Although iTunes is mentioned in the panic log it doesn't mean iTunes is causing the panic. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.
In your case I suggest you first do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next download a utility like TinkerTool System or CacheOutX and use it to clear all user, system, and font caches. Immediately reboot the computer.
Run the hardware diagnostics:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
Some "common" error indicators:
SNS - sensor error
MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
MOT - fan error
See if any of the above is helpful.

  • Kernel Panic in iTunes

    Hi, Folks!
I have a 2008 Mac Pro, and just a few days, I started getting kernel panics in iTunes. This hasn't happened in any other applications. Here's a few patterns I've noticed:
-the KP crash happens when I add folders of music (aka drag-and-drop) to an iTunes playlist on my computer.
-it does NOT happen when I drag in individual songs that way
-it does NOT happen when I drag-and-drop mp3s into my iPhone
-it occasionally does the KP crash a minute or so after I open iTunes--but not always
-a couple of days before this began, I've had an intermittent dull click from my CPU, happens about every 10 seconds.
Also, the CPU freezes up when I boot in Safe Mode. The bar gets about 1/5th of the way in and stalls.
I'm about to do some more tests, but that's where am I at.
Thanks--and I hope everyone is having a great Sunday!

  • Kernel panic with itunes

I am selecting some music in my songlist
and when i click to start playing music
    kernel panic is appear
    it happens many times
does anyone has same experience like me???

Then you have no third-party kernel extensions.
I'm not sure that you're really having kernel panics, but whether you are or not, I think your best move is to reinstall Snow Leopard. First, back up all your data if you haven't already done so. Then boot from your installation DVD. From the Utilities menu, launch Disk Utility. Select your boot drive and run "Repair Disk." If any problems are found, run it again until it's clean. Then run the Installer. After you reboot, run Software Update to bring everything up to date. You may have to run it more than once.

  • ITunes 7 caused a kernel panic - cover flow suspected

Ok so I haven't tried this a second time, but you can if you want.
I was checking out the new grouped album cover view and noticing that some of the tracks on one album were showing up as two different albums. The artwork, artist and album name were the same, and I was sorting on "Album by Artist." I finally figured out that this is happening because some tracks in that album were marked as "Part of a compilation" and some were not. The other important piece I think is that I had cover flow ON.
Cover flow was focused on one of the '2' albums I was merging. I multi-selected the tracks to fix, the bulk change dialog came up, and I set the compilation to NO and clicked OK. BAM - kernel panic.
My guess is that cover flow should have updated to reflect the one less album in that view (I was in my Music Library view). But obviously there is a major bug. I haven't had a panic in a long long time, not a welcome sight. Luckily nothing important was open.

I've seen a lot of kernel panics since iTunes 7 and/or OS X 10.4.8. I hope Apple is aware of the problem and working on it.

  • Kernel Panic's under certain conditions

Is there anyone else getting a Kernel Panic anytime iTunes is running concurrently with Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge? Or am I the only lucky one? This is happening with enough frequency such that I am begining to wonder if this v10.4.7 thinks it is now part of the Microsoft family.
Any input greatly appreciated. The latest Panic.Log below:

LOL! Thanks. Been in IT for 23 years. I disabled the Widgets pursuant to the URL provided. E.g., I'm taking the least path of resistance first.

    3. Widgets
Some poorly written widgets for Mac OS X 10.4 access memory in ways that the system was not designed to accept. One such widget that has since been updated to avoid kernel panics is Ministat. If you recently downloaded a widget, try disabling it to see if it makes a difference. To disable a widget under Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.4.1 you can use Widget Manager. With Mac OS X 10.4.2, Apple has created a special widget called Manage Widgets which can be activated by enabling the widget toolbar (hit the + with the circle around it in the bottom left corner).

  • Post-Kernel Panic: Various questions on iTunes, mail, stability, help!

I recently experienced a Kernel Panic on my Macbook Pro from late 2010 (2.53 ghz, 4 gb ram, 500 gb OS X snow leopard etc).
First, a quick overview of the Kernel Panic process:
I had a lot of stuff running simultaneously, and the system started hanging for several minutes. I then made a manual shutdown by pressing the power button, and when I started it up again, I entered the wonderful realm of Kernel Panic.
Extended hardware test found nothing wrong.
Disk Utility told me there were a corrupt sibling file, as well as about three corrupt record files (I think they were called that - it looked pretty generic, but unfortunately I didn't write anything down).
I couldn't start in safe mode, a PRAM boot didn't do anything, nothing worked. I couldn't reinstall OS X, as I got a message saying there couldn't be written to my harddisk.
I didn't have any Time Machine backup, so a very friendly collague of mine took my MPB apart, and in short transferred the contents of my harddisk onto an external harddisk. I then formatted my harddrive, reinstalled OS X, and am now in the process of putting everything back in place, as well as I can. But I have a bunch of questions and observations I'm a little worried about, and I very much hope someone can help me.
It must be mentioned that I haven't taken the MBP online again yet; I am currently still at work and am not able to get my Mac online on the work network (it's locked). Therefore there are some OS X updates I haven't reinstalled yet.
    - I have managed to rebuild all my subfolders in the default Mail program; however, my Inbox is nowhere to be found on the external harddrive, and I can't seem to find the location of my new inbox anywhere. Is it eternally lost, or can I restore it? My extemely important mails are saved (software licenses etc), but there were quite a few mails in my inbox that are important as well and i'd like to get them back.
    - ITunes seem to have some issues with handling the import of my entire music/podcast archive (about 120 GB). If I select more than approx. 15 gb to import, it starts hanging, and I have to force quit it and retry with a smaller chunk. Is this normal, or should I be worried?
Note: I did notice that a couple of the folders in the salvaged iTunes archive were completely empty - there's only a picture of a blank piece of paper next to it, instead of a folder icon, and the size is 0 kb. I can just re-rip the music to my library, but I am a little suspicious of this.
    - More iTunes. One of the times I force-quit it and then tried to reopen it, I got an error message saying that I couldn't open the iTunes application, because the files were locked, or the archives were locked, or something along those lines. I got quite a scare, but after restarting the mac, iTunes opened as it should. Again, should I be worried? Is this normal?
    - I am considering getting a new harddisk for the MBP, a Seagate Momentus XT 500 gb, as I am a little wary of the default harddisk after this. I figure that since I haven't put anything back in place yet, it would be the same if I had to format and reinstall OS X once more. The damage has already been done, so to speak. Would this be a good idea, or is it unneccessary? (I have ordered a RAM upgrade, so i'll be running with 8gb instead of the default 4).
    - Why did this Kernel Panic happen? I know I made a force shutdown, but why did it go so wrong? I would like to know what caused it, so I can prevent it. Couldn't it handle the extensive simultaneous processes I was putting it through (my gargantuan iTunes library was running, I was watching a video, had many tabs open in Chrome, it was hot etc)? Will the planned RAM upgrade fix the issue? Is there something fishy about my harddrive?
I hope someone will take the time to answer my many questions, and I am very grateful for any help.

The most important thing for you to learn from the experience is that you'll inevitably lose all your data if you don't make backups. Regard that as a certainty, not a risk. Do no more work with the computer until you have a backup solution in place.
The second point is that your hard drive has failed and you shouldn't continue to use it. Shut down the computer now and don't start it again until the drive has been replaced.
For future reference, familiarize yourself with FireWire target mode:
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
This mode can be used to access the internal storage device of a Mac without booting it.
Some of your files have apparently been lost or corrupted. If you don't have backups, they're almost certainly gone forever. It's possible to attempt data recovery on a failed drive, but the more you use it, the less the chance of success. I have no experience in this area.
As for why the kernel panic happened, that's impossible to say without a panic log, but it was most likely caused by the drive failure.

  • Intermittent Kernel Panics - maybe related to iTunes? Something else?

I have been experiencing intermittent kernel panics the past few weeks - the ones where the screen goes grey and you get the message in multiple languages telling you that you have to restart your computer. I have been trying to figure out exactly what is causing them and, thus far, have been unable to come up with a definite pattern. It does seem that I am starting to narrow things down a bit.
The panics seem to occur when I have a lot of program running simultaneously. I usually have Eudora and Safari running most of the time, and will often fire up Power Point and Word. Then, I may add Excel, Preview, maybe Acrobat or Acrobat reader - I think you get the picture. However, it SEEMS that the culprit in all of this is that if I have had iTunes running, the kernel panics are more likely to occur. However, iTunes does not have to be running at the time of the panic (although I would guess that it has been in over half of the panics I’ve experienced). It just has to have been run recently. I
I have done a lot of troubleshooting, such as running Apple Hardware Test and other utilities and everything comes up just fine. I have done all the maintenance routines, I am using Apple RAM. I have done a lot of the other voodoo that folks suggest in these cases. I have read these forums and most of the posts relating to kernel panics are not quite what I am experiencing. (I did read about some of the audio issues that folks have been experiencing and I just uninstalled the SRS iWOW plugin from iTunes and will see if that makes a difference.)
One final thing. Recently, when I get a panic, there is no record of it in any logs that I can find. Therefore, I cannot trace what was happening just before my MacBook Pro went down. I did find one log (I forget which one now) that suggested that before the most recent panic this morning the last thing logged was activity by DefaultFolder. However, that may have just been the last thing I did that was actually logged. I had stepped away from my computer and when I came back the kernel panic screen was showing.
I am guessing I may need to do a clean reinstall, but before doing that I thought I’d call upon the collective wisdom of the members of these forums. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Bob Q.

We had a kernel panic last week - iTunes (v.7) was running at the time, so was Mail, but I was building a photo album in iPhoto when it happened. After reboot (took a LONG time to boot up) We repaired permissions and went on as normal. Previously, we had a hard shut down due to a power outage (don't ask: yes of course we have a UPS, but the outage had lasted all day. when the power finally came back on, i powered up the computer and launched Mail. Then the power failed again (grrr!), and apparently, after being out all day, the battery in the UPS didn't even have enough charge for me to have time to quit Mail and power down.)
Then we began to have spontaneous Sleep syndrome: the computer would just suddenly sleep during activity. After this happened a few times, we reset the PRAM, ran the maintenance scripts using Terminal, but the problem persisted. In fact, once it went beyond sleep and shut itself down.
This week, we went into the System Errors log and found this:
    kernel[0]: IOSMUPwrController:: OverTemp notification
kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
    kernel[0]: System Sleep
kernel[0]: IOBluetoothHCIController::restartShutdownWL this is a wake from sleep
    kernel[0]: System Wake
    kernel[0]: Wake event 0020
kernel[0]: USB caused wake event (OHCI)
kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 52 built-in: handleSelfIDInt - received quads == 0. issuing bus reset
    kernel[0]: UniNEnet::monitorLinkStatus - Link is up at 100 Mbps - Full Duplex
mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en0 (192.168.2.6); delaying packets by 5 seconds
So at this point, we're thinking that the computer was overheating. We've since cleared some space on the internal HD (we only had about 5% available) and also physical space around the unit. Haven't had the problem in two days now. Never had a second kernel panic either...
But we have heard that possibly the fan might be failing... we're still under AppleCare warranty and are thinking that we should maybe call Apple to open a trouble ticket just in case.
    your thoughts?

  • Itunes kernel panic in 10.4.4 when copying to 5th Gen Ipod.

So far the only consistent thing I've seen is that it kernel panics when transferring video files to my ipod.
I think I'm going to have to reset (clear all data) of my ipod.

    All noticable.
Whenever it panics iTunes will not have anything to do with the ipod upon reboot until I remove com.apple.iPod.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences
    Here's the panic log

  • KERNEL PANIC WHEN ATTEMPTING TO BURN AUDIO CD IN ITUNES & TOAST

This computer has recently been fully updated to the latest MacOS 10.3.9
This includes the latest version of Quicktime 7 iTunes 6 and Toast 6 Titanium
Prior to that the external usb TEAC CD-RW (Amacom Baby CD-RW) was not recognised in either iTunes or Toast. After consultation with Amacom the usb cable firmware was updated and all was resolved.
Now having completed these recent updates when I attempt to burn a cd a KERNEL PANIC occurs
    On seperate occasions:
In iTunes the bar indicates ‘writing audio tracks’ when it changes to ‘burning’ the kernel panic occurs
Toast indicates ‘writing cd’ and then commences burning and the kernel panic occurred
Toast also burnt one cd and gave the message ‘your cd is ready’ eject – I did this and another kernel panic occurred
I have run the the original MacOS intall disk Utilities verify and repair permissions but this problem still occurs
    Power Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

so you realize kernel panics have specific causes. The kernels we get on our FCP machines have always been followed by graphics card meltdowns or some other horrible hardware failure.
I cannot begin to imagine why iTunes would initiate a kernel shutdown unless the optical drive is going bad. Have you tried other tasks that use the drive such as playing DVDs?
Try deleting the preferences for iTunes?

  • ITunes 7 Kernel Panic Attack Errors upon Opening

I am really, really mad. Since I upgraded to iTunes 7, so far I have had a total of SIX Kernel Panic Attack errors. I am not lying. I used Disk Utility and checked to see if there was anything wrong, and there isn't. I am really, really frustrated. I can't even open up iTunes without the screen going black and telling me to restart my computer.
What do I do? Bring my computer to the Apple store and let them do whatever? And I have my music on my iPod, but if they had to I don't know-- reinstall iTunes, would I have the same issues?

I have seen a lot of kernel panics since either iTunes 7 or OS X 10.4.8 (which happened almost at the same time). Still looking for a cause/solution.

  • ITunes causing kernel panic when ejecting cd

I have seen several Macs at my job get kernel panics when they eject music cd's from within iTunes. It happens randomly and I can't see a pattern. I delete the CD Info.cidb and CDDB Preferences but that doesn't resolve the problem for long.
    PowerBook G4/867   Mac OS X (10.4)

I'm having the same exact problem. After importing 1 or 2 CDs, when I click the eject button on the bottom right corner of the iTunes screen, I get the Kernil Panic message. This problem arose within the last few weeks, certainly after some software got updated by Apple. What gives?!?

  • Sudden kernel panics without any apparent reason

My iMac (24" 2.8 Ghz) works fine for weeks, then suddenly begins to generate without apparent reason kernel panics (screen goes blank with warning that it needs to be shut down and restarted). I usually resolve this by swapping RAM banks, and it works fine for a while, then the panics come back again. I was wondering if anyone was experiencing a similar issue.

It sure sound like something is wrong with one or both those ram modules,
It may be heat related, or it's not seated firmly enough and it eventually works free. Or it just could be an intermittently bad spot in the module that only shows up infrequently.
try installing and running one of them at a time to find a bad one.
Run the Apple Hardware Test you got with your iMac and set it to do the long test. Loop it if you can (I think there's a check box for that) and let it run for a long time, maybe even overnight. See if it shows any errors.

  • ITunes do reproduceable kernel panics

If you run iTunes and play a song and switch after that into a another user Profile , iTunes from the other user produce after a while a kernel panic.
This happens only, when you play back a song and switch the user during playing.
Does have somebody the same problem?

  • ITunes causing kernel panics because I'm streaming to multiple Airplay Speakers?

Any idea what is causing kernel panics that seems to have started when I began streaming to multiple Airplay Speakers?  iTunes is listed as the culprit in the crash report.

My question:  is there a way to select multiple speakers from AppleTV for Airplay?
    Unfortunately not.
