Kernel panic after full system restore
Yesterday I noticed that my computer was quite slow. Seeing as how the hd has never been formatted since I have bought the computer in 2006 I thought the drive was badly fragmented. Since there are no free defrag solutions available for mac, I thought I would just format the drive and do a system restore using time machine. I did a full format with 1 pass of zeros then did a system restore. After the restore when the computer rebooted, I got a kernel panic. The kernel panic mentioned something along the lines of "Version mis-match between Kernel and CPU". I then chose to restore to an earlier backup but that yielded the same results.
I have done a lot of googling and most of the solutions to this problem indicate that the restore is being initiated from a Leopard install disc rather than a Snow Leopard install disc. I am using a snow leopard disc.
In the end, I did get my system working by installing snow leopard over top of itself then applying the latest combo update. The reason for this post is so I can hopefully find out why I got the kernel panic. This incident had cost me a lot of time and if I cannot rely on time machine as a backup solution then there is really no point in using it.
Thanks.

Doubtful. See: [About disk optimization with Mac OS X|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1375].

Something in your installation of OSX was probably corrupted, damaged, or missing, and Time Machine backed up the corruption (as would any backup utility). So when you restored, you brought the problem back.
That's likely also the reason your Mac was running "quite slow."

I just did a full system restore using time machine, and I have a question. After this is done, I noticed that I had to set up my external hard drive, which I used to do the system restore, once again to work with time machine. Because of this, time machine starts over from the very beginning and the previous backups seem to be lost. However, when I drill down on my external hard drive, I see two folders "mynameImac1" and "mynameImac2". Imac 2 is my newest backup. So what about my old backups? Apparently they're still on my external hard drive under Imac 1. Can I access these time machine backups or should I just delete this folder?
Thanks,
NickWhatever you do, do NOT delete that folder via the Finder. You will hopelessly choke your Mac. Never change or delete anything of Time Machine's that way; it may get very grumpy.
TM has started a new sequence of backups.
To view them via Time Machine, hold down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your menubar. That will change the +Enter Time Machine+ option to +Browse Other Time Machine Disks.+ It's a bit misleading in your case, but will show you the old set of backups.
If your TM drive/partition is big enough, you may want to keep the old backups. If not, your best bet may be to erase the drive with Disk Utility and let it start over.
If you decide to keep them, monitor TM's backups for a while, to be sure it's "thinning" the old set properly. Otherwise, when the disk gets near full, it will start deleting the oldest of the new set, not the old set.
The easiest way to do that is to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window.
TM should "thin" most backups after 24 hours, but keep the first of the day for a month. Then it deletes the dailies, except for one per week, which it keeps as long as there's room.
If you want, you can manually delete TM backups, from the TM interface, via the instructions in item 12 of the +Frequently Asked Questions+ post at the top of this forum. -
Unable to boot up after full system restore
I was having some serious slowdowns with my computer. I did multiple RAM and HD hardware tests, everything seemed to be working fine. I had recently deleted a bunch of files in order to free up some HD space, so I thought that may be the culprit. So I did a Time Machine backup and restored the Powerbook to it's original 10.3 software. All was fine. Then I upgraded back to 10.5 and all was fine. Then I did a Time Machine full system restore overnight and got the message "Your restore was successful, you must now restart your computer" (or something to that effect). Now I get the start-up chime and startup screen (apple logo) but then the computer shuts itself down. I have reset the PMU and PRAM to no effect. I have tried starting it up with the time machine HD attached - doesn't help. I guess I'll need to hit the genius bar but wanted to ask the friendly discussion forum folks first. thanks in advance.
Did you sort it? Same thing happened to me and I am having to do another 8 hour restore!

There seems to be a problem with that file. See the blue box in #C3 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

Kernel Panic after Time Machine Restore
Hi all,
I've been doing a bit of research about my problem but am not really sure how to proceed or what to really do... I had to get a new hard drive for my 2009 MacBook Pro. I installed from the disk that came with the computer, which is Leopard, so now it's running 10.5.7. I go back into the install disk and select to restore from a Time Machine backup but upon restarting, I get kernel panic. The OS X on my Time Machine is Lion, and I don't have a Snow Leopard disk to use to startup from, so how can I get from Leopard to Snow Leopard and then try and redo my restoration? I've erased the disk and reinstalled just Leopard and my computer is working fine.
Thanks!RAM and drivers are the most likely causes of kernel panics. The hardware test that comes with the Mac's original installer disk will tell you sometimes when RAM is bad. https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 is how to run the hardware test. Damaged files can cause kernel panics too, but I would not attempt to repair damaged files on a system whose backup status itself is unknown. You should have at least two separate off Mac backups before attempting a repair. Bring your Time Machine backup to another Mac, and clone it to be sure if you don't have a second one, before attempting repair its directory. Here's how to repair the directory:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6412
Other file damage caused by system "maintenance" tools can be more insideous. MacKeeper is the worst, as this tip explains:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036
Make sure the RAM is made for the age of the model in question. For instance a Late 2008 MacBook Pro takes 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM, yet some 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM will not work with it.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6413 will help you identify your Mac.
http://www.crucial.com/ http://www.macsales.com/ http://www.datamem.com all sell lifetime warranty RAM by age and model. Do not buy ValueRAM. https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 is how to run the hardware test. -
T43 - Lost USB and wireless after full system restore
Hi,
I've been struggling to get my work system back online for two days now. It's a T43 which had become unbearably slow so after 3 years I decided to blow it away and use the system restore to set it back to factory. However as seems to be the case all around, factory in this case means...nothing works and you have to manually install all of the drivers.
I upgraded my bios to 1.29 and embedded controller to 1.06
I installed drivers for every device and after a full day of futzing finally rid my device manager of unknown devices (mostly) Here is a shot of it...
Device Manager
However the most troublesome things have been wireless and USB. Given that I had no idea which wireless device was in my system I tried updating the driver through device manager and pointed it at each of the three available wireless adapters on the Lenovo T43 drivers page. The first two I tried were rejected, but the third one took and the device finally started. However, when I point it at my wireless network it just keeps switching back and forth between "Not Connected" state and "Aquiring address state". I finally disabled it. This device worked fine as did my wireless hub prior to the system restore.
Worst of all however is my USB. After first doing the restore, all of the USB host controllers were unknown. I could find no specific driver for them on the Lenovo site so I just right clicked on each of them and selected "update driver" and let it find whatever it could for them. Low and behold they all popped right up one at a time and were identified along with the root hub. At that point two new unidentified "other devices" were enumerated, one being my printer and the other my USB Western Dig backup drive. The hard drive's power turned on indicating a signal from USB, however it never popped into the list of available drives in My Computer. I was able to install the Samsung printer drivers from CD which took the printer out of the list of "other devices", installed USB printing support, and set up the printer in the "my printers" directory. However I can't print to it. Print jobs just sit in the queue and the printer acts like nothing is happening.
It's terribly frustrating because all of my backed up work and environment settings is stored on my USB drive. If I can't get USB working again, I'm in serious trouble. Thus far, I've tried disconnecting the devices and reconnecting (it makes a system ding but nothing else happens). I've tried uninstalling all USB devices from the manager and then doing a scan to reinstall them again. Both times I've tried this, the devices once again come up as "other devices" and I have to repeat the earlier steps to get them property identified.
I can't find any excuse at this point these devices not to be working. Can anyone please offer any further suggestions? If I was unclear about anything I'll be happy to clarify the problem. I'm despertate to get this thing working again fast.
Thank You !!
Solved!
Go to Solution.OK, let's try the older one:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-62875
You may want to delete the entire Win subfolder before installing it, though.
Now, honestly, I don't quite understand why recovery disks would skip this driver. I've restored hundreds of T43/p machines and have never encountered such an issue.
Good luck.
Cheers,
George

Hey I'm a novice on computers but i've just done a full system restore on my laptop and put it back to factory spec, obviously i backed up all the data on an external hard-drive but when i have re-installed itunes and gone to import all my old music files from my previous itunes library as mpeg4 files it keeps telling me i don't have permission??!! *** someone please explain or tell me how to get music on to my new itunes without having to re-import every cd i own which is alot!!!
Other than iMovie, GB always incorporates the audio files into the GB package. So just save or move the GB project to the external drive, and you're done - anything you import, edit or record will be saved to the external drive.

Hi coldengray
Did you try to start from your System-CD? Hold down C-key during startup, start DiskUtility from the menu and verify/repair disk and permissions there.
If the CD is not available you can also connect your TimeMachine-Disk, select it as startup volume in System Preferences/StartupDisk, restart and then run DiskUtility from folder Applications/Utilities
Good luck P -
Mail Message Restore Stuck after completing a full system restore
I just completed a full system restore on my Macbook Pro using the "Restore From Backups" function. Upon the first boot up, I was greeted with a "Mail Message Import" Dialog Box asking to import my messages. It began importing alot of my folders but then became stuck on the "Deleted Messages" folder with 4500 out of 7000 messages already imported. The progress bar sits and never moves and the Time remaining amount begins to increase and increase. I have the option to cancel and if I do cancel and attempt to open Mail again, then I must complete the process over again. Ultimately becoming stuck at the same point of the import process each time.
FYI
I have 5 email accounts set up (one iMap) on this machine.
Where is this being imported from?
Can I point it to another backup directory?
Any Help is much appreciated.
THanks,Thanks Man! That WOrked!!!!! Your the best! and Thank you for those Kind words! Happy MacBooking!!

Power Mac G5 Kernel Panics After Waking From Sleep
My G5 has been kernel panicking intermittently the last few weeks. I brought it in to the Apple Store and they ran Apple System Diagnostics (ASD) on it, but found no errors. However, they were able to get it to kernel panic after running it on a full processor load for a couple hours.
After getting the machine back, it has been pretty stable, but it will kernel panic within a minute of waking it up from sleep. Therefore, I can't put the machine to sleep anymore. Once in awhile, it also kernel panics during the boot process.
A few times, including today, the memory also shows up incorrectly in the System Profiler. Right now, my G5 says only 3 GB of RAM are installed when there are actually 4 GB. The Profiler shows six 512 MB chips when there are actually four 512 MB chips and two 1 GB chips in the machine.
Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this and how I might be able to fix it?
Thanks. Thanks for the suggestion. I disconnected the MyBook drive from the Firewire 800 port, then put the G5 to sleep again. When I woke it from sleep, it ran almost five minutes, then kernel panicked.
So I did a test with half the RAM and had the same problem. Then I tested the other half of the RAM and the same kernel panics happened. I tried different DIMM slots and it kernel panicked no matter what I tried. The last few times, it just froze without displaying the kernel panic screen.
The kernel panics started happening when I installed the August security update. So I decided to install Leopard on a secondary internal drive. The installation went smoothly and I ran some programs for a new minutes with no external drive attached. Then I put the computer to sleep. When I woke it up about an hour later, the cursor was gone and the screen was frozen.
So I am pretty confused. The computer runs fine as long as I don't put it to sleep. But if I wake it up from sleep, it is a ticking time bomb before it crashes. Is there anything else I can try? -
Kernel panics after upgrading to OS 10.8.5
I installed the 10.8.5 update on my early 20098 model Mac Pro. I thought it strange that I had to restart the computer twice after the update. But everything initially seemed to work fine after the update. But while I was updating the OS on my Macbook Pro, leaving my Mac Pro unattended for about 45 minutes, I came back to the Mac Pro and discovered that there was a kernal panic warning on the screen to the effect that the computer shut down because of a problem. I was given the option to restart the computer and it seemed to work normally for the next few hours. But when I checked on it the next morning, the same kernel panic message was displayed. I tried starting up in Safe Mode. As far as I can tell everything works well in safe mode, at least for the 3 or 4 hours I left it in that mode. Back in standard boot the kernel alerts started back again. This happens so far only when I am not actively using the computer but when it is left unattended. The computer is set to sleep after 1 hour.
An internet search suggested that there might be a conflict with a .kext file. There are only 5 .kext files loaded at startup that are non-Apple ones. I removed three of them since they were not critical for the use of my computer. But two of the .kext files are necessary for the proper function of the Mac Pro as it is configured. There is an "Accelsior.kext" file that is required for my OWC Mercury Accelsior PCI Express SSD card and two .kext files necessary for my CalDigit USB 3.0 Host Adapter (CalDigitFastIO.kext and CalDigitUSBxHCI.kext). Removing all but the CalDigit .kext files and the Accelsior file did not correct the problem. Next I simply re-installed the 10.8.5 updater. This did not correct the problem. I think I will go ahead and remove the CalDigit .kext files as a trial since I can operate the computer without USB 3.0 for a while. But beyond this I don't know what I should do next.

Thanks for any input or help. Unless there is a simple fix I think I will have to revert back to my pre-update backup copy of 10.8.4
JohnGlenn,
Since you do not have the CalDigit USB 3 card installed and we have the exact same inducible kernel panics after update to 10.8.5, I think we can rule out a role for the CalDigit card in this matter. Apparently, according to Larry at OWC, he and other users are not experiencing problems with the Accelsior card after the update. This suggests it is not a universal problem but it affects only Mac Pros running certain software or hardware add-ons. It would be interesting to know in what other regards your system resembles mine in some unique fashion that might explain this problem.
You have the MacPro 5,1 while I have the MacPro 4,1 so we know that it is not isolated to just one model of the Mac Pro. I have 20GB RAM installed with a module in each of the slots. I have SuperDrives installed in both bays. I have all 4 internal HD bays occupied. The Rember app indicates that there are no problems with my RAM. I have multiple external FW HDs, a Zoom USB modem, and 2 monitors attached to the Mac. It is hard to imagine any of these features as being related to the problem at hand. I might try removing all attached devices to see if this makes a difference. Meanwhile I'll await a follow up report from OWC.

Can I do a full system restore of a 10.5 system by booting on a 10.6 CD?
Dear all,
I am trying to support my parents whos MacBook just failed (harddisk dead). They have now gotten a new harddisk installed and wants to restore the setup from their TimeCapsule.
I would prefer to do a full system restore, so that it gets back to exatly how they had it before. A 'user only' setup would require them to reinstall all third party apps including MS Office etc., which will be tricky for them.
Few questions:
1. Does a 'full system restore' restore everything, including applications and system files? Will it be going back to an exact clone of what they had?
2. They ran a Mac OS 10.5.x system, but cannot find their installation CD. Can I lend them my Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) CD to boot, while still restoring their 10.5.x system? (I don't want them to have 10.6 as I am not sure about compability with all their 3rd party software/drivers etc.)
3. Any other things I should keep in mind for a successful restore?
Thanks,

No. Well, you can do the restore, but it won't boot.
You need a Leopard disc. It can be the original that came with their Mac, or a Retail (black) version, and it doesn't matter what version of Leopard it is, since you don't load OSX but only use the Installer utility. Thus borrowing one doesn't violate the license.
They really should have a Leopard disc, not only to do a restore, but also if they need to do a +*Repair Disk+* on the internal HD. And they would need the original disc, for the Apple Hardware Test on it; AppleCare will send them a replacement for a nominal fee.
3. Any other things I should keep in mind for a successful restore?
Yes. See #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum, for detailed instructions. Note the caution there, under the green box, about turning TM off immediately after the restore. -
Kernel panic after 10.5.3 install - can't get to desktop
When 10.5.3 came out I ran Software Update, and it installed itself and then asked me to restart my system. So I did. But before my MBP finished restarting, a gray curtain came down and told me that I had to... restart... my... system. (It looked like a kernel panic screen.)
I restarted and the same thing happened. After a couple of iterations of this I realized that something was broken and it wasn't going to fix itself, so I booted up in Safe Mode. That worked OK. It's what I'm using right now. Things seem to work normally except that certain functions, like playing audio, are disabled.
How do I troubleshoot this? Thanks.OK, here's the panic log for the first kernel panic after the 10.5.3 download. Does this help?
