Kernel Panic after installing 16 GB RAM in 2010 13" MacBook Pro
Hi
I have been having some problems with my 2010 13" MacBook Pro.
After installing 16 GB RAM, made by Corsair, I have had four Kernel Panics so far.
The thing is that the RAM are 1333 MHz, and my computer only takes 1066 MHz RAM. But I downclocked both the sticks to 1066 MHz, so it should work right? They also passed Memtest86, so I don't know what is wrong.
I also did a clean install of Mountain Lion, on a brand new hard drive, but I had another Kernel Panic.
Here is the latest log:

Getting a kernel panic once in a while is not my definition of "My Mac works just fine..."
You installed the incorrect ram. Get the ram specified for your computer. In theory ram should downclock to the computer's bus speed but in practice this does not always work, as you found out.

Kernel Panic Happened On Newly Brought 15-inch (i7 model) Macbook Pro
Kernel panic happened twice since I using my newly brought Macbook Pro for a few days. I hope someone or apple staff can help. This is very annoying and I get stuck on my work because of this. I going thru several generation of macs already and I hope I will not feel disappointed about the latest one...
I'm working on music so the major application I'm running are Logic/Protools/Native Instrument Software/East West Software. I didn't install any third-party hardware device (expect using external HD for storage) and this is my machine config:

Model Identifier: MacBookPro6,2

Kernel Panic happened 2 times when I'm running Logic and browsing thru safari. That particular website contain online streaming audio (not background audio that loaded automatically). Here the Kernel Panic log I got:

Thank you very much for all the answer and tips.Hi all fellows. First of all thanks for your reply!
I'm having the newest model as well (i.e. running OS 10.6.5) with upgraded i7 to 2.8G. I didn't change or added any RAM so it just running with the factory one. And of course I didn't do anything on hardware installation/replacement as well (just USB/Firewire device which for sure I tried to unplug all and see if problem persist). I run the EXTENDED Apple Hardware Test already and it found no problem...
Like all user and apple suggested I update everything from software update and also the EFI firmware which apple say it making issue on freezing system (according to the list from apple http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 I don't actually need to do so but I just download and run the installer). I tried to run the disk utilities and it report problem. So I start up the MBP from installation disk and run disk utilities to repair it. It said repaired successfully and I verify the disk again and it report "appear to be OK". However, kernel panic again...
I'm wondering if it something related to safari too! Since for the 2 kernel panic I experience (in 3 days use of a brand new MBP) it react instantly when I browse that website. And it happen after I installed the latest version of FLASH player (version 10). Sure I have installed quite a number of application as well Logic/Protools/NI Software/East West Software...etc but I have the exactly same set of application on my Macbook (intel core 2 duo 2008 black model with OS 10.5.8) and it so fine and solid thru the years...
I'm not a mac expert but it sounds like something goes wrong with compatibilities between application and the latest OS. I'm not planned to do clean reinstall or exchange for a new machine since the problem may persist if my guessing is right. And I'm in middle of my work so I can't bare spend a few days to setup everything again...
What I going to do now is backup the whole system and projects. Try to buy and run a more powerful disk repair application and rebuild the disk. Hope it works for the moment...wish me luck... -
i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
thanks for your helpIt means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
button.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive. -
After installing the new Yosemite OS on my Macbook pro late 2013 touch trap has its own mind. Any others with this problem? What should we do?
Even I tried to get back to Maverick but the touch pad doesn't work again. well, it works for a couple hours then start doing things but its own. it is so annoying.Hello josefromlaie,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Hi i recently bought 8gb of ram and installed it in my mid 2010 13' macbook pro, but whenever i start my computer it freezes at the apple sign in the startup. I just put back my default 4gb of ram back into my computer and it runs fine. Any suggestions?
jamiesfromportland, greetings: I do not take issue with your very valid reasons for purchasing RAM from Apple. However by recommending not to purchase RAM from third party vendors I would suggest is unfounded advice. Most of the problems that occur with third party RAM are attributable to the lack of adherence to the required specifications, viz. this post.
I would be willing to wager that purchasing RAM from reputable vendors such as OWC or Crucial one would find similar fail/success ratios as those purchased from Apple. In both cases this assumes that the specifications are adhered to.
I have always purchased RAM upgrades from third party vendors with no performance issues. True that I do so to save money but I do not skimp on quality.
Ciao. -
Kernel panic after installing additional ram
Hi there.
(I think this should go here, not in laptop issues because it seems to be more hardware-related)
I have a laptop Acer Aspire 2920Z with 2x512 Mb stock ram and I recently bought an memory upgrade 2x2gb. Any of them works when inserted separately, but when I install both, I see kernel panic upon starting X on my i686 Arch installation (and /proc/meminfo shows that I have only 3Gb).
The same behaviour occurs when I try to boot from latest Arch install iso or x86_64 archbang livecd.
My BIOS is updated to latest version and it shows that I have 4Gb of RAM installed.
Right now I installed x86_64 linux kernel but I still have kernel_panic on booting my machine.
Is there any chance that I can use 4gb ram on my laptop?
Also, what are the ways to save those error messages that kernel panic provides? (aside from just taking a picture of the screen with my camera)cra wrote:I installed kernel by changing architecture param in pacman.conf, running pacman -Syy and pacman -S linux, as described in the corresponding page on the wiki, but without reinstalling every single package I have
Do that step.
EDIT:

Wait, you mean just booting the livecd gets you a kernel panic? Insert both of them at the same time, and the test them with memtest86+
Chances are your motherboard pins could have a problem. A problem that is noticiable when you insert both sticks.
Test them with memtest86+.

com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCButtons 220.8Hi everyone!
I have this exact problem too!
Installed upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion as soon as it came out. Everything was ok until I installed my Kingston SSDNow 128gb SSD and 2 Kingston 4GB DDR3 RAM sticks (8gigs total), I cloned my HDD onto my brand new SSD, everything worked great.... until I got my first kernel panic...
After lots of times of having to force-reboot my mac because of those kernel panics, I finally decided to do a clean install of lion. I did, and everything worked fine until, guess what?, kernel panic.
I'm starting to think that it may be my SSD or my RAM sticks that are defective but I can't actually believe that cause they are both brand new (bought them toghether 2 months ago).
So... today my mac got completely fu@#*ed up... it wouldn't even recognize my external HDD. I had to backup to a network shared drive and did a clean install (again...).
That was 6 hs ago, and now I'm posting this after a kernel panic.
I dont know what to do... did any one found a solution for this?
I'd apreciate your help very much.
Best regards,
Santiago

Kernel panic after installing Yosemite (when connected to power source)
My Macbook Pro is crashing regularly since I installed Yosemite a couple of weeks back. This only happens when the laptop is connected to a power source and not in use. I get the following Kernel Panic message. Would really appreciate some help since this is beyond my pay grade
Thanks

In order to help you troubleshoot the cause of this Kernel Panic, I would recommend you use the troubleshooting in the following article:
OS X Yosemite: If your Mac restarts and a message appears
If your Mac restarts unexpectedly, an error known as a kernel panic occurred. After the restart, you’ll see a message that your computer restarted because of a problem.
The most likely cause is faulty software. A kernel panic can also be caused by damaged or incompatible hardware, including external devices attached to your Mac.
Important: To print these instructions, click the Share button in the Help window, then choose Print.
If the kernel panic is caused by a known problem, the faulty software is identified. To make sure that this software doesn’t continue to cause kernel panics, move it to the Trash.
If the faulty software is not identified and your Mac continues to experience kernel panics, try the following:
Restart your Mac in safe mode. If it successfully starts up in safe mode, choose Apple menu > App Store, click Updates, then install any available updates.
Uninstall any plug-ins or other enhancement software from manufacturers other than Apple. If you recently updated OS X or an app, plug-ins and other software that worked in the past may no longer be compatible. Read the manufacturer’s documentation (including Read Me notes) to be sure the software is compatible with your version of OS X.
Disconnect all USB and FireWire devices, except for the Apple keyboard and mouse. Remove hardware upgrades from other manufacturers, such as random–access memory (RAM) and Peripheral Component Interconnect cards. Then try restarting your Mac.
If this resolves the issue, reconnect one device at a time, restarting your Mac after reconnecting each one, until you determine which device is causing the problem.
Reset parameter random-access memory (PRAM).
Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These apps can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.
If the steps above don’t help, try reinstalling OS X.
Note: If you moved or renamed an OS X system file or folder, you must reinstall OS X. It won’t work to just replace or rename the specific item.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
All the very best,
Sterling -
Kernel panics after installing OS X Maverics
After i installed OS X Maverics I have experienced ocationally unexpected kernel panics. Other then that Maverics seems to function well, and I had no problems with the installation. Because of this I formatted my harddrive and installed everything again, but still the kernel panics occur. What to do?
I tried searching the web for a solution, but non of the solutions seemed to help me. I have no kernel extensions installed.
I can't see any patterns for when the kernel panics occure, or what causes them.
I'll post the latest crash log here. I really hope someone can help me with this one.

Kernel panic after installing a USB 3.0 PCIe card
Hello everybody,
I have a recent issue with my Mac Pro (early 2008). I just bought a USB 3.0 PCIe card from eBay for my Mac Pro and as the seller mentioned there are drivers for Mountain Lion. After installing the cards drivers that the seller sent me and plugged the PCIe card, whenever I connect a USB 3.0 device (I have only one) the Mac Pro is forced to reboot. If I leave the drive connected after the reboot I get a kernel panic message during the "Grey Apple Boot Screen" and the computer continues to reboot again and again. I have no issues with USB 2.0 devices at the same card. The kernel I get is the following. Does anyone have any idea? it seems like the kext installed with the card {net.osx86.kexts.VLIUSBXHCI(1.2.4)} causes the problem but the seller told me he has sold a lot of them, and i 'm the first with such a problem.
Thank you in advance.

To me it's not worth saving a few bucks from some generic card/driver pair to risk problems and perhaps even malware.

Kernel Panic after installing Mac OSX Lion
I have a late 2009, 15" Macbook Pro that I've upgraded to mountain lion about three weeks ago and when I upgraded the first time I kept getting kernel panics like no tommorrow. I used my flash drive which had lion uploaded to it to "downgrade" to lion in case this happens. I also had mountain lion on the flash drive to so I did a clean install of mountain lion through my flash drive. After that, kernel panics still seem to appear. I got frustrated and called apple support, and lets say that after many hours of testing, installing, and configuring that they just told me to simply go to an apple store, which was a two hour drive from Pine Plains, NY to Danbury, CT only to have them reenstall mountain lion (again) through a network. When I finally got it back and tested it for an hour I thought things would be fine... But lo and behold, another kernel panic appeared. I've taken the liberty to track the programs that I've installed and used during the testing as well as the kernel panic that was reoccuring.
Macbook Pro "Panic" Run test
Software installed:
Adobe Shockwave Player
Adobe Flash Player
Adobe Reader
Software Used:
Safari - Surfed the web to test system stability.
watched a youtube video to test system stability.
Terminal - Changed, created and deleted test directories to test system stabilityiTunes - Downloaded a song and played it to test system stability. Cinch - Installed and ran cinch to test system stability. iPhoto - Installed and ran iPhoto to test system stability.Notes:
10 min - system appears to be stable, changed the energy saver setting from "Better Battery Life" to "Performance".
24min - installed software (see software installed) and used Safari, Terminal, and iTunes. System still appears to be stable.
34min - switched energy settings from "Performance" to "Better Battery Life", restarted the system. System still stable.
38min - secure deleted a file, system still stable.
46min - Shut down and powered up a computer.
1 hour - Installed and ran iPhoto, and Cinch.
9 hours - installed google chrome. Surfed the net (mostly youtube.com)
10 hours - first kernel panic, during surfing!

I'll try to figure out how to read this as soon as possible, but until then I need your help to solve this problem. That panic was not caused by third-party software.
If the panic is recurrent, the possibilities are (1) a damaged OS X installation; (2) a hardware fault, which could be internal or in a wired peripheral device; and (3) an obscure bug in OS X.
You can rule out the first possibility by reinstalling the OS. Probably there will be no change. In that case, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or unless it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at leasttwo independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
Kernel Panics after installing 10.6
Immediately after installing 10.6, my MacBook Pro started having kernel panics. Below I have pasted in the two most recent. I have tried to uninstall lightspeedsystems, parallels, and vmware. Light Speed makes the antivirus software we use at school (I'm the technology director for a K-12 school). I cannot seem to get those three programs uninstalled.
In the past few days, it has run long periods of time and short periods of time before it forced me to shut down. Currently, it runs for a short period of time and forces me to restart.
It seems to run longer when I run boot in safe mode, but I cannot say that definitively. It forces me to shutdown after a certain amount of time, not associated with my intentional use of any piece of software. It will even force me to shut down if I leave it at the login screen.
After I did a safe boot, it did not have a kernel panic for a few days. Then I reinstalled 10.6 and it ran fine for one day without a kernel panic. I also updated to 10.6.2 using software update and that has not stopped the kenel panics.
I would like help learning how to completely uninstall things in 10.6, since parallels, vmware, and lightstpeed will not go away and I want them to since they are listed in the kernel panic dump.
I would like other suggestions. I am having to post this from my PC because my Mac will run about 20 seconds longer than it takes to copy and paste the kernel panic reporting dump into a gmail and send it to myself.

I'm well aware of that. In fact, that's why when you make a backup, a clone is recommended*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
or using Time Machine.
The backup in question would be able to give you a point to recover your files.
The original installer discs do have your iLife bundle that came with your Mac, and restore directions here explain how to get it back when your backup doesn't have it:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61802
For more on what is included with Mac OS X, and what iLife is only included with system restore discs, see this user tip:

Mavericks Kernel panic after installing xcode
Hi,
I was stupid enough to install an older version of Xcode (3.2.5) on Mavericks and during the installation, my Mac completely crashed. It just went black. After rebooting, I get a kernel panic each time. The error dump mentions "Mac OS version not yet set" so I assume the kernel panic occurs even before the OS is trying to load. It also mentions something about Kernel Extensions in backtrace: com.apple.iokit.CHUDKernLib.
From what I've read so far, it seems that older Xcode versions try to install 32bit kernel extensions, causing the problem. But how do I fix that?
What can I do?
- booting into safe mode or single user mode does not work (same kernel panic): there seems to be a CHUD removal tool available, but as I cannot boot into safe mode, I cannot run it.
- booting into recovery mode works: I tried checking the hard disk for errors (all was fine). So I can also access the terminal. But now what?
- I cannot do a fresh install of MacOSX: gives an unknown error warning
- I cannot restore from Time Capsule: there are no backups available (which is untrue)
I read an article somewhere that I should move the kernel extensions out of the way, but I cannot seem to find them. There are no CHUD kext files in the /System/Library/Extensions folder.
Have they moved in Mavericks?Hi,

Most likely, some folders were inadvertently excluded from your backups, and as a result you can't restore your data in Recovery, Setup Assistant, or Migration Assistant.
Starting from a clean installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Enter Time Machine and press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible.* Select the one you want and navigate to your home folder (in the Users folder at the top level of the old startup volume.)
You should now be able to restore your user data. I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.
You'll have another problem if this is a new computer, or if you erased the startup volume: The next time you back up, Time Machine won't recognize any files as being the same as they were before, and will make a full copy of all files. There might not be enough space on one or more of your backup volumes for that. There are different ways of dealing with that situation, depending on your needs. The easiest way is to set your backup drives aside, if possible, until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on them, then erase them and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on one or more empty storage devices. If that solution isn't workable for you, ask for instructions.
*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting
Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu, which has an icon that looks like a clock running backwards. Select the backups of your computer by its previous name. If you don't have the Time Machine menu, open the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar
