[Kernel] May linux-ck kernel eventually come to "core"?

Hello,
This is not a rethorical question nor a flame war thread. This is a true question now that I've bought a new laptop.
I found (no fan sensors...) that running even "World of Goo" (not too many CPU intensive), the temperature went from 51ºC up to 84ºC easily (in less than 1 minute) with 85ºC tagged as "high" and 100ºC as critical.
I thought it was the working temperature (a bit high, I now) but I thought as I found the linux-ck repo that I might give it a try.
So, I installed "ck-corex" (which matches my Core i7 kernel) and found that even running CPU intensive applications, my core temperature was 64ºC.. Which is 20ºC less than stock kernel!!
Then, that's my question: do you think a more optimized linux kernel should be on "core" so newbies may use it as default? Or, at least, give it more publicity so it may lower hardware risks?
Thanks in advance,

Oh, OK. Thank you very much for the information but I think a newbie would never click on a page called "patches and patchsets". That title is so intimidating...
Also, unless you "know" that there are other kernels you would never look for them. Then, you're no more a newbie and, probably, you would ended frying your processor... (+20ºC and in winter... I don't want to think about it in summer...)
I know the process is quite complex for a newbie too:
* install base
* install lm_sensors
* The issue: check temperatures before & after running a program
* The idea: install an "optimized kernel" (you're no longer a newbie) just looking for better responsiveness
* The issue arises: why not to check temperatures before & after running a program with the alternate kernel... and realise it's 20ºC cooler
So, unless you stop being a newbie, you may end up frying your processor because, in my opinion, the information is not shown to you sooner.
Maybe, adding a subsection in the "5 Extra" section of "Beginners' Guide", just like the "Sound" one, but refering to kernels, would be good, IMHO.
The only needed things would be informing to install lm_sensors to check temperature, because AUR was lectured before in section 4.

  • Com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi confict on startup

I just got my Mac Mini back from the Genius Bar after a logic board replacement and used Carbon Copy Cloner to put the contents of the hard drive back onto the disc. On startup I get scrolling black text informing me that there is a conflict between com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi and to choose one. How do I fix this? The Apple store is 90 min away so I'd like to keep that as a last resort.

It was a conflict with Parallels

  • Java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: COM.cloudscape.core.JDBCDriver

    O/S: Windows XP Pro
    Software: j2sdk1.4.1_01, j2sdkee1.4
    1/ First Problem:
when I read the book, it's said that I need to add the J2EE JAR files to the CLASSPATH variable:
    %J2EE_HOME%\lib\j2ee.jar;%J2EE_HOME%\lib\locale
(the locale JAT file is not under the lib directory. Where is it located at?)
    2/ Second Problem:
I have a Java program called CreateAgency.java and a batch file called CreateAgency.bat. The batch looks like
    @echo off
    call %J2EE_HOME%\bin\setenv
    @echo on
    java -classpath .;%CPATH% CreateAgency
When I run the batch file to create a cloudscape database, I encounter 2 errors:
    * call %J2EE_HOME%\bin\setenv is not recognized as an internal or external command
    * java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: COM.cloudscape.core.JDBCDriver
What's the setenv file? Where is it stored?
    Where is JDBCDriver loated at?
In general, how can I fix these problems?

    I Figured it out!!!
    my solution to problem 1
I have left out the ;%J2EE_HOME%\lib\locale in my classpath. I also do not have this folder, and I don't know what it is supposed to do. I don't think it will cause a problem if you leave it out.
    my solution for problem 2.
I was able to get the CreateAgency Program to run.
If you want to get the create agency application to run then all you have to do is append the location of cloudscape.jar to the classpath.
On my system I have cloudscape.jar file located in
    %J2EE_HOME%\lib\system\cloudscape.jar
Append this line to the classpath. Then compile and run CreateAgency.java. It should work fine then.
Setenv is a bat file that should be stored in %J2EE_HOME%\bin\setenv. I do not have the setenv.bat file, so I get the same error.

    Hi,
For AutoVue/Enovia issues it is best to log a new service request to the Enovia support team first and if needed the Enovia support team will contact the AutoVue support team. A few things which are going to be needed when creating a new SR:
    1. Need to clarify if this is a new issue (Development related) or if this is from a released version of the integration.
    2. If this is from a released version of the integration need to know if this issue just started happening? What has changed for this issue to start happening?
    3. Need to know the AutoVue ISDK version used to build the integration.
    4. Need to know the AutoVue version.
    5. Need full logs (AutoVue and Enovia integration) set to debug.
I think you should also check the value set for the LOCALE parameter in the applet definition. The log seems to indicate that the current value would be "debug". If this is the case please make sure to use one of the supported locale values as stated on page 59 of the AutoVue Admin Guide (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37436_01/otn/pdf/E37319_01.pdf):

  • Topics comes under CORE Java

    Hi ,
What are the topics comes under CORE Java ?

Core can be loosely defined as part of the Java Standard Edition platform.
The language and the libraries. There are certain technologies that are
not part of the core SE platform and they are separately downloadable.
One example is JNDI. It used to be an optional package until integrated
into SE Core in JDK 1.3.

    Greetings
I started to get Kernel Panics (2 today). I pasted in the last one.
The last one happened while Time Machine was running and Spotlight did indexing.
I cannot say for sure that this was the case when the first kernel panic was thrown but I presume it was.
CPU was pretty busy both times and the fans running full speed.
Anyone any thoughts on what's going on here?
    Thanks & Regards,

com.sophos.kext.sav - do you use some AV scanner?
if it is set up to block access to infected files and you have some of them somewhere in downloads or mail attachments - it can try to block spotlight and/or time machine access - thus probably causing deadlock in storage subsystem.
Do you know that for now the only malware for Mac is cured by mac os itself? (there was appropriate update)
all known to me Mac antivirus software scans for Windows viruses, which are of no harm to you.
Anyway, boot from DVD and repair HD
otherwise may be one of your's mounted media is dying - try to see smart status for it, espesially bad blocks remapped
trying to read from scratched DVD wery rarely can cause KP also

  • Kernel panics: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBAttachedSCSI

I've been experiencing a number of kernel panics lately, about once per day (it always seems to happen while I'm at work). The problem report seems to indicate that the com.apple.iokit.IOUSBAttachedSCSI kernel extension is the culprit, leading me to believe that my backup disk is the issue here. All four USB ports on the rear of my iMac are exhausted with the following peripherals.
    - LaCie 2big 4TB external drive, connected via USB 3, configured with RAID 1 and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) file system, passes the disk utility check
    - Audioengine D1 external DAC
    - Apple Superdrive
    - The last USB port is connected to an APC UPS
I did a bit of googling on this problem and found several people recommending booting in safe mode, removing certain peripherals, uninstalling software for peripherals, etc. Safe mode is not really feasible since this only seems to happen once per day. All of these peripherals are essential to my workflow and none have required the installation of third-party software. I quite frankly find it inexcusable that a USB peripheral would be causing daily kernel panics. Has anyone else experienced these problems and have a potential fix? I should also note that all of these peripherals had been working with my iMac for many months without issue before these kernel panics started. Here's the the system configuration information that is generated in the report sent to Apple:

I suggest you start by removing the LaCie software, which is not needed to use the drive. You have no other software capable of causing panics. Test.
If there's no improvement, remove the two aftermarket memory modules that you installed and test again.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • MacBook Kernel Panic com.apple.driver.AirPort Atheros5424(120.31.1)

    Hi Everyone!
Over the last couple of days my MacBook performs a kernel panic and forces me to restart. I have to restart a couple of times before it works properly again, but sometimes the screen stays black when I turn it on, and it just sits there until I restart it again using the power button.
I've taken dump of the error message in panic.log and it appears that it is the AirPort card causing problems. Can someone confirm this, and suggest what I need to do to resolve this issue as it is becoming quite annoying now. I bought my MacBook back in October last year, so it should still be under warranty.
Heres the relevent content of the panic.log:

    Hey boys and girls...
Well, after reading a few of the posts, I can say this:
    1. I have the N activated from the factory- This is a week old macbook. (Utilities/Network Utility, choose en1 from the dropdown - if you see (802.11 a/b/g/n), you have n installed)
    2. The ONLY airport driver loaded into the kernel is atheros, meaning it MUST be the active driver. See kextstat -l | grep -i airport
    3. I have been monkeying with replacing extensions from previous versions. So far, I have not had a wifi dropout or kernel panic... BUT IT'S EARLY IN MY TESTING.
Here's how I replaced the extension. This is taken directly from a macfixit tutorial. NOTE: 10.4.9 still produced a wifi lockup. I have now used the airport kext (I chose all I found) in 10.4.8 and SO FAR (only tonight) I have not had a dropout. IT COULD STILL HAPPEN THOUGH, SO YMMV:
Reverting to older AirPort kernel extensions [Useful for: slow wireless throughput, router not recognized]
f you are experiencing dire AirPort connectivity issues after a major system update (incremental Mac OS X update or Security Update), and have exhausted all other workarounds, you can try reverting to older version of the AirPort kernel extension via the following steps: [WARNING: This workaround is risky because you should not generally mix and match kernel extensions after updates. You will also lose any AirPort-related refinements brought about by the most recent update and new conflicts can ensue. Still, in a bind, it can restore wireless connectivity where other workarounds fail.]
    1. Download the Mac OS X combo updater directly precedent to your current system version if you applied an incremental Mac OS X update (e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.9), or your current system version if you applied a security update from Apple's download page.
    2. Download and install the shareware application Pacifist
    3. Drag the Mac OS X combo installer package (e.g. MacOSXUpd10.4.9Intel.pkg) onto the Pacifist application icon.
    4. Click the triangle next to System to expand it
    5. Click the triangle next to Library to expand it
    6. Click the triangle next to Extensions to expand it
    7. Scroll down and find the file AppleAirPort.kext. Drag it to your Desktop or another location (you will have to enter your administrator password)
    8. On your Mac OS X startup drive, navigate to /System/Library/Extensions and locate a similarly named file (AppleAirPort.kext). Move it to another location for safe keeping.
    9. Now drag the file from step 7 (the one that you retrieved from the Mac OS X combo install package) into the /System/Library/Extensions directory on your startup, in effect replacing the newer file (installed by the AirPort updater) with and older copy -- you will have to enter an administrator password.
    10. Restart your Mac

  • Kernel panic: com.apple.ATIRadeonX1000

My father's iMac has been panicking once every few days for the last month or so.
I don't know what he was doing at the time and he doesn't remember. I'm just visiting for Christmas and trying to learn what I can post-mortem.
I don't see any non-Apple kexts, which would have been my first guess.
Here's the latest panic file... Any ideas?

  • VT6122 Gigabit Ethernet driver for Kernel 2.6 (Fedora Core 2)

    Hi,
I'm looking for the VT6122 Gigabit Ethernet driver. The manufacture doesn't provide it. And at MSI there is only a version for kernel 2.4 available! Can anybody tell me were I can find this driver?
    Txs!!!

    got it.
it was the tune2fs problem that is in the knowledge base.

  • Kernel panics: what does "Core FIR register check failed" mean?

I have an XServe dual G5 2.0 running Server 10.3.9 unlimited client version that began experiencing frequent kernel panics when I let it install the two most recent security updates. Before I installed those updates, the machine had been up without problems for 220 days.
It is not heavily loaded; it runs a Bugzilla via Apache2, shares some files out via SMB and AFS, and runs a jabber server with less than 20 users.
It generates entries in /Library/Logs/panic.log, but I can't make any sense out of them because they only have numeric entries in the stack traces and a bunch of register values.
I've tried a whole bunch of smallish suggestions on fixing problems with this, including repairing permissions on the disks, repairing the boot volume with Disk Utility, resetting all the NVRAM values, and resetting the PMU. Today I installed Xserve Remote Diagnostics and ran the normal, extended, and memory tests.
The memory test completes without errors. The normal and extended both get errors on the FIR. I've attached the log text from XServe Remote Diagnostics.
Is or could this FIR problem be what's causing my xserve to kernel panic? Anyone have an idea what I can do about this?
    Thanks,
    Frank

I see that "Panic(CPU 1): Unresponsive processor" and that makes me "feel" like it may be a hardware error.  It could be ram related.  Maybe not.

Any ideas on what caused this, and what I can do to fix it?
I had nothing connected to the MBP at all. No FW, USB, etc. I was on battery power at the time.
    Thanks!
    William

Is this a computer to which things have been 'migrated" from an earlier model, William? If so, what model and what OS was the older one running.
Bluetooth certainly seems to figure significantly in the 'backtrace". Were you using a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard or other similar device at the time? Was Bluetooth turned on?
    Cheers
    Rod

  • General query: what are the criteria for kernels to move to core repo?

Is there a check list that our devs follow which helps decide when a new kernel version is moved from the testing repo to the core repo? I have seen version 3.11 in the testing repo for a while now. Thank you!

Dunno about a formal list but if you read along in arch-dev-public it seems as though making sure all module packages (virtualbox, nvidia, etc.) are working is a key item.
EDIT: It would be interesting to see how long each new release stayed in [testing].  Does anyone know of a web-exposed log that shows movement of packages out of [testing]?  Below are the dates when a new major version was built and presumably published to [testing]:
    3.10-1 on 2013-07-10
    3.9-1 on 2013-04-29
    3.8-1 on 2013-02-20
    3.7-1 on 2012-12-11
    3.6-1 on 2012-10-02
    3.5-1 on 2012-07-22

  • IOS issues that may cause me to eventually switch...

I am frustrated by lack of configurability. for things like Maps problems, I'm ok. I know you'll fix it eventually. but I DON'T want to use gamecenter. why can't I turn it off?? also, the standard weather app *****, I don't want a VIP mail folder, and newsstand is useless. if I am going to continue buying apple products, I need to be able to disable these sorts of things from MY phone. thank you.

    Thank you!
May be cause is Hynix memory.
    I installed two modules by 4 Gb each (Hynix 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600S-9-10-F2).
Now, I want to change it to Crucial memory.

  • KDE 4.3 vs KDEmod 4.3 (What is modularization)

Hi, Ok first a newbie question. Have I understood correctly when I say that KDEmod is essentially a "modularized" version of KDE? If so what does "modularization" mean exactly? Does it mean that instead of installing everything KDE has to offer I can
