Kernel 2.6.27 update, laptop display brightness problem.
After the update to kernel 2.6.27 the display brightness resets to the highest level during the system startup. It resets to highest value somewhere during the udev processing. There is obviously some difference with display brightness handling because now I have in GNOME display of brightness level while changing (something like volume changing with multimedia keys). The brightness also resets to highest randomly while working in GNOME so I need to adjust it sveral times.
My laptop is HP nx7400. I have Arch64 installed. Also the problem appears on my brother's HP nx7300, almost same hardware.
Hi peart.
I am not kernel programmer, but I have analyzed the code of the ACPI video driver and the problematic patch. I have removed the check which sets the brightness to max but I can't compile because of not enough space to compile the kernel :S. Would you be so kind to compile the modified file and upload a compiled moduel to test.
I have following explanation for my modification:
Here http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/g … 29c1ba8055 we can see that there is added check if ACPI BQC object exists. If the object doesn't exist then the brightness is set to max, which obviously is the problem with our laptops because the BQC object is optional. If we revert the patch completly the BCQ check is moved to the outter if-structure and the execution skips whole part, where the backlight device is registered.
My modification is that I removed the check for BCQ object and removed the part where it sets the backlight to max. As far as I can see acpi_video_get_brightness(device->backlight) can be called without prior checking of BCQ object existance, because acpi_video_get_brightness then calls acpi_video_device_lcd_get_level_current which gets the current brightness level. acpi_video_device_lcd_get_level_current checks if BCQ object exists and handles it properly, as far as I can see.

IMac 27' year 2010 display brightness problem
Hi
Stumble this problem, hoping someone can tell me if it was the victim and possibly solved as:
I have an iMac 27 'year 2010 i5 processor.
From what month the display has brightness drops when used in brightness by a factor between 1 and 6.
The problem occurs for a split second and every 30 minutes.
If I keep the brightness by a factor greater than 6, there is the problem.
How can I fix it without bringing in assistance?
I have the warranty expired and I have no money for repair.
thanksWhat is the model of your LCD display under the "iMac color profile"?

I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.53GHz Mid2009.. updated to Lion which is now 10.7.3 build 11D50b... when I close lid and connect to Cinema Display, display will not activate when keyboard/mouse used... disconnect display, open lid and laptop display will not activate... only way out is hold power button. Worked fine before Lion update. Any Advice?
Thanks very much Coander15... I've printed the doc you pointed me towards and I'll run through it.. hoping it helps!
Before I installed Lion I simply hit any key on the keyboard or clicked the mouse...
The keyboard is USB (usually connected to monitor which is connected to laptop... have tried direct connect to laptop as well with no luck) and mouse is USB wireless to one of those tiny plug in's... have tried direct connect USb mouse as well with no luck.
I could plug the closed/sleeping laptop into the monitor and unplug from the monitor without incident all day/night... always worked fine.
Had heard something about this happening w/ Lion but went ahead anyway.
Oh well...
Hoping your pointer helps... will let you know how it turns out. Thanks very much for responding!!! -
Lost display brightness - security update 7.0.6
2/24/2014 Just updated iPhone 5 with latest security update and display lost full brightness after update. Difficult to see and read screen in bright daylight. Contacted Tech support, checked for auto brightness control, yes functions, but phone lost full brightness after update.
Glitch occurred on 3 different iPhone 5s. Any suggestions as restoring to old opsys, not possible?Sorry the question, does Apple have a fix for solving the issue of "loss of display brightness", due to update?
Not restoring old op system. Problem occurred on 3 phones. Any helpful solutions would be appreciated. -
Laptop mode tools problem with kernel 3.0
today I just updated the system and my laptop runs dramatically hotter after that. I read the archwiki, it does talk about the laptop mode tools problem with kernel 3.0 but when I opened the file /usr/sbin/laptop_mode, the lines which the wiki mentions are not there. Does anyone here have the same problem and can you offer the solution?
Here is my /usr/sbin/laptop_mode

# This is a 2 phase locking approach. LMT_REQ_LOCK is the outer lock and LMT_INVOC_LOCK is the inner lock
# We take this approach to ensure the scenario that, "At any point when an event occurs (AC/BATT), the
# kernel can generate multiple events spanning over a couple of events. The first event is honored and
# lmt executes. If the last event triggered at the 9th second, there is a fair chance that a good amount
# of state change would have occured in the OS, to honor that state, we keep an outer lock (LMT_REQ_LOCK)
# handy, so that those changes can also be applied and not forgotten.
# Workflow:
# Event-1 is generated and lmt executes (lmt runtime could span 5-10 seconds)
# At seventh second, 4 events generate. But Event-1 is still running.
# We don't want to discard all the remaining 4 events, but at least honor 1 so that we can act to the changes

Regarding your heat problem; is there any other thing you use to cut down power usage (from AUR maybe)? I use acpi_call from AUR had to edit lines there aswell, but it should be updated by now. -
(SOLVED) Display brightness disappeared from Power Options in Vista, Lenovo G530
Hello board,
My system Lenovo G530 product ID 444638U
I used to be able to adjust display brightness in Vista from Control Panel > Power Options. I could set how bright when on battery and how bright when on AC. Also, it used to be that when I unplugged power cable it would automatically adjust my brightness according to those settings. Now, nothing happens when I unplug power cable, not even a beep.
Possible problem is as follows, but let's keep an open mind to other things as well. I spilled beer on keyboard recently. ONLY on keyboard I am sure. I replaced keyboard with something that fits but something that isn't made for my laptop, has different arrangement of Fn+ keys. Basically ever since the beer accident and ever since I replaced keyboard I had this brightness issue.
Please help me solve this.
-Alex
Solved!
Go to Solution.I solved this problem..
Solution is to upgrade the BIOS to latest version. I am not sure actually whether latest BIOS had the needed fix or not, or it was just the process of updating the BIOS that solved this issue. But no doubt, after flashing the BIOS, display brightness function reappeared! -
Attaching external monitor resets laptop display scale
Sometimes when I connect my Thunderbolt monitor to my Macbook the laptop display resets back to no scaling. This ***** because I then have to change it back and fix all my windows. This happens maybe 15% of the time; it's happened many times now.
I've also had one case where on restart the laptop reset the scale. It was not connected to the external monitor when that happened.
Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?Hi there , Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I see that you wanted to know if there was a way to hook your Spectre X360 up to an External Monitor and be able to close the lid to your Notebook without it going to sleep. I did some research on this for you also. In Power Options, Choose what closing the lid does, you should have an option that says "Do nothing". Set it to "Do Nothing". Here is a video for you this video explains how to change the Power Option settings to "Do Nothing". If you do not see this option, please do all of your driver updates either with the HP Driver's website for your specific Spectre X36 Notebook, or you can do them using the HP Support Assistant. You can change the Power Settings when on battery and when plugged in directly. You could change the settings when you do not have an external monitor plugged in to sleep when the lid is closed. Thank you for writing on the HP Support Forums! Have a great day!

Default Display brightness is too high.
Hi, i am using latest B2G 2.2 [2014-10-08, flame phone]
Default display brightness almost 90%,
Every time i update firmware, i set this value to 10%.
i think this value is too high, it consume more battery.Hi, my point is default value is too high,
it affect battery life.
user some time forget set this value,
so i think this value should be changed by default.
now, i set this value to 0%
indoor, i can see my flame screen clearly with 0% -
X230 display brightness changes automatically
Hi,
I have a problem when I'm using my X230 from battery: every know and then the display brightness changes, it gets lower (even without any user activity). Also it seems that the color profile also changes, colors look washed out. After few minutes or sometimes seconds, it goes back to normal. However, I have this issue quite often.
Is there a solution? Is it something to do with my power settings?
Thank you.

Cannot adjust display brightness via F-keys nor Preferences
After updating Mavericks to 10.9.4, I cannot adjust the display brightness. Using the F1-2 keys will show the brightness icon that usually pops up. However, it's stuck and nothing happens when I press either F1 or F2 (the brightness keys).
I tried going into Preferences and adjust the brightness from there. "Automatically adjust brightness" is not checked and when I drag the slider, it slides back to where it initially was.
How can I fix this problem?

[SOLVED] Can't change laptop screen brightness.
I'm using GNOME and can't seem to change my laptop screen brightness. The slider in settings will work by changing the value in intel_backlight between 0 and 4882 but the actual brightness of the screen will not change.
If I use the kernel line acpi_video = vendor all it does is create another interface called dell_backlight alongside intel_backlight which changes from 0 to 15 by changing the slider or pressing fn + f5 and fn + f4.
I have nouveau and intel graphics drivers installed and I'm running arch on a Dell XPS15 (L521x).
Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: Solved this by adding the kernel parameter video.use_native_backlight=0

Have you tried this kernel parameter:
video.use_native_backlight=1

Yes I have tried this, unfortunately GDM will not start if this is enabled. -
Hello,
Automatic display brightness adjusting on my mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro somehow gets stuck. For example, when I work in bright room and put the computer to sleep (close the lid) the brightness level remains high when I wake the computer in darker ambience. The same happens in opposite direction, when the computer goes to sleep in darker room and wake in brighter, the screen brightness remains at low settings. Is there a way to reset the system to default brightness settings? I was satisfied with default behavior of automatic illumination and all these problems arise after I manually adjusted brightness using F1-F2 keys. Otherwise, illumination adjustments work when I cover the sensor. I can notice screen going darker or lighter when room lighting conditions change.
I tried resetting SMC, but it didn't fix the problem. Do you have any suggestions?

OPTION to adjust display brightness on nokia asha ...
Hi NOKIA Representative,
Please provide the support and option to adjust display brightness on NOKIA ASHA 200 in the next software update. (I have NOKIA 200 V11.56 showing manfacturing date 26-03-12).
Adjustment of display brightness is very basic and important feature in any phone, how come NOKIA forgot it in this model (NOKIA ASHA 200) ??
Thanks,
Raven777The manual display brightness option should be added to the device in the 11.81 (or newer) SW updates - so try updating your phone SW.

T440s Turn off auto display brightness
I'm trying to turn off the auto brightness on my T440 but nothing I found so far is working.
I edited all power plans and it turned off the Auto display brightness in windows 8.1, and i also disabled the "Display Power Saving Technology" in the graphics control panel under Power.
It's dimming even with cable plugged in. If the screen consists of mostly black images, it dims.. if there is white, it brightens.
Any help how I could fix this is appreciated! I have latest everything, all drivers, etc. I have latest System Update 5 update manager which downloaded and installed everything possible.I seem to have fixed it.. but not sure what it was, I did a few things. I did another update which downloaded a Dependency manager which was critical.. and I also did a safe mode start which failed to start and nearly bricked the machine.. only a CD was able to revive the boot process.. it would boot to a blank screen with no start options even available.

B540P Display brightness not adjustable
Hello,
i have just bought the Lenovo B540P VDZ9EGE (i5, GT650M, Windows 8 64bit)) and i have a problem. I can not change the screen brightness, neither with touch on the button of the screen, nor in Windows 8. In Windows 8 it says: not available and I can not click on it. The screen brightness is always on the highest setting I think. It would be nice, if you could help me. Thank you very much. I apologize for my english.hi BK86,
If you have the IdeaCentre™ B540p (3363) with the NVIDIA® GeForce® GT650M, can you try to :
1. Update the display driver to GeForce 314.07 DriverVersion 314.07 - WHQL from the nvidia website.
2. Run Windows Update to get the latest patch and bug fixes.
After doing the steps above, try to press the brightness Up or Down button on the LCD panel
