Kernel panic at shut down
I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro from 10.6.8 to 10.7 (and now 7.1 & 7.2).
Ever since the switch to Lion my Mac has a kernel panic at shutdown and I get the "You need to restart your computer" error message.
I've reset the PRAM and SMC but that made no difference. Booting in safe mode didn't help either. I also unplugged everything from the Mac (monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.) but it still kernel panics.
Here are a couple logs with peripherals attached and without.
How can I prevent this shut down kernel panic?

Kernel Panic when Shutting down or Restarting.
About every second time i click restart, or shut-down, my computer immediately receives a kernel panic message saying i must restart my computer, please hold down... This has been happening for the past couple months. I have looked through my applications, there is nothing fishy that i installed; I tried repairing disk permissions, that didn't help either. I've also reinstalled Snow leopard on my machine once, and the problem reappeared... any advice?
I am having similar issues. I have a MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz with 4GB of ram and it was working great until I installed the Pro Tools 8.03 Version that should work with my Snow Leopard. The computer seems to work fine while I am using it even Pro Tools and Logic 9. However, ever time I go to shut the computer down it has a panic and displays a multi-language message to press and hold down the power button to restart the computer. I have tried resetting the pram and uninstalling pro tools yet that does not solve the problem. "Help me if you can I'm feeling down". When I restart the computer the report is as follows.

Kernal panic preventing shut down after Mountain Lion upgrade
Following upgrade to Mountain Lion, kernal panics are stopping shut down of my Mac from the apple menu. I have a late-2009 Mac Mini. OS X closes as normal but then restarts with message "Your computer restarted because of a problem". I have performed disk verfication, repaired permissions, reset VRAM and SMC. Booting from original hardware disc allows a normal shut down, so I suspect this is software related (probably Mountain Lion?). Kernal panic report from Console is below.
Reading this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4135480?start=30&tstart=0 suggests problems with nvidia cards and Mountain Lion. My Mac Mini has the original nvidia card it shipped with (9600M) and if I disconnect the display just before shut down it (usually) seems to shut down normally so might be display related?
Other than the problem with shutting down everything is working normally. First instance of this problem was immediately after installing Mountain Lion. I am currently considering a full-reinstall of Mountain Lion from the recovery partition and using Time Machine to retrieve my settings etc, although I am concerned this will not work if it is a genuine bug.
Any assistance or solutions gratefully received!

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Hello hotdavesweet,
It sounds like you have exactly the same problem as I have - nothing connected except the TV, permissions repaired, PRAM reset, etc.
Are you using Mountain Lion?? I had to downgrade to Lion to solve it. Unfortunately, a very similar problem occurs with the latest version of Lion (10.7.5). I'm sure that something with the latest updates is causing problems on certain Macs. I've filed a bug report with Apple so it may help if you do the same.
It could be a problem with using Samsung LCD TVs as monitors. Or maybe a graphics card issue - the user in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4316892?start=15&tstart=0 noted that a similar problem on a 2009 Mac Pro was caused by their (nvidia) graphics card driver.
Either way, I think it is something that Apple should address, even if it is only affecting a few users. Apple's mantra used to be that everything just works, but now I cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion with my setup (despite my Mac being easily capable of running it) and nor can I upgrade to Lion 10.7.5. It doesn't work as it should. -

Some Mac anti-virus software is quite well behaved, such as ClamXav and Sophos. Whether you need it or not is not for someone else to tell you. You should let your personal tastes, behaviors and requirements dictate whether you use anti-virus software, within the framework of an educated protection plan. That is all of it. My mp3 player stopped being recognized at the same time I started receiving this message. The other kernel panick posts I have read occur either at start-up or during opperation, so the advice given to those people was of little use to me. HELP!Uninstall avast:

Random kernel panics going on for a long time, desperate for help!
Hi, I didn'nt quite know what to name this thread, but I will try to describe the problems I have with my MacBook Pro here.
I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro and the problems started more than a year ago. They are present under both Snow Leopard and Lion.
Every now and then I will get a kernel panic when booting up my mac("Hold power button...etc.." grey screen). To solve this i usually have to reset the PRAM a couple of times before it eventually will boot and function as normal. This error happens at least twice a week.
When finally in OS X things often works perfectly as it should, but sometimes I will get a kernel panic for no obvious reason. For instance whille doing something in Photoshop, or browsing the web in Firefox. I have also quite often experienced kernel panics when shutting down my computer!!
Over the last month or two the errors has sort of escalated. I changed my harddrive a while back, and performed a clean install of Snow Leopard on that, which didn't help. I then bougth 8GB of new RAM, and did a clean Lion install, which didn't help.
The most annying error I experience know is that I will get the spinning beach ball of death for several minutes at a time when doing real basic OS stuff. For instance I can move the cursor, click a button, get the beach ball for two minutes, with no system response other than the cursor still being able to move. After a while it catches up and I get the regular cursor back, but as soon as i click on anything it will freeze or another few minutes. Fortunatley this problems has not occured that often, but every now and again this error occurs and leave my mac unusable!
I have tried everything I can think off, and googled a lot lately. I have tried turning off SMS (as I read that my new drive could conflict with that), I have performed clean installs of the OS many times. I have bought new RAM, and tested it. I have reset the SMC. The PRAM I reset on an almost daily basis.
If anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this, if it is solvable, I will appreciate it!

Mac Pro Kernel Panic - can't restart
had kernel panic and shut down using the power button. Now I can't get it to start up again at all. Just the fan noise and a black screen and the power light flashes - help!
Intel-based Mac Power On Self Test RAM error codes
-
I am again experiencing kernel panics when shutting down my system. I get the message "Your computer encountered a blah blah blah', the fans spin up to take-off speed and stays on all night. Oddest thing, it doesn't happen ever time rather every other time. This problem disappeared after AppleCare replaced my power supply but now its back. Anyone have a few good suggestions?
1.8 Ghz iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)Unplug any peripherals other than your apple keyboard and mouse and see if it still happens. If not, try each peripheral separately to see if you can isolate which one it is.
EDIT USB hubs and USB modems are the most likely culprits. -
[SOLVED] kernel panic on shutdown
Hi all,
I'm experiencing kernel panics when shutting down. My system is up to date.
No issues with boot.
I don't know what to look for or to check. I tried to boot with fallback image but shutdown gives the same messages.
after printing "power off" (until there everything is fine) it prints something like a stack backtrace...messages not understandable by me. Are they logged anywhere?
the last one is:
/etc/rc.shutdown:line 100: 1761 killed /sbin/poweroff -d -f -h -i
What can I do?
Hope you'll give some feedback
Last edited by virusso80 (2011-07-22 17:30:25)As Stebalien posted correction:
edit: /etc/rc.local.shutdown
#!/bin/bash
# /etc/rc.local.shutdown: Local shutdown script.
run as root
nano /etc/rc.local.shutdown
add line
modprobe -r vboxdrv
You could also test if problem is caused with module vboxdrv, by simply running as root command mentioned above and see if your problem persist during shutdown. To check if you have vboxdrv running use this
lsmod | grep vboxdrv
Then, by editing /etc/rc.local.shutdown you make it permanent.

Random Kernel Panics - No Panic Logs, Not RAM/HDD/KEXT related
I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro. For quite some time, I've been getting random kernel panics with no panic log. They can occur at just about every time, but seem to happen most often as I'm clicking on something. Here's a list of some of the recent ones:
* Immediately after clicking the close button in iPhoto
* Immediately after starting to scroll in Aperture after upgrading
* Clicking on the Caffeine menubar icon
* Clicking on the Apple menu
* During a Final Cut Pro X import
* While shutting down immediately after the spinning bars appear
Again, this is definitely a kernel panic (gray slide-down screen, etc.) and there are NO panic logs in /Library/Logs (the PanicReporter/whatever folder is not there, in either main or user libraries, or even in the System library). It has occurred with NO 3rd-party kexts loaded (verified by kextstat | grep -v com.apple.) and the issue has survived through OS reinstalls (though I haven't yet nuked'n'paved because I haven't had time).
Currently running 10.6.7 on a 13" MacBook Pro Mid-2009 (MacBook Pro 5,5) with 8GB of OWC RAM, 240GB OWC SSD in an OWC Data Doubler, and 1TB Western Digital HDD, but the issue has existed since I had the machine in its stock 4GB/250GB HDD/Superdrive configuration (i.e. swapping RAM, replacing the HDD, and even removing the optical drive have not helped.I ran Repair Permissions and there were several issues there. I then downloaded the installer DMG and it did install successfully. I will repost here if there are any future issues. Thank you for the suggestions!

MBP kernel panics on startup - won't get past grey screen
So out of nowhere my unibody MBP (specs, etc below) locked up yesterday while I was watching a video using VLC. It stopped responding to anything so I held down the power button until it turned off. I waited about 10 minutes and turned it back on. Grey screen with spinning cog showed up for about a minute and then kernel panic. Held down power button until it turned off. Tried repeatedly - same results. Won't boot into Safe Mode - still get a kernel panic everytime. It will let me boot the machine into Target Disk Mode. It will boot from my Snow Leopard install disk where I ran Disk Utility and "repaired disk" and "repaired disk permissions" on both the drive and the volume. All the "repair disk" and "repair disk permissions" ended with messages in green type saying that the disk/permissions appear to be OK.
I have an external FW drive used for TM backups for the machine. A fair amount of data has been added since the last TM backup (which was less than 30 days ago) that, ideally, I'd like to not lose by resorting to restoring from a TM backup. It's not the end of the world if the last (roughly) 30 days of data/changes ends up being lost, but I'm willing to work on getting it back up and running without doing an erase and install and then restoring from a TM backup if at all possible.
Definitely if any other information or data is needed from me in order for anyone to assist, please let me know what it is and I'll do my best to provide it.
All help/assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Faxing results in Kernel Panic?
Not that I send many faxes ... but once in a while it might happen I need to send info by fax ... and since 2 days I have a traditional tel line ... so I wanted to try the fax possibilities inside the print/fax PDF option ... I have the latest MacOsX on my PB.
and 2 times the same thing happened:
I select a simple doc choose a fax number and "fax" the Kernel Panic screen drops down??
anybody ??
my systemprefs are activated to faxThere are lots of problems faxing with the fax utilities provided in Macs.
It appears that Apple forums are very poorly supported. Often, I have received no inputs to a question, too.
The last few Macs I used had fax utilities based on FAXstfX softwarre - all of which have been horribly buggy, in my experience.
Apple appears not to care.
Similarly, in my experience, I and many others have posted reports of the Safari browser hanging (resulting in the endlessly spinning polychrome wheel). Similarly, Apple appears not to care.
I need a new laptop, and I am probably going to go for a PC because Apple technical support is no better than what I can get for a PC, and a PC is three times less expensive than a Mac. -
I use my PowerPC Quicksilver G4 (2.1), 867 MHz, 1.5 GB standart video card system 10.4.11 to scan (lack of driver for my Mac Pro 10.6.8)
The G4 has been running flawless, now I get kernel panics every time (shut down your computer). When it stays on I get blotched video
left-over spots, tearig and then shut down your computer...
I did all recommended software tests Diskutility, rebuild with DiskWarrior and Apples full Hardware test. Everything comes out fine!
I am at the end of my know how. Thank you for any help

Yes I ran short and the Extended Test. All pass. One of the first things I did is Safe Boot several times I also repaired permissions. Safe boot takes no longer than before the crashes and as long as I stay in safe boot mode it won't crash. What does that mean?I also ran MacJanitor and removed the SCCUZI card Apple put in when I bought the G4 as well as an M-Audio Delta 66 card which I do not use (both) anymore. I also started up on an external firewire drive 10.4.6. It also (crashes) does the same thing.
I was hoping somebody understands the crash report I enclosed? Isn't that suppose to say what went wrong?
Thank you again for your input BDAqua
