Kernel Error on Boot, wont Start up

So i was updating the new updates for my macbook (Has Tiger, not leopard) and after the updates it restarted. Upon booting, it loaded the apple logo and that little spinner then it just went into the kernel panic mode. I tried inserting the Mac OS X CD and it wont start up on it. I took out the batter and pressed the power button to take out any electrical power. Still didnt boot. I then pushed cmd+s to go into the single user mode and it also paniced on me, but luckily i was able to take a picture of it clearly. Heres the pic:

anyone know what the heck all that means?

Ahhh, be careful now. Just make sure you know what sort of drive you have. Go to the Apple logo in your menu bar and click "About this Mac" and then click "More info".
Is your hard drive under ATA or Serial-ATA? The former needs an IDE adapter, and the latter needs a SATA adapter. The really important part is making sure you get one designed for laptop drives, otherwise it won't fit.
I think you have a SATA drive, so here is a laptop SATA one for $20 + shipping:

  • Disk error, Macbook Pro wont start up...

    Hey everyone,
So unfortunately today I joined the victims of this I/O error which all started when I attempted to select a wireless access point then the beach ball came up, next thing I knew the computer was frozen, then the mouse.....then off it went and it has yet to come back.
I've tried to research for the past 3 hours and I've come to these points:
So upon safe start the computer shuts down as soon as the message on the bottom picture shows up...I don't know if that means anything but I think it relates to the air port...
Next, I went in to terminal which is the first picture and kept receiving this disk0s2: I/O error. **The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely.  And it was everytime after the **Checking catalog file.
Upon doing some reading I seem to get the vibe that its a hardware malfunction more than anything, NO I did not have my stuff backed up, so does this mean I'm SOL if I don't want to pay out the *** for someone else to fix my problem or backup my data.
Please let me know anything you can to help me out I would greatly appreciate it!

    MyKnee,
if you have access to a FireWire 800 cable and a second Mac with a FireWire 800 port, you can try booting your Mac into Target Disk mode to see if it can be treated as an external hard drive from the second Mac. If so, you can try copying your personal files to the second Mac.
Alternatively, if you have an external disk enclosure or a SATA-to-USB or SATA-to-FireWire adapter, you can try removing your internal disk to see if you can boot from it externally. If it’s repairable through Disk Utility externally but non-repairable internally, then that might point to your internal SATA cable as being faulty.
If you’re unwilling or unable to either fix your problem yourself, back up your own files, or have someone else do so for you, then yes, you’d be SOL. This is where the value is found in making backups — to avoid SOL scenarios like this.

  • BUG: Degraded performance, unresponsive system, syslog flooded with IOUserClient.cpp kernel errors when Time Machine starts (10.8.5 Server)

Every couple of months, my 2009 Mac Mini becomes suddenly unresponsive to Screen Sharing, Remote Desktop, AFP/SMB connections, VPN connections, and even SSH logins.  It was still pingable, and the router showed many active network connections from an application that I knew was still running on it.
It is a headless machine, so the only way I can gain control is to manually reboot.
The Time Machine volume is an iSCSI target on a Synology DS412+ connected from the Mac by GlobalSAN's iSCSI Initiator v5.2.0.429.  I am using iSCSI because of poor performance using Time Machine directly over AFP.
I looked at the logs this time and found a direct link between the starting of the backupd service and the appearance of these log entries.  It has happened once every hour for the last 7 days.

Thanks a lot for this really quick reply.
When you say: "I would though go back to 7.5.2 firmware." Do you mean a reset to factory default ?
    Greetz
NO, your time capsule is running 7.6.1 but it is built with AFP following increased security for LION.. that is not required or available in Leopard.. so there is no point.. it is also not as stable on the older hardware.. at least in my experience.. I have repaired about 200 of the suckers so I do see a few.
When you select firmware update in the airport utility.. hold the option key.. all valid firmware versions for your TC then show up.. not only upgrades.. select 7.5.2 and upgrade to that.
Do a factory reset when you do it is a good idea though.. start off again.
And do reset of TM.. A4 in pondini.
    See if it helps.
Oh, the TC will continually complain about needing a firmware update.. turn off automatic checking of updates.. it will still annoy you for fun every few weeks but that is better than daily.

    Hi
    Welcome to Apple discussions
My first iBook suffered from persistent KPs on start up. Eventually I resolved the issue by cleaning the cache files. There are a number of cheap/free share ware apps. My favourite is Tiger (or Leopard) Cache Cleaner from here: http://www.northernsoftworks.com/
For more general info on resolving KPs, try here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
    Good luck

  • Itunes wont start and i get no error messages

i just downloaded itunes 7.3 and itunes wont start any ideas how to fix?

Okay. I'm still wondering about your firewall. A "persistent" iTunes.exe in your processes is most consistent with a firewall blocking iTunes, iTunesHelper and/or QuickTime from accessing the Internet. (Norton Internet Security 2005 is by far the worst offender in this regard, but it can be produced both other firewalls too.)
Head into the Firewalls settings and make sure that iTunes, iTunesHelper, and QuickTime are all being allowed full access to the internet.
If iTunes still doesn't launch after making sure the firewall is correctly adjusted, reboot the PC and try the suggestion from the following document. (It's a much rarer issue, but it can also produce that persistent iTunes.exe symptom in conjunction with an error-message-free iTunes launch failure.)
iTunes for Windows doesn't open after upgrading

  • Critical Kernel error while on windows partition, now neither mac or windows will boot help ?

Hi I was on my windows side of my mac when i got the blue-screen-of-death with something saying Critical Kernel Error, weird noises from the speakers and the macbook pro did a hard shut off.
Since then I can no longer boot into the mac or windows side (both are stuck infinitely loading). I ran disk utility on the mac side and I have an "Invalid Node Structure." Which disk utility cannot repair. I do have DiskWarrior on another mac to try and rebuild the mac partition through a firewire connection - i think that is the correct course of action ?
But does this mean my windows partition is likely gone or any idea what went on ? As I am terribly confused that while on my windows side I had an error that messsed up both partitions.
Or what to check for so this hopefully doesnt happen again if it is a hardware problem? My drive smart status is listed as "OK" and I cant seem to run the Apple Hardware test as upon attempting to get into it the laptop just shuts off while loading it, although I read somewhere the Apple Hardware test is no longer preloaded on macbook pros.
The system in question is a 15" macbook pro bought around July 2011.
    Thank you,
    Wes

Alright I have both my mac side and windows side repaired and functioning fine. Should I still be concerned ? Linc I know you are saying this is a drive malfunction but is there a way I can be sure ? I still cannot run AHT (restart, hold down D), and my laptop shipped with Lion installed so I believe it should run. It just boots into the mac side when I hold D..

    Read http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694#

  • Kernel panics at boot--starts after 10 restarts--weird AHT results

I'm a long-time Mac user although I don't have as much OSX experience as I did with 6,7,8 and 9.
I have a just-over-one-year-old (of course) iMac G5 20" 1.8ghz. In the past few weeks it started suddenly darkening the screen and display a message saying it needed to restart randomly. Sometimes while being used actively, sometimes while just sitting there. I thought about it maybe being a RAM problem given the nature of the crashes but it was so infrequent that I decided it was more likely a software problem, and put it on my "to deal with later" list.
But now it's started doing that or displaying the "Unix-text-overlaid-on-the-screen" panics during startup. Once it's on and running (usually after half a dozen false-starts) it seems to be basically OK unless it goes to sleep, at which point it does the same thing on awakening. It does still crash on occasion after starting up but not usually. Takes a good 10 minutes of restarts to get it going in the morning, though -- almost like it has to "warm up" or something.
I ran the Hardware Test from the CD and it reported an error in the RAM. Originally came with 1 GB from Apple, so I pulled the offending chip from the slot that AHT named, the problem seemed to go away, hardware test reported no problems, so I thought OK I'll just buy 2 GB and upgrade while I fix it.
Did that and got the same problems. Hardware test reported RAM problems again but with the other slot this time -- with two brand new RAM chips. All of these chips test out fine in a PC with the same RAM specs using MemTest86+, including the original Apple RAM. (all 400mhz 184-pin DIMM CL3 from good vendors) I've tried half a dozen configurations moving known-good RAM in and out of the machines I have available, and it now seems completely random -- sometimes even the original RAM passes hardware test on that machine, the same RAM that initially failed it. I even bought 2GB of brand new RAM with the same results. All of this RAM works just fine in two PCs under heavy use.
It even gives the error while trying to start off a CD (i.e. the Tiger install disk), although I don't think it's ever done it while starting from the Hardware Test disk (but it may have always been "warm" by the time I got to that...)
So I don't think it's actually a RAM problem, but that's the only info Hardware Test will give me.
I've tried resetting PRAM, resetting the Open Firmware, resetting the SMU, no luck (all based on advice from other threads here). Repaired disk permissions, did a full disk repair while booted off a Tiger install disk. Safe mode does the same thing.
    Any ideas?
Couldn't this have happened a month ago while it was still under warranty? (rhetorical!)
I take it buying the extended AppleCare warranty now won't help me with this issue?

    Tom,
what a pain eh? Same thing happened with me, turned out being my logic board. Thankfully it occured a few months before my warrant expired. My logic board messed up again after my warranty expired, although it was covered because it was the same issue as when I brought it in the last time.
    hope this helps,
    ed

itunes wont install, runtime error R6034 also 'apple mobile device' wont start! help!

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • Brand New Imac 20": Kernel error on normal start up.

I have a Imac G5 with bluetooth keyboard and mouse (just moved from pc to mac) . I took it out of the box and just after it ended the setup it said that had losted connection with the mouse and keyboard and froze, i had to rebot it and since then it starts up and after a little while crashes and give me the kernel error. I tried to reinstall the os and software but it keeps with the same problem (in the installation when it is using the second disk and its installing the bundled software, it shows the kernel sign).
When i start up in safe mode the Imac acts just fine, the keyboard and mouse work just fine and the sistem doesnt crash or give me the kernel sign. All the software and internet connection works just fine. I only losse the sound, Isight (in normal mode it crashes with or without the Isight) and airport (all factory installed).
Please help me, i moved from pc looking for peace of mind and it has been difficult with this problem.

    Hello Sandra:
Since your Mac is so new, I suggest you call Applecare and have the people there help trouble shoot your problem. It could be a hardware problem also.
You were right to switch. Macs are, for the most part, trouble free.
