Kernel crash on trying to start from install CD

Has anyone experienced this? After (apparently successfully) installing Leopard, I discovered that the Kona 3 PCi card I have installed is not yet compatible. So I tried to return to Tiger. Everytime I try to start from my Tiger install disc I get a kernel crash with:
Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300 - Data access DAR=0x0000000000000000 PC=0x000000005546EF94
Latest crash info for cpu 0:

There's more... if anyone has any idea how to solve this problem and needs the rest of the screen I have a Jpeg I can send...
I fear something drastic has happened to my G5 but I'm sure it can be restored somehow
any help much appreciated

yes you would think it would be simple I agree but it hasn't been.... what I'm actually trying to do is return to Tiger as the Kona 3 card is not yet fully compatible with Leopard. This is part of a long saga for me. I even erased the hard disc completely and tried to start up from the DVD and still got the kernel panic. At one point I was able to boot from a firewire drive with an old version of 10.4 but I could not access everything I needed. I have tried to install from a retail DVD of Tiger install disc, I also tried with other Tiger install discs from colleagues but always got the kernel panic.
HOWEVER, today I reset the SMU (physically pressing the button http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341 ) Then I managed to find the install discs that came with the G5(Quad) and tried again and amazingly it worked. I did an archive and install and now, so far, have Tiger running again and my RAID array is functioning better again.

  • Macbook Pro crashes while trying to boot from install disc

    I have a 2.6GHz 17" Intel C2D MacbookPro running 10.6.6
Over the last few weeks I been experiencing numerous crashes, often while watching flash video. It freezes, the screen distorts and flashes and I have to reboot holding the power button.
Most times I can't turn it back on, it just won't get past the boot up stage. I generally try and boot from the install disc and/or another computer via firewire target mode, run permissions, disc warrior etc and eventually it will boot on it's own accord.
Now it won't even boot to the install disc. (the 10.5.2 disc that came with the computer)
It just crashes, screen dims and the 4 language warning asks me to hold down the power button.
I do notice that usually when you get these crashes that the background is a solid grey. but these times it's a speckled white and grey?
Is my graphics card on the way out (or out already)
Here's the crash logs from the last 2 crashes when I've got it to boot again.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Best regards
    Jesse

Yes, thus the link to the NVIDIA issue. NVIDIA is the maker of the GPU ("video card").
The quoted me $1000! I'm pretty bummed I need to spend that much on a 2 yr old machine. You should be able to expect more life than that.
If you're content to pay the $1000, no need to ask them to run the test for the NVIDIA issue. If you're not content, I would certainly ask them. Provide the link if they're unaware of it.
My only viable option is to buy the part off eBay and put it in myself.
Or have them test for NVIDIA issue. Or ask about a depot repair for $310.

  • Error when trying to start from install disk OS X 10.4

    Hi,
I have an iBook G4 with the 1.42 GHz model, 60 GB, 512 RAM. I am running OSX 10.4.11. I would like to get it to run better. I installed TenFourFox as my new browser, that seemed to help, but it's still pretty slow. So then I freed up some more space on the hard drive. Then I started it up in Safe Mode, then I ran the disk utility and repaired the disk permissions. I ran the disk verify and found errors, and I then ran fsck - y at the command line. That seemed to get rid of the errors, but I am thinking I should format the hard drive and do a clean install.
Will doing a clean install help the computer run better/ faster? How can I do it? I am running into errors...
I lost the install disks, but luckily a friend of mine had a copy.
I insert the disk, power down, and restart.
I get the a really long error message, below are snippets:

Is there something wrong with my computer? Or are the install disks not compatible? Maybe they were install disks for a powerbook and not an iBook (not sure if that matters).
I am also considering installing RAM. Will that help a lot with the speed (i.e. 50% faster?) or just a little?
Thanks a lot for any input!

Wrong install Disc, that one is machine specific, & doubtful a reinstall will help all that much.
More RAM will likely help, but not awfully likely it'll be 50%.
To tell, ehen it gets slow, Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens, click on Memory tab, do you have many Pageouts?

When I started my iMac today, it started beeping like an alarm horn.  I shut it down, and held the startup button a little longer to get it to start.  Shortly after starting up, a dark 'film' slowly comes down over the screen and I get a message saying I have to shut down the computer.  I've tried to start from the disk, and before I can even run a repair off utilities, it happens again.  What's up?  Am I screwed?  HELP!!

What you are seeing is a kernel panic, often but not always connected with a hardware or peripheral issue, so, unplug everything except mouse and  keyboard, reboot and hold the shift key as soon as your hear the chime, continue holding it until you see the Apple Icon and spinning progress indicator, then post back.
It will take noticeably longer than normal to start.

  • Help - Photoshop Elements 8 crashes when trying to start Organizer

Photoshop Elements 8 crashes when trying to start Organizer. Funny, that starting the Photoshop Editor is not a problem and works fine.
I deinstalled the software and then installed it again, but had no effect.
    What can I do?
    Nick

The Organizer preferences may have become corrupted, needing to be automatically re-built on a re-start.
    Close Elements.
Click the Start Button and then your user name (in place of mine) and navigate to:
    C: Users >> 99Jon >> AppData >> Roaming >> Adobe >> Elements Organizer >>8.0 >> Organizer
Delete the PSA file (with key symbol) and delete Status.dat
After deleting these two files re-start the program
AppData may be a hidden system file. See the link to reveal hidden files.

When trying to open Photoshop it crashes when
the display window is trying to open and the text:

I've tried uninstalling the program and installing

Thank you for any advice or tech support,

In case you have some scanner/printer etc installed in the machine it might be causing issue. Try launching with none of the devices attached and anti virus disabled.

  • Trying to Start the install, computer locks up

So, i got this (what i believe to be considered) powermac G3, im new to macs, i got this thing for free, and its running the old version of Mac OS, i want to upgrade to 10.4 tiger, and i have the disc's and everything already, whenever it tries to start the install though, it asks you to restart so i click restart and it locks up, so i went under system pref's to try and switch startup to the Disk, and it locks up whenever i try that, and whenever i try to boot from the disc using the apple option shift delete thing, it never works, it sits and loads between the OS logo and a question mark, until i let go of the buttons, and then it just loads the old OS anyways..... any help would be highly appreciated, i got the computer from my moms work, its from a bank, i dont know if maybe they have some security feature on maybe or something, i dont know, i know next to nothing about these computers

(Some duplication here. My post and Adrian's crossed)
It sounds like you need to update the Firmware from 9.2. (You show you are running 9.2). Trying to install Tiger before you do so can lead to disastrous results. See this thread for more information. What kind of drive does the G3 have? Are you trying to use a DVD in a CD only Drive? CDs for Tiger, no longer available, were issued by Apple as DVD replacements (set of four). They are white overall with black text. If you have a DVD Drive, the proper DVD is black (silver X); that's the retail version. Other discs will be machine specific and won't work. For firmware updating see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8838638&#8838638
Also Apple recommends 256 MB minimum Ram for Tiger, but that's bare bones. Minimum really is 512 or 768. Look in System Profiler for specs on you machine.
Here's a good place to look for compatible RAM, but call them first to determine exactly what you need.

  • My iTunes crashes when trying to start and says can't open the windows

My iTunes crashes when trying to start and says can't open the windows

did toy do all the recent updates?

  • Mail crashing when trying to start the app.

Never had this problem until I updated the os to the latest security update a few days ago (May 26 or so). When starting up the Mail program I see the screen coming up and before having any time to do anything it just quits on me. Nothing on my system has changed. Any other people having the same problems? Any possibility to just re-install or repair the mail program without loosing any of the data?
    ...miakel

Did Mail start crashing immediately after installing the Security Update or a few days later? It could very well be that Mail is crashing while trying to load a message with bad HTML content.
    1. Launch Mail holding the Shift key down until the main window appears. This should prevent Mail from trying to select any mailboxes or load any messages upon starting up.
If Mail doesn't crash now, then you know there is a troublesome message somewhere, and you'll have to find it and get rid of it:
    2. Go to Mail > Preferences > Viewing and disable "Display remote images in HTML messages" if it's enabled -- having this setting enabled is a really bad idea for spam-related reasons anyway.
    3. If the preview pane is visible in the main Mail window, drag the horizontal separator bar between the messages list pane and the message preview pane to the bottom of the window, or just double-click within the separator bar, so that the preview pane disappears and only the messages list is visible. This prevents Mail from trying to load a message when it is selected in the messages list pane.
    4. You should now be able to select the message that's causing Mail to crash and delete it.
    5. If you want to make the preview pane visible again, drag the horizontal separator bar up from the bottom of the window, or just double-click it again.

  • How do I restart iOS download after internet crashes without having to start from the beginning.

My internet crashes and stops downloading the iOS restore software for my phone.  When I try to restart the download, it starts from the beginning.  How can I get it to cary on from where it left off?  Why doesn't it do this automatically!?
    Thanks.

If you've already unsuccessfully tried to resume the download then the previously partial download may no longer be present on you computer.<br />
What you can do in such a case is:
    * Move the old .part partial download and the 0 byte final file without the .part to another location.<br />
    * Start a new download and pause it, don't close Firefox.<br />
    * Copy the two files (.part and 0 byte final) that you moved above back to the download location to replace the new files that were created.<br />
    * Resume the download in Firefox.

  • How can I start from install disc without shutting down Mac?

Sorry. that last post wasn't so clear. I started the computer without a password, but I think when I was trying to set my own password I may
    have re-activated the old one.
I'm afraid that if I shut it down I won't be able to restart it?- (for starting over from install discs)
    What Have I Done?
This is a hard one. Can anyone help?

Put the disk inside the slot.
    Hit the restart button.
Hold down the c key as your computer is booting.

  • Frozen, started from install cd, what next?

Have just aquired a 400mhz imac crt with 128 extra memory card, which came with panther installed and started successfully into osx when powered up. Yesterday spent changing system prefences mainly to multiple user plus network settings from the previous owner to our own. (All 5 of our machines are on wired ethernet with linksys router behind a BT voyager adsl modem). Used by daughter in the evening mainly msn and setting up her iTunes library. This am would not start when switched on, heard the chime then a flash of a blue screen then a grey screen then a picture of a file with a smiley face which occasionaly changes to a question mark, the computer makes ticking noises. Tried a start holding the shift key with same result. Tried a start with the install disc holding down the c key and started successfully into os 9, no ticking noises.
What do I do next to start osx or is it now gone?
eMac17crt,iMacflat screen,3x iMac crt   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   eMac is tiger, flat screen imac is jaguar, the three g3's are running panther

well i tried what the manual says, start up while holding the shift key, no change, then inserted software install CD and start up holding the C key, this worked in that the iMac started up in OS 9, but I could not find a way to do a hardware check, the only volume displayed was the boot disc, couldnt eject the disc so shut down. Decided to try resetting PRAM which I had to use other threads to find out what was involved (by the way I have a boxfull of apple keyboards here of various age and colour, not one has a key labelled 'shift' I used google images to look for this and it shows me a key I dont have) so I pressed the upper case key(?with the short arrow) and the key with an apple and the square with loopy corners and r and p (I think) whilst the machine started. This took me reasonably quickly to a grey screen with an apple on it, which was good in that it was a different result, which I then looked at untill I lost all feeling in my fingertips and gave up waiting for the second chime. Went to another room and spent an hour figuring out what replacement hard drives will fit and bidding for one on ebay. Came back to the patient and lo and behold there was the OSX log in screen. RESULT. Entered log in details and waited 5 minutes whilst log in proceded and delivered a desktop complete with dock. Clicked on the apple, took about a minute of the spinning beachball to show the menu, hovered the mouse over the finder page options and it takes about 5 seconds to change the menu after the pointer is moved. Still sick, but different.
So I figure I have a different problem now, the computer has found the system file and starts, but it is very slooooooooooooooooooooow. It still ticks, but that too is slowly. I'm not sure about forum protocol but I will mark this question as answered and go search for answers to slow computers, perhaps I will be back with a slow question. I'm also nervous about doing anything that will lose the software on this machine and will be looking for a way to back this up onto another machine whilst I still have the opportunity (hopefully) before I do anything else.
thanks to be236 for your help

  • Cannot start from install disk

We have a multi mac household and I'm pretty sure (but not positive) the 10.5.4 install disk belongs to this computer (MacBook Pro).  I really need to use Disk Tools but when I try to start with the DVD I grinds for a couple minutes then just sits there with a gray screen (no apple logo). I've tried:
Inserting the disk normally, clicking on install and clicking the restart button as required.
Holding down the "c" while starting
    Holding down option while starting
Holding down "d" while starting (for hardware test)
    Zapping the PRAM
Changing the startup volume in the settings
..but I always get the same result as above. I have to hold down the power button to get it to shut down, then restart with the trackpad depressed to get the disk out.
    Questions:
    1) Does anyone have another idea I should try here?
    2) Is the gray screen I'm seeing a symptom of trying to start with the wrong system disk?
    3) How does one know if the install disk is the right one for the machine?
    Many thanks!!!

While the media issues get sorted out, I can offer a workaround to completing the disk repairs, sans Install DVD (BTW, that's why the latter day media came only one to the box; they rolled everything together into a single dual-layer DVD). Normal disk repairs require booting from alternate media because the OS is doing multitasking, that is, accessing the boot media thru various concurrent processes. If multitasking is disabled, the issue disappears.
So, since you're in the Leopard world, I offer two choices. Best would be you download and install the latest release of the AppleJack utility ( http://applejack.sourceforge.net/ ), this is the premier power-user disk repair utility, which we Lion users miss dearly. AJ comes with a quick and easy installer that simplifies the process of getting it ready. Else you will have to do some command-line stuff by hand.
How to proceed; get this down somewhere, cause the Mac won't be usable till you finish. Restart the Mac and hold down the Option Command S keys. This gets you into Single User mode. No graphics interface here and all commands have to be typed on the screen, just like Grampa did back in the dawn of the Computer Age. After the # prompt appears and if you previously installed AppleJack, just type applejack and the return key; follow onscreen instructions, at least do steps 1, 2 & 4. If #1 shows any errors, redo until it comes out clean. When finished, return to quit and restart as indicated by the AppleJack prompt.
If you did not install AppleJack, type the following command exactly as written, followed by the return key: fsck -fy  Wait until the # prompt reappears (may take awhile), repeat if any errors are indicated, then type reboot and the return key to restart the Mac. Not as thorough as AppleJack, but this will fix your HDD.
There, you will have now gone deep into the belly of the Unix beast running on your Mac. This is the non-graphics, non-fancy version of Disk Utility, just like computers were done before graphical GUIs.Since only a single process (fsck) runs in Single User mode, it is able to fix the disk without the multitasking issues. Of course, if you can't get a clean and error-free fsck run, the HDD has problems it can't fix (just like it may happen with DU) and you will need more help. BTW, fsck is the Unix geekcode for File System ChecK.
