Kernel freeze after user mount

Hi,
I'm having some kind of problem trying mounting CD, DVD etc (blank media or already recorded)
I put the disk into the device, try to mount (typing the command in a konsole, user id, not root) and everything freezes. Nothing answer, even ssh (to try to shut it down from other computer).
It doesn't happened all the time, but I'm don't have learn the pattern yet.
I have kernel kernel26 2.6.19.2-1, dbus 1.0.2-3, util-linux 2.12-10, ... updated according to pacman -Syu
I've searched logs in /var/log and nothing (nothing in errors.log, kernel.log, acpi, syslog.log ...
Does anyone have a similar problem?
Regards,
Peibol.

Hi,
just in case anyone else stumbles upon this post, here is what I did. No idea weather it is the correct way, but it works for me:
maximilian@kaul_mba ~ $ ls -lah /usr/local/bin/startup.sh
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 323 Apr 8 21:32 /usr/local/bin/startup.sh
maximilian@kaul_mba ~ $ cat /usr/local/bin/startup.sh
#!/bin/bash
# mount dropbox
/usr/bin/mount -t ecryptfs /home/dropbox/Dropbox/Encrypted /home/maximilian/SYNC
# /home/maximilian/.cache to ram
/usr/bin/mount -t tmpfs -o size=25%,uid=maximilian,gid=maximilian,mode=1755 tmpfs /home/maximilian/.cache/
# kill dropbox => icon fix
/usr/bin/sleep 10 && /usr/bin/pkill dropbox
maximilian@kaul_mba ~ $ sudo cat /etc/sudoers | grep startup
# allow startup.sh without passwd
maximilian ALL = (root) NOPASSWD: /usr/local/bin/startup.sh
and I placed the line
sudo /usr/local/bin/startup.sh &
into my .xinitrc.
I'm still interested in other solutions for this problem.

  • 10.5.1 Freezes after/during mounting image.

I have started to have this problem AFTER the installation of the 10.5.1 update: Leopard (especially with smaller DMG image files) will hard-lock (temporarily) when finishing up the mount on the image file. EVERYTHING locks - I can't change programs, click anything on the dock and everything appears to cease to function altogether. This occurs for anywhere from 20 seconds in upwards of 3-5 minutes. I don't, generally, have this problem with DMG files that are at least 50mb or more, but have it on EVERY file that is 10mb or smaller.
    Ideas?

Repair permissions with Disk Utility. If the problem persists, manually reinstall the 10.5.1 update and repair permissions again.

  • Arch freezes after about 10 minutes with new kernel [SOLVED]

As the title says: Arch freezes after about 10 minutes with new kernel (2.6.27). I can only move a mouse, but everything else is frozen. Even restarting X doesn't do a trick. It doesn't work at all. Frozen.
I don't get any kind of error message (oh really?), so what's the problem..?

Yeah... I'm using nvidia... So the problem is nvidia drivers, not the Linux kernel?
Edit: My card is nVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra. I can't get driver information now, because I'm using WinXP right now. I'll check it later.
Did you make a new install or just updated?
You can try to reinstall old kernel with:
    pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel(version you want).pkg.tar.gz
if you made a new install you may have to install the xorg keyboard driver and so.
By the way, there are a few diferent packages for nvidia drivers. Check wich is yours.
Also check /var/log/ folder for errors.
    Updated kernel.
And as I said, I'll check the driver later.

  • IMac Freezes on users choice screen after a few seconds...

    Hello all,
Does anyone have a solution for this problem :
There are 3 users on my IMac 2 Ghz intel 20"...
Once the users choice screen appears, the whole computer freezes after a few seconds !
If I'm fast, i have time to choose a user, it starts to boot and freezes...
    anyone ?

Have been having this problem for a couple of weeks on numerous channels. Switch to another channel, screen goes to black. Check to make sure it is not a video source issue. No. Check another channel: it is black too but there is the channel DVR titling on the screen. So the TV is not dead -- the DVR must be not working. I would like a new DVR or please, Verizon, respond to your customers before they switch back to the other vendors!

  • Log in user (admistrator) freeze after desktop screen

all other log in users are working fine, but my administator log in freeze after desktop screen,
I used the original G5 install disk to start up the computer to run tool disk, but it can't repair the problem, I have techtool pro and it reports a problem and also says the computer it's corrupted, what should I do.

Unfortunately, no. This is one of my classroom machines, and I don't have the storage capacity to keep them all backed up.

  • One user freezes after login

One user on my computer (G5 1.6Ghz running 10.4.11) freezes after login. All the desktop items appear, as does the menu bar. But within a few seconds of this, the spinning beachball appears and everything becomes unresponsive (including force quit). If I login while holding shift everything works fine.
All the other accounts are working normally.
What should I do? I've removed everything from login items, but it still freezes.

Thanks for this. I did all this, but it still did not help. I then tried totally uninstalling little snitch, and the problem went away. After installing the newest version, everything seems to be working again.
Seems odd as I've been using little snitch (version 1.x) for years with no problems. Using 2.0.4 now and all is fine, so I'm happy.

  • My Mac freezes after waking up

I have a rMBP mid 2014 that keeps freezing after sleep, but not every time, since I upgraded to latest Yosemite 10.10.3. I can move the mouse and close all active programs, but it takes long time and will anyway not restart after that. I have to force power off and then power on again, then it will work for a while.
I have tried to do the upgrade again och even tried to reinstall Yosemite again, but it didn't help. Here's a report:

I'd be grateful for any help.

Rid the MBP of CleanMyMac.  It may very well be the source of your problems.
NO so called cleaning or performance applications should be installed in a Mac.  At best they will do nothing, at worst they can corrupt your system.
    Ciao.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Monitor freezes after grub starts

    Hi,
I'm with the following problem: when I start my computer, in a few seconds after I choose Arch Linux at the grub menu my monitor shows a lot of garbage that does not allow me to see what is going on with my computer.  So I don't even get the command line after I start my computer
It's not a problem with my monitor because I can use the arch installation CD to get to the command line.
I tried to use the second option from the grub menu, arch linux fallback, but I had the exactly same problem.
I have no clue of how I can even start trying to solve this problem. The only thing that I could think of was to use the installation CD, mount /var/ and get the messages.log file. The file can be downloaded from:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=90BUSPQP
Do you have any idea of how I can solve this problem?
    Thanks!

Sorry... it didn't come to me that downloading from megaupload would be such a hassle. Thanks George.Harmony for letting me know.
But the good thing is that the messages from my last boot does not go over the sending limits of this forum:

  • VTY shell freezes after a few seconds?

    Hi,
I'm experiencing an odd issue; I don't start the X server at boot however, after a few seconds the VTY will just freeze totally?
The system hasn't hung as I can still access over the network via SSH, and the X server when started (via SSH) works fine.
Basically after a few seconds there is no keyboard input, though at first it does work. So after logging into user account I can use it properly before it will just freeze and I will forced to login through the network using SSH.
Last night after a kernel update it seems the issue got remedied but after a reboot seems to have come back.
Kernel version is: 3.17.3-1 64 bit
The actual system is a Zotac D2550 ATOM mini-itx board
keyboard is standard USB PC keyboard
On boot there was a kernel message about something needing to be run with update, but it went too fast for me to catch and couldn't find it in my logs again. I wonder if that's the issue?
Could anyone suggest something I could try in order to be able to debug this? I can provide more information if needed, though at present I'm not sure what. I also attempted to search for the issue but most results came back with kernel freeze which isn't what I'm experiencing as it seems to be either related to usb devices or the VTY shell specifically.
    Thanks.
    [EDIT]
Actually I have just tested and keyboard is not functioning even when running the X server - though it does function at first like stated above.
Quick extra edit, did some more digging:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=185273
    seems related.
GPU is Nvidia! forgot to mention that; lspci mentions it as GT610 - currently using "nvidia" package perhaps I should be using one of the other ones?

The shell is Bash, however I am not sure if it's the shell or VTY directly?? Basically it seems that the input doesn't work any more after a few seconds.... perhaps something to do with USB layer in kernel?
Shell otherwise from SSH is fine (Bash again). Also cursor is flashing but just no input after a while.
    Unfortunately I don't see anything
    Output of dmesg just shows:

    Nothing related in journalctl.

I also have a SSD of 240 GB in the optical drive. this is my startup drive. Another HD is my workdrive. The first thing I see is that the Airport does not come back and it seems that is does not wake up. After that the whole finder freezes.
    What can be the problem?

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Freezing after 20 min of use.

I use this Macbook Pro 2011 daily with 10.8.2 and with no real changes to speak of (ie installing software) i've started experiencing freezes after about 30 min of use.
    Programs start becoming unresponsive
    Beachball appears.
    System freezes until restart.
No crash log as it doesn't actually crash just freezes.
I checked the log and saw that a geek tool couldn't find a file so i shut that down and restarted in case it was the cause. It happened again though and i copied this as the last few messages before i had to restart.
if anyone can shed light on what's suddenly causing this it would be greatly appreciated.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Kernel panics after upgrading to OS 10.8.5

I installed the 10.8.5 update on my early 20098 model Mac Pro.  I thought it strange that I had to restart the computer twice after the update.  But everything initially seemed to work fine after the update.  But while I was updating the OS on my Macbook Pro, leaving my Mac Pro unattended for about 45 minutes, I came back to the Mac Pro and discovered that there was a kernal panic warning on the screen to the effect that the computer shut down because of a problem.  I was given the option to restart the computer and it seemed to work normally for the next few hours.  But when I checked on it the next morning, the same kernel panic message was displayed.  I tried starting up in Safe Mode.  As far as I can tell everything works well in safe mode, at least for the 3 or 4 hours I left it in that mode.  Back in standard boot the kernel alerts started back again.  This happens so far only when I am not actively using the computer but when it is left unattended.  The computer is set to sleep after 1 hour.
An internet search suggested that there might be a conflict with a .kext file.  There are only 5 .kext files loaded at startup that are non-Apple ones.  I removed three of them since they were not critical for the use of my computer.  But two of the .kext files are necessary for the proper function of the Mac Pro as it is configured.  There is an "Accelsior.kext" file that is required for my OWC Mercury Accelsior PCI Express SSD card and two .kext files necessary for my CalDigit USB 3.0 Host Adapter (CalDigitFastIO.kext and CalDigitUSBxHCI.kext).  Removing all but the CalDigit .kext files and the Accelsior file did not correct the problem.  Next I simply re-installed the 10.8.5 updater.  This did not correct the problem.  I think I will go ahead and remove the CalDigit .kext files as a trial since I can operate the computer without USB 3.0 for a while.  But beyond this I don't know what I should do next.
Here is a copy of the kernel report in Console that was generated with the last kernel panic:

Thanks for any input or help.  Unless there is a simple fix I think I will have to revert back to my pre-update backup copy of 10.8.4
    John

    Glenn,
Since you do not have the CalDigit USB 3 card installed and we have the exact same inducible kernel panics after update to 10.8.5, I think we can rule out a role for the CalDigit card in this matter.  Apparently, according to Larry at OWC, he and other users are not experiencing problems with the Accelsior card after the update. This suggests it is not a universal problem but it affects only Mac Pros running certain software or hardware add-ons.  It would be interesting to know in what other regards your system resembles mine in some unique fashion that might explain this problem.
You have the MacPro 5,1 while I have the MacPro 4,1 so we know that it is not isolated to just one model of the Mac Pro.  I have 20GB RAM installed with a module in each of the slots.  I have SuperDrives installed in both bays.  I have all 4 internal HD bays occupied.  The Rember app indicates that there are no problems with my RAM. I have multiple external FW HDs, a Zoom USB modem, and 2 monitors attached to the Mac.  It is hard to imagine any of these features as being related to the problem at hand.  I might try removing all attached devices to see if this makes a difference.  Meanwhile I'll await a follow up report from OWC.

  • I install Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro and freezing after waking up and is impossible restart

I install mountain lion on my macbook pro late 2009 and freezing after waking up and is impossible restart

Restart your mac in Safe Mode by holding down the 'shift' key while it powers up. You'll know if you've entered Safe Mode correctly if you see a progress bar underneath the grey Apple logo screen. Let go of the shift key when you see that, wait for the progess bar to complete then log in.
    After log in, go to
 > System Preferences... Users & Groups and remove everything from the 'Login Items' tab.
If you have any anti-virus software installed (Sophos, F-Secure, VirusBarrier, Mackeeper) uninstall it while in Safe Mode.
Restart your mac normally and test.
    Any improvement?

  • Kernel Panics after Waking from Sleep

Hey everyone, having some problems with my iMac I'm hoping you could help with:
    I'm running a 2o" G5 iMac 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM, with OS X 1o.4.7.
What is happening is that if I put my iMac to sleep, and then wake it after a few hours, I get Kernel Panics and have to restart 1-3 times(this has been going on for about a month). I'm also having programs unexpectedly close on me after being able to restart it(mainly Mail & iTunes). This doesn't happen if I only leave my iMac asleep for a 1-2 hours or so.
So I get 3 types of errors, the kernel panic with the different languages after waking the iMac. The kernel panic that displays white text on black bars running down the left side of my screen, after being able to reboot(randomly). And unexpected program shut downs, primarily when using Mail or iTunes.
    What I've done:
    -Reset the PRAM
-Removed all external hardware except mouse/keyboard.
-Ran the hardware disc check which determined I had a bad stick of RAM, so I removed it, and left the stick provided by Apple in.
-Deleted the plists Powermanagement & autoawake, deleted the cache files(per Apple support).
    -Safe boot(still got the panics)
-Erase & Install after backing everything up.
When I re-tested using the clean boot for about a day, I didn't get the errors. However, when I reloaded my initial setup from by backup disk, I started getting the kernel panics after a few hours of sleep again.
I think the fact that I didn't get the panics running the clean boot has hopefully ruled out a hardware problem, so am I looking at some software that could be the culprit? Is there any easy way to narrow down what it might be, or if it's another issue altogether?
Thanks for any help provided, and let me know if I need to provide any further info!
    20" iMac G5/15" PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks for all the helpful ideas everyone(Miriam especially).
I tried logging in as another (new) user, and experienced the same problems. Nothing showing on the activity monitor that I can see as the problem either.
Looks like I'll be heading back down to the Apple store to see what can be done. I had taken it down before, but it was after I had done a clean install, and they couldn't recreate it after 1 hour of sleep, and I didn't want to pay $75 to keep it over night. But I have my crash logs now, and hopefully they'll be a little more receptive the second time around.
    Thanks again!
