Kernal_task real memory high (493.4 MB)

I'm having trouble trying to figure out why my kernal_task's real memory is so high (it fluctuates up and down around 493.4 MB). I booted my MBP in safe mode and checked my activity monitor and it was running about 201 MBs. Right now as I am typing this I have no external devices hooked into my computer except an external monitor but i'm pretty sure thats not the problem. My computer gets real hot, real quick and I don't know how to bring the kernal task's real memory back down to or below 200 MBs. CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE! It would be much appreciated thank you.

So here is a complete list of what is going on in my computer in Activity Manager (left out all the other columns for easy readability, if I need to add any back in for any help let me know):

  • High Page Reads/Sec on Windows 2008 R2 64-bit running on VMware but very low Real Memory & Page file Usage.

    Hello All,
    Below is the server configuration,
    OS: Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise 64 Bit
    Version: 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
    CPU: 4 (@ 2.93 GHz, 1 core)
    Memory: 12 GB
    Page file: 12 GB
    1. The actual utilization, be it a 15 minute sample, hourly, weekly etc, the utilization of real memory has never crossed 20% and the page file usage is at 0.1%. For some reason, the Pages/Sec>Limit% counter reports 100% continuously regardless of the
sampling intervals. Upon further observation, the Page Reads/Sec value is somewhere between 150~450 and Page Input/Sec is somewhere between 800~8000. Does this indicate a performance bottleneck? (I've in the interim asked the Users, App. Owners to see if they
notice any performance degradation and awaiting response). If this indicates a performance issue, please could someone help list down how to track this down further to which process/memory mapped file is causing it? and what I should go about performing to
    fix this problem please?
p.s., initially the Security logs were full on this server and since page file is tied to Application, Security and System logs, this was freed up to see if this is causing the high page reads but this doesn't.
    2. If the above does not necessarily indicate a performance problem, please can someone reference few KB articles that confirms this? Also, in this case, will there be any adverse effects if attempting to fine tune a server which is already running fine?
assuming App. Owners confirm there isn't any performance degradation.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Based on the description, we can try to download Server Performance Advisor (SPA) to help further analyze the performance of the server. SPA can generate comprehensive diagnostic reports and charts and provides recommendations to help you quickly analyze
    issues and develop corrective actions.
Regarding this tool, the following articles can be referred to for more information.

  • Is it normal for Kernal_Task(0) to be using 600  MB of real memory?

I was running some diagnostics and I keep noticing that Kernal_Task is using a ton of real memory on my system. I just had the mother replaced (the original fried). My machine (macbook pro, spring 2011) is running pretty hot as well, although Kernal is not taking up a ton of CPU resources.
    Here's a screen shot: http://imgur.com/yvAt0

Probably not out of the ordinary.  I just checked mine and it's at 574 MB.
Here's a article related to this subject:
Kernel_task taking up RAM in OS X
If you google "kernel_task memory usage" you will find a lot of hits on this subject.

  • 870+ MB of kernel_task real memory immediately after boot

    This is a 2012 MacBook Air 13" — 1.8ghz i5, 4GB
    It's running the latest 10.8.3
When I boot, the kernel_task is already using 866MB of real memory. This seems very, very high.
Are there any tools or utilities that I can use to get a sense of what's driving that without iterating through uninstalling everything?
The only 3rd party kext is Little Snitch; kextstat shows that it has 0x46000 wired, which is only ~286kb.

    Normal.

    Hello,
I've noticed under my Activity Monitor that Karnel_Task is taking too much "real memory".

Well, this new one lasts just a little longer. I believe that is something else that is eating up the battery.

  • Mail slowly eats more and more Real Memory until it's super sluggish

My Mail had been giving me lots of problems.
Basically it is fine when I open it and starts to become more and more slow and unresponsive the longer I have it open. I ultimately have to quit, and it always has to be a force quite because it just gets jammed.
I started looking at Activity Monitor and have noticed that when I first run it, it uses about 150 megs of Real Memory. (I have 4gigs). Over the course of 2 hours, the Real Memory used creeps upwards and upwards, until it's over a GIG. The performance just gets worse and worse. The MB Pro's fans start whizzing away.
Anyone know why this might be happening and what I can do to stop it?
    Thanks so much
    Scott

Found a post in another Forum which (so far) seems to have fixed my problem:
"I spent some time on the phone with Apple tech support today. They were very helpful and appeared to have solved the problem. They had me go to iSync in the applications directory, go the Preferences and then click on Reset Sync History. First they had me log out of MobileMe, but not sure that was important. I logged back in to MobileMe. I have now been using my Mac for an hour now with no recurrance of the safarisyncclient".

(I do not speak english, all translated by google. Sorry.)
The process "kernel_task" of my MacBook Air is always occupying a lot of "Real Memory", always up to 1.5GB. Why? How can I solve?
    Thanks and sorry bad english.

  • Spotlight (mds) always takes 4+ gb real memory

    Hi all,
    setup: mac pro 2008 8-core, 16 gb ram, 4 HDs (1 SSD, 1x2TB, 2x1TBs combined into a single 2TB raid 0), and a time machine disk
Since Snow Leopard, the mds process has been taking much more memory than it should. In Snow Leopard, the console reported constant mds/mdworker crashes spaced 10-15 min apart (bursttrie.h crash, as described https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2334626?start=0&tstart=0. I tried fixing permissions, onyx to clear caches, erasing the spotlight indexes manually (.spotlight-v100 directories in each folder), and using mdutil (-Ea), but nothing fixed the problem. I eventually turned off spotlight/timemachine.
I upgraded to Lion in hopes that it would fix mds crashing. Once spotlight finished indexing, mds appears not to crash anymore in console (although it reports miscellanious errors, including "mdworker: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary." every few minutes. However, the memory usage has not been fixed (attached image). Peeking at mdworker activity using fsusage does not show anything informative (just opening files that I access e.g. windows.plist). When I restart or force quick mds, the memory usage quickly climbs back up in a matter of minutes.
Anyone have any ideas? The only thing unique about this set up is that I have many small files on a raid 0 setup.

I had a similar problem, after running Lion for a few days I noticed that mds was gradually eating up more and more Real Memory.
Monitoring mds following a restart and logon eventually saw it climb gradually to 4GB of Real Memory and keep going.
I tried various options such as adding some of my volumes to the Spotlight Privacy section but this made no difference.
Eventually I used Disk Utility to erase my Time Machine volume and allow it to perform a full backup again.
So far mds Real Memory has settled around the 900MB mark and Virtual Memory is currently at 3GB.
This does seem excessive to me though since I have 12GB of RAM it is not impacting on the performance of other memory hungry apps such as Photoshop.
    Hope this helps.
    Bob

  • Full use of installed "real" memory not used.

    Hi
    I have a Power Mac G5 (Dual 2GHz), running OS X Tiger 10.4.11.
When you upgrade RAM, does the OS automatically make use of this or do you need to make system changes? I ask because I have 3GB of RAM and I never see it being fully used. I've tested this whilst using apps like Photoshop CS3, and monitoring RAM useage via Activity Monitor. I understand Mac OS X makes great use of virtual memory, so when does real memory come into action?
    Thanks
    gtds

The memory being recognized by the system is what is shown when you select +About This Mac+ from the Apple menu. You can also run System Profiler for more details. If that shows 3 GB of RAM as expected, it is being recognized and the Mac will use it when needed. Virtual memory is still used, but it will be used to a lesser extent with more RAM installed.
If there is a lot of green in Activity Monitor's diagram of System Memory usage, that is good. If you run multiple large apps such as Photoshop and actually do some system intensive tasks, you will probably see less green, but RAM usage is not like CPU usage; Mac OS X is not going to use the RAM just because it's there. It will use the RAM when it is needed.
If the Mac is not recognizing the expected 3GB of RAM, that's a problem. You should run System Profiler to see what modules are not as expected.

  • Extended memory is virtual memory space or Real Memory ?

    HI ,
I would like to know whether the extended memory is virtual memory or its real memory. What is the parameter used to set the usage of the real memory of the system and the virtual memory of the system ( I want to know with ref to UNIX environment), and also clear about the hep memory( virtual or real).
    Thanks in Advance

Hi, I hope this will help:
The virtual memory consist of physical memory and OS swap space. Virtual memory can be allocated by the SAP system.
In the virtual memory exist shared memory and local memory.
Your question was regarding extended memory. Extended memory (user context) exist in shared memory. Heap memory exist in local memory.

  • LockScreen.app using 3Gb real memory under Server 10.5.2

I'm using ARD to remotely administer a brand new XServe with 16 Gb system memory. I run long lived ARD sessions, typically using 'curtain' (screen lock) mode. I recently noticed that Activity Monitor claims that LockScreen.app is using more than 3 Gb of real memory. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a memory leak in LockScreen.app? Is there any way to avoid this?
    Thanks,
    Geva

Permissions Repair is still slow in 10.5.2, but faster than before and with no error messages. On my MBP 160Gb with >1mil files and only 12Gb of free space, it took approximately 4 minutes instead of the 10+ minutes it took just prior to the upgrade. It still hangs on 1 Minute but then gets on with it quite a bit faster after the initial hang. Still much slower than in Tiger 'though.

  • Real memory seems under used

Why does everyone keep telling you to fit a whole bunch of memory to your computer to make it work better? Story fails to add up to me on checking the Activity Monitor, with Virtual Memory always being used in far greater amounts than Real Memory, which is basically left there in the corner twiddling its thumbs waiting 'just in case' I re-open some past app, which isn't going to happen. Sounds more like a virtual story than a true story to me.

That's probably because you're "virtually" ignorant of how memory management works in OS X. Read the following articles for enlightenment:

  • Real Memory vs CPU usage?

    I have a few questions:
    - Should I look at CPU or Real Memory to find out which applications are eating a lot of power?
    - Moreover, looking @ my activity monitor, I noticed Firefox and iTunes and Mail eating up much memory, is this normal or is this a Lion issues.
    - What is " Kernel task " as conveyed in the image.. It is using up almost 1GB of ram!
         - Moreover, am barely running anything huge, like AutuCad, and yet I have used 4.75GB of ram?

Kernel Task is the OS - kill that and you won't be able to run anything
You're not using more than half the 8gb you have so don't worry about it.
Change Activity Monitor to show My Processes to see the sort of things you can safely play with.
    Regards,
    Colin R.
    PS Mine looks like this:

  • Kernel_task   Root   584% CPU 745MB real memory

Machine has become really slow and throttled and the fans are very loud.  Shut down, restarted, same thing. All software updated.  Anyone know what's going on?

But not necessarily the same problem.  Would you go to your doctor and say "You examined a friend of mine and I have the same symptom, so what's wrong with me?"
Large amounts of virtual memory are not abnormal.  All that means is that the system has pushed a bunch of recently used data off onto disk to free up ram for other processes.  If the processes you're running collectively need more active memory than you have installed in the machine or if you're boot volume is almost full things can slow down dramatically, but otherwise the size of virtual memory is not all that relevant.
pid 0 on my machine has 95 threads open, 700 Mb real memory, but only 49 Mb virtual memory. 4.5 Gb of virtual memory sounds excessive and my guess at a cause would be some third-party app or plugin or some such with a memory leak.  As a diagnostic, try restarting in Safe Mode and see if the problem is still there.  If it goes away in safe mode, then you'll to have to tell what 3P processes you normally run.
