entity/view objects for db tables created at runtime.

HI All ,
I have a requirement to add and delete files from MDS , and with this WLST command i am able to delete the file from MDS
deleteMetadata(application,server,docs) , and also i am able to add the file with this WLST command
importMetadata(application, server, fromLocation, docs="/**") , here with this i am able to add the file but my requirement is to add the file in to specific location like in MDS
i have folder apps and i want to add the file in apps folder , will there be any "toLocation" parameter which can be added in the above command or any other solution .
Regards,
KarthikIn Linux:
1>Go to this location, $AIA_HOME/aia_instances/AIA11gHOME/bin
2>run this command, source aiaenv.sh
3>Now goto this location, $AIA_HOME/aia_instances/$INSTANCE_NAME/config
4>open the file, UpdateMetaDataDP.xml
5>Update Your required files into the server, and place the path of those files in "UpdateMetaDataDP.xml"
<?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?>
<DeploymentPlan component="Metadata" version="3.0">
<Configurations>
<UpdateMetadata wlserver="fp" >
<fileset dir="${AIA_HOME}/AIAMetaData">
<include name= "AIAMetadata/**"/> // here, you need to give the path of your files
</fileset>
</UpdateMetadata>
</Configurations>
</DeploymentPlan>
6>After this, goto this path, $AIA_HOME/Infrastructure/Install/config
7>run this command, ant -f UpdateMetaData.xml
that's it, in running , it asks for username and password of your weblogic, then the files are successfully placed in the server -

Let me know if somebody has an idea of this .This is because of space character is jdev location i.e C:/jdev latest sanity/. Change the location of jdev to another directory which doesn't contain spaces and try again.

Unable to load XSD from the MDS
Hi,
We are undergoing this problem for the last 2 weeks. We are working with BPEL processes which refer the schema from MDS. Everything is working fine in dev which is a single server, but as soon as we moved the code to a clustered test environment, the interfaces are failing to load the XSDs often and they are working only intermittently. When they fail, we receive the following error:

We have never had this problem till moving to the clustered environment and all the XSDs in the MDS are configured properly to our knowledge. Any helpful pointers to the problem are very much appreciated.

Edited by: 989720 on May 2, 2013 4:57 AMWe have a sev-1 SR raised with Oracle and the issue hasn't been found yet. I had no idea it was a known issue as I couldn't find anything related to these on the web.
By the way it isn't a problem with the File and FTP adapters alone. Even the validate activity is failing to load the XSDs more often than not with the same error. Has anyone else faced the same issue?
