Kernel 2.6.18 beyond?

I'm using the beyond 2.6.17 kernel. Is there gonna be a 2.6.18 beyond kernel, or are the improvements in beyond already in 2.6.18 vanilla?
Should I just switch to vanilla?

I'll have a pre release up by the end of the day, I'll give that some testing, and it should be in the repos soon enough.

2.6.19-beyond1pre1, is just a short release, so I can get some testing done while I wait for a few more patches, and so I can do some thorough testing of my own.
2.6.19-beyond1 will be out shortly, and will go to the repos.

    nope, should work fine, i remember seeing this on one of my computers and there were no problems. that said, it shouldnt appear in any future versions.

  • Older 2.6 kernels with ck (or beyond) patchsets don't compile

    Hello! I'm trying to compile 2.6.17 kernel with ck or beyond patchset (i need this one because one of my drivers can be compiled only with 2.6.17 and i really like ck). I can't play with abs because kernel's PKGCONFIG is too complicated for me (and actual probably has small problem when it's necessary to deal with 4 parts kernel names like 2.6.17.7 etc.), if somebody has one working  PKGCONFIG (any 2.6.17 with properly beyond or ck) i can try it, thank you.
    I was trying to deal with my problem by downloading sources from kernel.org (of course they build properly and work) and patching by appropriate patch from beyond or ck's page. But during compilation i always get errors like
    fs/splice.c:1381: error: redefinition of 'link_ipipe_prep'
    fs/splice.c:1302: error: previous definition of 'link_ipipe_prep' was here
    fs/splice.c:1419: error: redefinition of 'link_opipe_prep'
    fs/splice.c:1340: error: previous definition of 'link_opipe_prep' was here
    it isn't of course alway splice.c but it alway errors like that. My friend suggested that it could be problem with gcc4 is it possible? Or does anyone know solution for my problem?
    Big Thanks

    As you haven't been entirely clear about what you're doing, let me outline what I would do in your situation:
    - get the 2.6.17 tarball from kernel.org - that's 2.6.17 ONLY, not 2.6.17.y
    - get the 2.6.17-ck1 patch tarball from http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ … .6.17-ck1/
    - get the corresponding kernel config from cvs.archlinux.org
    - get the corresponding PKGBUILD and associated build files from cvs.archlinux.org (optional - only required if you want to use the Arch Build System)
    - build
    Actually, there may be a shortcut (just occurred to me while typing) - there are a couple of mirrors that archive old versions of Arch packages. They don't do all of them, but you might be lucky. They're listed on the "Downgrading Packages" wiki page.
    Just for curiosity, what driver do you need 2.6.17 for?

  • Kernel-headers and kernel26-beyond out of sync?

    Hello,
    I am using kernel26-beyond (currently at 2.6.19), but every time a vanilla kernel gets upgraded, I get kernel-headers upgraded also (currently at 2.6.20). I wonder if wouldn't be better if there was different kernel-headers-beyond package for kernel26-beyond kernels? I am just afraid I could have problems while compiling some programs while vanilla and beyond variants of kernel are out of sync.
    I imagine this is valid for other variants of kernels as well.
    Another solution would be to release all the kernel variants at the same time, but I don;'t know if it would be possible.

    yes, and glibc will be recompiled when the kernel headers are updated, so you're able to upgrade safely.
    You can use any kernel you like (within reason), it doesnt have to match the kernel-headers version.

  • Kernel 2.6.20 beyond

    Maybe the mantainer of the beyond-patched kernel didn't see the patchset for 2.6.20 has been released 1 month ago (it isn't linked on the project homepage): http://iphitus.loudas.com/beyond/2.6.20/2.6.20-beyond1/
    This is the only kernel not updated to 2.6.20 (default, ck, suspend2 etc. are all updated).

    Well... on the package page ( http://www.archlinux.org/packages/10862/ ) I read:
    James Rayner
    and there isn't any e-mail address to contact him (so I opened this thread). And there isn't any "I'm iphitus" writing. I couldn't know that... now I know that.
    I've seen on the beyond project homepage
    "For the latest release, please check http://iphitus.loudas.com/beyond/ until I fix the scripts behind this site."
    so I checked and I found the 2.6.20 patchset...... these are the facts.

  • [Solved] Kernel 2.6.17-beyond, suspend2 and raid swap.

    Hi all,
    I'm using the 2.6.17-beyond kernel (x86-64) and would like to resume with suspend2.
    My root and swap are parititions are software raids and this seems to cause some undesired behaviour.
    The resume (hook?) loads before the software raids are assembled durring boot. That mean it can't find / (/dev/mdX) or swap (/dev/mdY), hence I can't resume and it fallbacks to a normal boot.
    So, is there a way to force the raids devices to assemble before the resume?
    Some info from mkinitcpio.conf:
    MODULES="sd_mod sata_sil sata_nv raid0 raid1 ext3 reiserfs"
    HOOKS="base udev resume"
    grub.conf
    [code]
    kernel /vmlinuz26beyond root=/dev/md2 ro md=2,/dev/sda2,/dev/sdb2  md=6,/dev/sda6,/dev/sdb6 resume2=swap:/dev/md6
    [code]
    Thanks in advance,
    Nicholai

    That did the trick. Suspend2 works like a charm.
    Thanks for the quick reply.

  • Kernel26-beyond + ndiswrapper + wpa_supplicant [solved]

    Hello!
    A few problems with kernel-2.6.16-beyond and my network profile (ndiswrapper plus wpa2-psk).
    Here we go:
    - Running Arch 0.7.2, uptodate with current and extra repos.
    - Installed kernel26beyond package and ndiswrapper-beyond.
       kernel26beyond version: 2.6.16.beyond4.1-1
       Ndiswrapper-beyond version: 1.16-1
    - Edited the grub configuration, adding the new kernel:
    title Arch Linux Beyond
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /vmlinuz26beyond root=/dev/hda5 ro video=vesafb:ywrap,1280x800-16@60
    initrd /initramfs-beyond.img
    - Reboot to test the new kernel.
    It seems the wifi profile doesn't start. Ok, let's see...
    My wifi profile works OK with stock Arch kernel, but after the installation of kernel26 beyond the wpa socket directory (/var/run/wpa_supplicant) has dissapeared.
    No problem, created it again and restart the network. Still no luck.
    ndiswrapper-beyond seems to work fine:
    $ ndiswrapper -l
    bcmwl5 driver installed, hardware present
    dmesg output:
    ndiswrapper version 1.16 loaded (preempt=yes,smp=yes)
    ndiswrapper: driver bcmwl5 (Broadcom,05/26/2005, 3.120.27.0) loaded
    ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:06:02.0[A] -> GSI 21 (level, low) -> IRQ 22
    ndiswrapper: using irq 22
    wlan0: vendor: ''
    wlan0: ndiswrapper ethernet device 00:14:a5:4e:11:27 using driver bcmwl5, 14E4:4319.5.conf
    wlan0: encryption modes supported: WEP; TKIP with WPA, WPA2, WPA2PSK; AES/CCMP with WPA, WPA2, WPA2PSK
    The wpa_supplicant configuration works fine with stock kernel:
    $ cat /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
    ap_scan=1
    network={
    ssid="myssid"
    proto=RSN
    key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
    pairwise=TKIP
    group=TKIP
    #psk="blah"
    psk=encrypted blah
    I have tried adding ndiswrapper to the modules array in /etc/rc.conf, the network doesn't start.
    Later I have changed the file /etc/mkinitramfs.conf and generated a new initramfs-beyond.img, trying to enable ndiswrapper here and/or USB subsystem support, but the result was the same.
    The *ONLY* solution I have found is booting the system with the beyond kernel, wait to the network init script to fail (it seems a dhcp timeout), log into the system and execute the following:
    # killall wpa_supplicant
    # /etc/rc.d/network restart
    Any idea about why I have to kill wpa_supplicant to get the wifi working with it? As I said, this problem does't exist with the stock kernel, and I don't see any errors reported by wpa_supplicant.
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    miausX

    Thanks for your reply, Phrodo_00.
    I think it is using the correct ndiswrapper module (beyond).
    Looking at the modinfo output:
    $ modinfo ndiswrapper
    filename: /lib/modules/2.6.16-beyond/misc/ndiswrapper.ko
    license: GPL
    version: 1.16
    description: NDIS wrapper driver
    Maybe this problem is related to the execution order of the commands (modprobe ndiswrapper, wpa_supplicant, dhcpcd) during boot.
    Everything works fine after killing wpa_supplicant and restarting the network, the ndiswrapper module is loaded, wpa_suplicant is running as a daemon, etc.
    $ ps -ef | grep wpa
    root 4262 1 0 10:12 ? 00:00:00 wpa_supplicant -wB -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -D wext
    $ ps -ef | grep dhcp
    root 4274 1 0 10:12 ? 00:00:00 dhcpcd -t 30 -h portatil wlan0
    $ lsmod | grep ndis
    ndiswrapper 145004 0

    No, becouse of udev. The old kernel is from the 0.7 install cd.
    Now I know what I've missed.

    mkinitramfs' configuration options are stored in /etc/mkinitramfs.conf, some of which are listed above.
    To build an initramfs run:
    mkinitramfs kernel=2.6.16-beyond
    I should do the same with archck? Am I right? Ok, but how to create it without booting arch? I can use live-cd. Mounting the disc and building initramfs for archck on live-cd will be ok?

    islamguide.com wrote:Is there any problem with installing multiple kernels and nvidia drivers side by side?
    None at all, as long as you make sure you have the matching nvidia package for each kernel package e.g. nvidia-suspend2 in this case.
    islamguide.com wrote:1) I have to /etc/rc.d/network restart else there's no internet.
    Read hibernate -h carefully, and edit /etc/hibernate/hibernate.conf accordingly. You can incorporate any daemon restarts of that sort into the overall suspend/resume process - look for the StopServices/StartServices directives.
    FUBAR wrote:Did you have more luck with suspend2 using the -suspend2 kernel than with the -beyond kernel?
    You're saying that it works fine with beyond, but not with suspend2? Using the same config?

  • Problem installing Oracle 9.2 on RedHat Linux 7.1 and 9.0

    Hi everyone,
    As the subject line says, I tried installing Oracle 9.2 on
    RedHat Linux 7.1 and 9.0, strictly following instructions
    written by Werner Puschitz
    (http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle9i.shtml). Both
    attempts failed with identical symptoms:
    - the installer asks for Disk 2
    - after the disk is inserted, it hangs. It turns out that
    kernel is writing messages similar to these in
    /var/log/messages:
    Jun 16 02:45:19 boston kernel: 16:00: rw=0, want=317696, limit=149920
    Jun 16 02:45:19 boston kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
    Unless interrupted, this continues until the /tmp filesystem gets full.
    Has anyone experienced this? I haven't been able to find
    an explanation so far.
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Ljubomir Buturovic

    Providing a thread-bare configuration of your machine on which you are trying to install Oracle on Linux (and mind you - which kernel/distro, coz that's important) would definitely help you elicit more responses to your messages.

    I try reinstaling ipw3945ucode, downraging ipw3945-beyond & ipw3945d with no resault .
    I even tryied downraging udev, but then when i turned the laptop's wifi switch on the laptop compeletely freezed  :shock: ! i had to shutdown it.
    I'm currently having:

  • [solved] X11 desaster after todays update!

    Hi!
    I have some big problem after todays update of my system. I just installed the new Kernel 2.6.19-beyond (I need this one because of my reiser4 partitions) and rebuild the nvidia module for it. After the usual restart I'm no longer able to start KDM or KDE at all. Whenever I want to start KDE the either by using kdm or startx my computer starts working for about 5 seconds, the screen starts to switch as usual, but than I get thrown back to the console, having a blank screen laft and the computer doesn't react anymore. :shock:
    It also stops working immediately and I only can push trhe reset button. This is some fatal problem since I have lots of work that needs to be done. I also switched the xorg.conf to the nv or vesa module but still the same thing happens. I also rebuild the beyond kernel but the same thing.
    So can anybody help me with this. I need to get my work done and couldn't find any answer to this. This is very urgent since I already have a schedule that is almost out of control.
    Thanks a lot!

    Thanks for the advice. But I usually delete the cache after a while, so it just happened that I did this a couple of days ago so I don't have the previous kernel in there.
    About the Xorg.0.log, I already checked it for any error or warning by using
    more /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep WW
    and
    more /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
    but there's nothing in there that indicates any problem. Both results don't show any warning or error. Besides that I didn't change the xorg.conf after the update and it worked before....
    But thanks anyway for trying to help me out. Do you (or anybody else here) have another idea that I might have not thought of?
    So I'm still stuck on this and my working clock is ticking.
    I really don't have any clue what this might cause.  :?
    Thanks!

  • Wireless zd1211 bug

    Driver is zd1211. Problem seen in these posts:

    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=30873
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=31178
    Affects 2.6.20.X kernel series.
    I have the same issue (my wireless card seems not to be usable through driver while driver is correctly loaded) and more.
    In kernel 2.6.19-beyond and 2.6.19-suspend2 I can't associate my access point to the card:
    iwconfig wlan0 essid MYESSID ap XX:XX:XX:XX
    or
    iwconfig wlan0 essid MYESSID ap any
    gives:
    Access point:  Not Associated
    In the past (1 or 2 months ago) I used my card correctly.
    Nowadays I tried different configurations of my network to solve issue: no hope. Actually my ap is opened without encryption with dhcp (yes... configuration "kill my net if you want!!!") and no changes.
    So problem IS NOT:
    - wpa
    - access point configuration
    - driver loading
    - netcfg
    - dhcp
    I suspect some issue between iwconfig and driver. With wifi-radar output is:
    "wlan0: interface does not support scanning"
    but if I try I CAN'T associate ap manually either.
    Any idea on how to manage this issue?

    Hi guys,
    I got a strange problem. I HAD a working tv-out with my beyond kernel. I updated my system:
    starting full system upgrade
    [06/08/06 21:41] removed nvidia (1.0.8178-16)
    [06/08/06 21:42] upgraded codecs (20050412-2 -> 20060501-3)

    [06/08/06 21:42] installed nvidia-utils (1.0.8762-4)
    [06/08/06 21:46] installed nvidia-beyond (1.0.8762-1)
    After that I can not use my sweet tv-out anymore. As u can see I have used nvidia driver with my beyond kernel so I installed the nvidia-beyond instead.
    Can some one tell me what went wrong??

    Well if u mean if I removed the old nvidia driver then yes. I am currently having two kernels one is my beyond and the other is the standard one. So for the moment I am running beyond kernel with beyond nvidia....and I also got nvidia-utils installed since the driver wants it. I got dual boot I started up windows and  in that OS my tv-out is working. Maybe I should totaly remove the old kernel and mkinitrd..dunno if that will fix my prob. Ohh..I have rebooted after wards ...  One strange thing is that I booted up with my old kernel and installed nvidia driver as well. To see if I could get my tv out back. At that point I had both drivers installed, maybe they did a conflict..I will reinstall all nvidia drivers including utils and only have beyond driver...I got a feeling that my driver mess things up totaly.
