Kernel 2.6.39.1-1 issues: reboot no longer working

I recently upgraded from kernel 2.6.38.7-1 to 2.6.39.1-1 , and have observed that this has caused reboot to no longer work.  Specifically, issuing "reboot -n" kicks off the shutdown process ok, and I see the shutdown procedure getting broadcast to the interactive users, but this then hangs at the very last step, where it says Restarting.
This used to work fine, and I have confirmed that a downgrade back to 2.6.38.7-1 fixes this for me.  All other packages from core and extra are up-to-date as of the time of this post.
The hardware is a fit-pc2 (i.e. intel atom-based).  Is this a known upstream bug?

Thanks for replies.
@stlarch :  what information would be most useful?  Happy to provide whatever might be relevant.  Hopefully the below helps
1.  I use laptop-mode-tools with everything enabled even for AC power and acpi-cpufreq.
2.  both "shutdown -r now" and "reboot" work fine if I downgrade just the kernel back to 2.6.38.7-1 .  They both don't work (i.e. hang instead of reboot) if I upgrade just the kernel to 2.6.39.1-1
3.  It's all worked out of the box for me for the last 6 months or so, and only the latest 2.6.39.1-1 kernel has this problem, hence why I suspect it's a regression.
4.  Assuming wm means window manager:  none.   I don't even have X installed.  This is purely a headless server, run unattended and rebooted (when necessary) remotely via ssh.
5.  My dmesg reports "Selecting BIOS-method for reboots."  -   regardless of kernel version  (i.e. when running both versions mentioned)
6.  No clues in the logs unfortunately leap out to me.  Let me know if there's a specific logfile that might have clues.  With both a successful reboot (on older kernel) and failed reboot (on the newer kernel) the last few lines of everything.log say the same thing:
Jun 11 16:30:33 Xxxx shutdown[1600]: shutting down for system reboot
Jun 11 16:30:33 Xxxx init: Switching to runlevel: 6
Jun 11 16:30:34 Xxxx nmbd[1060]: [2011/06/11 16:30:34.651659,  0] nmbd/nmbd.c:71(terminate)
Jun 11 16:30:34 Xxxx nmbd[1060]:   Got SIGTERM: going down...
Jun 11 16:30:35 Xxxx laptop-mode: Laptop mode
Jun 11 16:30:35 Xxxx laptop-mode: disabled, not active
Jun 11 16:30:36 Xxxx kernel: [ 1605.732274] r8169 0000:02:00.0: PME# enabled
Jun 11 16:30:36 Xxxx syslog-ng[522]: Termination requested via signal, terminating;
Jun 11 16:30:36 Xxxx syslog-ng[522]: syslog-ng shutting down; version='3.2.4'
@brebs:  As above, this works/doesn't work dependent solely on version of kernel26 package.  Is there a kernel change between those two versions that would require me changing my kernel options?   I'd like to understand what caused the regression and see if there's an upstream fix (or raise it as an upstream issue if not), rather than just a reconfiguration/workaround.

  • Strange import issue .. no longer works in 2.6 or Beta 3

    Strange import issue.
I use LR-2.6 everyday but have only played around with the LR-3 for a limited amount of time so the other day I decided check it out and tried to import a handful of RAW(canon) files on a SDxc-8g card via a USB card reader. I set it up to copy and convert to DNG, apply a few keywords and Metadata but when I tried it acted like it imported the first image and then froze. Card reader lights stopped blinking and just stayed on, program task bar doesn’t show any progress, not even for the first image. I then went to the folder that I was going to have the images copies to and it contained a file of the first image, but there is no indication that LR-3 even created it and it doesn’t show up in the catalog. When I tried to close out LR-3 is popped up the “in the middle of a task warning” so I just closed the program and tried it a couple more times to no avail.
So I though o well I will just open up LR-2.6 and import them from there, guess what now LR-2.6 does the exact same thing!!
I thought maybe my card reader was a POS but I was able to drag all the files to a new folder on my desktop and import them from there, nope. Tried rebooting a couple times, even opened a new catalog to test with, in both LR-2.6 and LR-3 and neither will work..
    I am stumped any ideas?

    Thank you for everyone's assistance
I actually figured out what the problem was, like most issues it comes back to operator error, it seem I had inadvertently chose a "rename file on import" template that I had set up to name the files based on a custom fill-in field in the Meta Data, I normally only used that template when I was exporting images that had been completely edited, so being these images were new imports that field was blank, hence it would import the first image and then do to " don't import subjected duplicates" being checked it would just stop the import process.

  • [SOLVED: HW ISSUE] WLAN no longer works (Zotac IQ01 / r8169 / iwlwifi)

After recent (since 9.7.2014) updates, the WLAN link stopped working for me - and I don't seem to be find a way to restore it. Thus, your wisdom is appreciated:
    Setup/Background
    - Device: Zotac ZBox IQ (http://www.zotac.com/products/mini-pcs/ … nt/10.html)
    - Network device (2xGLAN): Realtek  RTL8111/8168/8411 (kernel module r8169 loads)
    - Wifi (device missing, used to work as enp3s0 ??), should be intel chipset
    - Wired connection works
    - NetworkManager is in use
    - Dmesg error: enp3s0 link is not ready
    Tried so far
    - Tested with older kernel 3.14.x -- no change
    - Tested with kernel-lts -- no change
    - Tested with older networkmanager -- no change
    - Tested with fresh Arch media (latest.iso) -- device cannot be found
    - Tested with older Arch media (1.4.2014.iso) -- device cannot be found
    - Tried bringing up the link with command: ip link set dev enp3s0 up -- no change, no error
    - Unloading r8169 removes the wired connection in networkmanager but not wireless, is that normal?
    - Noticed also this link (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … OL_problem), but setup has no Windows
Any pointers? Had a similar problem sometime in the past (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=177793 -- different device), and then after some time and upgrades it just started working again.
    Thanks in advance,
    Juha
    [EDIT 14.7]
Removed misleading reference: Noticed this post (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=183601) and changed name in udev rules: enp03s0 -> wlp03s0 -- no change
    [EDIT 16.7]
Added some details seen also later in thread

  • HP G62 Laptop fan issue, fan no longer working HELP

Basically i have a HP G60 laptop and cleaned my fan with compressed air and it stopped my laptop overheating etc etc.
HOWEVER my other half has a HP G62 laptop and her fan is LOUD and is on the verge of overheating and shutting itself down.
So i used the compressed air can to clean her fan BUT it completely stopped spinning and now i get the error message saying the fan isnt operating properly and its not advised to continue with normal use.
I can get onto windows. but the compressed air (Which EVERYONE recommends) seems to have completely either broke the fan or blown dust INTO the fan and stopped it.
After many restart attempts it came on breifly making this ticking noise as if the blades were hitting something as it spun (which was slow might i add).
MAYBE the bios has detected the fan was blocked and stopped attempting to spin??? i dont know i need help or advice before i dismantle it to try and clean the fan manually.
which i KNOW is quite fiddly for an amatuer. fans should be the easiest thing to get to not the hardest but oh well...
    HELP PLEASE
    This question was solved.

just to let you know i have fixed it, the fan seemed completely broken with no movement and its cos i spun it too fast with the compressed air or blew the clumps of dust and lint back into the fan and clogged it. either way i just got it working by taking a womens hair pin and poking it through the slot carefully and turning the blades, it got a bit difficult like there was something stopping it, but after i pushed past that point i spun it with the clip a few more times then it fired up no problems when i powered on.
thanks anyway your advice was spot on!

Ahh. We can still help find the culprit, TeaParty14. Do you have any 3rd party applications installed to play your music? Are you able to hear any audio if you plug the headphones back into the phone instead of rebooting? Any audio for calls through the phone direct or through speakerphone?

Download/install an app is a know possible solution.
    3. Install another app from the App Store
If all user-installed apps are not launching, it could be an Apple ID authorization issue. Download and install an app that isn't already installed on your device to reset this information.
Note: If you have installed apps using multiple Apple ID accounts, you may need to perform this step for each account.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
*Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
Another possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

After today's reboot, the audio device no longer works. E.g., VLC says:

The strange thing is that the sound card does in fact work; e.g. the sound test for "HDA Intel PCH", the first entry in my KDE Audio Settings, works. But the entry "default" does not and I suppose that is also the device that VLC is complaining about.
I've tried blacklisting the HDMI driver and switched to the other audio output modules in VLC. I've also checked I'm still member of the "audio" group.
    Edit:
P.S. Solved this myself. I had a USB-to-MIDI adapter cable plugged in during boot, which seems to have been causing these problems. I suppose systemd thought it was a USB sound card? I was wondering why dmesg said something about USB sound when the computer doesn't have any USB sound devices. Hardware detection epic fail. Although I guess the cable counts as a MIDI device at least, so in a way it's correct.
So it looks like I'll always have to unplug the MIDI cable before rebooting.

In more specific terms. The apps that came on the iPod like the weather and maps and whatnot have been working flawlessly. It's just when I download an app and then disconnect from wifi it's almost like I'm on a timer until the app stops working. It acts like it wants to open, the screen flashes black then resets to the home pages. I've tried all of the basic fixes, rebooting, reseting, uninstalling then reinstalling. But like in my...long...question, the reinstalling option only seems to be a temporary fix. I just recently downloaded the 5.1.1 udate (I think that's what it was) does that have anything to do with it, or am I just derpy when it comes to iPods?

    Try the other suggestions here:

    Then try a restore.

    You could try this

If it does then reset the security - with the same or different password

  • Issue with Oracle LONG RAW data type

    Hi All,
I am facing some issues with Oracle LONG RAW DATA Type.
We are using Oracle 9IR2 Database.
I got a table having LONG RAW column and I need to transfer the same into another table having LONG RAW column.
When I tried using INSERT INTO SELECT * command (or) CREATE TABLE as select * , it is throwing ORA-00997: illegal use of LONG datatype.
I have gone through some docs and found we should not use LONG RAW using these operations.
So I did some basic PLSQL block given below and I was able to insert most of the records. But records where the LONG RAW file is like 7O kb, the inserting is faliling.
I tried to convert LONG RAW to BLOB and again for the record where the LONG RAW is big in size I am getting (ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error) error.
Appreciate if anyone can help me out here.

I have recently upgraded my iMac to 10.6.8 and now find that the upload photo to Facebook facility no longer works. I have reset Safari but this has not resolved the issue - any suggestions? I can click on the "upload photos/video" field and it takes me to Finder to select the photo - but on selecting the photo, the Finder screen disappears as normal but from then on nothing happens.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:  Remove All Website Data
    Now empty the Safari cache.
Back to the menu bar, click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
Quit and relaunch Safari then try Facebook.
If that doesn't help, it may be a Safari extension preventing you from uploading content to Facebook.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • Strange issue when pausing LONG audiobook--pressing play again changes the

Strange issue when pausing LONG audiobook--pressing play again changes the position within the book--it doesn't start back exactly where it left off.
The audiobook of "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" is between 18 and 19 HOURS long--all as one long track/file.
I've noticed that when I pause while listening and then press play again, it "rewinds" and starts playing portions of the audiobook from about 10 minutes prior--but the time stamp doesn't change. At least this is the time frame from the first "test". Other pauses/plays may result in different time differences.
The first time this happened, I didn't realize what it was doing. I pressed play (from the pause) and I heard a portion that I had already played. I thought that the bookmark just didn't "remember" as it should have, so I scrubbed forward trying to find where I remembered leaving off. If you end up pausing/playing even a couple of times with this happening each time, the portion of the audiobook that you're playing and the time stamp becomes COMPLETELY off! For example, almost an hour into the time stamp was really only about 10-15 minutes into the actual book.
I'm not sure if this makes any sense, but hopefully it does to someone. It's very frustrating to have this happen simply because you had to pause while listening. You have to scrub backwards or forwards each time to find out where you REALLY left off at and the time stamp becomes of no help value since it doesn't change as the playback position moves itself.
I'm sure that this is something happening due to the extreme length of the audio file. That maybe it can't track as precisely as it could with shorter lengths. ???
Any ideas? Has anyone else seen this happen? Any ideas on whether or not there is anything that can be done to prevent this?

I'm glad that I'm not the only one having this
problem. It's ironic that we're both having issues
with the SAME audiobook. I haven't had a chance to
listen to Books 1-5 much to see if they have the same
issue or not--I don't remember any on the few parts
that I've played for my nephews.
Yeah, I know! I was shocked to see that. I recently finished HP5 (twice), and NEVER had this issue, but it is a much smaller file size.
I'm thinking that I may try to convert to AAC before
I try the splitting program--in theory, it's easier
to start right back in again when you only have 1
track to find, than when you have dozens/hundreds of
smaller tracks. It's sometimes hard to remember
which track you left off with--even if it's
    "bookmarked" within that track.
I dunno anything about AAC, to be honest. Never used it. My plan is to split the MP3 into smaller MP3s by chapter and load them on a playlist. Of course, I will have to label them all nice and pretty. It is a long book, but you could always just load a couple of chapter files at a time. The only thing that I can see that would be kind of a pain about splitting it with the Cool MP3 is searching thru the file for each chapter and setting break points.
My only concern is how much quality I'm losing by
    converting from one compressed format--MP3--to
    another compressed format AAC.
Yeah. Ew. No clue. Sounds unpleasant to me. Again, I really do not do anything with AAC.
    I suppose, since it's
spoken word instead of music, the change shouldn't be
too noticable. I'm not sure what kind of time frame
it'll require to convert. I'll probably try it with
    book 1 first--since it's the smallest.
May depend on the program. The one I got boasts no quality loss. You may wanna scrounge around the download sites and see which one sounds like it has the best features, even if you do just get a free trial version of something. I would definitely read the editor's ratings. I tend to trust that more than the typical end user's. They show how many stars the editor gives a product, and you can click that for the review, or sometimes they have labeled tabs where you can access the review.
As for how long it takes me to rip that particular file and if that actually fixes the scrubbing problem, I will have to let you know tomorrow. WAAAAY past my bedtime!
Keep me updated on your end. I sure which that there
was an explanation for why it happens.
Will do! I am thinking you hit the nail on the head with the length. That was exactly what popped into my mind when I figured out what the goofy thing was doing.
    Talk to you later!
