Kernal_task is taking up 300% CPU on my macbook pro while on battery

Kernal_task is taking up 300% CPU on my macbook pro while on battery, but goes back to normal while it's plugged into power source.  Battery life is still normal.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I just received my MBP Retina yesterday. I have not installed anything and the system is running so slow that when I type the text on the display is lagging behind my typing. Scrolling, app switching, etc. are all either choppy or I have to wait. Activity monitor shows kernal_task %CPU jumping between 500% to over 600% with 83 threads and about 675MB real memory. The fan is on continously, does not matter if it's plugged in or on the battery. NOT A GOOD FIRST TIME EXPERIENCE FOR ME.

  • Distnoted process consumes +300% cpu on my macbook pro (early 2011) using Yosemite

My fans keep ramping up on my macbook pro. I looked at processes using activity monitor, and noted that a process called distnoted was consuming +300% of the cpu. I've only been getting this problem on Yosemite, and didn't see any of this with the older OS X products. Is this something others are seeing, and more importantly whats the fix. Just searching around looks like this is a messaging function in kernal?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • How can I check the temperature of the CPU in the MacBook Pro retina

I want to check the temperature of the CPU in my MacBook Pro retina, but I can't find an application to do this. Is it even possible to do this?

I would find Marcel Bresink's Temperature Monitor more trustworty, as he has just updated the code and explicitly states compatibility with all 2012 models:  http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
I have just downloaded the "Marcel Bresink's Temperature Monitor"/
You are correct, it does give a more accurate reading.

  • Having trouble with kernal_task, fan, overheating, and lag issues with my Macbook Pro. What should I do?

I've had this problem with my Macbook Pro for the past few months. I am starting to become increasing dissatisfied with this product since it's less than even a year old and going through so many problems. I've taken at least 10 trips to the Apple Genius Bar in the past year.
    I've had issues with
    1) erratic trackpad
    2) wifi connection timeouts
    3) kernal_task taking up 300% of my CPU, my fan become crazy and just having my laptop lag to the point where I can't even use it.
I sent in my laptop for repairs last week again and they replaced my logic board and some other things. I recieved my laptop back yesterday, but I'm finding the same exact problem is happening again this morning. I still have warranty and set up another appointment for a few days... but the amount of trips I've taken is really starting to irritate me and my problem still isn't solved. What should I do? Is there another way to solve this or should I just keep going back to Genius Bar...
I regret buying this laptop. =\ It was so expensive but yet has so many problems. I've never had to deal with anything this cumbersome with my past few laptops.

If you've taken it back for the same problems over and over again, I suggest that you start asking for a replacement. Ensure that you've backed everything up to an ext HD and removed your personal data and information. IIRC, repeating problems warrant a replacement.

  • IPhoto is taking TOO much cmd from my MacBook Pro !!

    Hello !
iPhoto is taking too much cmd from my computer. When im looking at photos the cpu jumps up to 80-90% of my CPU en when i'm editing photos it can jump up to 160% !!!! Thats just way too much. It *** to be on this good computer and cannot look or work with photos in a software which is specially built for this computer ! How can I fix this ? This is just NOT acceptable !
    Please help me !
    MacBook Pro
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

    cmd?
Have you tried the usual simple troubleshooting steps?
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Is 54 Degrees C safe for a CPU on 2011 macbook pro?

I have been having multipled overheating problems with my Macbook pro for about 9 months now. I regularily check the CPU heat and it shows an average of 54 degrees C with minimal app usage for about an hour. Also my charger seems to become scolding hot after usage as well. Please help. Thanks

54 degrees is not that bad.....that's my daily average.
with regards to your charger, it gets hot when it's charging your battery up to 80% because it's on fast charge mode.  after 80%, it goes to trickle charge which is cooler on your adapter.
but when it's scolding hot, you have to take it to the Apple Store for a replacement.

  • Red CPU and Slow Macbook Pro

My macbook pro has been running super slow for the past 4 months . Whenever I go to the activity monitor I find the CPU screen full of red lines, I have many applications that I don't know know running and I try to quit or force quit them but it doesn't work with all of them (I choose the ones under my username).
Then the CPU screen suddenly gets black and my computer gets fast again for a while (like an hour or less) then gets slow again. Is my macbook infected with a trojan or what could be really going on ?

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Monitor the activity so you might note what is hogging CPU time when the computer becomes sluggish.

  • HT4543 Does anyone know a good external CPU fan for macbook pros?

Whenever I attempt to play games on my macbook pro, mid 2012 edition, it heats up to an extreme temperature in the top-left hand corner of my computer. I recognize this isn't safe for the computer. Do you guys know a good mac cpu fan, if that is indeed the heated piece of the computer, that I can plug into my mac via USB port or something of that nature?

It's good that you're looking into something to cool down your MBP. Unfortunately, even good fans will only moderately - maybe 5•F at best.
    Also, download this free software:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/articles/keep-you-and-your-macbook-pro-cool
And use your machine so that the temperature is never above 160•F at any time.

  • Creative Cloud is killing the CPU on latest MacBook Pro

Any solution? Seems like thousands of people have the same issue when i google on this. How come there is no solution yet since it seems to have been an issue for over 7 month?
On my Macbook Pro Retina with 16gb ram the Creative Cloud is eating 600% of my CPU. Can easily boil eggs on the keyboard.

same here... and it seems like Adobe is ignoring us?

  • Kernel_task is using more than 250% of CPU and My Macbook Pro (13 inch i7 8gb Ram Mid 2012) is getting heated, when ever running Facetime or Games.

When ever i try to use FaceTime or Counter Strike GO my CPU gets more than 250% usage and my mac gets really slow.. This is the same when ever i try to run any middle end applications not extreme ones. Tried googling and apple support communities uninstalled all my 3rd party softwares. any help??

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below is a partial list of causes for this condition.
    Thermal overload
This can be due to accumulation of dust, high ambient temperature, or to the malfunction of a cooling fan or temperature sensor. The kernel tries to compensate by throttling back the CPU's. You might see messages like the following in the Console window:
    SMC::smcHandleInterruptEvent WARNING status=0x0 (0x40 not set) notif=0x0
The timestamps of those messages (if any) indicate the times, since the log was last cleared, when a processor was being throttled because of high temperature.
Note that if the problem is caused by a faulty sensor that reads too high, there may be no actual overheating.
The Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or temperature sensor.
    Using Apple Hardware Test
    Encryption
Transferring large amounts of data to or from an encrypted disk image or FileVault volume puts an extra load on the kernel. If both the source and the destination are encrypted, the load may be doubled. If you transfer data from an encrypted disk image on an encrypted partition to another such image on another encrypted partition, the load may be quadrupled.
This issue probably doesn't affect late-model Macs with an Intel i-series, recent Xeon, or later processor. Those processors support hardware-accelerated encryption. You can determine what kind of processor you have by selectingAbout This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility bycompletely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode (with the shift key held down at the startup chime.) Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or booting in safe mode may not be as easy as you think it is.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
In some cases the issue has reportedly been resolved by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.

  • CPU whine on macbook pro 13in

Hi, ive been experiencing the alleged CPU whine, and was wondering if apple will fix or replace my machine for a new one. Im under the 1 yr warranty.

    fuad24,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
They will fix it if they find there is a problem, take it into your closest Apple Store after making an appointment and they will look at it. Once they have then they will determine if there really reason to repair it.

  • Why is there 208.28gb of space taked up by 'Other' on my Macbook Pro HD?

Here's the screenshot of my 'About This Mac'. Sorry its not zoomed in but the details are that 'Other' takes up over 200gbs of my 500 gb hard drive. i only have 50gbs left now!

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Photos taking up too much storage on Macbook Pro

This is quite frustrating. Photos and Movies are taking up quite a bit of my storage on my Macbook and not sure how to get rid of them. They are not saved on my Macbook through iPhoto so not sure how to delete all of these? My iPhone photo stream is connected but its not holding 44GB worth of photos thats for sure! I've run OmniSweep but that hasn't been able to identify the location of all these. Just really want to know how to wipe them as I'm unable to save other files on my mac or through Dropbox.
    Thanks
    Jon

Did you look in your home folder>pictures? As I suspect you know, that is where the iPhoto libraries are located. I do not know if other photos are stored there.
