Kernel panic and  freezing

Can anyone help, in the past 4 months I have had two new logic boards fitted to try and solve the problem of kernel panics and , the message saying 'please restart your computer. now since the last repair 10 days ago it has now starting freezing on me.
Apple not much help, saying take it back to be reapired again. would a reinstall of the OS solve the problem? and if I did would I lose data
Thanks in advance for replies.

I've responded to your other post as I hadn't seen this one - have a look there.
Kernels are usually, but not inevitably, hardware related and RAM is the first suspect - but again it isn't the only suspect.
Chesck the other thread. :-))

  • Help with kernel panic and freezing screen?

A few months ago I had kernel panic screens about twice, but the problem didn't recur again for a while. Over the last two weeks, however, I've had two more kernel panics, and the screen freezes (mouse, all actions, etc) and the machine has to be manually restarted about every five minutes.
I've tested the two ram sticks, erased and re-installed the OS but had no luck resolving the issue.
I followed the link on resolving kernel panic problems from earlier threads to troubleshoot as much as possible. I don't have the original software so can't do a few steps, but on the whole have had no luck.
I don't have any external or USB devices hooked up when it fails. I do occasionally use USB pen drives, but that doesn't seem to be related. I bought a new, non-apple power source a while back, too, but also don't think that's related.
Before I bought the laptop from a friend, he installed a different hard drive, but I believe it came from another G4 Ti machine. He left two screws out of the bottom of the case.
I'm thinking mainboard or possible hard drive? Any ideas?
Also, since reinstalling the harddrive, I've had no error report message come up when the machine restarts, and there isn't an error log file, at least not for kernel panics (that I can find.) Before I reinstalled the OS, I read the error reports and they said something about kernels....but I don't remember what, specifically.
If there are other useful logs I could post, let me know and I'll find them. Are the console logs or directory service logs of any use?
Thanks in advance for any help or any advice...!

    Hi tjk
    - Thanks for the help.
I've tested the two ram sticks
    How?
I took out each stick one at a time and ran the machine with a single instead of both.
I have dual 256 sticks. The original, and a Samsung which came with it when I bought it used.
In both cases, the same problem occurred.
How much free space do you have available on your HD?
If not 5GB or more, this could be causing issues.
I had about 20GB free. Now it's running with 70Gb free and still the same problems. It's an 80 GB hard drive that was installed into the PB when I bought it a few months ago. I had the machine for about three weeks first, and didn't have any of these problems with the other hard drive in it.
I don't have the install disk, so can't run the disk utility repair, correct. I've also not been able to get the PB to boot from the disk instead of the hard drive. It brings up only the hard drive as a selection to boot from, and spins up the OSX DVD, then ejects it each time.
...not sure why...I've been holding down option when restarting to boot from other drives -- if there's another way to boot from the disk, maybe that would work...
Have a look at the Orange Ribbon Cable Issue/Fix and see if
it might apply to your PB. Which Ti do you have btw?
This is a really interesting link and for a bit I thought it sounded exactly like the problem...but I have the original TiBook, 500 Mhz so the trackpad cable doesn't run through the same spot. Maybe there's something else shorting out or pinching underneath...I'll take a look, but I'm not necessarily hardware savvy enough to know what to look for.
    Thanks again for any suggestions.

  • Constant Kernel Panic and Freezes

Hello. I've recently upgraded to SL on my MBP (clean install) about a month ago. It's been working flawlessly until this week, where at random times, my computer freezes up and the screen starts to flicker. When I try to restart, I get the screen that says I need to restart (kernel panic screen). Sometimes it takes multiple (as in 5 or 6) tries of restarting before I can boot up. I've tried software update, repairing permissions, resetting PRAM, etc. and nothing has seemed to work. Does anyone have any other possible solutions for me to try or any insight? Any help would be appreciated as I am a student and need my computer to be working. Thanks. Here is the log:

  • IMac kernel panics and freeze

My iMac is one year old and has worked fine but two days ago my iMac G5 (w/ iSight) started crashing and the kernel panic message comes up. So when I force restart I get to the log on screen and then the mouse freezes. Sometimes, I am able to log on but then about 5 minutes later the mouse will freeze again. This has been an endless cycle for these past two days. Luckily, I am using my iMac G4.
I tried resetting the PRAM and PMU, but it didn't work.
I tried installing the 10.4.9 combo but it didn't work either.
My computer doesn't fall under the repair extension program.
I don't know what the problem is :[

    Hi
I am not sure if this is where I should put this, but, looked up kernel panics - yours is the most recent one! I had one today, and had not had one for years...
So - here it goes - I'll copy and paste...
I haven’t had a kernel panic for years – but today I did.
    Here’s what happened:
On the internet at the school where I work. Just had Mail open – nothing else. Went to shut down, and the panic thing showed. I pushed and held restart, and it just shut down, and did not restart.
When I got home tonight, it started, said that OSX had quit unexpectedly – and I had the choice to report or not. I clicked report, but nothing happened. So I am posting this as suggested in Mac OS X: How to Log a Kernel Panic
    Thanks.

  • Macbook has repeated kernel panics and freezes

    Hi,
My macbook has worked quite normally up until this point. I have a macbook from late 2009/early 2010. 2 nights ago the only change I made was update the shockwave on google chrome. The following day it froze, i restarted it and then a bunch of text in the background came up and said i needed to restart ( I had my first kernel panic). I researched this found out what they were and have tried everything from single boot to safe boot but what often happens is it will freeze during the apple loading screen (havent got to log in scren) or have a kernel panic. If I let it rest for a few hours it will let me log in for upmost 10m not enough time to software update or run a  disk utility I think. Sometimes when trying to turn it on I'll get three repeated beeps or one time I had a terrible noise like broken speakers or something? I have tried resetting the PRAM but not quite sure it worked... also I have a intel based mac. Any help would be great I have alot of work saved to this macbook and I have assignments which need to be completed.
    Thanks

  • Kernel Panics and Freezing G5

G5 1.8GHz DP. Basically unable to run this Mac. If I try to install 10.5 Server from DVD then it gets part way through and KPs or just freezes. I have swapped memory around and have now removed the internal HD and tried OS installation on external drive. I have now managed to install 10.5 Server on an external (attached to a different Mac) and it will either KP on start up or will actually boot but after a minute or 2 it freezes - mouse moves but cannot access anything - only a hard boot will allow a restart. I've read quite a lot about similar problems with G5s but wonder if anyone has any suggestions that may help. Sometimes a KP will cause the fans to run up to full speed. As a matter of interest this Mac has been unreliable from day 1 and eventually could not be used in a commercial environment - I am trying to get it up and running without the pressures of work!

Bad RAM and dodgy peripherals are the two biggest culprits when it comes to KPs. Eventhough the AHT find nothing wrong with the RAM, a third party utility could and I would trust them over Apple in this case. For some reason the Apple test does not always catch bad RAM.
Dr. Smoke has a great FAQ on resolving KPs and the last step is reinstalling the OS, so hopefully it will be resolved by then.
One additional suggestion. Since he is still running Panther, perhaps applying the combo installer found here will help. Sometimes, the delta updates from the software update utility cause problems that are solved by applying the combo.
I would do this when applying the combo update -
    1) Clone the hard drive, or at least backup all data. If you clone the drive, be sure to test it and verify that it will boot the system.
    2) Download the update, but do not apply it yet.
    3) Disconnect all peripherals except the KB and mouse.
    4) Repair permissions.
    5) Apply the update.
    6) Repair permissions again.
This is the basic process that I have used for all OS updates and I have never had one go south on me yet.
Also, if you can post a panic log to see if the pros here can decode it, but my guess (hope) is that the steps above will resolve it.

  • Powerbook won't Boot--It will Kernel Panic and Freeze Though

I'm trouble shooting a 17" Powerbook G4 1.33. When I received it, there was no hard drive, it would boot to a flashing "?". I installed a brand new 160 GB ATA drive and attempted to install 10.4. The installation went smooth and fairly quickly but when it restarted it would either KP or freeze on every attempt. It will advance past the gray Apple and spinning gear, past the blue screen, and get to the small window where OSX is loading. Once there, the bar would advance anywhere from hardly anything to maybe an 8th of the way before KP-ing.
I thought the installation may have been bad so I attempted to reinstall 10.4. I tried to boot from the disc but would get a KP at the gray Apple screen, sometimes it would get to the "choose your language" box but then mess up. I ended up having to connect the Powerbook to my G5 and erase the hard drive via Firewire and TDM. After it was erased, I thought maybe the 10.4 disc was bad, so I attempted to install a brand new copy of 10.5 Leopard. Again installation went smooth until the restart. Now it will get as far as playing the Welcome movie/graphic introduction for anywhere from 2-7 seconds and then lock up-not a KP. After this I attempted to boot from both the 10.4 and 10.5 disc and it will KP on every attempt.
Could the hard drive, although brand new, be bad? It was formatted and the OS sees it every time it gets that far into the installation. When in TDM it reported the full amount and was easily seen that way as well. FSCK reported the volume was ok. I tried swapping RAM with my sisters iBook G4 with no luck either. I removed the Airport card, thried booting in Safe Mode, zapped PRAM, reset NVRAM---nothing helps. The only time the hard drive seems to function is when it's completely erased. Once the computer tries to access it, it locks up.
Sorry about the long post. I wanted to be thorough.

A quick update. I removed the battery, RAM, top case, and then the Superdrive. I then put the top case back on, disconnected the Airport card, and installed only one of the RAM sticks. I tried powering up and it actually booted. The furthest I've seen it go was about a quarter of the OSX loading bar. This time it loaded the OS and got to Finder where I was actually able to play around with it until I shut it down. Now I have to figure out what was causing the trouble. I'm leaning toward the Superdrive but it could also be the RAM, Airport card, top case cable....Anyway thanks again for all the help. I'll update later on.

  • Kernel panic and possible bad hard drive?  HELP!!!

I've been running my G4 iMac without any trouble for just shy of 4 years now. On Monday night I clicked on a menu on the Netflix web page and the computer crashed. I later figured out this was a full on kernel panic.
I happened to have Tuesday off so I spent my time backing up as much of my files as I could. While backing up the computer would occasionally have another kernel panic and freeze. Sometimes the screen would look like this (http://www.tallgrassrestoration.com/kernelpanic2.jpg), sometimes it would look like this (http://www.tallgrassrestoration.com/kernelpanic1.jpg). Eventually it just stopped starting up, as of now it just gives me a folding icon with a flashing question mark on it. I got all the files I really need burned onto DVDs, but there are still many files I would rather not lose.
I can boot it up from the OS 10.3 install disk, but the installer software does not recognize the hard drive, i.e. it does not list it as a location to install the operating system. The Disk tools does recognize the hard disk but comes up with a nasty error when I try to 'repair' the volume and will not proceed. The erase option looks like it would work, but I'd rather not go there... yet.
So I believe I have a hard disk issue. Because I don't hear any associated noises I am hoping its not hardware related, but rather a corruption in the sector where the system software is store.
Does anyone have any advice how I can proceed? Is there any way I can just use my wife's iBook and treat the iMac like an external hard drive and remove the last of my files that way? Any way I can repair this problem without wiping out or replacing the hard drive?
    thanks,

A couple of years ago I accidentally bought and installed two incompatible modules. I would get Kernel Panics 3 or 4 times a day. When I removed the factory module these KP dropped to a once every day or so. I would suggest you monitor closely for a while longer until we can be sure that both modules are good.
It's possible it was the RAM seating but I'd be more suspicious than that; you could always try re-installing it.
Most RAM comes with a lifetime warranty so even if it was some time ago it's worth contacting the reseller.
I use a magnetic screwdriver with torx bits too, but did keep it away from all the chips and boards.
Let us know how you get on.
    cheers

  • IMac keeps freezing - kernel panics and other

My iMac keeps freezing on me. Sometimes I get a notice that my computer experience a kernel panic and upon restart have the option of sending the info to Apple, other times it just feezes and I have to do a hard restart but get no prompts about the improper shutdown. This usually happens when I'm working in Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects at the same time.
Am I just overloading the system? And if so, why would it allow me to do that? Shouldn't it just run really slowly or have one application freeze, not the entire system? This hasn't been a problem in the past, it just recently started happening more and more often. Do I need more Ram? That's pretty much the only thing I can upgrade. Here are my system specs, please let me know if you have any suggestions for things I can do to prevent this from happening again. Thank you!

Thanks for the replies. Baltwo I'll try running those test and see if they find anything.

  • Kernel crashes and freezes, "google software update" errors

I've been struggling to resolve a serious issue with my ibook G4 1.42 ghz, running 10.4.11, for many months now. It began to have frequent kernel panics, and my first assumption was that it was hard drive related, so in November I replaced the hard drive. I seemed to have fewer panics? but ket getting them, and then in late January decided it must be a logic board issue (I'm not on my 3rd logic board with this laptop), and I replaced the logic board. It started up fine, passes the hardware test without trouble, but still has kernel panics and now also occasionally just freezes and has to be force-restarted.
I tried an archive and install of the OS, but realized after I ran the first disc that the 2nd was missing and that I had accidentally put in my 2nd disc from my G5. It is running, but with the same freezing and kernel panics. I get constant error messages about "google software updater" having quit unexpectedly (also microsoft office updater, but I just trashed those files and it stopped)-- if this related to google software updater? Is that the software updater included in the OS? Am I right in assuming that this is a software problem, and if so do I need to buy new Tiger discs and do a clean install, or is it likely that something else is causing the problem? (Since a clean install means reinstalling all my software, and I don't have the keys for some of it after all these years, I want that as a last resort).
    Any ideas on this?

One of the known causes of kernel panic in portable iBook G4 computers, is related
to the AirPort card; when it, or a connector to it goes bad. When that's the case, the
user can try and see if turning OFF the AirPort in software resolves the issue; or go
into the computer and unplug the AirPort card (or remove it.) I've seen a few online
images of the removal/replacement of the internal located AirPort card; in those G4
iBooks without one under the keyboard, it is much more difficult to access/replace.
And the issue may not be in the card, but on the connector to the logic board.
Other causes of kernel panic may be related to a RAM upgrade chip added to the
computer (the basic RAM is soldered on the logic board, so it can't be removed)
so, when that is a cause of kernel panic; and removing the upgrade RAM resolves
the issue, a different RAM chip of correct specs can be tried to see if that helps.
The 'google software updater' caused a crash in one of my G4 Macs, or maybe two.
I removed it. The specific updater appears to be for use with Google Earth. I have
not reinstalled G.E. since the apparent related crash in one of my Macs. I reinstalled
it in my iBook G4; but don't use it much. The 'google software updater' was added
again in the computer on a new installation of Google Earth.
With an older iBook or other portable computer, it is wise to replace the original
hard disk drive when it gets old and has significant run-time on it; but the panic
and kernel notice may have had no root cause in the computer's hard disk drive.
Perhaps someone else, seeing this, may have other experience and ideas on
how to handle the matter; or a better troubleshooting path, since I have none.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My MBP is Kernel Panicing, and I see the Crash Report is at 107% CPU

My fans are spinning quickly, and the whole thing sounds like a Jet Plane, even when no programs are open.  I have been to the Genius bar 3 times this week.
They keep looking at it, doing disk checks, repairing permissions, then I left it with them for 3 days.  They ran "diagnostic tests", but still came back with nothing.
They finally agreed to wipe my Hard Drive.  Since I got it back Friday night, I had one more kernel panic, and I've managed to update Mountain Lion...but the Crash Report thing is still going on.
It's pretty obvious that the Genius bar here in London doesn't have a clue how to fix this, so what should I do?

Here's the one from last night.

  • Installing Mavericks cause Kernel Panic and after installing too

    Hi,
I worked with Mountain Lion and all was good, but I thought that would be nice to update to Mavericks.
And I'm not good in Mac OS, so I didn't prepare backup before, because believed that it have to work.
But during installation I got kernel panic several times, yeah. But installation process was continued and finally Mavericks was installed.
    I was happy, but I shouldn't.
From time to time I'm getting kernel panic and I don't know what is reason.
The worst things that I can't rollback to ML, because for some reason Mavericks installing instead.
And I did clean install several times, and did cleaning NVRAM and PRAM, but it all didn't help to me.
I haven't Apple Support in my country, so I can't even come to service center.
And my last hope is your support.
Could you please look on a kernel panic log and say me what is wrong with it?

1333 MHz is the wrong memory.

  • Can't update to 10.6.8 kernel panic and pcscd.pub wrong block count

Hi there, as the title said, I cannot update to the recent 10.6.8 v1.1 (nor v1 for what it matters). All seems going fine till the iMac reboots, then a kernel panic is generated. Only way out is to reinstall 10.6.7 COMBO.
Both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior agree on the issue, they both say they have repaired and the iMac goes into kernel panic with again pcscd.pub block count error (should be 16 instead of 17). Re-installing 10.6.7 everything is happy again.
Any idea? Hard disk tests with Disk Warriors show nothing and the HD is journaled.

  • A Kernel Panic and two Crashes since updating to 10.8.1

I've been running a 15" MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) for about a year and a half.  It's factory stock (no hardware modifications) with a 2.8 Core 2 Duo processor and 4gig RAM with a 500GB HD.  It came with 10.5 installed.  I upgraded to 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8 respectively.  Each time a new operating system came out, I did a clean install.  My system has been 100% reliable up until I installed the 10.8.1 update.  Since then, I've had a Kernel Panic and two separate crashes.
I doubt it's a hardware issue as it's never been suspect before.  Also, I've run Disk Utility and verified the disk and permissions.  No Problems there.
The first problem was the Kernel Panic, which occurred while I was in the guest account watching YouTube videos.  The system went to a gray screen then gave me the typical "Panic" message and rebooted itself.
The second problem must have occurred while the computer was in sleep mode, as I don't recall any particular issue, but I found a CRASH log in the logs folder.
Finally, I encountered the most recent crash while I was exiting out of the ADMIN account on my computer.  The system went to a gray screen with a rotating bezel indicator, and wouldn't return to the log-in screen.  I had to manually cycle the power button in order for the computer to reboot.
I'm not sure what's going on.

Hi. Since updating to 10.8 I've had numerous kernel panics on start-up. A restart always worked successfully, but it's getting annoying. I started out by replacing the HD with an SSD. That didn't work. Then I resent the PRAM/NVRAM. That seemed to work. Then I upgraded to 10.8.1 - and we're back to kernel panics.
Here's the log, and below it are photos of the initial kernel panic. :

  • Airport causing kernel panics and kp in safe boot.

Last week I got my first kernel panic in years. It happened while I was asleep and checking an extrenal drive for bad blocks with TechTool. It turns out that the drive indeed had bad blocks and found that the cpu was shut down when I awoke. I started up the computer and it wasn't able to stay on for more than 10 min max before the next kernel panic. I checked here for more advice on kernel panics and started to try to narrow the number of culprits. Everything was unplugged and still kp. Instaled a new drive with a week older system from Time Machine and still kp. Reset NVRAM and replaced pyhsical RAM and still kp. Removed the Airport Extreme card and still kp. Booted into Safe Mode after all of the previously mentioned and still kp. I'm now going to take the drive and swap it into another body that I have to see if the root is actually on the drive on the physical hardware of the cpu.
I was interested in this thread and read all of the links that jpl posted. Airport causing Kernel Panic (?) Jason then replied that it had been solved due to a "permissions problem" I wish he gave more info on what exactly he did to resolve the problem as it's been almost a week now without any work being done for me.
I've also noticed this very strange behavior that might shed some light onto the issue. When I open System Prefs and close the window there is a strange colored pattern that will always flash after the window has been closed. I tried to post it to my me page but for somereason it wouldn't play for me so there's that and the YouTube version too.
    https://www.me.com/gallery/#100008/Prefs%20Screen
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zrTt88YdBo
In addition when the computer has started up and the system loads. Checking Activity Monitor shows that there are 50 or more threads active for the the kernel_task. Inspecting this doesn't seem to show any useful information.
Finally here are a few of the recent crashes I hope that someone might be able to shed some light on this extremely frustrating problem for me.

    Thanks in advance,
    Max

My vision is pretty poor, still cant see it, but...
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
