Kernel Panic and random screen glitches
iMac G5 20".
Just today, started seeing tiny "glitches" in the scrren (like distorted graphics here and there). this rapidly progressed to worse where the fill the screen and patterns start flickering all over, then kernel panics. Can still see the OS "underneath all the "gibberish" sometimes unable to operate though.
I was able to run an extended hardware test, no errors (but this would still happen randomly during the test)
Problem is there when booting from CD.
Did PRAM and SMC reset.
This thing has had it's logic board replaced 3 times already over the years under extended warranties. Last time went well for awhile. Not sure I can brink it back again and it's becoming more trouble than it's worth with things like this popping up.
Any ideas on a possible fix, before I dump it?
Artifacts indicate another logic board failure, sorry to say.

Help with kernel panic and freezing screen?
A few months ago I had kernel panic screens about twice, but the problem didn't recur again for a while. Over the last two weeks, however, I've had two more kernel panics, and the screen freezes (mouse, all actions, etc) and the machine has to be manually restarted about every five minutes.
I've tested the two ram sticks, erased and re-installed the OS but had no luck resolving the issue.
I followed the link on resolving kernel panic problems from earlier threads to troubleshoot as much as possible. I don't have the original software so can't do a few steps, but on the whole have had no luck.
I don't have any external or USB devices hooked up when it fails. I do occasionally use USB pen drives, but that doesn't seem to be related. I bought a new, non-apple power source a while back, too, but also don't think that's related.
Before I bought the laptop from a friend, he installed a different hard drive, but I believe it came from another G4 Ti machine. He left two screws out of the bottom of the case.
I'm thinking mainboard or possible hard drive? Any ideas?
Also, since reinstalling the harddrive, I've had no error report message come up when the machine restarts, and there isn't an error log file, at least not for kernel panics (that I can find.) Before I reinstalled the OS, I read the error reports and they said something about kernels....but I don't remember what, specifically.
If there are other useful logs I could post, let me know and I'll find them. Are the console logs or directory service logs of any use?
Thanks in advance for any help or any advice...!
PowerBook G4 Ti Mac OS X (10.4)
PowerBook G4 Ti Mac OS X (10.4)Hi tjk
- Thanks for the help.
I've tested the two ram sticks
How?
I took out each stick one at a time and ran the machine with a single instead of both.
I have dual 256 sticks. The original, and a Samsung which came with it when I bought it used.
In both cases, the same problem occurred.
How much free space do you have available on your HD?
If not 5GB or more, this could be causing issues.
I had about 20GB free. Now it's running with 70Gb free and still the same problems. It's an 80 GB hard drive that was installed into the PB when I bought it a few months ago. I had the machine for about three weeks first, and didn't have any of these problems with the other hard drive in it.
I don't have the install disk, so can't run the disk utility repair, correct. I've also not been able to get the PB to boot from the disk instead of the hard drive. It brings up only the hard drive as a selection to boot from, and spins up the OSX DVD, then ejects it each time.
...not sure why...I've been holding down option when restarting to boot from other drives -- if there's another way to boot from the disk, maybe that would work...
Have a look at the Orange Ribbon Cable Issue/Fix and see if
it might apply to your PB. Which Ti do you have btw?
This is a really interesting link and for a bit I thought it sounded exactly like the problem...but I have the original TiBook, 500 Mhz so the trackpad cable doesn't run through the same spot. Maybe there's something else shorting out or pinching underneath...I'll take a look, but I'm not necessarily hardware savvy enough to know what to look for.
Thanks again for any suggestions.

Kernel panics and grey screen on startup
Hello savvy bunch,
I recently acquired a wonderful little Core Solo mini. My plan was to
run it starting up from a 400GB hard drive in an external FW enclosure
that has another 200GB drive I was going to use for backups. Long
story short, the 400GB drive starting giving me weird Finder problems
and such. Booting from the internal HDD in the mini fixed everything.
Then it started having sudden kernel panics at random moments (I could
be writing an email, browsing on Safari, whatever), after which upon
restart I get an empty grey screen that lasted forever. I tried
several fixes, and the only one that worked was unplugging the FW
enclosure. I erased and fixed both external HDDs, and things calmed
down for a while, but I just had another kernel panic-grey screen
episode, which I solved turning off the FW enclosure.
I remember now that I had similar problems before with the same
enclosure/HDDs and my Quicksilver. Could the problem be the enclosure,
or the hard drives themselves?
TIA,Oh, don't worry, I know and use all the right protocols for mounting and unmounting FW drives. They only get turned off AFTER they are dismounted. Of course now I realize that you wouldn't think so the way I described what I was doing. (That was some lazy writing, I guess.) I also have several external drives in use with several other computers. It's this particular enclosure that seems to be trouble.
As far as brands go, this is some kind of generic two-drive enclosure I got from OWC on a big sale a while back. I cannot find a brand name for the life of me (and I have looked all over it). I have not had a lot of luck with two-drive enclosures. This is my second (the first one was I think a Newertech or some other OWC brand, which died very quickly on me. The HDDs survived and are still in use.)
As for Lacies, Smokerz, you are completely right. My first FW enclosure ever was a Lacie, and it's still going strong. I have my eye on a Lacie 1TB enclosure that's in Newegg for $99... -
IMac G4 800MHz - Kernel Panics and Blank Screen At Startup
Two days ago, I was listening to iTunes, just browsing the internet, and suddenly I got a kernel panic. Yesterday, the exact same thing happened. After that, I got frustrated and just left it alone until today. When I attempted to turn on my iMac G4 800 MHz today, the screen does not turn on and the mouse does not even receive power. The only thing that appears to receive power is the power LED on the display.
I experimented with it for a few minutes and found that if I unplug the power cord for a few minutes, plug it back in, and turn the computer back on, the screen will turn on. However, as soon as I log in, I get another kernel panic, and it goes back to the screen not turning on.
Any suggestions?::UPDATE::
Okay, I eventually got my iMac to start up successfully, without crashing after logging in. But I still thought there was something wrong so I booted from the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with my computer and I got yet ANOTHER Kernel Panic! Here is what it said:

Does anyone have any suggestions based on the new kernel panic message?

I've had my mac book pro since 2007/8, it's on os x 10.4, and has worked well until last night when the screen froze in a crazy distorted pattern and I had to turn it off. Now it kernel panics every time i turn it on and it attempts to start up with the same crazy distorted pattern across the loading screen and even the kernel panic message.
I don't have the start up discs with me.
I've tried the troubleshooting for kernel panics i.e.
1. holding [shift] when start up - did nothing
2. holding [option + command + p + r] when start up - chimed three times but wouldn't load after this
3. holding [command + s] on start up to boot in single user mode - it loads the logs but with the same crazy distortion and when i try to exit to boot in single user mode it won't do anything
so that is where i am up to... really need my laptop for work and about to leave the country to travel so need it asap - i'm in melbourne and the apple store is miles out of city - any suggestions on reliable apple retailers also gratefully received...
anyone any ideas on the damage/ cause/ possible solution???
i love my mac. please don't die.If this happened spontaneously and not as the result of a software update or any other change that you made, then it's probably due either to a hardware failure or to data corruption. There isn't much you can do without the installation disc, and maybe not even with the disc. If you can boot in single-user mode, run fsck as prompted on the screen. If it finds problems, run it again.
Any authorized Apple dealer should be able to provide service, but it may take more time than you have. -
10.8.1 kernel panics and random freezing
I have a new 13" 2012 MacBook Air, approx. 8 weeks old. It shipped with Lion installed, and everything was great.
I upgraded to 10.8.0 when it was released, and things were still great (except I did experience the Thunderbolt audio issue that ended up being one of the fixes in 10.8.1)
Last Friday night (1 week ago), I upgrade to 10.8.1. I was happy to find that my Thunderbolt audio issue appeared to be fixed, as expected.
However, this is when things started to go downhill. I have now have two issues, which may or may not be related to each other:
Firstly, in the past week, I have had a significant number of kernel panics (i.e. more than 5). An example is included below.
Before the 10.8.1 upgrade, I can't recall a single kernel panic. In all instances, the panic appears to be related to coreaudiod (specifically, something to do with com.apple.iokit.IOAudioFamily). From what I understand, the error is caused when trying to read from an invalid memory address (ie. type 14=page fault; and "Error code: 0x0000000000000000" indicates a read operation). That's the first problem, and it's pretty annoying as you can imagine.
Secondly, I'm also experiencing similar symptoms as described in this thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4159444); where the mouse pointer can be moved around, but the keyboard and touchpad don't respond to any input, and I'm unable to do things like switch between apps or force quit apps.
Interestingly, if I click on my user name in the menu bar and select Login window…; I can login as a different user and everything is working fine for that other user session. Then if I switch back to my original user session, the keyboard & trackpad are still unresponsive and the problem persists. So, it would seem that it is not a system-wide kernel issue (such as a bad driver), otherwise you would expect it to affect all logged on users equally, no?
(Also interesting: the problem has been experienced at least once in that other user's account too, suggesting that it's not simply a bad preference or setting in my account)
Being a fairly new machine, I don't have that many 3rd party apps installed yet. Typically I'm only running Chrome, TweetDeck, Evernote, Mail.app, and Calendar.app. In the menu bar I also have Dropbox, Google Drive, Skitch and Stay (http://cordlessdog.com/stay/) running.
I'm hesitant to jump to "it must be a hardware issue", given that everything was fine for 7 weeks; and the problems only started after upgrading to 10.8.1. However, I'm surprised that if it is a 10.8.1 issue, that more people aren't reporting similar kernel panics etc. (maybe they are, and I just haven't found them). I did run AHT, but it found no problems. I have also run the Disk Utility Repair Permissions, as some people with the keyboard issue described above have suggested, but to no avail.
Finally, I'm also running a similar software combination on my 17" MBP at work (10.8.1, Chrome, TweetDeck, Evernote, Stay etc…); and I'm having none of these problems there.
I would appreciate any pointers that anybody can offer.

If it's recurrent, the possibilities are (1) a damaged OS X installation; (2) a hardware fault, which could be internal or in a wired peripheral device; and (3) an obscure bug in OS X.
You can rule out the first possibility by reinstalling the OS. Probably there will be no change. In that case, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or unless it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at leasttwo independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
Hi,
Last night I was in the middle of downloading a file and had a kernal panic (crash report below).
When I now log in I either immediately get a black screen ( but can see white spots
which are the corners of windows opened) or sometimes I get to my desktop but after a few minutes
the screen windows deteriate (repeatative ghosting like an old 80'spop video!) which then become unresponsive.
I'm figuring it's had it's day now and hope to get a new iMac tonight. I would like to migrate everything but am unsure
whether this is a hard drive failure ( in which case the migration is probably out of the window) or something else?
Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Migration will be easy if both have Firewire & this one boots into Target mode...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If 10.7 or more, reboot holding CMD+r down to boot from the Restore Partition, use Disk Utility there. -
Kernel panic and artifacts on the screen
Hello everyone!
I'm having kernel panic on my 2006 24" iMac A1200.
Also, there's small artifacts (little colored dots) on the screen. Can I assume that this is a GPU problem? Maybe GPU and Logicboard?
If it's the GPU, is it easily replaceable?
THese are the screens with the kernel panic message and artifactsGreetings mig_akira,
It seems your Mac is suffering from kernel panics, and video distortion. Based on the information you have provided, it appears your Mac needs to be serviced. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty and service pricing, battery replacement, and express replacement service.

I have the Iphone 5, and it shuts off randomly and the screen glitches. I have taken it into verizon and had it reset but the problem still continues. Is the only way to fix the problem to get a new phone? Also, why is it if I do need a new phone I can only get a refurbished one when I am paying insurance every month?
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the issue persists, take the device to Apple for evaluation. -
A Kernel Panic and two Crashes since updating to 10.8.1
I've been running a 15" MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) for about a year and a half. It's factory stock (no hardware modifications) with a 2.8 Core 2 Duo processor and 4gig RAM with a 500GB HD. It came with 10.5 installed. I upgraded to 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8 respectively. Each time a new operating system came out, I did a clean install. My system has been 100% reliable up until I installed the 10.8.1 update. Since then, I've had a Kernel Panic and two separate crashes.
I doubt it's a hardware issue as it's never been suspect before. Also, I've run Disk Utility and verified the disk and permissions. No Problems there.
The first problem was the Kernel Panic, which occurred while I was in the guest account watching YouTube videos. The system went to a gray screen then gave me the typical "Panic" message and rebooted itself.
The second problem must have occurred while the computer was in sleep mode, as I don't recall any particular issue, but I found a CRASH log in the logs folder.
Finally, I encountered the most recent crash while I was exiting out of the ADMIN account on my computer. The system went to a gray screen with a rotating bezel indicator, and wouldn't return to the log-in screen. I had to manually cycle the power button in order for the computer to reboot.
I'm not sure what's going on.Hi. Since updating to 10.8 I've had numerous kernel panics on start-up. A restart always worked successfully, but it's getting annoying. I started out by replacing the HD with an SSD. That didn't work. Then I resent the PRAM/NVRAM. That seemed to work. Then I upgraded to 10.8.1 - and we're back to kernel panics.
Here's the log, and below it are photos of the initial kernel panic. :

2.1ghz iMac Kernel Panics and no CD startup
Just got my Refurb iMac G5. Its 2.1ghz, the iSight model. I chose the Apple Certified Refurb because I work alot with Adobe Creative suite and heard that it wouldnt be UB for at least 2 years by which time I will have a new system.
Anyhow, I bought a 1gb Samsung memory stick from OWC and have been getting Kernel Panics(6 in the last two days). Funny thing is, even when I removed the memory stick I still get the KP's. Secondly, my iMac will not strtup from the Applecare CD. I just get the gray screen with the circle slash through it.
Back to the memory, I ran Disk Utility while booted from the startup disk and it showed a catalog error which Disk Utility could not repair, even when booted from the OSX install DVD. During this time period some crazy stuff was happenning, the computer would NOT startup at all, from strtup disk or cd drive. It wouldget to the Apple logo with the progress spinner under it and then just go black and shut off. It did this probably 15 out of 20 times during an hour. I then got it to finally start up by booting into the black screen with white type (forget hat it is called, single user or verbose or safe...?) ran fsck -f, which showed the same catalog error as before and said it still couldn't fix it. Finally got it to start up; So, I backed up all my files and zeroed out the whole 250gb drive and reinstalled OSX, ran all the Software Updates to get to 10.4.7 and am still getting Kernel Panics, and it still wont start up from the AppleCare cd.
My questions are:
I thought Samsung memory was Apple approved, what should I put in this iMac?
Is there a known issue with 10.4.7 and iMac G5's with KP's?
BTW, I ran Apple hardware test( the LONG one) and everything passed, even the RAM.
Disk Utility now shows a verified and "ok" drive when I test it now; yet still I get KP's
Thanks for any help, sorry for the long post but I wanted to assure clarity in my situation.
offtopic- When I tried to enroll my iMac for my Apple care it told me I need to call Apple, any idea why? I bought the iMac and the Applecare on the same invoice.Hi swizcore, welcome to Discussions. Do you have any USB or Firewire devices connected to your Imac? These can sometime cause problem start ups. Try if possible to disconnect all but the USB keyboard and mouse and restart.
As for memory most brands of RAM will work, more important is it the correct RAM for your Imac. The fact that you removed it and all that was in the Imac was apple (Hardwired RAM I beleive with iSights) I don't think it would be the problem YET
I would definately be getting a hold of Apple ASAP this should not be happening and at the same time you can get the Apple care registered.
Good luck and post back with results or if they don't find the problem. Bob :~))

Kernel Panic and monitor light flashes short-short-long-related?
Greetings, all. It appeared my computer was free of its long-running kernel panics, and then the KPs returned. Before the KPs became an issue, the monitor started the short-short-long error warning on the power light. Is it >possible< that the monitor error can cause a KP? I ignored the monitor issue (the top half of the screen has faded slightly but didn't compel me to get a new one), and I do not have a spare monitor to connect to do a test.
Thanks for your help.
VinceIt's hard for us to say. Best would be to run the Apple Hardware Test disk that shipped with your Mac, and see if it flags any hardware; monitor for example.
Cheers!

Kernel panic and possible bad hard drive? HELP!!!
I've been running my G4 iMac without any trouble for just shy of 4 years now. On Monday night I clicked on a menu on the Netflix web page and the computer crashed. I later figured out this was a full on kernel panic.
I happened to have Tuesday off so I spent my time backing up as much of my files as I could. While backing up the computer would occasionally have another kernel panic and freeze. Sometimes the screen would look like this (http://www.tallgrassrestoration.com/kernelpanic2.jpg), sometimes it would look like this (http://www.tallgrassrestoration.com/kernelpanic1.jpg). Eventually it just stopped starting up, as of now it just gives me a folding icon with a flashing question mark on it. I got all the files I really need burned onto DVDs, but there are still many files I would rather not lose.
I can boot it up from the OS 10.3 install disk, but the installer software does not recognize the hard drive, i.e. it does not list it as a location to install the operating system. The Disk tools does recognize the hard disk but comes up with a nasty error when I try to 'repair' the volume and will not proceed. The erase option looks like it would work, but I'd rather not go there... yet.
So I believe I have a hard disk issue. Because I don't hear any associated noises I am hoping its not hardware related, but rather a corruption in the sector where the system software is store.
Does anyone have any advice how I can proceed? Is there any way I can just use my wife's iBook and treat the iMac like an external hard drive and remove the last of my files that way? Any way I can repair this problem without wiping out or replacing the hard drive?
thanks,A couple of years ago I accidentally bought and installed two incompatible modules. I would get Kernel Panics 3 or 4 times a day. When I removed the factory module these KP dropped to a once every day or so. I would suggest you monitor closely for a while longer until we can be sure that both modules are good.
It's possible it was the RAM seating but I'd be more suspicious than that; you could always try re-installing it.
Most RAM comes with a lifetime warranty so even if it was some time ago it's worth contacting the reseller.
I use a magnetic screwdriver with torx bits too, but did keep it away from all the chips and boards.
Let us know how you get on.
cheers

My MBP is Kernel Panicing, and I see the Crash Report is at 107% CPU
My fans are spinning quickly, and the whole thing sounds like a Jet Plane, even when no programs are open. I have been to the Genius bar 3 times this week.
They keep looking at it, doing disk checks, repairing permissions, then I left it with them for 3 days. They ran "diagnostic tests", but still came back with nothing.
They finally agreed to wipe my Hard Drive. Since I got it back Friday night, I had one more kernel panic, and I've managed to update Mountain Lion...but the Crash Report thing is still going on.
It's pretty obvious that the Genius bar here in London doesn't have a clue how to fix this, so what should I do?Here's the one from last night.

Installing Mavericks cause Kernel Panic and after installing too
Hi,
I worked with Mountain Lion and all was good, but I thought that would be nice to update to Mavericks.
And I'm not good in Mac OS, so I didn't prepare backup before, because believed that it have to work.
But during installation I got kernel panic several times, yeah. But installation process was continued and finally Mavericks was installed.
I was happy, but I shouldn't.
From time to time I'm getting kernel panic and I don't know what is reason.
The worst things that I can't rollback to ML, because for some reason Mavericks installing instead.
And I did clean install several times, and did cleaning NVRAM and PRAM, but it all didn't help to me.
I haven't Apple Support in my country, so I can't even come to service center.
And my last hope is your support.
Could you please look on a kernel panic log and say me what is wrong with it?
