Kernal-Task up to 300%

HI , This is aamir , i am running a macbookpro 13" corei5 early 2011
i am having a issue form last 20 days , that kernal-task boost up to 300%
i changed OS up to 10.7 lion but with same result , my laptop is not working
normally , speed is slow , fan speed is fast , i changed Ram , Hard disk  but
still same problem , i also reset the SMC but no result .pls tell me that
where is the problem and how i got fix it ,
Thanks

Sounds like a runaway process from a program you installed, log in item etc. a software issue you restored back with that's corrupt.
Looks like you'll need a Fresh install.
Go through this, should help immensly.

  • Kernal Task is increasing and it's decreasing my FREE RAM

    Hi...
I've been noticing my RAM decreasing faster than before I installed the OS update to 10.4.9. I was looking at the Activity Monitor. I saw that the Kernal_Task activity is tremendously higher than the rest of the "Process Name." Is that normal? Also, when I launch any application, the Kernal-task increases even more and it doesn't decrease when I quit an application. Is that normal, too? My total RAM is 4.5 gigs.

    Hi
    Read this about Kernal_Task:

  • 10.5.2 and Kernal Task

Since installing 10.5.2 on my MacBookPro yesterday, Activity Monitor shows a Kernal Task running constantly, using about 4% of CPU, with an rsize of 60MB and virtual memory of 1.09GB. It soounds like the hard disk is also working overtime. This has been going on for about 15 hours.
    Any idea what this is?

kdb1, do you use FileVault? I'm wondering if the kernal task has something to do with FileVault.

  • Kernal task 100% constantly

Unibody 17" MBP 266mhz. Got my new MBP this week. Have posted on MacBook boards but haven't gotten a resolution yet. Sorry for posting here but I need this resolved. When I boot my MBP which takes about 4-6 mins. I go to Activity monitor and kernal tasks gives me a reading of at least 100%. This is even without opening any app. I looked in console and didn't see any errors. I am running presently in better performance, but it happens in the other mode also. If I boot in safe mode activity monitor is fine, looks normal. I did a reinstall but that didn't work. I ran TechTool pro and it didn't come up with any errors. I don't know what else to do
Forgot to mention I did a migration from old intel MBP

I'm not seeing anything, besides kernal_task, that is out of the ordinary.
Spotlight will show a dot in the center of the magnifying glass in your toolbar. If you click the magnifying glass, it will display information about how far along in the indexing process (if it is indeed indexing. If it isn't indexing, it will only display the search field)
I posited bad RAM because that might cause issues. I doubt it though. How large is your internal drive? At this point, I feel it has something to do with a bad migration. I would try to add a 2nd partition to your boot drive and do a clean install of Leopard on it (minimum install, you don't need to install printers, etc.) If your drive is large enough (at least 15 GB free), launch Disk Utility and select your boot disk (not volume, the boot disk will have some numbers beside it and not Macintosh HD.) Next click on the Partition Tab. On the left side of the Partition tab there is a graphic for the Volume Scheme, click on the little '+' sign on the lower left. You can drag the slider in the middle of the graphic to size the 2nd partition. Click Apply. Proceed to install OS X from your install disks to this 2nd partition. If the system performs normally on this 2nd partition, we know your primary OS has something in it that is causing problems. If it behaves the same as the primary, we probably have a hardware issue (I doubt this.) If the 2nd system works properly, I would get an external hard drive, clone your boot drive to the external using either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper! (Boot the external clone to make sure it works) Re-partition and Erase your internal drive and do a clean install on your internal. You can then try to migrate your settings from the external at this point.
    Let me know...

  • What is a kernal task ?

In my activitiy monitor, it is showing a kernal task showing a static 84.32mb real memory and 951.51 mb virtual memory being used. Like I said, the memory usage numbers are static.
What is this, and is it normal?

kernel_task is the core, the heart, the nub, the gist, ... the kernel of the operating system. Yes, it is normal.

  • How can I fix kernel task from using 300% of my CPU?

Everytime I disconnect my MacBook Pro from the wall, Kernel Task uses 300% or more of my CPU and stays that way until I connect the power. I've tryed resetting the System Management Controller, restarting the computer, logging in to another account, and deleted all "bad" files (problem files I've found out via Google). Going to Safe Mode does remove this problem, so it's maybe a program error?

The most likely reason for it is that the battery needs to be replaced.

  • Kernel task consumes over 300 %!

    Hi everyone!
Greetings from Sweden, Stockholm (Where its hot, 32 degrees celsius outside today!)
    My second time posting here.
So I have a Macbook Pro from early 2011 that I myself upgraded with 2 8GB Corsair Ram and a year later, a Samsung SSD Evo 500 Gb (as my main, dont have a secondary disk), after some trouble in the beginning with the SSD and 3 reinstallation of Maverick later I got it to work smoothly, now a month later my computer has just started to slow down soo much. Startup time is really fast, maybe 20 seconds, but just browsing the internet or doing basic task takes so much time, its ridiculous. When watching the Activity Monitor I see that kernel task its often at 300 percent, and at one time it was over 500 percent!
Been searching the forum for this problem but it seems like most people dont have the same issue as me and the solution often being to buy more RA,
also the only thing I have for startup is "itunes helper", nothing more, no Cleanmydrive or something like that since I know how much RAM those programs can consume.
I use my Macbook Pro for a lot of heavy audio editing with Logic Pro and Pro Tools, and need it so bad for work.
is there something Ican do? Am a student so if needed I have to buy a new Macbook Pro but my wallet wouldnt like it...
This is my "Etrecheck" report, if someone with a little more knowledge have the time to take alook I would be so thankfull:

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • I have a Kernal Task that is eating my memory it a root user

I upgraded to mavericks and found my mac book pro really sluggish from boot up whenever i try to complete any tasks from using photoshop to safari it takes too long and i get the spinning wheel
I spent a whole afternoon with an apple genius who carried out all the diagnostics he had everything passed the only thing he found was a kernel task it says user is the root
his solution was to re format the disc and re install everything by dragging it back from my time machine back up and checking if the kernel task re appeared in the activity monitor this seemed really time consuming and i am not carrying all my software instillation discs and i had jut done this a month back (though after the re format i used the migration software from my time machine back up to re install everything on my computer i did do it singularly)
please see this is my system

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Kernal Task Usage High - Disk Tab not CPU?

Greetings support community. My mac is running awfully slow. Often the fan gets loud - spinning beach balls - and apps stop responding all the time.
I'm look for some suggestion as I travel outside the US for work regularly and CANNOT risk loosing this MAC just yet. I have yet to attempt to reformat/repair but I know that is the next right step before I commit to buying a new device.
Below is a scan from EtreCheck. Can anyone help me decipher this?
I'm resisting panicing - I know this should be fixable I just need some guidance on where to start. Also see screen shot of activity monitor under disk tab - kernel tasks are using up 2 gbs! That has to be insanely wrong right?
    Problem description:
slow mac - kernel task usage large

So I ran the Disk Repair in safe mode & out of.
Both were very clean. See below.
I'm not sure where to go from here. It was running pretty nicely in safe mode - I didn't try to open a photoshop though which will usually slow up my machine.
But I did open my firefox when I went back out of safe mode and my whole thing froze up immediately as the first operation and required a force quit. UGH
I closed it down - restarted - tried with safari - I can browse (weird though that my airport is dimmed out but I still have full connection to my wifi)
My kernal_task tho seems to be way more in check since I verified disk - but I'm getting some spinning beach balls still and firefox not responded.
    I dont have a....
    Library/StartupItems or
    System/Library/StartupItems
nor do i have a STARTUPitems folder in my private/var/run
    I do have....
Library/LaunchDaemons: should i delete all these? or some?
com.adobefpsaud.plist     I dont store my adobe files in the cloud - is that what this is trying to prompt? should i delete?
    com.adobe.switchboard.plist     ditto?
    com.google.keystone.daenib.plist    huh?
com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper.plist    whats this from office? why is that opening on start? should i delete?
    com.oracle.java.helper-tool.plist     ??
    com.oracle.java.javaupdatehelper.plist    ??
com.wdc.SmartwareDriveService.plist    this is my backup - but I don't run that everyday.
    com.wdc.wDSmartwareServiice.plist     ditto
In my System/Library/LaunchDaemons i have MANY com.apple......prompts - I'm assuming these are not meant to be deleted?
But outside of that there are a few extras (listed below) - should I delete these?
    com.danga.memcached.plist
    com.vix.cron.plist
    exec.plist
    finger.plist
    ftp.plist
    login.plist
    ntalk.plist

    org.cups.cups-Ipd.plist
    org.cups.cupsd.plist

    org.openldap.slapd.plist
    org.postfix.master.plist
    shell.plist
    ssh.plist
    telnet.plist
    tftp.plist
    WHAT ARE THESE?
I think the only things in my other row in my system preferences are
    -Java
    -Perian
    -Flash Player
any more suggestions? thank you so much for your assistance!

  • Kernal task using 998,44 virtual mem

    Hi all,
I am not sure if this is the place to ask...
I have noticed in my activity monitor that the kernal_task takes alot of cpu and virtual ram...
well, the cpu is only 2% but the ram is high.
    or is that normal?

This is normal, the kernel task managed all processes

  • Finder and Kernal tasks using all my Ram

My computer is super slow now, even switching from one folder to another in Finder often takes 3 or 4 seconds. I'm pasting a screen shot from Activity Monitor and the data from an 'etre-check' software scan. Any help much appreciated!!

I suggest removing that antivirus and rebooting.

  • Kernal Task in Mac 10.10.2 using up too much CPU

Is it true that kernel_task could be using too much ram its because I  upgraded from and old OS: as an example from MAVERICS TO YOSEMITE ?  If yes - how do I fix this?

Yes, I am backing up with Time Machine and also an external drive [LaCie].  As I have no other security  programs on my Mac other than what the Mac itself offers - I was backup up to 2 external drives - now real do not see if that is necessary or causing additional problems.   I checked out the internet and conservatively made some adjustments to System Preference  in General  and Privacy.  I deleted and removed from the hard drive files and Applications which I really did not need - then completely deleted them from Trash.  I should have kept a log of what i had done - and certainly will in future particularly if i need to ask for technical assistance.   I started this journey because  that little coloured twirling disk was driving my husband and me crazy and it took forever to open files and programs.  I try to ensure that only those programs that we are using are open.  After use I quit them.  As we both are Seniors but enjoy the Mac and its freedom its important for me to be as informed about what I need to know about troubleshooting the Mac - unfortunately, the Internet has 60 answers for one question - yours, Mr. Davis, has been the most functional and analytical response so far.  If you can bear with us perhaps you can direct us to where we need to go. I will say that after all the tweaks this morning - the system is running better ... although I really cannot say what the specific action were, if any, that made the difference.  I should mention that our internet provider suggested that we weekly  reboot our WiFi connection.  Any assistance or direction you might recommend for future maintenance will be most gratefully appreciated.

  • Kernal task using 1.03GB RAM in Activity Monitor?

    Hello,
I  have a 13inch MBP running Mavericks 10.9.4 with a 2.7 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 500GB HD. I just recently had the machine Factory Reset. The only APP's I've added are PAGES, NUMBERS and KEYNOTE.  When I check the ACTIVITY MONITOR it indicates that out of 16GB of RAM MEMORY, 5.51GB is being used. Usually ACTIVITY MONITOR indicates that as much as 9GB RAM is being used. This MBP is 3 years old and I clearly upgraded the RAM from 4GB (I think) to 16GB. Since this MBP used to run with only 4GB of RAM total; it seems to me that the current amount of memory being used, from 5.51GB up to 9GB out of 16GB total RAM is unusually high. In addition, the above numbers were displayed when only Safari and Activity Monitor are running. Is this normal for Mavericks OSX?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Dennis

I have a 16GB Macbook Pro, and my kernel_task has 1.12GB or RAM,  15.85GB used, split between app memory at 6.67GB, file cache at 7.36GB, and 1.83GB wired.
So what.  My Mac is running fine.  I do not care how RAM is used, as long as I am getting good performance.
Unused RAM is wasted RAM.  My Mac is making sure I get full value from my money.
If you are having an actual performance issue, please describe what you are seeing, what apps you are running at the time, and if you have an anti-malware or Mac cleaner apps running on your system (historical trouble makers).

I recently installed a 1gb stick of ram. Since then, after I use my computer for an hour, the kernal task uses more and more CPU, flatlining at 90%
Any ideas how to fix it? The ram can be found here: http://www.datamem.com/partsthat_fit_list.asp_Q_M_E_PowerBookG4+1%2E67GHz+%28M9969LL%2FA%2915%2E2%22_A_MF_E_Apple_A_C_E

Do you have any suggestions. I'm sure it is not normal. my mac was much faster before and now it takes about a minute to open safari.
Kernal task takes lot of my memory around 900MB.
