Kernel-firmware package
I compiled the whole kernel package for OEL5.7.
But on installing the RPM, I get this error:
rpm -vih /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/x86_64/kernel-uek-2.6.32-200.20.1uek.x86_64.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
kernel-firmware >= 2.6.32-200.20.1uek is needed by
kernel-uek-2.6.32-200.20.1uek.x86_64
Yet I see no kernel-firmware package that was compiled into an RPM
as part of this. I compiled using:
rpmbuild -ba --target x86_64 kernel-uek.rpm
Any ideas? How do I get and compile the kernel-firmware package?

I have a have question about the linux-firmware package in the repo.
Recently there was an update for this package and when I checked its contents I saw that it also updates rt2870usb-fw.
Maybe I am a bit confused about the all kernel modules / firmware, but since I need to compile the latest kernel (linux-mainline from AUR) to get my buffalo wireless usb work(my rt2870 is supported from rc4), would it be possible to update only this package and use the kernel in the arch repo?
I can't test it myself because I am out of town for while.

I have some problems with kernel firmware (2.6.33-1 from testing). On boot an error appears:
[drm:rv770_startup] *ERROR* Failed to load firmware!
My video card is ATI Radeon HD4570.
X.org server is booting normally, without errors, but i haven't 3d acceleration in games etc...
Any ideas?

can i assign service-profiles having three different host firmware versions
Server1 - host firmware 1.1.1j-- win2k8
server2 -host firmware 1.4.1m -- RHEL 5.6 ( OS)

How would I create kernel devel package for OVM3.2.1 ?
I am new to OVM SDK ..Please help me to understand how to create kernel devel package for OVM3.2.1 ?
I tried below command "rpmbuild --rebuild kernel-uek...src.rpm" on my OEL5.9 machine. It throw few errors w.r.t KaBI checks fails.
Is there hard rule to run above command only on OVM 3.2.1 SDK template ? I am going to try that now, but it will be good to know limitation/assumption on OVM 3.2.1.

Since these packages are well thought out and seperate the kernel module from the userland files necessary to run ATI-drivers, I feel that they're a better solution than the packages I have created and presented in this thread. As such, I strongly suggest you use the packages available in the official repos now. While I will not immediately remove the files I have hosted for these packages, I will no longer be maintaining them.

Well, as brought up recently in the ati-drivers-arch thread, the way we handle ATI's drivers and Nvidia's drivers is a little different... the officially packaged Nvidia drivers actually build the kernel module on the user's machine, during install time, making it an essentually kernel-independent package. The ATI drivers in community, however, build the module at makepkg time, which ties each package to a specific kernel version.
I personally thought the Nvidia way was a good way.
Therefore, I have decided to make packages that are kernel-independant in the same way nvidia's are -- here they are.
Note: Since creating these, I've been informed that this is not an ideal Arch-way to make packages; read on in this thread for details. In case you want a prebuilt fglrx package, which is dependant on a particular kernel and compiles the driver at build-time instead of install-time, for use with Xorg 7, see this Wiki page: ATI fglrx and Xorg 7

I have tested, and am currently using, the Xorg 7 package linked here with kernel26-archck 2.6.15 from [community] with no noticeable problems.
Additionally, for the Xorg 7 package to work, you'll probably have to create a symlink from /usr/X11R6/lib/modules -> /usr/lib/xorg/modules.
If /usr/X11R6/lib/modules already exists, copy its contents to /usr/lib/xorg/modules, remove it
rm -r /usr/X11R6/lib/modules
then make the link
ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules /usr/X11R6/lib/modules
-------Installing Additional Kernel Modules-------
The packages now install a shell script in /opt/ati to facilitate installation of the kernel module for multiple kernels. The kernel module is automatically built and installed for whichever kernel you are running when you install the package, but if you want to install it for additional kernels, follow these steps:
Boot into the kernel you want to install the module for.
Execute:
$ cd /opt/ati
$ ./fglrx_module_setup.sh install
and the script will do the rest. As a bonus, when you uninstall the ati-drivers package, the script will remember which kernels it installed the module for and remove every module, leaving your system sparkling-clean.
If you update your driver in the future, you should be able to run
$ cd /opt/ati
$ ./fglrx_module_setup.sh reinstall
and, if I've done it right (this is untested) it should reinstall the module for every kernel on which it's been previously installed.

Firmware Package best pratices... ???

I do not understand the advantage(s) to use a host firmware policies.
It seems to me that it is more flexible to upgrades endpoints for each server with apply a maintenance policy "Uer Ack" in order to get "Pending Activies" for servers which need a reboot when we need tp upgrade firmware.
What is the best practices ?
I could see that Management Firmware Package is not longer supported with UCS 2.1 ; all firmware package are drived via Hist Firmware Packages.
Last question, why do we have 2 package version for Set Bundle :
2.1(1a)A/2.1(1a)B, 2.0(3c)A/2.0(3c)B and so on..

Nicolas.Host firmware package policies are nice because you can guarantee that all server level firmware is the same for every server in the system. Another advantage is when new servers are added. If you install a new server it is probably going to come with a different firmware than your other servers but if you have a Host Firmware package assigned to a Service Profile template and you create a Service Profile for the new server from that template the new server will match your other servers.
Host firmware package policies are the only way to upgrade the BIOS of a server.
As for the bundles, all infrastructure components (FIs, IOM, UCSM) will be the .A and all server level firmware for B-Series will be the .B. C-Series will be .C -
Board Controller not updated with Host Firmware Package

What happens is that the downgrade is not supported... if you try yo do it manually through a SSH session, the system will tell you "downgrade is not supported"
Try the commands (for future users, you may know them already ):
# scope server X/Y (chassis X blade Y)

# show image (this will list all of the firmware versions)
# activate firmware version.0 force (Select a lower version than the one already running)

Reasonable to have compile kernel + source package?
Most modules require the kernel sources in order to compile, and I thought it would be nice to have the kernel sources used for the stock kernels available as a package. I know it's possible to use the abs or to download the kernel from kernel.org, but then you must go through the hassle of compiling the same kernel.
This isn't a big deal, just a nice kernel thing to have.

What does that have to do with anything under discussion? We're talking about the kernel binary + kernel headers. If you compile your own kernel of a different version, then OF COURSE your headers will be different, unless you install the headers with your new kernel as the PKGBUILD does - if you compile a new kernel because you feel the release speed isn't fast enough, do you really thing a new kernel-headers package is going to release any faster?
using the default arch package, the kernel binary and headers are provided. If you want to compile your own kernel, fine, do that - just provide your own headers in that case - it's not hard.

abs is a bash script... there's no possible way it could fail unless:
a) you don't have cvsup installed (abs will spit out a big fat error saying "install cvsup" if you don't)

I am trying to create a new host firmware pakage for version 2.1.(1a).
I was able to find right hardwares for Aadpter, CIMC, BIOS, and storage but couldn't find right one for board controller.
We are using B200 M3 but not listed under the tab. (see attached imgae).
Do you know what is the best practice?
Choose all available hardware or just choose what actually installed?
I only chose follwing items under their respective tab.
for adapters - UCSB-MLOM-40G-01, UCS-VIC-M82-8P
for storage - LSI MegaRaid SAS 2004 ROMB
for bios and cimc - UCSB-B200-M3
But couldn't find matchin PID for B200 M3.

The B200's don't have board controller FW. Not necessary. You're not missing anything. Only the platforms listed in the "Board Controller" section of the FW policy tab require them.

[SOLVED] Two Questions about b43-firmware AUR Package
Hi. On my old laptop, my wifi adapter worked out-of-the-box / no extra driver installation required. On my new laptop I have the Broadcom BCM43228 wi-fi adapter. Up to this point I have just been using the proprietary broadcom-wl driver, which has worked fine but it has been annoying having to rebuild (that is: install latest linux-headers, run makepkg) and reinstall broadcom-wl every time the linux kernel is upgraded. I discovered that the open-source b43 firmware recently added support for the chip. So I have two questions...
1. With b43, would I still need to rebuild/reinstall the package every time the kernel is upgraded?
2. Is there any way to know if the linux kernel will integrate b43 some day? Is this something that happens? I'm assuming it must be because I didn't have to install anything extra to use the wi-fi adapter on my old laptop. Maybe there's some schedule online of when the linux kernel developers intend to integrate open-source drivers/firmware directly into the kernel?

It's not firmware that added support, it's the driver.
driver = code that runs in the kernel
firmware = code that runs on the device itself

Nope, the firmware isn't tied to a particular kernel.

The kernel does have b43 integrated. What the package installs isn't the driver, it's the firmware that gets uploaded onto the wifi card.
A lot of firmware is distributed in the linux-firmware package. However this requires that the firmware is released under a license that allows redistribution. But the b43 firmware isn't redistributable, that's why you need to get it from AUR.

/lib/firmware conflicts with custom kernel
Hi, I followed the Wiki's guide to ABS building of a custom kernel. Normally I wouldn't care too much if it was maintained by pacman or not, but sadly it HAS to be for the nvidia driver to properly work (and probably my wireless driver's firmware package too..)
It built fine and made the package, but when I go to install it I get file conflicts from kernel26-firmare in /lib/firmware
Do I just disable all kernel firmware in menuconfig and let the kernel26-firmware package handle that?Please B, because I never boot with arch kernel26, is it safe to just pacman -R kernel26 ???

Firmware Management and Deleting Images/Packages
I was trying to delete some older firmware packages and was wondering if anyone had an easier way to remove the associated images. If you simply remove a package and the image is still there you get all sorts of Major warnings (image-deleted).
It would be much easier if you delete an old package ie. ucs-k9-bundle-b-series.2.0.4b.B.bin that is automatically deletes it's related Image so these errors don't appear, especially if you have upgraded a few times.

Package empty in default host firmware

I received this minor error and do not Know what is thisHi Amr,
The reason you see this message is because you have the "Firmware Auto Sync Server policy" set to "auto Acknowledge" or "User Acknowledge" (see screenshot below) and the default host firmware package policy has some empty values. To clear this fault you can fill out the empty values in the default host firmware policy or what I would recommend is to set the "Firmware Auto Sync Server policy" to "No Actions".

[solved] Makepkg fails to sign package w/o asking password.
I'm not sure when exactly this issue really started happening, but it was somewhere around the time that the new versions of Pacman and gnupg came out (a few weeks).
I have a local ~/.makepkg.conf configured to sign any package I build with my key. The issue is that once any package completes building, and it is ready to be signed, I will sometimes be presented with a Pinentry screen to enter my password for signing the package and sometimes it will just fail to sign the package without ever asking for my password. There is no indication as to why it failed in the terminal output nor in the journal.
This is happening on both of my Arch systems, so I know it's not just a localized issue with my one computer.

JanOk, thanks. My confusion was because I was unaware that makepkg was simply a bash script.
I did what you suggested, and copied it to my home directory, edited the create_signature section to add the --verbose option and changed it to output to stdout. I added --verbose, --debug-level guru, and --log-file options to my gpg-agent.conf file. I ran the makepkg process twice, and as expected it asked for a password the first attempt and failed immediately on the second attempt. When it should be loading a cached password, it is bombing out with a "Broken pipe" error.
