Kernel Panic at Shutdown

After installing 10.6, shutting down with my browser(Safari) open and external modem connected results in a kernel panic message and the shutdown is not completed. If I close Safari and disconnect the modem first before shutting down there is no problem. Any ideas?

  • Mac OS X Lion kernel panic on shutdown (MacBook Pro 5,3)

So lately I have been getting kernel panic on shutdown, running Lion 10.7.3 on my Mid-2009 Macbook Pro (Intel C2D, nVidia 9400M & 9600M GT) Reading the log it seems that it has something to do with the graphics card. prior to this, I did try to switch my graphics card from the 9400M to the 9600M but it never worked as after I logged out (after choosing higher performance), the system preferences doesnt remember the option and after I shutdown/restart, it went well to the Logon Screen but after I log on the Mac started to perform VERY slowly and hangs VERY often so I did a PRAM reset after so that I could use it again, on the 9400M.
The log can be seen here - http://pastebin.com/mjb9s6f5
If anyone can help please do so as I really wanna use the 9600M GT card for my primary/day-to-day use rather than the 9400M.

Most likely culprits are these. Disable them and see if that fixes the problem:

  • Kernel panic on shutdown - Snow Leopard 10.6.2

    Hi
I am receiving intermittent Kernel Panic on shutdown - there seems to be no common denominator to the problem.
I have just ensured that the memory is bedded properly and checked hard disk connections. Then I've run the hardware test in detailed mode which has returned no hardware errors.
This is a Unibody Macbook Pro 15" - any ideas what I can do next? (the warranty has now expired of course)!!

Given Tech Note HT2546 which states (down at the bottom)
    "Providing the information to Apple
If you record a kernel panic, you can post this information to Apple Discussions. Please include detailed hardware configuration information in your post. You may do this by copying and pasting information from a System Profiler report into your post. Please also include any reproducible steps that lead to this message. Apple cannot respond to all postings."
I find that hard to believe.

  • Kernel panic upon shutdown after 10.5.2 update caused by virusscan 8.6

Hi I am wondering if anyone has experienced kernel panic due to virusscan manager (virusscan 8.6)
    especially during shutdown.
    I have had 4 panics since I went 10.5.2

The panics don't occur every time I shutdown It happens once in two days. This doesnt happen on my wife's computer the only differnece is hers is the latest 2.2Ghz model running 10.5.2 with just a single user mine is the mid 2007 mb 2.0 ghz with two users.
I run the virusscan as I am expected to run it If I have to use my mac in my school.

  • [SOLVED] kernel panic on shutdown

    Hi all,
I'm experiencing kernel panics when shutting down. My system is up to date.
    No issues with boot.
I don't know what to look for or to check. I tried to boot with fallback image but shutdown gives the same messages.
after printing "power off" (until there everything is fine) it prints something like a stack backtrace...messages not understandable by me. Are they logged anywhere?
    the last one is:
    /etc/rc.shutdown:line 100: 1761 killed /sbin/poweroff -d -f -h -i
    What can I do?
    Hope you'll give some feedback

    As Stebalien posted correction:
    edit:  /etc/rc.local.shutdown
    #!/bin/bash
    # /etc/rc.local.shutdown: Local shutdown script.
    run as root
    nano /etc/rc.local.shutdown
    add line
    modprobe -r vboxdrv
You could also test if problem is caused with module vboxdrv, by simply running as root command mentioned above and see if your problem persist during shutdown. To check if you have vboxdrv running use this
    lsmod | grep vboxdrv
Then, by editing /etc/rc.local.shutdown you make it permanent.

  • Kernel panic upon shutdown

I am again experiencing kernel panics when shutting down my system. I get the message "Your computer encountered a blah blah blah', the fans spin up to take-off speed and stays on all night. Oddest thing, it doesn't happen ever time rather every other time. This problem disappeared after AppleCare replaced my power supply but now its back. Anyone have a few good suggestions?
    1.8 Ghz iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Unplug any peripherals other than your apple keyboard and mouse and see if it still happens. If not, try each peripheral separately to see if you can isolate which one it is.
EDIT USB hubs and USB modems are the most likely culprits.

  • Kernel Panic on shutdown after OS Lion install - why?

    Hi,
I just installed Lion on my MBP and restored programs/data from time machine.
After the 2nd or so start up, I get a kernel panic everytime now upon shutting down my MacBook. Message included below.
Other users on the same machine work okay so far.
Any ideas from the report below? I cannot make sense of it...
    Thanks!

Presuming that those references to VMware versions 3.1.2 match the version of VMware Fusion that you have, I'd try updating it to version 3.1.3.  I'd also look for an update for your Logitech driver or uninstall it if you're no longer using a Logitech device.

  • Kernel panics, crashes, shutdowns, and video problems

    Hey guys,
My girlfriend bought a black Macbook about 8 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago she started having the random shut-off problems, crash issues, etc that many have had. So then she took the system to the Genius Bar and they shipped it to Apple. She got the laptop back just 1 week ago after they replaced the logic board and the heat sink. Over the past two days she's having this problem again.
    Here's a picture of it:
After talking to AppleCare for about an hour on Tuesday, they reset the Power Management Unit on her laptop again. They also did a Hardware Test and asked her to reformat and reinstall Tiger. The rep said that if the same problem as before was happening again, she'd be termed a "looper" (which my guess means that they'll do a replacement). It seemed to be working fine until earlier today.
It randomly shut off, or reboots. Other times it shuts off the screen and keeps running... screen goes black, but you can feel the HD spinning, etc. It also had a kernel panic which said "Unable to find driver for this platform: ACPI". Also there was a crash where it was a gray screen with some horizontal color bars. After running the hardware tests it found no problems. After running memtest for several hours I also got no errors. Then she called AppleCare and visited the Genius Bar again, and they said they cannot replace the machine and all they can do right now is send it back for repairs. She cannot wait that long again for another repair. Last time it took over a week and it didn't seem to fix whatever problems this MacBook is having.
Any ideas on what to do? Having a week-long downtime again on a brand-new computer is not acceptable.

  • Butler and Kernel Panic

Has anyone had any problems with the Many Tricks software product Butler causing a kernel panic? I've attempted to isolate all variables and continues to see like it is this program (which I forget to unload) that causes the kernel panic upon shutdown.
I have the most recent version of Butler for Intel Macs, 4.1.6.

Happened to me, too. Butler became unstable a few months ago, for no reason I could determine.
I ended up dropping it and switching to QuickSilver.

  • Major kernel panics on brand new MB

SO here is the story from a brand new mac user (windows user since 1993). I was loaned an IBook this past summer and I tell you - I fell in love with this machine, so much so - that I kept it until this past week. I absolutely loved this so much that I decided that I had to get me a mac.
I am a teacher so I decided that Education store was the way to go - cheaper, free shipping.
I got a macbook 2.0 white Core 2 duo - awesome, 1 GB of ram, superdrive - I was pumped
I got this delivered to me on Jan 23 but due to a busy week, I didn't set it up until Saturday.
Start up went like a dream - until it started to reboot on its own - I thought that it was perhaps a new computer re-cycling system.
Then I get this black box with several languages that tells me to restart. Panic is slowly setting in since I haven't really done anything other than turn it on and register.
Unfortunately, Apple is closed at this point.
Monday morning comes and so do my phone calls. I get this awesome agent (Ashley) who walks my through a re-install of the system disks - it works for 15 minutes - black box comes up.
I call on Tuesday and again get super service from the agents - they give me some suggestions, all of which still do not work _ I know that these are kernel panics but nobody knows why. There was no need to update the firmware because the newest version of Mac OS was on the machine (tried this anyways - no luck).
On Thursday, I got in touch with Sales and Support and am now getting a brand new replacement MacBook within 48 hours.
This has been the best service that I have ever recieved from any company - everybody was super and provided my with awesome support. It was clear that there was a problem and this was quickly resolved.
    Hats off to Apple Support.
    My only questions:
Does anybody out there know why these kernel panics, random shutdowns happen?
Are there software conflicts that I need to know about before I get my new machine?

Kernal Panics are often caused by defective/improperly installed RAM module.
AppleCare could have had you test/reinstall the RAM.
This is a moot point since machine is being replaced.
    Enjoy the new(hopefully troublefree) MacBook.

  • Kernel panic at shut down

I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro from 10.6.8 to 10.7 (and now 7.1 & 7.2).
Ever since the switch to Lion my Mac has a kernel panic at shutdown and I get the "You need to restart your computer" error message.
I've reset the PRAM and SMC but that made no difference. Booting in safe mode didn't help either. I also unplugged everything from the Mac (monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.) but it still kernel panics.
Here are a couple logs with peripherals attached and without.
How can I prevent this shut down kernel panic?
