Kernel make problem
Hi and greetings to the Arch Community!
First of all, i have to explain myself.I switched from Gentoo, as it was great, but the compiling times convinced me of Arch!
The installation was a piece of cake, the installation took little time.Because the kernel loads the maximum amount of modules with ramdisk, i wanted to build my own customized Kernle. So after the first boot, i did pacman -Syu.It installed the newest kernle under /usr/src/kernel-2.6.17-arch.After i was finished with "make menuconfig".I did "make", but it was interrupted by the message "No rules to make".What the heck is going on.....
As i was trying a downloaded kernle sources, everthing ran flawlessly?!
As i came from Gentoo, perhaps i have a different and false thinking?
kernel package doesn'T contain full sources, btw i would really recommend to use the stock kernel + initcpio that solves the loading of many modules and you don't need to compile the kernel yourself.
for more information check the news and wiki about initcpio.

What is involved in fixing the kernel task problem and what are the consequences
Ah yes. The kernel task problem. My Macbook pro encounters it at least once every day. It peaks at around 600% CPU usage when I have MainStage or Logic open. A main stage patch that normally uses 40-45% of CPU is redlining at 100% cpu usage- resulting in awful clicks and pops. Did i mention this happened during a live show yesterday? Because it did. I can open the CPU monitor and look at whats going on. It's always the same deal. Kernel task runs it's course and then goes back to normal.
I've seen various posts on fixing the problem. I believe I understand how to fix it more or less (ish). I just want to make sure I can go about it in such a way that doesn't mess with anything else on my computer.
My computer: macbook pro 8.2 15' w/ crucial m500 ssd in main & optical bays. 8gb of ram. latest version of mavericks. Standard stuff.ssd in main & optical bays
Your unsupported hardware configuration is likely contributing to the problem, if not entirely causing it. -
Kernel Label problem for SOL MAN 4.0
Hi
When was installing a Unicode SolMan 4.0 on Win 2003 SQL server 2005.
I have downloaded a following CD for Kernel -
51031778_11 NW 2004s SR1 UC-Kernel 7.00 Windows Server on IA32 32bit
When I give the LABEL.ASC for kernel, it does not accept it and give me following error -
You entered: E:/nw04s/kernel/DVD_NW_2004s_SR1_Kernel_Windows__LNX_X86/LABEL.ASC
Found the label SAP:AKK:700:DVD_KERNEL:SAP Kernel 700:D51031778 but need label
SAP:AKK:700:KERNEL:.WINDOWS_I386:
I tried all these option from the below link, but it did not work
Kernel Label problem...
Does any one have solution for that?
I appreciate your help

kamalHi udo lang,
I have downloaded the Kernel file 51031778_3 NW 2004s SR1 Kernel 7.00 Windows Server on IA32 32bit today. I will try to fix the problem by using this kernel.
I also got reply from Sap that solution for this issue is:
This is most unusual. Due to the currently running RampUp the
DVD's could have been updated.
I suggest that you try the following,
Download both the Unicode and NonUnicode Kernel files from the
SAP Service Market Place.
The Kernel DVD 51031778 contains the Kernel for Unicode and for Non-
Unicode, as you wrote, in directory "", label:
"SAP:AKK:700:KERNEL::WINDOWS_X86_64:"
Please check if you start Unicode Installation. Due to an incorrect
procedure sapinst requireds both Kernel-CD.
With the next release will be it correct. If you start a Unicode
installation it will be a unicode.
51031792_5 NW 2004s SR1 UC-Kernel 7.00 AIX 64bit
51031792_1 NW 2004s SR1 Kernel 7.00 AIX 64bit
Etract them to one directory, like:
<downloadDIR>/
kernel/
KN_WINDOWS_I386/
KU_WINDOWS_I386/
CDLABEL.ASC
LABEL.ASC
LABELIDX.ASC
When you ware asked for the kernel DVD, please enter
<downloadDIR>/kernel
SAPinst should take the right kernel version for the installation
automatically.
You may additionally refer to the below note for reference.
921593 Inst. SAP NetWeaver 2004s SR1 on UNIX
If the problem is resolved i will let you know. Thanks for your assistance

HT1212 up date makes problems really
I did up dated today my i phone 4s ..after i put my pass code but doesn't work and i can't use this phone now ..how to fix for my pass code or open my phone screen ..up date makes problems really
Apple is already working to release 10.10.1.
Of course we users want it to be released ASAP if not sooner.
The process goes as follows (over simplified):
- identify the problems (uses need to report them to Apple)
- reproduce the problem (for example i don't have problems with iTunes but you do, perhaps my library only has 1,000 songs while yours has 50,000 and that makes a difference)
- Prioritize the bug list
- Fix the bugs
- Test, test, test
I expect 10.10.1 to be released around November, but no one here knows
Maverick reached version 19.9.5 in around 12 months, that's an average of 1 release every 2 months -
this website make problem for me, he open by it self everytime i try to open another websites
Please i need some help

Solving Kernel/Xorg problems
Hi all,
I've been using linux for several years now, and I like it a lot, but it's still not clear in my mind what to do when I run into kernel or Xorg problems.
When I run into a problem with a userland application, it's usually quite simple to identify the culprit or at least the apparent culprit, find the relevant bugzilla, file a bug and try to help the people in charge to fix the problem.
In contrast, the world of low-level stuff is a lot more intimidating. For example, I have had several display and supsend/hibernate problems with my laptop for more than one year now, but I still have no idea what to do about them. What can/ should I do about kernel/Xorg problems?I didn't want this thread to be about my specific problems, but here goes:
- Suspend fails about half of the time, the screen blanks (with a cursor blinking) and the computer just hangs. It is completely dead (REISUB doesn't work)
- Hibernate doesn't work, when I turn the computer on, it checks the filesystems and boots normally
- About 10% of the time, the login manager (currently kdm, but I had the same problem with gdm) shows with a very low resolution. Restarting xorg usually fixes the problem.
I probably have a few more that I'm forgetting at the moment. -
Does compiling the kernel makes the system run significantly faster?
It used to be when you compiled your kernel (at least ten years ago), you would get a significant speed boost. However, with the speed of machine nowadays, I wonder how much, if any. Does compiling the kernel have a significant increase in daily performance or otherwise? If so, what portion of the system does it makes faster than before? In short, Is it worth it? I appreciate any comments.

The title of this thread doesn't limit responses to just redoing the kernel since it says "system run significantly faster".
The kernel is not the system...the system runs from HDD and ram.
To speed up that process, run everything possible in ram for system speed up.
I think for 500 packages loading from scratch to desktop in 45 seconds is fast. And running after that in ram is super fast system speed "significantly faster".
The speed I quote is possible now. With UDMA capability in the kernel, at least half of the install time is probable.
And that is for over 500 packages into KDE no less!
Using flash in IDE removes the latent search from the system and therefore must be faster.
Changing the kernel will indeed speed up the system...but only if it includes UDMA for the flash drives already available but not configured with the present kernels.
Using flash drives for ide cache repos will allow faster boot time, and reduce the load on the system. You don't normally run many, many programs at once so put them in cache with a script to permit fast loading .
That is "system running significantly faster" and all in ram, the fastest in the computer.
no
Does compiling the kernel makes the system run significantly faster?
compiling kernel, not whatever
I did not suspect that this requires explanation?
but if you really want the noise, let's leave "faster?"
and answer is: yes/no
whatever that means.
or you are joking
anyway seems that results may vary.

Hi! I have a kernel panic problem on my macbook pro! Please help me!!!
Hi! At the Apple store they changed my harddisk twice, but they didn't solve my problem.. Every time I try to install applications or to update the software, the kernel panic message appears (you need to restart your computer..etc) and I don't know what to do! I have already sent the signal to apple and verified permissions and when I did the hardware test, it appeared that i have a 4MEM/1/40000000:0xa9facf98 error...
this is the problem when I restart my computer:

KERNEL upgrade problem.
Dear Experts,
Very imp issue. please find time to read and gothrough this.
recently i had updated KERNEL for ECC 6.0 SR2.
after updaing the kerenl files, i'm not able to see the updated patch level
in system status.
Same old patch level is displayed.
1 *what could be the problem?
D:\usr\sap\DEV\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64
this is the path, first i had pasted (copy new and paste in tht kerenl Dir).
it had asked for u want to replace (while pasting) i clicked Yes to all.
so, it got replaced with new extracted files.
and when i started the MMC SAP is not starting UP.
then when i had serached in USR dir, i found another Dir with kerenl fiels for
01 instance (java instance defaultly loaded in ECC 6.0 SR2).
so, i had replaced kerenl files , simply by pasting in to this second path.
D:\usr\sap\DEV\SCS01\exe
then i had started SAP MMC, after a few min it was started and i'm able to log in
to SAP.
But, the problem is I'm not able to see the Upgraded value in System status.
What could be the problem ?
2 *where to check ?
I request you people to give your valuable inputs for
3 *procedure to be follwed in upgrading SAP KERNEL?
4 *what kind of fiels to be downloaded from market place?
i.e Kernel part 1 , kerenl part 2 and other kerenl components in both places
where you can download those kerenl parts.
5 *if any problem occurs in kerenl upgrading how to revert back ?
6 *what kind of precautions to be taken before updating Kerenl ?
7 *system restart is mandatory or not ?
if any extra points to be discussed please let me know that.
Thanking you all in anticipation.
Best regards,
by
Raghav.Hi,
did you stop and restart the system for changing the kernel ?
You can find latest kernel from http://service.sap.com/swdc
Choose your platform and product combination. More detailed info can be found in OSS note: 19466
http://service.sap.com/~form/handler?_APP=01100107900000000342&_EVENT=REDIR&_NNUM=0000019466&nlang=E
and you need to stop SAP before you can change the kernel and after kernel upgrade you restart the system.
For a backup purpose, before changing the kernel. please make a copy of your old kernel directory...
Cheers !!
Satya.

1g lowmem?
Many machines now have exactly 1Gb ram and the standard memory split on i386 does not allow you to use more than 896Mb ram without enabling high memory for at least 4Gb. The problem is that this incurs an overhead whereas we can simply change this split with this patch to allow i386 architectures to use up to 1Gb ram without enabling highmem. This is configurable if HIGHMEM is disabled.
I also don't know if his old patches have the patch or if the current will work on the 2.4 kernel..
Just looked around and found the 2.4 are now Ick patchset and i don't see that... CK does have a server patch... If anything just get the 2.6 CK server patchset... 2.6 is stable, but how am I to say I've only used 2.6... Go with 2.6 ck server.
websites: CK patchset 2.6
ICK 2.4 patchset
i really want a huge kernel space, and i can't find the 4G kernel space vm patch for 2.4 at these links
thanks anyway -
Hi
I'm using a 13 inch mid-2012 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.9.2
For some weeks the computer has been crashing at random points, usually with the screen getting glitchy and freezing. The only alternative is to power off and then power on. Normally it won't power until several attempts, as it makes a 3-beep alarm sound.
I took it to the Genius Bar, and they reinstalled everything but said they couldn't find any problems.
I don't always get an error report, but here's the latest one. Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

If you're still under warranty, I would take the machine back to the Apple Store, along with a copy of your kernel panic log, and have them test the RAM (you can actually test the RAM yourself, using an app such as Rember).
But it certainly look as if it's a problem with your RAM. Since you've stock RAM, and since you can add your own RAM if you're out of warranty and Apple wants a fortune for RAM, if you do have bad RAM you can get new RAM from reputable dealers at a good price.
Good luck,

Hi again.
I've tried last night to compile the "stock" kernel-2.6.18-ARCH provided with the distro (and updated to the latest package) so I can customize it the way I like it. But I've run into a compilation problem after menuconfig. When I run make i get this error:
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/src/linux-2.6.18-ARCH/init/Makefile'. Stop.
make: *** [init] Error 2
I don't know what's to be done. Maybe I've done something wrong or maybe I didn't do something that I should have done. ;-) Anyways.. I downloaded the vanilla 2.6.18.3 and compiled it. It works ok that way, too. But if this is a bug I just wanted to report it.I knew it should be my mistake. Thanks for clearing this out.
Is your version of kernel a lot different than the vanilla kernel?
Or is it ok to stick with the vanilla version without breaking anything?
(except the video module for nvidia, which I'm building myself) -
Having kernel panic problems for the last 1.5 years
Hi all Mac experts here,
Having been a PC users for over 10 years, last year I decided to make the switch and bought an iMac in Jan. Since day 1 I have been having problems with it. It kept coming up with kernel panics. At first I asked the store that I bought it from and they said it could be RAM problem. So they gave me some factory original RAM to try. The problem persisted and it came to a point when I could not start the OS at all. I reinstalled the OS and it was ok for a while (Though installing took 3 attempts as it would kernel panic half way through). After the reinstall, thing worked fine for a hile (although it would still kernel panic once in a while) I used it for another half a year, the same thing happened. I did the same thing, reinstalled and it was ok again. Recently the same thing is happening again. Quite frustrated as I never did have the same problem with Windows.
I wonder if experts here can tell me what I should do to resolve this. I am attaching the kernel panic log here:

I would appreciate if someone could shed some lights here. Just wanted to make this go away once and for all.
Thank you very much in advance!
Kin29Hi Carolyn,
Thank you so much for your quick response. I really should have tried this forum a year ago, then I might have been able to resolve this before my warranty ran out. I bought iMac back in 2008 Jan and I did not purchase Apple Care. I know it was rather unwise on my part but I guess that's typical of ex-PC users. They all think that they know everything and never think they'd need Apple Care because they never did when they had their PCs... I was obviously wrong. For any Mac newbies out there, get your Apple Care before your warranty runs it. It's totally worth it and you never know when you are going to need it.
Anyway, back to the issue. I thought I know so much when this first happened to me so I already went through all the resolve kernel panics articles already, and followed the suggestions to try to fix the problem myself. None really helped, apart from reinstalling (even that took a few attempts to finish as I was still getting kernel panic half way through installation from the original DVDs that came with the iMac), which only worked for a few months before i had to redo it again.
I do not have any other peripherals connected apart from the kb and mouse (apple wireless)
I do not have an anti-virus program.
I do not have a Windows partition. That was the first thing I removed when this first happened last year. I thought it was the windows causing the issue. I repartitioned the HDD when I first reinstalled. I used all 500GB in a single partition.
I have quite a few 3rd party software, but I would have thought that they would not be the root cause of the kernel panics. I experience kernel panics even during OS installation.
Here is one of the recent crash reports I found in CrashReporter. It is so long so I am gonna thank you here for looking into this! Thanks!

Bootsplash : Applying splash on a patched kernel makes a Kernel Panic
Hi Archers,
I tried to put a bootsplash and for that I first pached the kernel with the PKGBUILD from ABS using this HOW-TO :
http://archlinux.veloxis.de/howtos/boot … to_us.html
The patched kernel works very well.
Then I wanted to add a splash using the splash utility, following this HOW-TO :
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bootsplash
Then I edited the grub and rebooted.
All I can see is a kernel panic, telling me this :
RAMDISK : Couldn't find valid RAM disk image starting at 0
List of all partitions :
No file system could mount root, tried :
Kernel Panic - VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)
This is quite weird since some lines above I can see that the RAMDISK has been initialized :
RAMDISK driver initialized: 16 RAM disks of 16384K size 1024 blocksize
Does anynone have an idea of what could be the cause of the problem ?
Thanks
++++++++++++I think I've found what is the cause of the problem but this is quite weird.
To activate bootsplash, the bootsplash option have to be activated in the kernel configuration file (config) :
CONFIG_FBCON_SPLASHSCREEN=y
So I added this option at the end of the config file. The other required options were already activated by default.
After having installed the new kernel thanks to the pacman -U command, I can see in the config file, which has been automatically generated during the compilation (/boot/kconfig26), that the bootsplash option is no more activated ! The entire line has been erased.
How can an option be erased during the compilation ? Where could I find what caused this problem ? Here is my PKGBUILD, which I think is correct : (I have deactivated the Arch logo)
