Kernel 2.6.27 upgrade hell

Hi, the subject it's maybe a little too much dramatic but I'm being spending a lot of time with this "smooth" upgrade.
Since I upgraded the kernel I was forced to:
- Reinstall ATI drivers -> Reconfigure my xorg.conf for dual head
- Rebuild vbox modules
- Find out that my speaker was bothering all the time because I was supposed to add !snd_pcsp in my /etc/rc.conf
At this time I couldn't manage to get the sound working.
As I said before the snd_pcsp has been conveniently blacklisted.
My device:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
My modules:
MODULES=(e1000e slhc snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-hda-intel soundcore fuse loop vboxdrv fglrx !pcspkr !snd_pcsp)
I'm beginning to be a little bit bored of fix these small annoying things, I prefer to spend time trying to improve my system rather to trying to fix it after an upgrade... At this time I'm seriously considering not to run "pacman -Su" anymore
Hehehe, just tired. I appreciate any help on this one.
Thanks.
Derek

Are you sure this modules: snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-hda-intel soundcore are necessary? I thought ALSA is built into the kernel smile
I don't really know, I kept adding drivers until it worked the first time
Are you using ATI or FGLRX driver?
I already posted the modules list in rc.conf, it seems to be a fglrx there...
Maybe post your xorg.conf?
My X it's working fine now... It's just the sound.
OK, but in Gnome you also have some kind of utility for sound-devices. What does it tell you?
That in Gnome I also have some kind of utility for sound-devices... Hehe, just kidding.... Really, what are you truying to say? I tested all the devices which appeeares in Gnome sound preferences...
And how does your modules line look in rc.conf?
The list is in my first post.
I had to blacklist two modules: !pcspkr !snd-pcsp
The list is in my first post.
Thank you all for your interest... but I really miss my sound

  • Multiple Kernel Panics after Mavericks Upgrade

I've been getting kernel panics (shut downs and restarts suddenly) weekly (haven't resolved this yet).
I upgraded my Macbook Pro mid 2010 15inch Snow leopard to OS X Mavericks
Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks OS X, I've been getting kernel panics every 5 minutes.
It's frustrating, stressful and affecting my studies!
    Please help me.
I'm in the middle of my exam period so I can't go out and pay a visit to the Genius bar.
Can anyone help me or suggest what the underlying problem is?
I also want to know why I've been getting frequent kernel panics prior to upgrading to Mavericks as well.
Here's the panic log, if it helps!
    Thanks!

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

    Safe Mode - About http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
    Repair disk permissions:
Boot in recover mode (Boot - Command-R)
    Run Disk Utility
Select your system drive (Macintosh HD).
    Click on Repair Disk Permissions.
While you are there repair the disk as well:
    Click on Repair Disk.
    Restart.
    If all else fails:
If Mavericks was installed on a system with an unhealthy filesystem it can crash often.
Backup your data and reinstall Mavericks.
    From Kappy:
    Re-download and reinstall Mavericks.
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Mavericks: Select Reinstall Mavericks and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Kernel 2.6.25 upgrade = MadWifi: unable to attach hardware [SOLVED]

    Hello,
After I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.25 on my laptop with an Atheros AR242x, which I use normally use MadWifi with, stopped working. I am unable to get any wifi0 or ath0 device to show up in ifconfig. The most descriptive error I could pull up was "MadWifi: unable to attach hardware: 'Hardware didn't respond as expected' (HAL status 3)" out of dmesg, which you can see below. It was suggested in the IRC channel I compile MadWifi from testing out of abs which I did but it didn't seem to change anything.

Thanks, I'll add it to my collection.
I expect you blacklisted ath5k, right? Better the devil you know and all that, but I would give ath5k a try sometime. It's in mainline, and will eventually replace madwifi altogether.
Yes I did, I eventually will have to go to ath5k but currently madwifi works without a problem so I see no real reason to move over at the moment. In other words, I'll let someone else be the beta tester on that project

  • Multiple kernel panic errors after upgrading to snow leopard 10.6.8 on my MacBook Pro.

After upgrading to 10.6.8, I almost immediately began experiencing multiple random kernel panic errors.  I reinstalled the operating system that came with my notebook from the cd (10.6?) and the problem went away.  I upgraded again to 10.6.8 and again began experiencing the same error.  I have since gone back and installed the operating syatem from the cd and then upgraded to 10.6.7.  I have not had a single kernel panic error since, but I would like to upgrade to 10.6.8 so that I can install Lion when it is avaialable.  Any thoughts as to how I can do this without experiencing all of the accompanying kernel panic errors?

Thank you.  The log is below:

  • Internet kernel panics since Tiger upgrade

Last Friday (9/9) I upgraded my eMac from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.2, and added memory (purchased from Apple), increasing from 256 to 768 MB. Since then I have experienced kernel panics four times while connected to the Internet (Safari) via built-in cable modem (I use dial-up, 56k modem). Anyway, I think it's a kernel panic-- gray screen descends and says I must restart computer using power button; when I restart, message appears saying: "The computer was restarted after MAC OS X quit unexpectedly." On a few other occasions, my modem is disconnecting and I have to dial up again. Anyone have any ideas what might be going on and what I can do to solve the problem?

JMVP: I did update Safari; as far as Java, I was downloading update via my dial-up with 56k modem; with only about 7 minutes remaining (after a nearly two-hour download) the modem disconnected, so I have to start from scratch tomorrow. The install disk for Tiger was for 10.4, then I used Software Update to download 10.4.2 Combo Updater and did permissions repair.
Someone at my office suggested that perhaps the newly-installed memory module is defective; I guess that's a possibility, but my guess is that the odds are small that Apple would ship a defective module (or am I naive?) Guess my first step will be to remove the new module and see if computer runs smoothly. I hope it does; at least I'll know what the problem is. I fear, however, problems will persist and I'll be back to Square 1.
One other thing, I noticed that since Tiger/memory installation, when I put the computer to sleep a small but very bright flash of light is emitted in the center of the screen just as computer enters sleep mode. I'm certain this never used to occur. Wonder what that's all about.

  • Kernel extension problem after upgrade form 10.5.8 to 10.7

    Dear Experts,
I was trying to prepare t show my students in the next term building MAC OS X "kernrl modules"
next to Linux kernel modules in the same way via compiling directly form source
While using MAC OS 10.5.8  then evereything in the
    http://unixjunkie.blogspot.com/2006/12/kernel-extension-by-hand.html
    worked well
But was to buy 10.6.3 in the last available MAC BOX Set in our conutry yesterday  Using this Ibundlw I was to upgrade to the MAC OS X 10.7 Lion.  Then I was not able to insert this kerne; extenion and I was unable to find any source about it except that since 10.6 there were changes in the system of producing kernel extension with no details.
    My outputs
    sudo kextload -verbose 6 ./MojKext.kext/
    Password:
Kext user-space log filter changed from 0xff2 to 0xfff.
Kext kernel-space log filter changed from 0xff2 to 0xfff.
    Requesting load of /Users/peto/Documents/kext2/MojKext.kext.
/Users/peto/Documents/kext2/MojKext.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8).
    sudo kextutil -nt MojKext.kext
No kernel file specified; using running kernel for linking.
kxld[com.apple.filesystems.MojKext]: The Mach-O filetype 0x1 is not supported on the target architecture.
    Link failed (error code 5).
Check library declarations for your kext with kextlibs(8).
    sudo kextlibs MojKext.kext -all-symbols
    For all architectures:
        No libraries found.
    For x86_64:
0 symbol found in one library kext each.
This is beacuse I was removed printf from the source.
Is there anybody who is able to get me some informations/documentation, how to build kernel extensions, please?
    Thank you for any help
I look forward hearing from you
    Yours faitfully
    Peter Fodrek

I think at a minimum you'll need to get Xcode 4.1 for use with Lion. It's free from the App Store.
And Kappy is right, the developer forums are more likely to be of help.

  • Mac OS Lion Kernel Panic after RAM upgrade

    Hi everyone.
Yestarday I upgraded RAM of my MBP from 4GB to 8GB. Note 4GB wasn't native, when I bought MBP it had 2GB.
Both RAM (2x2GB and 2x4GB) is Samsung.
For last day I had 3 Kernel Panic!!! Never got it BEFORE.
I run memory test and it showed that RAM is OK.
There is a log of KP:

  • [Solved]no sound after suspend/resume after kernel 3.9.2 upgrade

I don't know  what to provide to help solve this problem. Leave me messages.Thank you!

    I got mine working!
First I commented out the module parameter from my /etc/modprobe.d//intel-hda-audio.conf:
    #options snd-hda-intel model=dell-eq
Since it works without that now, I will probably remove the file.
Next, I went into alsamixer, and noticed a couple items not there before, turned down low:
"Speaker", and two "HeadPhone" mixers, both turned down almost off.  I turned up the volume on the speaker, and was able to get sound from the speakers.   The same worked for the headphone entries (I have two headphone jacks).
After I did this, it works better than before because I used to only have one working headphone jack.
Also, I confirmed sound is still working after suspend/resume for me.
Hopefully this will help one of you.
Thanks, the problem has been resolved by downgrade.
Sound is absolutely normal before I suspend/resume my system,  volume is normal, not too large, not too little. But there's no sound at all after resume it .  I guess it's probably to have something to do with our audio card - HDA intel,  my computer is also a dell laptop( dell 1420 , 2007/2008, really old ).
My advice is : don't upgrade to kernel 3.9.2 ,it's an odd version( odd version is not stable).

  • Kernel 2.24.23 upgrade kills nvidia support

please add nvidia support to the .23 release
and place a notice that users will have to edit
    /etc/X11/XF86config
    and change
    Driver "nvidia"
    to
    Driver "nv"
    to allow X to run

Edit: First reboot after kernel upgrade or you will get errors from nvidia-installer. BTW nvidia-installer writes log in /var/log/nvidia-installer.log
It can be usefull sometimes :-)
Reinstalling nvidia drivers shoud work. If you deleted the original nvidia driver file you can download it with (it's always a good idea to have wget and links installed):
    wget http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-4496/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
    and than:
    export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=true
    sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
No changes in XF86Config are necessary.

I don't see any obvious causes in your crash log so my guess is it's hardware. The most common item is RAM which could be:
    1. Incorrect RAM (did you upgrade recently?)
    2. Failed RAM, yes it does fail!
    3. Unseated RAM, remove it and reseat firmly.
To test for RAM I'd recommend downloading Rember from:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15837/rember
I would also recommend studying Kernel Panics, Tutorial: Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panics & About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages.
    Good luck locating it.

  • Upgrade hell nokia n8 to belle

    Hi
just about had enough of Nokia,  My Wifes n8 was working perfectly no problems but I made the mistake of upgrading via the suite to belle.
Now texts are not automaticaly sent the y are marked as waiting and left in the out box. She manualy has to go into the out box and send them.
Every time she turns the phone on it asks for a security code which we do not know, ok putting in 12345 gets it working but it is beyond a joke.
Try a factory restore wonderful except the upgrade has lost /changed the security code, five trys and I'm out
Thought I'd go back to the original software but no!! not possible phone needs to go to a Nokia Support centre.
One phone call, a heart attack  and breathing fire later... Yes they can do that for around £90
So I have to pay to fix Nokia s problem.
Am I the only person to find this laughable??? Ok the phone is not on contract and is probably out of warranty but it is Nokia software that broke the phone?
Apart from a hammer does anyone have any ideas?
    thanks
    Ian

    @jrguzman
Can you remember what error message was in more detail? Was it "cannot authenticate the phone" or something different? Have had no issues using Windows 7 & 8 Pro 64 bit to update devices using this application.
Happy to have helped forum with a Support Ratio = 42.5

this is new installation of cisco MSE 7.4
    please any advice

    Hi,
I would never recommend doing an OS upgrade of a domain controller.
    The preffered method is to:
    1. Build a new 2012 R2 Server
    2. Install the Domain Controller role
    3. Promote the server to a domain controller - this will extend the schema of your AD to support 2012 - whilst generally fairly safe to do ensure you have relevant backups in place for your domain / forest
    4. Transfer FSMO roles to your new 2012 DC
You can then go ahead and demote the 2008 DC, rebuild it to 2012, and re-promote it do a DC again. Keep doing this for all your DC's
Also you would need to upgrade your exchange first as Exchange 2003 isn't supported with 2012 domain controllers.

  • Unusual problem in kernel upgrade in grub UUID

FWIW ::grub wiki shows a forward slash in the grub line for UUID at the beginning of the UUID data.
The grub generated by the new kernel linux-3.0-1 inserts an equals sign.  This user is not aware if all downloads provide this difference.
With the equals sign, my UUID was not recognized for the root partition.
After inserting the forward slash, the system booted correctly into kde desktop.
This change was necessary for both arch linux boot and fallback boot.
I also had to change the grub menu.lst kernel line to make it permanent and the same for the fallback kernel line in grub menu.lst.
With the equals sign in the grub kernel line my boots produced an error message::::unable to determine major-minor number of root device.......
Perhaps this info will help others in upgrading .
    EDIT:  My system is x86_64

    Hi Shiva,
You may refer SAP Notes 19466 and 684106, which tells you procedure to download and implement latest Kernel patch levels.
You can check whether your kernel patch level is upgraded or not, following below procedure.
System--> status > other Kernel info> Patche level
    or
    Transaction SM50> Processes> Process info-->Patch Level.
Coming to next question, you  can find whether kernel is 32 bit or 64 bit, using the platform ID.
You  can find this platform ID in your system,
    system--> status.
Now relate this Platform to SAP Note 146289, where you can find the correct bit of your kernel.
If you need any other information, please reply me.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Pavan Kumar Gali.

    pacaur -Su -a
    pacaur -Syu
I keep getting the error 'no results found for dependencies)'
    Here an example output:
    [ ~ ]$ pacaur -Syu
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    core is up to date
    extra is up to date
    community is up to date

    :: zfs-git: requires linux=3.17.6-1
    :: Starting AUR upgrade...
    :: resolving dependencies...
:: no results found for dependencies)
As seen in this example, the system upgrade is failed due to two kernel packages which require the previous kernel version.
I wonder, does the AUR upgrade fails after the failed system upgrade because of new spl-git and zfs-git packages require the new kernel version? And the message ":: no results found for dependencies)" is caused by this?
It seems there is a kind of a circular dependency in this case - kernel doesn't upgrade because of zfs requires the older kernel, and zfs doesn't upgrade because the new version of zfs requires the new kernel.
Previously I upgraded AUR packages manually, by first removing them, then upgrading the kernel and after that installing new versions of packages.
Is it possible to automatically upgrade kernel packages? If so can this be done with pacaur?

Hi, so I'm not the only newbie doing such things.

I did that today but the output was just:

I don't really know if I want to remove the package first, while running the machine from a zfs filesystem.
If it runs automatically the chance of me making an error is a little smaller, don't really want to have a not bootable system.

  • 15" 2.53Ghz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro - kernel panics about every 5 minutes after Lion upgrade

I just recently upgraded to Lion and since then have been plagued as it seems many users have been with kernel panics after the upgrade.  Have repaired disk permissions, analyzed the drive with diskwarrior, swapped out the memory, unplugged all external devices, and shut down all unnecessary applications to no avail.  Anyone have any idea when this is going to be fixed by Apple?  My laptop is pretty much useless and formatting and going back to Snow Leopard is a rediculous option since I really do not want to spend a day or more reinstalling all of my applications just to get to a workable situation until Apple gets their "stuff" together.  C'mon Apple - we expect more from you than this!
