Kernel crash on USB data transfers on PB 1.67G
Hi,
I have PG 1.67 GHz... recently a strange thing has started happening. If I connect any USB storage device, the after few hundred MB of transfer, PB Kernel Crashes. Any idea on what might be wrong?
Kernel panics are usually, but not always, caused by hardware. Have you run your Apple hardware test off your original OS X disks?
This may have some other ideas: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

Constantly getting kernel crash errors
Hi,
I have a Power Mac G4 Gigabit Ethernet with 704MB RAM, dual 500MHz G4 processors and 16MB VRAM and it is running Tiger (10.4.11) and I keep getting that weird error that says "You need to restart your computer" on a black dialogue with a giant power button in the center. I believe this is a kernel crash message and it's getting very annoying. I have to keep hitting the restart button or force the computer to shut down and I don't like doing this. Will my computer be harmed if I do this? Why is it doing this? I think it may be related to my really cheap USB WiFi card I have installed cause that's when it first started. When I pulled the card out (cause it wasn't working correctly) and popped it back in then I got that message a few seconds later.
ThanksThanks for the reply. I checked the log and it does say a few things about USB so maybe it is that. I posted the log below so you can double check. As long as it's just that WiFi card then it doesn't matter since I already ordered a new one (PCI 802.11g). But, will I have to reinstall my OS now that I got so many kernel panics? Do those mess up my hardware or software?
Here's the log: (note that this isn't the whole log, just the last two crashes since it would take up too much space to paste the whole log.

GTX Nvidia Kernel crash, possible heat issue ?
I had a crash tonight while working on the timeline of Adobe Premiere CS6. I am on a MacPro 3.1 with a GTX 470 (from macvidcards) under 10.8.4 and its proper drivers. I was doing extensive scrubbing and I could hear the GTX's fan spinning louder than usual. I thought these kernel crashes would dissapear with the latest nvidia drivers, in fact I haven't got a crash for over months until tonight where I was pushing the limit.
Then I opened GPUtest and did a stress test which crashed the screen and locked the system after only 3 minutes of heavy load and fan noise. Flickering dots and rectangles and color hue change. Forced restart.
I went on to purchase an Artic Cooling Acceleto Twin Turbo II graphics card cooler.
I am reasoning that this is a heat issue. Has anyone experienced similar, I still suspect the drivers but after the EVGA Mac Edition I don't know if it is fair to say so for Nvidia. Thanks nbar, with pleasure..
This is what I pulled from the console:

Getting data transfered from old HD to new ones, leaving 2 slots filled . .
Hello,
*(Below is a thread I started in another forum, but, didn't get my final questions answered (see at bottom of this post in BOLD), and am hoping for further help and suggestions. I know there is a lot to read here, but, I think this information will help other novices, such as myself. Thanks!)*
I have 2 new HDs (each 1T) uninstalled, and I have my old HD (160 gigs) currently residing in one of the two slots in my G5. Any ideas on the best way/process to get the data transfered from the old HD to the new ones, leaving my two slots filled with the 2 new drives AND my data from the old HD transfered and intact, with a RAID0 setup?
OR, are there any other suggestions on a good setup with the 2 new HDs??
I'm open to suggestions.
I always back-up on external HDs, so, is their a need for me to worry about setting up a RAID0??
I'm doing video processing for DVD release.
Should I just max out the 2x1T gig HDs and not worry about a HD failure??
All Suggestions welcomed!!
Thanks, Jack

You are limited with only 2 drive slots. In this scenario what usually works best is a small fast drive (eg Velocirapter or SSD) for OSX/Applications and a large drive for video files. It is not advisable to have the operating system running from a striped array.
Since you already have the drives, here is what you can do.
Install one new drive and format the partition you wish to use for OSX. You may not want to use the whole drive for OSX, so make 2 partitions. Be sure that it is GPT-formatted so it can boot.
Use CarbonCopy Cloner to copy your current OSX partition to the new one.
Set the startup disk as the new partition.
Remove the old drive and replace it with the second new one.
Reboot, and partition/format new drive.
*Hey Cutterman,*
Thanks for the advice. That sounds like a good set-up. I'll have to research the process of doing what you've advised, but, should work out ok:
A. Install one new drive and format the partition you wish to use for OSX. You may not want to use the whole drive for OSX, so make 2 partitions:
1. Partitions are done under Disc Utilities correct? Never done it before; will take a look.
B. Be sure that it is GPT-formatted so it can boot.
2. GPT is also done under Disc Utilities, correct? Here I start to get a bit confused, as I've formatted Extended Journal, SO, the partition with the OSX & Applications is formatted GPT, and the rest of the HD is formatted as Extended Journal?
C. Use CarbonCopy Cloner to copy your current OSX partition to the new one.
3. So, I partition the first new HD and use Carbon Copy Cloner (also under Disc Utilities) to copy the OSX & Applications from my original HD to the first new HD, correct?
D. Set the startup disk as the new partition.
4. This will be an option when I setup the partition???
E. Remove the old drive and replace it with the second new one.
F. Reboot, and partition/format new drive.
5. QUESTION: So, you recommend not striping the HDs: If I do a RAID 1, which sets up a mirror of the HDs, and since the first new HD is partitioned with the OSX & Applications, AND is set up as the Startup Disk, then the second new HD will also mirror that?? Another QUESTION: Even if the second new HD does not mirror the OSX & Applications, the second HD will only mirror the space/partition not utilized by the OSX & Applications partition, correct?
Thanks for your help!!
Jack
*FROM THE CUTTERMAN:*
OK I will try to answer your questions. To begin, if you want to mirror the 2 drives then you will need to boot from the SL install DVD or an external (USB/firewire) drive to set it up. IMO for your purposes it is too much hassle and a waste of HD space.
1) Yes partitions are created in Disk Utility
2) Yes, you choose a volume Scheme (ie number of partitions) and size them by dragging the separator bar. Then select the planned boot partition and click Options..., then choose GPT. I think it is usually the default but check and make sure. Extended journaled is the usual format.
3) You need to download Carbon Copy. It is a free tool that will copy the entire image of your current system partition to the new one and make it bootable. Consider making a donation as it is a very useful and frequently updated utility. It is fairly intuitive to use. You can also use the restore feature in Disk Utility but I have had more experience with Carbon Copy.
4) Once the copy process is finished the new boot partition will show up under the startup disk selections (this tool is in System Preferences).
*FROM 666Sheep:*
If may i correct one thing: OP, don't choose GPT (GUID Partition Table). You got PPC Mac (G5), so valid partition type for you is Apple Partition Map (APM).
GPT is for Intel Macs and you will not able to boot from this kind of partition.
*FROM THE CUTTERMAN:*
Thanks for the correction- my bad. No familiarity with non-Intel Macs.

*Hi All,*
*Since this process will come to a head on Tuesday/Wednesday, and I hope to be successful in transferring Old HD data to new HD/s.*
*A: I'm still a little foggy here, as I thought I'd set up the 2 new T-gig HDs so that if one of them failed, I'd still have the data backed up on the other HD; more ideas concerning this would be reassuring:*
*WHAT DOES "IMO" mean?*
*(IMO for your purposes it is too much hassle and a waste of HD space.)*
*As I understand the points made: After I partition the first new HD, and Carbon Copy data from old HD, I then install second new HD, and this will just act as an overflow from the first partitioned HD, correct? Because, if set up a Raid1/Mirror, the OSX partitioned portion of the first new HD will not copy to the second new HD, and that space on the second new HD will be wasted, correct?*
*Also: I have to set up RAID1 (if I do not set up RAID0), correct?*
*RAID 1*
*From WIKI: RAID 1 mirrors the contents of the disks, making a form of 1:1 ratio real time mirroring. The contents of each disk in the array are identical to that of every other disk in the array. A RAID 1 array requires a minimum of two drives.*
*Carbon Copy is a free tool that will copy the entire image of your current system partition to the new one and make it bootable.*
*1. Is my old HD partitioned? Is that done automatically by MAC prior to PC purchase?*
*2. Do I Carbon Copy the whole old HD or just parts? (eg. OSX, Photo Shop, After Effects, Various Files)*
*3. I read that it is necessary to DEACTIVATE Photo Shop (I have CS3) prior to doing Carbon Copy. Is that correct? If so, does this also apply to other Adobe applications? Such as After Affects, Illustrator??*
*Thanks to all for the help!!*
*G5 PowerMac, 2.5 GHz Dual, Dec. 2004, 6.5 GB RAM, 149 GB HD*Confusing Information:
A1: You also want to make sure the drive you are backing up to is formatted Mac HFS Extended (HFS+) if using Mac OS 8.1 or above.
A2: On PowerPC Macs, your clone should be partitioned as Apple Partition Map.
*Q? I thought the new HD (1T) should be formatted in Extended Journaled?*
B: Also disable Spotlight (in 10.4 only) on your destination drive using Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Spotlight -> Privacy to add the destination drive to the pane.
*Q? I'm using 10.4.11, so, I should follow these instructions?*
C: If possible, boot into safe mode to perform the backup (holding the SHIFT key at startup). In addition, you can clone while logged into another administrative user that you don't use at all to avoid further complications of changes which may be happening to your regular user (though don't use Fast User Switching to get into that other user, since that other user is still active when fast user switching is used). Otherwise you are going to be running a backup on a live system which could have changes happening while you are attempting to backup. These may yield an imperfect clone, with uncertain success at recovery. It may be possible that your clone will have its own hardware issues, so make at least two copies.

How to achieve high usb data rate with cRIO-9022?
Hi all,
I read the datasheet of NI-9022 and know that USB data rate can be 480Mb/s.
I want to transfer data with rate 3.6MB/s which is much slower than the spec, but the result is time out error.
I check my FPGA and RT code by save to RT disk and the result is pass. So I think my code should be correct.
Is that because the USB driver not installed into RT?
Should I install the USB driver into RT?
Or is there any other issue I haven't find?
Thanks a lot.According to this document: Data Storage Options for CompactRIO, depending on many conditions, such as complexity of processor
requirements, USB data can be transferred off the controller at
approximately 700 KB/s.
Also, you don't need a driver to get a USB mass storage device to work on the cRIO. Have a look at this document:
Utilizing Features of the USB Port on My cRIO-901x or My cFP-22xx Controller
Not sure if these issues are causing timeout errors. What happens when you transfer data at lower speeds? Do you get timeout errors then?

So I'd start with this: [Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509].
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: mdworker
If the AHT doesn't find anything, the mdworkder process is part of the indexing for Spotlight, among other things. I'd start by excluding all your drives/partitions from Spotlight indexing, via +System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.+
If that stops the problem, you know you've got a corrupted file or files somewhere. Verify your internal HD per #6 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).
If that finds and fixes anything, remove the Spotlight exclusion.
If it doesn't, I'd suggest downloading and installing the 10.6.5 "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Snow Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
If that doesn't help, reinstall OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc (that won't affect anything else), then apply the "combo" again.
If the problem persists, you'll have to use "Trial and Error" on the Spotlight exclusion to narrow down the location of the corrupted file(s). -
Frequent kernel crashing after 10.7.4
Yes, i know this has been discussed in many threads. Here's my story.
Early 2011 Macbook Pro (8,2).. was fast as **** when i got it with snow leopard. made one of the biggest mistakes of my life, upgrading to the worst operating system ever; mac os x lion. became considerably slow, and no i haven't tried a clean reinstall yet. not in the mood to go through all the hassle of backing up my apps then having them not work when i restore the backup and downloading them again.
Anyway, i think i've only had one kernel panic crash since then, which was random and normal i guess. that was sometime maybe in mid 2011. i recently upgraded my ram from 4 to 8gb (corsair) like i always did before with all my computers and i noticed how fast my mac was. it seemed perfect. i installed the recent thunderbolt update(s) that people have been getting kernel crashes with and everything was fine. no crashes. then came the dreaded 10.7.4, which i willingly installed (software update) since i've never had a problem with updates before. a while after, i kept getting kernel crashes but they weren't as frequent as they are now. maybe once or twice a week. as time passed, they continued to increase until today where i can't even use my mac for an hour without it crashing maybe 3-4 times. i can't do ANYTHING.
i tried to run AHT but when it connects to my wifi, i get a "!" icon over the earth icon, with "apple.com/support -1007D" or something under it, and nothing happens. i'm getting extremely sick of this and it's affecting my judgement about buying a new imac when they get upgraded soon. maybe switch to linux.
anyway, my mac just crashed after i started up cinema 4d, and i decided i'd use my first post here to post up my report and see if anyone can figure out what's wrong;

Kernel refuses my usb microphone after update
I guess the latest (or one of the latest) kernel update crashed the usb driver for my Blue Yeti USB microphone, it doesn't show up anymore in pulseaudio and isn't shown as a recognized usb device anymore:

Slow data transfere using card reader for PE8 on Win7 machine
I just migrated (reinstall) my PE8 on a new PC (from old WINXP SP2 to a high end WIN7 64 bit) .
I have a ordinary card reader (USB 2.0) for my SD,SDHC, and XD cards.
Everything works excellent on the new machine except for the data transfere rate. When collecting pictures, or videos for that matter, with PE8 Organizer. What takes minutes in my old XP machine takes hours (hours for real) in the new machine.
Since PE8 is a 32 bit app I have also tried on the new machine to change the compatibility for C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Elements Organize\PhotoDownloader.exe. I tested with running PhotoDownloader.exe just as on the old box winXP SP2 and SP3. But it made no difference.
I also looked in performance monitor. Nothing of interest. I had lots and lots of power left.
So..
Now I'm stuck. Both on the problem cause search. Or finding a solution. Anyone got any good ideas to make progress. My main overall objective is to look at the pictures and films. Not work with them as a hobby as such. (even if it is quite fun, but very time consuming. And time I do not have)
0. The vast majority of files are .mts and .jpg
1. Step one is to get them into PE8 organizer.
2. Batch organizing jobs like renaming, tagging, minor quick enanhcement etc

I hope this answer your question. My question is, do you have any idea how to solve the issue? -
Ever since I ran some software updates last week, my computer has been a mess. Safari, iTunes and Safari Web Processes have been consistently shutting down, and to top it off, I've been getting constant Kernel crashes. However, I have noted that if I turned off my wifi, everything seems to be running smoothly.
Here is my crash log. I'm getting desperate here now. If anyone can decipher this crash log, I will be grateful.

Kernel crashes & declining Apple service quality...?
I'm getting a little tired of my PBook falling apart little-by-little as each day passes by couple with declining Apple service quality.
I've been experiencing kernel crashes lately, where my mighty mouse will all of a sudden stop working, my entire comp will freeze up (approx 5min later) and then I'll get this grey and white message over inprinted on my screen asking me to "reboot" because "we're hanging here"... However, it doesn't happen all the time. Usually when I'm using a cpu or RAM intensive application (even apple proprietary apps).
As I mentioned above, I'm getting tired of all this happening because just two months earlier my computer would automatically go to sleep mode (even if I was in the middle of typing an email). The Apple Service guys chalked that one up to a poor cooling fan, replaced it, and unfortunately, my entire harddrive crashed as a result (all data was not recoverable).
I subsequently purchased an external harddrive because of my fleeting impression of Apple product and service quality.
Tomorrow I will take my PBook tomorrow to an Authorized Apple Service Provider (i.e. "MY MAC DEALER"). However, I know that they'll run the exact same hardware tests (i.e. TechTool and memtest, etc.) that I've already run, find nothing, and say that I owe them for service costs (because they found nothing). Then, I'll have to wait to catch another kernel crash, run down there and have them take me seriously. I'm getting a little fed up with all of this.
Additionally, when they replaced the fan on the original issue I was having, they put my PBook back together incorrectly so that it doesn't lie completely flat as it used to... I mean, it wobbles because one side it lower/higher than other sides (on the bottom). It's lop-sided. What kind of service quality is this?
I'm really hoping that someone at that massive corporation reads this email, takes ownership of the issue, contacts me, and re-affirms my reasoning for switching to apple from a pc. Because right now, I'm not seeing the extra dollars I've shelled out for an apple in service or product quality.
Other details: 3 year AppleCare still in effect.I agree - you need to call Apple directly if the repair shop is not authorized by Apple. I had a similar situation with an authorized dealer. After receiving the PB back from a repair the computer wouldn't lie flat on a table. I began to look further and noticed that it had been dropped. The weight of the PB falling - even a short distance - can cause it to become bowl-shaped. It was acting erratic, some ports didn't work, etc., so I contacted the shop and they took responsibility and replaced the case, motherboard, several components, and I have had no problems since. Sometimes technicians have accidents like everyone else, but the shop should take responsibility.

Lightroom v1.2 crashed my USB External HD in WinXP SP2 on network
Just thought I would post this.
Had a External USB HD that I was storing some files on, in Lightroom.
The Hard Drive was on a computer that was on a simple Peer to Peer, WinXP network workgroup.
Was doing "Moves" ... moving an entire Folder (within Lightroom) to another Hard Drive accross the Network. From my desktop HD to the external USB HD on another computer in the workgroup.
Was using v1.2 at the time ... all DNGs ... over 300 files.
Should have took the clue when it hung once. and I had to rebood the USB drive and re-establish my Mapped drives.
On the third try ... which I did not bother to watch because it was taking too long ... it crashed my USB 500gb WD MyBook Hard Drive. (too many bad sectors)
Good thing I had a back up ... problem was I still had to pay $800 for a disk restore because some of the files I needed was not on the back up and did not get mirrored. (The disk restore "did" get me all my files back)
* Now I am afraid that it might take down my NAS Mirrored (Network) Hard Drive (1tb WD MyBook NAS) ... so I move outside of Lightroom and just do a re-import.
What a pain.
Because:
I "like" to import via LR from my CF to my Local computer Hard Drive (Raid 0) and convert to DNG .. (which is faster than importing and converting to DNG direct to my NAS which is Raid 1) ... and then I would work on the DNGs on my "faster" local Hard Disk ... Then, when done and JPGs sent out ... I would move the files via LR to my NAS Hard Drive or a USB Hard Drive on another computer.
Now, I cannot trust LR to do this ... and I don't dare to do a "Move" in LR now to my main NAS 1tb Mirrored Hard Drive.
Hope v1.3 is better at this ... but I am "scared" to test it.Paul,
I am glad you replied to this post. Was nice to see how you "Gallery-up" on your Laptop and transfer that work to your Desktop. Need to try that (still not sure how that's done)
But, you have given me an "idea" on how I can safely move my DNG from Desktop to NAS (mirrored).
1) What I am going to do now is ... import from my CF to my desktop (Raid0) ... or Laptop if on the road (on the road I normally also keep a copy on my Wolverine 60gb external HD with CF reader) ... keeping the original RAWs on my CF as back up.
2) Normally I convert to DNG on import (because I do this when I am not around) ... I like DNGs :)
3) Work on files within LRv1.3 with files on my faster Desktop Drive (Raid0)
4) After all JPGs exported ... get "out" of LR and use File Manager (my fav is PowerDesk) to move the DNG to my NAS (Raid1)
5) *** Now I just got to figure how to move my "Folder" that is listed on my C: to the LR Folder on my NAS as a sub-folder of the Year ... 2007
All my shoot folders are by date: 2007-11-15
If I can "just" move this Folder ... within LR (and not have LR move the file (folder is now actually empty) ... ALL I would have to to next is go to Folder and have LR find file! (thus avoiding the long LR import again)
p.s. when I import and convert my RAWs to my Desktop computer the listing in LR is not in a sub-folder of "2007" .... ALL my folders in my NAS are organized by Year >>> then by Day and shoot.
Thank you for the help HG
fyi: this is my set up now.
Running LR on my Desktop(Raid0) and Laptop ...
Also have another Desktop with (Raid0) and a External HD 500gb and a 500gb internal. All are on a 1000 Network + Next N WiFi.
I have stoped "moving" images via LR to the other computers.
But, I do Import and convert to DNG (from a Sandisk CF reader/ use only Extreme IV 8gb and III CF) to BOTH my Main Desktop and my NAS ... with no problems. -
Kernel crash on trying to start from install CD
Has anyone experienced this? After (apparently successfully) installing Leopard, I discovered that the Kona 3 PCi card I have installed is not yet compatible. So I tried to return to Tiger. Everytime I try to start from my Tiger install disc I get a kernel crash with:
Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300 - Data access DAR=0x0000000000000000 PC=0x000000005546EF94
Latest crash info for cpu 0:

There's more... if anyone has any idea how to solve this problem and needs the rest of the screen I have a Jpeg I can send...
I fear something drastic has happened to my G5 but I'm sure it can be restored somehow
any help much appreciatedyes you would think it would be simple I agree but it hasn't been.... what I'm actually trying to do is return to Tiger as the Kona 3 card is not yet fully compatible with Leopard. This is part of a long saga for me. I even erased the hard disc completely and tried to start up from the DVD and still got the kernel panic. At one point I was able to boot from a firewire drive with an old version of 10.4 but I could not access everything I needed. I have tried to install from a retail DVD of Tiger install disc, I also tried with other Tiger install discs from colleagues but always got the kernel panic.
HOWEVER, today I reset the SMU (physically pressing the button http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341 ) Then I managed to find the install discs that came with the G5(Quad) and tried again and amazingly it worked. I did an archive and install and now, so far, have Tiger running again and my RAID array is functioning better again. -
So recently i've been getting lots of kernel crashes... Sometimes 2-3 every hour, sometimes i can use my computer for a few hours and then it crashes again... Could anyone check my log to identify the problem?

Kernel Crashes on iPhoto Movies
Lately, my MacBook Pro has been crashing with the updates of iPhoto and Mavericks almost continously when selecting movies in iPhoto. It is a kernel crash. Appears to be related to the graphics card. Any help greatly appreciated:

Mac OS version:
13A603You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It has a defective logic board that may be covered by this recall program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
