Kernel don't panic

Hi.
I have recently installed archlinux on my machine by network instalation.
Since then I am running and I can't get rid of the " don't panic " kernel.
I have updated the databases and all but shoudn't it change by default?
Regards,
/Dex.

    Installation feedback:
    I installed Arch in virtualbox on a Windows XP host and after it initially hung up on boot (enabling acpi and apic was necessary), everything worked fine.
    I was very pleased to see the pacman mirror selection dialog, apart from a "missing" pacman -Sy (I wondered why I couldn't install xfce4...everything was set up perfectly and it took me a while until I realized, that the local package database only includes the current repository) there was no need for post-configuration for the base system. I haven't checked for rankmirrors this time, but
    Setting up X and xfce4 was done quickly and I had no further problems.
    I was using the FTP-install-image.
    Edit: Stay away from Safari for windows, it will not send or copy text fields containing a '[' or ']', it just cuts away everything following this character.

  • "Don't Panic" paniced on first boot

    I thought this was kind of funny, I upgraded to the new kernel (and thus to "Don't Panic") and after a reboot I was greeted with a kernel panic... It was easily solved by defining "rootfstype=" kernel parameter but it was kind of ironic

    It is called don't panic, isnt it ? Dont worry

  • Kernel traps and panics

    My MacPro running 10.5.3 has started to get kernel traps and panics, usually while doing something with Firefox. Apple support was pretty useless.
    I looked at my system logs and found:
    4/26/08 2:17:39 PM com.apple.launchctl.System[2] launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /etc/mach_init.d/chum.plist
    4/26/08 2:17:39 PM com.apple.launchctl.System[2] launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisoryd.plist
    4/26/08 2:17:39 PM com.apple.launchctl.System[2] launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /etc/mach_init.d/pilotfish.plist
    4/26/08 2:17:39 PM com.apple.launchctl.System[2] launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /etc/mach_init.d/SymSharedSettings.plist
    What do these mean? How do I fix them?
    I am open to any other ideas too.

    I do not know what the log entries mean but what have you done with the computer lately? Have you installed any new applications like Hacks that show up under "Other" in System Preferences if so remove them including Application Enhancer. How about ram? If you have added ram try reinstalling the original ram.

  • "Don't Panic" + scim

    Well, I decided to change the OS on one of my computers from Ubuntu to Arch, after the install I did pacman -Syu and found that I'm using the "newer" version "Don't Sweat". Cool.... but.
    Scim usually installs easily using the instructions from the archlinux website:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sma … d_platform
    This time it's a no go. I have Korean (hangul) input working fine so long as my LC_CTYPE is set to ko_KR.utf-8. This however makes the panels and  titlebars absolutely HUGE. I mean almost 40px titlebars are big enough for the blind to see. What gives? Any ideas or is this some sort of bug in "Don't Panic"?
    Last edited by necrolin (2007-08-02 14:41:54)

    OK, so I was playing with the system and I noticed something strange which is probably related. When I have my LC_CTYPE set at en_US.UTF-8 then I have Korean fonts listed when I go into the change font dialog, but SCIM doesn't work.... erghhhh.
    When I change LC_CTYPE to ko_KR.UTF-8 then my Korean fonts disappear from the listings and I get Chinese fonts listed????!!!! And SCIM works, but the screen is all messed up because it's leaving too much space for the fonts. Example, in the terminal everything looks double or even triple spaced.
    Any ideas?

  • Kernel oops, then panic, then catastrophic crash when using ethernet

    I'm running arch on my laptop, using netcfg to manage networks. I can connect with no problems using wireless, to any kind of wireless network, which is what I've been doing most of the time, as my house until recently only had wireless in the first place.
    A few months ago I was at a friend's house, and we hooked up my computer to their wired internet. Within about a minute or two, while I was still in tty1, the screen flickered briefly, dumped out a bunch of messages (three or so, I didn't get a chance to look clearly) that said "uuuhhhh... Dazed and trying to continue." Then it did a panic, and dumped the panic message. About a second after that, the screen became frenetic and staticy and it starting blurring and stretching the display (hopefully someone else knows what I'm talking about because i can't really describe it any better). Never before have I had THAT part happen on a kernel panic.
    I just ignored it because wireless works fine, so I figured maybe something was odd about their network. That was a few months ago.
    Recently I installed wired connections in my own house and connected it... Same thing. Every time. It could take thirty seconds to happen, it could wait about twenty minutes... But eventually, the computer WILL go down.
    I thought it might have something to do with hardware interrupts, because when I logged dmesg and tried to make it happen again it kept mentioning irqs and PS1 (my mouse i think). But I don't know. It doesn't mention a panic in the log, nor an oops... Nothing. The log just ends.
    Here is a link to the file I dumped it into: http://pastebin.com/kXp3P3GG
    Anything else I should check?

    Edit: There's a good chance this belongs in hardware.

    So I tried upgrading my BIOS with a CD i got from the toshiba website. I tried numerous different kernel options... Turning off ACPI in various ways (pci=noacpi, acpi=noirq...) prevent it from crashing but disable network access.
    I did notice a more clear look at the oops. It said that it was due to "unknown reason 3d." Does that mean anything? And it said "do you have a strange power management setup?" or something very like that. I do have laptop-mode-utils installed, but I don't see any mention of any problem like this around the documentation of laptopmodeutils. Is that a possibility?
    Does it make sense to install something like irqbalance, or isapnp? Does that have any chance of changing anything?
    Also, I don't know if it's normal but when I boot the usual way, and then cat /proc/interrupts, I get:
    CPU0 CPU1

    1: 76 3990 IO-APIC-edge i8042

    Then if I plug in the ethernet (still booted the normal way) it adds a line directly below radeon (video card) that says 41 blah blah PCI-MSI=edge eth0 where blah blah are numbers. These are the only two devices like that, but I don't know if that's normal.
    I'm grateful for the help.
    Thanks,

  • My kernel had a panic attack...

    Hello,
    I recently sent my iBook G4 in to be serviced for a problem with the mouse button. (They replaced the top half of it..) I have been using my half new computer for about a month and now somthing went horribly wrong...
    I bought an Airport Express to get a wireless network. I tried to install it by inserting the cd that came with it... The computer froze while installing the airport driver. I forced shutdown. When I went to restart it, the gray wheel kept spinning and spinning until it eventually froze. I tried booting from the mac osx cd, then the real trouble started. I got a screen with a page of code and the words
    "Panic: We are hanging here..."
    At the bottom... I guess my computer had a panic attack..
    I started in single user mode and did a fsck in hopes of somthing, but it returned an error saying that it could not repair the volume... I then tried everything, resetting the PMU, imaging the install DVD to an external HD, running the hardware diagnostic (which froze), and then got angry and pouted for a few minutes...
    I am going to bring the computer into the genius bar tomorrow, but I really HATE these issues.... PLEASE, HELLPPPP MMMEEEEEEEEEE!!!

    KPs are usually associated with hardware problems. Here's some KP troubleshooting links.

  • Nested If...Else blocks in PixelBender Kernel Don't Work in Flash Player?

    I'm writing a kernel which has a several conditional steps.  It contains a structure like the following:
    if(condition)
    dst = outputA;
    else
       if(anotherCondition)
          dst = outputB;
       else
          if(yetAnotherCondition)
              dst = outputC;
          else
             dst = outputD
    I realize that this is a bit ugly, and that conditionals are already less than ideal for a kernel (and nested conditionals even less ideal), however, it does seem to work in the PixelBender Toolkit environment itself when I run the filter.  It will also export as a pbj for Flash without any objections from the Toolkit.  However, when I run the filter in Flash it seems to do... nothing.  When I strip out the nested conditionals, I will at least see the first if / else level working, but with nested conditionals, everything seems to be ignored and the kernel doesn't run at all within Flash Player.
    Is this a bug?  Has anyone else successfully used nested conditional blocks in a PixelBender kernel running inside Flash Player?

    This is fixed in version 2.0 of the Pixel Bender toolkit which will be up soon at the Pixel Bender Developer Network (http://www.adobe.com/devnet/pixelbender/).
    The Pixel Bender 2.0 toolkit is also installed with CS5 AE or Flash Pro or any suite that includes either of those applications.

  • Corrupt boot-archive? Don't panic :-)

    One of my Solaris 10 (update 05) servers runs on a piece of HP hardware, which seems to have some sort of memory error which every now and then causes the box to panic.
    After a panic today, the system wouldn't boot, instead it complained about the boot-archive being corrupt, and its gzip-checksum being incorrect.
    To solve it i booted into the failsafe mode, which worked, from there i mounted the /a partition and tried to run:
    bootadm update-archive -R /a
    which returned without any errors within a second. However it didn't actually update the boot archive.
    My guess is that the boot-archive (which seemed of a reasonable size) was so corrupted that the bootadm update-archive couldn't read it, and apparently, if it cant be read, it wont return any error nor fix it.
    I also tried to move the old boot_archive to a new location and re-run bootadm update-archive, but that didn't work either since the archive didn't exist.
    The solution in the end was to rename the boot-archive:
    mv /a/platform/i86pc/boot_archive /a/platform/i86pc/corrupt_b_archive
    and then reboot the machine into failsafe-mode again, upon booting into failsafe mode a second time, it discovered that the disk didn't have a boot-archive, and created one for me.
    After this i just had to reboot and now the system booted normally.
    Hope this helps someone someday.. :-)
    .7/M.

    Thanks for the info. One question: I've tried to boot to failsafe several times on two different machines running Solaris 10 u8 x86 on HP hardware, but it never works. I have /var as a separate data set - does your system? I seem to remember a bug mentioned where this is a problem with /var as a separate dataset?

  • IMac 1TB drive replacement program: notifications sent in error (don't panic)

    An hour ago I received a note like this:
    Dear Apple Customer,
    Product Serial Number(s): XXXXXX
    Case ID: 11111
    Follow Up Number: 1111
    Thank you for submitting a refund request. We need a repair receipt and banking details to complete your refund.
    Please contact the service center that replaced your hard drive and obtain a receipt, if you do not already have it.
    Reply to this email and attach a scan of the receipt. Do not change the subject line.
    This made me unhappy, as I thought I'd completed the refund request process for my defective drive two weeks ago.
    I wrote a snarky blog post, posted a question here that was removed for violating posting rules (guilty), and replied to the email with a complaint. Then I received this note:
    Dear Apple Customer,
    The prior communication you received from Apple stating the need for additional information was in error.
    We completed your refund for a hard drive replacement as part of the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program.
    Refund Amount: 281.25
    Credit Memo Number: 111111
    Case ID: 11111
    Follow Up Number: 111111
    You will receive your refund in four-to-six weeks.
    So the original notice was a mistake. I assume I'm not the only person who got it. If you got the notice, and haven't received a correction, try replying and ask if it was sent in error.

    Thanks for the report!

  • Why did I have a kernel panic?

    I was in the process of disconnecting my Nikon D40 (a procedure I have done many times without incident). Usually I shut the camera off and pull out the USB connector once the volume disappears from my desktop, with no problem. This time, as soon as I shut off the camera, I got a strange "You must restart your computer" message I'd never seen before (I've had the computer almost 3 years). Discovered this was a "kernel panic" message.
    Why did my computer do this? The only thing that's changed on it recently is that I installed Adobe Air although I don't believe I was running any Air applications at the time. At the time I was running Photoshop Elements, Nikon Picture Project, Firefox and a feed reader called Feedpopper. Again I have run all these programs without trouble for several years.
    Here is the message from panic.log:

    Perhaps try it again and see if it was just a bad alignment of the planets last time. You could also post more of the log to see which thread it was that actually crashed and what was happening. In the meantime this will keep you busy:

  • Mid 2010 13-inch MBP kernel panics

    I started having kernel panics maybe about a year ago.  It used to be very sporadically but now it's happening more often (the last three within a week of each other I think).  The computer is also fairly slow nowadays.  I ran the Apple Hardware Test and everything was okay and also downloaded and ran MemTest and it was fine.  The Kernel Panic errors seem to always have this mutex/spinlock error as seen below.  I'm not doing anything particular or intensive when they happen.  One time it happened when it was idle.  The Genuis said I multitask too much but I don't think so and I normally don't run too many things that should stress the memory.  Usually have Thunderbird, Firefox, Chrome, iTunes, Preview, Adobe Reader open and some non-intensive program.

    Kernel panics are usually caused by hardware issues.  Make sure all of your hardware peripherals (drivers) are up to date if applicable.
    Try the suggestions in articles - Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts
    Kernel Panics? Don't panic too!
    "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) message appears (Mac OS X v10.5, 10.6)

  • Kernel panic during or immediately after startup

    We have an ibook G4 running tiger (can't get to see which version now as I can't get beyond the login page). Nothing has changed today as far as I know, but my partner was using it, not me.
    He first got a kernel panic message (the 'you need to restart your computer' box) when trying to use airport, then when he restarted the message turned up part way through start up.
    I've done the PRAM reset procedure at the beginning of start up, which helped the first time, but after another hour or so use, the restart message popped up again, and after that restart, the kernel panic message appeared at the login page.
    Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Ok, I thought I had my problem solved, but it seems that there are still problems with this machine. Mom and sister complain that it has kernel panics several times a day. I honestly haven;t been using it since I bought myself a G5. But here is the report it gives me on the kernel panic.

    When is this happening? What are they doing? Specific log reference to thread that crashed? I do see reference to USB but it's not clear if this is associated.
    KPs are often hardware, but not exclusively. It would be nice to narrow it down to either hardware or software.
