Kernal_Task running constantly since upgrade to Mavericks
I too am having an issue with Kernal Task". Memory should not be an issue on my Mac Pro Tower, as I have 48 GB of ram. It is running all the time and slows down all the basic functions of my MAC- like saving documents and opening files in the finder. And the thing it hates the most, is "Saving As" in any of my Adobe apps.
I have run an Etre Report. I sure would appreciate some advise.
Thanking you guys in advance,
Rita

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Either Mail will crash or the iMac will run so slowly as to be unusable. With both running, the HDD spins constantly at a high rate of speed.Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
Macbook pro running painfully slowly since upgrade to Mavericks and worse since Yosemite
Hi, since upgrading to Mavericks my previously excellent 2011 Macbook Pro is running painfully slowly, and things have only got worse since the upgrade to Yosemite. It takes anything up to 10 minutes to get fully functional from opening the lid on standby, can take a good 5 minutes to connect to wifi, and I am getting stuck with constant spinning beach balls. I've cleaned things up, and deleted anything unnecessary so I have adequate space on the HDD but this doesn't seem to make any difference, and I'm not running any particularly memory hungry software. It was working perfectly before these upgrades and I'm really wishing I could just downgrade back to Mountain Lion now! I'm no expert so could really use some help. Do I just need more RAM or is this something more complicated?
I've run Etresoft and here are the results (I note there is some adware listed on Safari, but I don't use it ,using Chrome and Firefox instead):

I'm running the latest OS 10.9.1 Mavericks (late 2009 iMac). 8 gigs of RAM. 150 gigs free space on computer. Since upgrading to Mavericks, apps are slow to open, with frequent "spinning ball" interruptions. Repaired Disk Permissions - no help. Repaired disk - no problems indicated. Did notice in going to Utilities/Console that there are 4000 messages over a 3 day period. Any suggesstions how to correct this sudden slow down, other than psychiatric help?
Yes. Many messages show up when I try to use Office for Mac 08. Here's a sample (and one that repeats over and over again):
2/11/14 1:01:16.577 PM Microsoft Word[1912]: OTAtomicAdd32 is deprecated and will be removed soon. Please stop using it.
Also getting many msgs when I use Chrome. -
Since upgrading to Mavericks, Safari/Adobe are constantly blocking access to PDF files
Since upgrading to Mavericks, Safari/Adobe (Version 7.0 (9537.71)) are constantly blocking access to PDF files.
I can intuit what this is all about, however, I can find no information about it... the Adobe Plugin/Safari is apparently building a "white-list" of "trusted sites," but I can not find any information about this white-list -- where it is stored, how to revoke permisions, how to "one-time" permissions, etc.
Anyone have any ideas?I am experiencing this exact same behavior since upgrading to Mavericks, too.

Since upgrading to Mavericks, my Time Machine is stuck on "Preparing Backup".
Since upgrading to Mavericks, every time I attempt to run a Time Machine backup, I can only get it to go as far as "Preparing Backup". I've left it like that for hours just to see if it's slow. I've also stopped and restarted Time Machine multiple times to no avail....it just gets stuck at that point. Please help.

Screensaver not working since upgrading to Mavericks
As the title says my screensavers doesn't 'kick in' since upgrading to Mavericks at the weekend. I've tried reselecting my chosen photo folder but it still doesn't work. All it does is stay on the desktop screen. Has anyone else had this and know how to fix it?
I'm running an early 2012 (pre retina) MBP 15" with the "classic" style screensaver.
TIAI think I've finally fixed this problem. I tried changing the delay time, I tried re-choosing the designated folder, and I even tried re-installing Mavericks and none of it solved the issue.
As a last resort I tried deleting the folder I keep my photos in for the screen saver and created a new one and it appears to working fine now (touch wood). -
Since upgrading to Mavericks my Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro requires administrative password on every launch which seems like an unnecessary step. Does anyone know why this is happening and what can be done to eliminate this?
Download and run the combo updater to refresh your files.
OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 (Update (Combo)
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1746
Open Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions
You might need to remove and reinstall Acrobat. Be sure you are in an admin account when installing. -
CC 7.1: Ridiculous render times since upgrading to mavericks
This is my first time editing a project in Premiere Pro CC7.1 since upgrading to Mavericks. Playback was running very glitchy while trying to play a very simple composition imported from AE. Just a basic motion graphic, nothing too heavy. My computer froze and reset 2 times while trying to play it before rendering, so I am now rendering the sequence to see if this will solve the issue and it's rendering 1 frame every 15-20 seconds.
In the past this same operation would have taken 10-15 seconds total to render.
I'm using a brand new MacBook Pro Retina 15" 2.7GHz with 16GB of RAM.
Has anyone else had this issue and/or any suggestions on how to fix it?
Thanks in advance!!I have been seeing this and a wide variety of similar problems - the Adobe-Mac community appears to be exploding on the issue of CC and Macs/Mavericks esp. in the last few weeks. A ton of problems people are having after a recent update of Adobe CC program or programs. I see blame being tossed everywhere, and this doesn't look like it's going to die down and go away by itself.
Just my .02, but...
Every major OS upgrade is going to throw off problems with 3rd party (and even 1st party) software as developers identify and squash bugs and incompatibilities - this can take months to work itself out. And is a predicable outcome from having multiple programmers working independently on anything that works together.
Rolling back an OS is often not a viable option. Rolling back a software update is usually easier. Messing about with lots of moving parts can easily compound a problem. So can skipping a step in a complicated set of instructions or following the wrong set of instructions.
A recommendation based on my personal opinion & 20+ years of experience: Don't try to roll back Mavericks, but do roll back to the previous version of CC (before 7.1). If you use Time Machine (and it ran after the Mavericks upgrade and before the CC 7.1 update), this should be pretty easy to do.
Take the time to first make a complete & manual backup of your system to an external drive (if you've got the money, a clone of your hard drive, otherwise an image of your hard drive on something other than your internal hard drive), and a separate live backup of your personal files on an external drive. Just in case...
If you don't/didn't use Time Capsule or the above didn't solve the problem, then you might need to consider one of two options:
Uninstall CC completely, and install CC 'one version' prior to the one that gave you problems. So if you're using Pr 7.1, go back to 7.0. Here's instructions on how to completely remove CC: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html and here's instructions for how to get an older version of a CC program: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/download-previous-versions-creative-applications. html or http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=98&platform=Macintosh
Rollback the OS to Mountain Lion, but recognize this isn't a trivial exercise and may result in compounding problems, esp. if you ignore a first step of taking a complete backup and/or don't follow the instructions to the letter. Here's a tutorial: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6162
Here's a related thread (one of many) with useful info: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5983648#5983648
Like brain surgery (which I've had!), results can vary from one system to another, and you need to own treating every computer as a unique entity. It's hard to exactly replicate a problem even with identical hardware and software/OS. That's another way of saying that all of this is not an iron-clad fix for your problems (my disclaimer) - use at your own risk.
And when you're out of the heat of the moment, please take this opportunity to learn the lesson of backup (that 97% of computer users haven't), and recognize that Time Machine is so very worthwhile to have in your wheelhouse.
Those of us in production environments (or not) can certainly choose to play the blame game, but imo these problems are a result of all our choices:
Apple for not allowing more extensive beta testing
Adobe for not taking full advantage of said beta testing
Power/production users for upgrading anything in a production environment before a) enough time has gone by that show-stopper problems are both identified and resolved and/or b) deploying on a non-production machine and fully testing before trying it out on a production machine.
Being in a production environment to me equates to balancing a need for current software/features against having a stable working environment. I generally put more emphasis on the latter. This is another lesson to learn once you're beyond the heat of the moment and to then keep in your wheelhouse.
And please Adobe:
Own the problem (even if you don't publicly admit it here or anywhere else - I'm personally fine with that)
Don't point fingers, it stirs a pot not worth stirring
Figure out the problem and fix it! It's gonna take time, so please get started if you haven't already.
Giving us progress updates would be nice, but if that's too hard or reputationally risky, skip that but keep working on fixing the problem. Please? -
Messages App| connectivity issues since upgrading to Mavericks
is anyone having problems since upgrading to Mavericks with connectivity issues in the "Messages" app? Im on a 2011 MacBook Pro. I will start a desktop share session with my folks (IMAC) and within 2-3 minutes of having access to their desktop, I'm unable to control any longer and their system freezes.
HI,
When iChat 3 came out someone tested whether it would work on the platform that was running iChat 2 and also tested whether iChat 2 would work on the later OS.
This eventually led to the Reinstall procedure for iChat 3 up to the iChat 5 version.
Since then the app has required either a Backup version from when it was working, a copy on another machine running the same OS and app version numbers (the two go hand in hand) or you have to Reinstall the whole OS which will always update you to the latest version of the OS (and in the case of Messages any updates it has had).

Since upgrading to Mavericks I have to force shut down to close frozen applications
Hi all,
Since upgrading to Mavericks I have experienced several times that sometimes when an application close a simple force quit is not enough. The application will disappear from my dock but remain on screen with the spinning ball, and any instances of the application I try to open will also freeze instantly. The only way to clear them is to do a force shut down via the power button on the back of my computer. I have experienced this with Mail, VLC and Finder so I do not think this an issue with a specific program. If anyone is having the same problem or has an idea of how to fix it, it would be much appreciatedPlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
Since upgrading to Mavericks I am finding that I am lucky to get 2 hours (when connected to WiFi) of use from my Macbook Pro. I have turned off Bluetooth ( which was not an issue previously), uninstalled Chrome, again not an issue before I upgraded, and have not seen any improvement.
I was using an older OS system (Snow Leopard) on my 2010 Macbook Pro. I am wondering now if the upgrade was an unwise move?jbuckworth,
which apps do you run under battery power? Are any of them identified as “apps using significant energy” when you click on the battery icon in the menu bar? If you have a 15-inch or 17-inch model, are your apps using the discrete GPU (which consumes more power than the integrated GPU)?
How many charge cycles has your battery accumulated?
How long have you had Mavericks installed? Is Spotlight still reïndexing your boot drive? (It does that whenever your OS is upgraded, because so many files change in an OS upgrade.) -
My Mac has gone really slow since upgrading to Mavericks. Any suggestions as to how to speed things up again?
First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -
Swirly rainbow with certain apps since upgrading to Maverick
Ever since upgrading to Maverick, I've had problems with certain apps, mainly iphoto and Word. I see where I probably need to get the upgraded iphoto app, but don't see anything about Word.
Thank you. Here is the report:

Since upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite Mail, Spotlight, Mission Control and App-Store don´t work correctly. Is it possible to return to Mavericks?
If you have an external drive with an OS X Time Machine backup, then do restore of your last backup. If you have an external drive with a bootable clone of your previous system, you can boot to that clone and re-clone the OS X on your external drive back to your Mac's internal drive.
If you do not have either of these available, then the reverting/restoring process becomes much more complicated and involves purchasing an external drive and backing up your current system to that drive, then erasing, reformatting your hard drive and now your only options to installng an OS X version is doing a clean install of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, then upgrading, again, to either OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion. OS X 10.9 Mavericks is no longer available for download and Apple has not made OS X 10.9 Mavericks available in any other form to be able to redownload and install.
Maybe it would be better to explain in detail your issues with Yosemite to see if any of us here can help you with your difficulties.
I am not running or using Yosemite, so I cannot help you with your Yosemite issues,
There are others here who can help you with Yosemite.
Good Luck.
