Kernel nitro3 and menuconfig
Hi, im having the stranges occurrences.
I tried 2 use this PKGBUILD of nitro in here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … ight=nitro, but changed the nitrover = 3.
it downloaded fine, and it goes to the choice menu :
==> How do you want to configure the kernel:
==> ----------------------------------------
==> (for ArchLinux defaults, use 'not_at_all (1)')
==>
1) not_at_all
2) menuconfig
3) xconfig
4) oldconfig
5) config
when i choose '2', it goes into menuconfig ok, but once i get there, the only keys i can use is enter and esc. when i press the arrow keys to try to move, it already ask you if you want to save the config. I find this very strange since I compiled nitro2 thru menuconfig the last time and it operated normally.
Since menuconfig is out of wack, i tried xconfig, and it operated normally. But strange thing is that after it starts compiling, in the middle of the compliation, i get this error :
if [ -r System.map ]; then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map -b /var/abs/local/kernel26/pkg -r 2.6.9-nitro3-ARCH; fi
WARNING: /var/abs/local/kernel26/pkg/lib/modules/2.6.9-nitro3-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/vesafb-tng.ko needs unknown symbol vesafb_setup
./PKGBUILD: line 133: cd: /var/abs/local/kernel26/pkg/lib/modules/2.6.9-nitro3: No such file or directory
==> ERROR: Build Failed. Aborting...
which I am stoked as what it means.
thanks
dammit
I would just download the sources and patch the kernel the old fashioned way...Im running it right now and havent had any probs...although I dont use the framebuffer for anything....I know it is a bit goofy sometimes when you use the Vesa-tng ...its still kinda new

[SOLVED]How to patch the kernel? And other questions
Like the same user who started this thread I'm suffering from hibernation resuming troubles using kernel 2.6.38. In that thread was posted a soluttion that involves patching the kernel.
The patch to apply is this:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/g … e3e9fc8684
Waiting for the bug to be corrected and a new version supplied is not an option, because this laptop is my main computer and I heavly rely on hibernation.
Here's my trouble now. I don't know if it is possible to patch without recompiling the whole kernel, or it has to be compiled with that patch applied. I have seen the archlinux's wiki guide about compiling the kernel, but found nothing about applying patches (maybe I didn't searched with enought depth).
In case there is needed a full compilation, should I use the vanilla kernel, the Arch Linux one or any of the AUR ones (I said AUR because they're the first that came to my mind)? Should i expect a performance gain with this (apart from fixing the hibernation bug)?
Maybe i'm just doing a bunch of dumb questions, and the only thing I need is to search deeply on the wiki. In that case, please tell me. If not, I rather get some answers around kernel patching and / or compiling questions.
Edit: In addittion, it is possible that all this questions are just newbie ones, I don't know, but as I am willing to learn from this I will appreciate any info or documentation about it.
Thank you.
Last edited by ethail (2011-04-12 06:30:48)From the source tree (/usr/src/linux-whatever) execute
patch -p1 < /path/to/fix.patch
then recompile kernel from the source tree.
Basically that consists of executing the following commands from the source tree:
make menuconfig
make
make modules_install
cp -v System.map /boot/System.map-CUSTOM
cp -v arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-CUSTOM
mkinitcpio -k 2.6.38-CUSTOM -g /boot/kernel-CUSTOM.img
and you need to add menu entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst
-k 2.6.38-CUSTOM should corespond to /lib/modules/2.6.38-CUSTOM (replace 2.6.38-CUSTOM with the name of your module directory, name depends on the kernel version and suffix that you gave in menuconfig). Regarding kernel configuration in menuconfig - I can't help you, you could use arch stock kernel config (zcat /proc/config.gz > /usr/src/linux-whatever/.config)
I do these kind of things this way - maybe someone else have a more elegant solution. -
Hi! Been trying to follow a thread about the Kernel-task and slow Mac performance. I did download EtreCheck and ran the report. I am a photographer using LR 4 and Chrome is my main browser. Both Chrome and LR (or PSE, or PS or Xee (a photo viewing app) make my computer run beyond ridiculously slow. I have so much work to do for clients and I get stopped in the middle of editing and cannot move forward because my beloved Mac is having issues. I did go through several old apps and the Application Support and Prefernces and deleted what I could of what I knew "what was what". I would appreciate any help in getting my Mac back on track. Thanks!

Problem description:
My Mac is running incredibly sluggish. Chrome continues to lag, and the spinning ball is ridiculous when I am working in LR. I did the EtreCheck and the report is below. I JUST cleared out my LR catalogs and now have just two folders in the catalog from a current wedding I am working on. I will have to consider using separate catalogs for my other genres or even smaller catalogs and just make a catalog for each client. Thanks for looking this over! I am so frustrated.

1.
Back up your Mac prior to making any changes to its file system. Time Machine has not been configured properly To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
2.
You inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.
For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. Apple's instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully. Pay particular attention to the easily overlooked passages directing you to restart your Mac when required.
3.
That Mac's Hosts file appears to have been modified. Fixing a modified Hosts file requires specific instructions. Apple Support Communities contributor and EtreCheck author etresoft recently added a User Tip discussing that concern, and how to correct it: Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file -
My MBP is Kernel Panicing, and I see the Crash Report is at 107% CPU
My fans are spinning quickly, and the whole thing sounds like a Jet Plane, even when no programs are open. I have been to the Genius bar 3 times this week.
They keep looking at it, doing disk checks, repairing permissions, then I left it with them for 3 days. They ran "diagnostic tests", but still came back with nothing.
They finally agreed to wipe my Hard Drive. Since I got it back Friday night, I had one more kernel panic, and I've managed to update Mountain Lion...but the Crash Report thing is still going on.
It's pretty obvious that the Genius bar here in London doesn't have a clue how to fix this, so what should I do?Here's the one from last night.

Installing Mavericks cause Kernel Panic and after installing too
Hi,
I worked with Mountain Lion and all was good, but I thought that would be nice to update to Mavericks.
And I'm not good in Mac OS, so I didn't prepare backup before, because believed that it have to work.
But during installation I got kernel panic several times, yeah. But installation process was continued and finally Mavericks was installed.
I was happy, but I shouldn't.
From time to time I'm getting kernel panic and I don't know what is reason.
The worst things that I can't rollback to ML, because for some reason Mavericks installing instead.
And I did clean install several times, and did cleaning NVRAM and PRAM, but it all didn't help to me.
I haven't Apple Support in my country, so I can't even come to service center.
And my last hope is your support.
Could you please look on a kernel panic log and say me what is wrong with it?

1333 MHz is the wrong memory.

Can't update to 10.6.8 kernel panic and pcscd.pub wrong block count
Hi there, as the title said, I cannot update to the recent 10.6.8 v1.1 (nor v1 for what it matters). All seems going fine till the iMac reboots, then a kernel panic is generated. Only way out is to reinstall 10.6.7 COMBO.
Both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior agree on the issue, they both say they have repaired and the iMac goes into kernel panic with again pcscd.pub block count error (should be 16 instead of 17). Re-installing 10.6.7 everything is happy again.
Any idea? Hard disk tests with Disk Warriors show nothing and the HD is journaled.See

IMac keeps freezing - kernel panics and other
My iMac keeps freezing on me. Sometimes I get a notice that my computer experience a kernel panic and upon restart have the option of sending the info to Apple, other times it just feezes and I have to do a hard restart but get no prompts about the improper shutdown. This usually happens when I'm working in Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects at the same time.
Am I just overloading the system? And if so, why would it allow me to do that? Shouldn't it just run really slowly or have one application freeze, not the entire system? This hasn't been a problem in the past, it just recently started happening more and more often. Do I need more Ram? That's pretty much the only thing I can upgrade. Here are my system specs, please let me know if you have any suggestions for things I can do to prevent this from happening again. Thank you! Thanks for the replies. Baltwo I'll try running those test and see if they find anything.
Here's a recent Kernel panic log:

A Kernel Panic and two Crashes since updating to 10.8.1
I've been running a 15" MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) for about a year and a half. It's factory stock (no hardware modifications) with a 2.8 Core 2 Duo processor and 4gig RAM with a 500GB HD. It came with 10.5 installed. I upgraded to 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8 respectively. Each time a new operating system came out, I did a clean install. My system has been 100% reliable up until I installed the 10.8.1 update. Since then, I've had a Kernel Panic and two separate crashes.
I doubt it's a hardware issue as it's never been suspect before. Also, I've run Disk Utility and verified the disk and permissions. No Problems there.
The first problem was the Kernel Panic, which occurred while I was in the guest account watching YouTube videos. The system went to a gray screen then gave me the typical "Panic" message and rebooted itself.
The second problem must have occurred while the computer was in sleep mode, as I don't recall any particular issue, but I found a CRASH log in the logs folder.
Finally, I encountered the most recent crash while I was exiting out of the ADMIN account on my computer. The system went to a gray screen with a rotating bezel indicator, and wouldn't return to the log-in screen. I had to manually cycle the power button in order for the computer to reboot.
I'm not sure what's going on.Hi. Since updating to 10.8 I've had numerous kernel panics on start-up. A restart always worked successfully, but it's getting annoying. I started out by replacing the HD with an SSD. That didn't work. Then I resent the PRAM/NVRAM. That seemed to work. Then I upgraded to 10.8.1 - and we're back to kernel panics.
Here's the log, and below it are photos of the initial kernel panic. :

Size of Kernel parameter and SGA
Hi,
Can you please suggest me the ideal size of kernel parameters and SGA?
Currently, I have installed 2GB RAM on my machine using Oracle 10.1 database version on Fedora Linux platform. The parameters are currently set as below:
kernel.shmall = 2097152 (2MB)
kernel.shmmax = 2147483648 (2048 MB)
kernel.shmmni = 4096
# semaphores: semmsl, semmns, semopm, semmni
kernel.sem = 250 32000 100 128
I will appreciate if you can give me an idea about the proper size of SGA including SHARED_POOL_SIZE,LARGE_POOL_SIZE AND JAVA_POOL_SIZE.
Thanks in advance.
JayeshOracle's install docs indicate practical minimums. The specific section for Linux x86 is at
http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15660/pre_install.htm#sthref264
The proper size of the pools is always dependent on the workload. It takes experience, understanding of the application and monitoring to size these properly - the realm of the DBA.
However, by setting the SGA_TARGET to some value (less than equal to SGA_MAX_SIZE) and setting these three parameters to '0', the system will use an effective compromise that dynamically changes based on workload.
My suggestion is that the SGA_TARGET and the PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET be set to ensure the system does not start swapping - when considering all the other normal memory requirements on the system. -
Fan running.. "kernel root" and "WindowServer"
pllleeeeaassee help!!!
my fan wont stop running, and when i go to activitiy monitor, the processes "kernel root" and "WindowServer" are both taking up almost 60% of my CPU each... i've already tried resetting the PMU and PRAM... but when i dont think the PMU is successfully resetting, because i always have the correct time and date when i boot up again..?
what do i do???my bad.. the file name is "kernel_task", not kernel root... "root" is the user though
i've repaired the permissions... also, i'm not running my computer from the adaptor alone, no battery... so the fan has quit running (since no battery) yet these two operations are still sucking the CPU like mad outta me.... what are they working so hard on? and how can i get them to stop? -
Hello again, Apple Friends.
Recently I have noticed that kernel_task in Activity Monitor is running at anywhere between 60MB and 200MB of RAM, which is really slowing things down. I have searched on the discussion boards the past few days and have found similar posts related to MB Air and old Powerbooks, but nothing about iBooks.
The kernel_task process will run, using up lots of RAM, even if I have no apps running whatsoever. If I let the iBook idle, over the course of 15 minutes (nothing running) it goes from 60MB to 150MB, with anywhere from 47 to 60 threads. That's when idling!
What I've tried to eliminate: (none of the following are the problem)
Firefox 3
any and all items / drivers in my login startup (the only ones I have not tried removing are those that are Apple)
resetting PRAM (did this)
Repaired disk permissions (did this 2 or 3 times, and each time after checking other items above).
I do not regularly have any peripherals attached, and the problem has existed without peripheral devices. I did get new RAM added a few months ago (I went from 516MB - or something like that - to 1.25GB) and I am wondering if this is part of the problem? But I have only noticed the problem recently. I'm not receiving any kernel panics, and so I'm not too worried, but I am really wondering if there is something amiss I should be worried about. And when I start using other major-memory apps (like iTunes, for example), the kernel_task process goes wayyyyy up (to 250MB or more).
I should add that I have also tried all suggestions listed in this thread, but to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas?Well, I have discovered something interesting. After your advice, BD, I tried a few things. First of all, after login, just leaving the computer idling, the kernel task does increase gradually over the course of 15 minutes -- I have tested this 3 times and it usually starts at around 60MB from login and creeps up to anywhere from 75MB to 120MB at the end of 15 minutes.
But then I wondered if it was somehow connected to my login account. I realized this problem only occurs under my main account. This account is not an admin account (I have a separate one for that). I logged in with 3 different accounts (boyfriend, Visitor, and my brother's) and none of them even had the kernel task running on login. Yet under my main account, it is running, starting at 60MB and with 47 threads.
Is this unusual? My next trick is to leave it idling for 30 minutes after login to see how much the memory use increases. But I am really curious now. -
Airport causing kernel panics and kp in safe boot.
Last week I got my first kernel panic in years. It happened while I was asleep and checking an extrenal drive for bad blocks with TechTool. It turns out that the drive indeed had bad blocks and found that the cpu was shut down when I awoke. I started up the computer and it wasn't able to stay on for more than 10 min max before the next kernel panic. I checked here for more advice on kernel panics and started to try to narrow the number of culprits. Everything was unplugged and still kp. Instaled a new drive with a week older system from Time Machine and still kp. Reset NVRAM and replaced pyhsical RAM and still kp. Removed the Airport Extreme card and still kp. Booted into Safe Mode after all of the previously mentioned and still kp. I'm now going to take the drive and swap it into another body that I have to see if the root is actually on the drive on the physical hardware of the cpu.
I was interested in this thread and read all of the links that jpl posted. Airport causing Kernel Panic (?) Jason then replied that it had been solved due to a "permissions problem" I wish he gave more info on what exactly he did to resolve the problem as it's been almost a week now without any work being done for me.
I've also noticed this very strange behavior that might shed some light onto the issue. When I open System Prefs and close the window there is a strange colored pattern that will always flash after the window has been closed. I tried to post it to my me page but for somereason it wouldn't play for me so there's that and the YouTube version too.
https://www.me.com/gallery/#100008/Prefs%20Screen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zrTt88YdBo
In addition when the computer has started up and the system loads. Checking Activity Monitor shows that there are 50 or more threads active for the the kernel_task. Inspecting this doesn't seem to show any useful information.
Finally here are a few of the recent crashes I hope that someone might be able to shed some light on this extremely frustrating problem for me.

Thanks in advance,
MaxMy vision is pretty poor, still cant see it, but...
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process. -

Having Problems with Kernel Panics and an External Hard Drive
I've been having Kernel Panics for a month now and have yet to resolve the issue. I know about Dr. Smokes guide to resolving them, but I'm working on a time-sensitive editing project in Final Cut Pro and therefore have not had time to fix my computer.
I am using an OWC external hard drive for the project, and today when I had a kernel panic and I rebooted my computer as I normally do. But, this time, my external hard drive icon was not on my desktop, and a message popped up that said, "The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer." Is there anyway to remedy this so that my computer reads my hard drive?Have you tried using Disk Utility to repair your ext. hard drive as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption?
Cheers!

Kernel crashes and freezes, "google software update" errors
I've been struggling to resolve a serious issue with my ibook G4 1.42 ghz, running 10.4.11, for many months now. It began to have frequent kernel panics, and my first assumption was that it was hard drive related, so in November I replaced the hard drive. I seemed to have fewer panics? but ket getting them, and then in late January decided it must be a logic board issue (I'm not on my 3rd logic board with this laptop), and I replaced the logic board. It started up fine, passes the hardware test without trouble, but still has kernel panics and now also occasionally just freezes and has to be force-restarted.
I tried an archive and install of the OS, but realized after I ran the first disc that the 2nd was missing and that I had accidentally put in my 2nd disc from my G5. It is running, but with the same freezing and kernel panics. I get constant error messages about "google software updater" having quit unexpectedly (also microsoft office updater, but I just trashed those files and it stopped)-- if this related to google software updater? Is that the software updater included in the OS? Am I right in assuming that this is a software problem, and if so do I need to buy new Tiger discs and do a clean install, or is it likely that something else is causing the problem? (Since a clean install means reinstalling all my software, and I don't have the keys for some of it after all these years, I want that as a last resort).
Any ideas on this? One of the known causes of kernel panic in portable iBook G4 computers, is related
to the AirPort card; when it, or a connector to it goes bad. When that's the case, the
user can try and see if turning OFF the AirPort in software resolves the issue; or go
into the computer and unplug the AirPort card (or remove it.) I've seen a few online
images of the removal/replacement of the internal located AirPort card; in those G4
iBooks without one under the keyboard, it is much more difficult to access/replace.
And the issue may not be in the card, but on the connector to the logic board.
Other causes of kernel panic may be related to a RAM upgrade chip added to the
computer (the basic RAM is soldered on the logic board, so it can't be removed)
so, when that is a cause of kernel panic; and removing the upgrade RAM resolves
the issue, a different RAM chip of correct specs can be tried to see if that helps.
The 'google software updater' caused a crash in one of my G4 Macs, or maybe two.
I removed it. The specific updater appears to be for use with Google Earth. I have
not reinstalled G.E. since the apparent related crash in one of my Macs. I reinstalled
it in my iBook G4; but don't use it much. The 'google software updater' was added
again in the computer on a new installation of Google Earth.
With an older iBook or other portable computer, it is wise to replace the original
hard disk drive when it gets old and has significant run-time on it; but the panic
and kernel notice may have had no root cause in the computer's hard disk drive.
Perhaps someone else, seeing this, may have other experience and ideas on
how to handle the matter; or a better troubleshooting path, since I have none.
Good luck & happy computing!
