Kernel panic at start up

Tiger freezed while usage, I shut it down and tried to reboot Tiger (10.4.3), but now kernel panic appears every time I start my mac with "... ... hanging here" message log.
I already tried to repair permissions with disk utility in tier installation dvd. According to it there were nothing to repair. Also tried safe boot with no luck.
I don´t have an external hard drive or other mac to help with this problem.
Should I just reinstall tiger? There are some not backupped files in the hard drive, so clean install is not an option. Should I go with the simple install or archive and install?
I´m open to any other suggestions too. I just want my tiger to roar again. I would truly appreciate your help.

Hi Aleksi_M,
Kernal Panics are very serious usually (But no always) related to a hardware problem. Common cases are logic board problems and RAM problems. I would not recommend re installing Tiger but I would strongly recommend that you take your PowerBook into your Local Apple Store or Phone Apple if that works better for you. Better to be safe than sorry with these things and Apple may be able to save your data.
I also have experienced consistently reoccurring kernal panic problem where I could not get the computer to boot. This was down to the logic board. I took it into an Apple Store and it was repaired in 1 week. (Had the part been in-store they could have done it on the spot)
Hope this helps
Sam

  • Multiple Kernel Panics on start-up

    Hello,
Been battling this problem of kernel panics on start up for a few weeks now. I'm not sure what was going on before it started happening. I may have run software update in early January or so and might have updated the OS, but I'm not sure. I was wondering if anyone could decipher the report (below). I have no idea what it means, but I hope it provides some clues.
For background info, I recently reset PRAM. I was going to run Disk Warrior, but this computer apparently does not like starting up from CDs generally (Command C doesn't work). However, according to Disk Utility, the HDs are okay. Today I replaced the internal battery and upon several attempted startups, encountered several kernel panics. Eventually was able to start up. Then, I updated the software. OS was updated to 10.6.6.
Maybe an odd thing - I was looking in About This Mac and I got an error on its scanning for Serial ATA devices. I assume that means something, but what? I can open all 3 HDs alright. I had some trouble getting the graphics card out in order to replace the battery, but obviously I'm seeing a screen image now...
Thanks for any wisdom you might like to share to this confused person!
    -Jen

Help!!! Brand new MBP with Santa Rosa Kernel Panics when started with external HD firewire 800 after 20 sec...
I don't know what it could be???
    Do you???
    Thanx
    Jay

I'm actually having a similar issue and I don't think its related to networking at all.
I'm currently working in a corporate environment where we deploy pre-built OS X images to machines. I recently upgraded my images to 10.4.10 before we got our first Santa Rosa machine. This image was built on a MacPro and worked on all Intel Macs down to a MacMini CoreSolo. When I deployed my prebuilt image to the SR MBP, it caused a kernel panic immediately.
Further investigation revealed previous builds of OS X, including 10.4.10 upgraded from any other model Intel Mac will kernel panic the SR MBP. Going backwards the SR Build of OSX will not work on any previous model Mac, as any other build typically does, but causes severe graphical distortion, as if it does not have the display drivers for the other Macs.
To make a long story short, I think your issue comes from the fact that your external hard drive has an older build of OS X 10.4 than the SR MBP will run (even though you may have upgraded it to 10.4.10). Anyone who can corroborate my story with some more testing, please chime in.
I haven't found a solution for this issue yet other than keeping a seperate Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo image for my deployments.

  • Mountain lion update and kernel panic at start up

after installing mountain lion 10.8.2 from lion, my iMac crash every time I start it up. I've activated filevault. with filevault, you need to enter the password before OS starts. after I enter my password login, a kernel panic message comes on monitor and system reboot. after this reboot, it starts and goes on normally, without kernel panic.
iMac late 2009, with nvidia g9400 and 8 g of ram.
    any suggestions?

  • Recurring Kernel Panic on start-up – 24" iMac 2.16

    Hey all,
Just coming on here for any tips for a last ditch attempt to resurect my iMac. I have had absolutely no problems with it for 4-years and suddenly went to turn it on and it kernel panics. I have tried everything on here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742 about what to do, and it kernels everytime. The only thing I can think to do is to reset the PRAM and hopefully get something out of it.
But at the moment, whether I boot from a disc or safe boot it can't seem to get past the white screen with the grey apple logo.
Any tips or help will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

I actually got it to start up on the CD, and I clicked repair hdd. It ended up saying that HFS was repaired, but the other thing could not be repaired...
    what does this mean?
-THE COMPUTER ACTUALLY DOES HAVE OSX 10.4.10!!!

  • Kernel Panic when starting the live image (CD and USB)

Hi i am a debian user that is trying arch for the first time.
I have a x48 ich9 mainboard and 4 hdds connected through the ich9 as raid10. Vista x64 is already installed.
When i start the current live image (x86_64) i get a kernel panic. Here are the lines before the loading process stops:

I have never encounterd this kind of problem and i am able to boot various other live distros on my pc.

  • Kernel Panic & Trouble starting up.

So my MBP has been crashing. I'll just browse the web and the screen will go black. It is a kernel panic, but also been having trouble starting up after the panic. It will freeze, show wavy lines, etc. I'll include pictures of the start up screens. Sometimes it takes me 4 or 5 boot ups until it starts up.

  • IBook G3 Kernel Panic at Start Up?

Here is my Problem and what I have done so far. Any suggestions are very much appreciated.
    1. I was on the iBook I switched users opened finder and then it crashed. The toolbar disappeared but the dock was still there. (I tried to relaunch finder did not work)
    2. I did a force shutdown.
    3. I rebooted and it went into a kernel panic at the gray apple screen.
    4. Rebooted another kernel panic
    5. I tried to boot to safe mode to repair permissions. (did not work)
    6. I sent it into target disk mode and tried to repair permissions but it wouldn't let me. (The option was grayed out)
    7. I tried to install applejack on it from my iMac using Target Disk Mode. It told me I could only install it on the running OS
Here is what the Kernel Panic Says:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E1EC4) : Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook 4,3".
And then a lot of different numbers and words?
The top part is highlighted in black with gray text but the bottom is white text.
    Any help Appreciated Thanks!
    JW
P.S. Is this a software issue because of what it says at the top (Unable to find driver for this platform)
I do not have any disk repair software and am looking for a free/very cheap way to fix this. I do not have a hardware test CD or Mac OS CD to boot from.
Does anybody know how to repair permissions using firewire mode?
The only resources I have are:
    iMac G4 running Leopard
    HP PC Laptop XP
I have already taken out my RAM and Airport Card.

    First you should do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Most likely this will not fix the problem but it will assure whether the drive is OK. If it is then do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Kernel Panic when starting from CD

I'm trying to install OS X tiger on a G5. When we put the disk in and restart holding C we get a kernel panic. We have tried changing the ram and that doesn't seem to be it. Not sure what else to do. Thanks

    Which install disk is it?
The store box or the installation disks that came with the G5?
If it is either, then call Apple for a replacement, they are most likely damaged somehow.
You most likely can't use the Tiger install disks from your MacTel.
If the disks are Tiger upgrade disks, you need to buy a full version of Tiger from Apple.
The Tiger upgrade disks were given to supplement the Panther install on new PowerMac G5's.
You really shouldn't install Panther and then upgrade it to Tiger because your going to miss out on security and Terminal updates.
So buy Tiger from Apple, and you'll need to buy iLife '06 as it doesn't come with it.

  • Best Program(s) & Order for Problem (Kernel Panic on Start-Up)?

I started off the problems trying to open a file in Pages ('08). Tried different files and such to try and get it to work, but didn't work. I restarted into single-user mode to boot Applejack to see if my disk had errors again (a previous run had fixed the ones it found).
However, upon booting into it, it hung and after a while was still stuck at the same part of loading (some messages talking about errors). I turned off the power and then turned it back on, but when I got to the boot screen, my Mac kernel panicked, and it continued to do this.
I then tried booting into my OS CD, and although Disk Utility repaired permissions, it ran into errors along these lines:
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
<<sibling link error something or other>>
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
So I figured a third-party tool would probably be more of a help. Looked at info about Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, and DiskWarrior. Would any of those be a help for me? My primary concern is backing up the data on the drive (I have an external drive which functions fine, and enough free space, just no back-up because I figured Apple wouldn't push Leopard back), and after that getting the drive/computer to work, both if possible. Should I use more than one, and is there any particular order that would be necessary? Or would I be better off with doing something else?
(and this is fresh off the heels of a new battery for those random shutdowns, too...)

I am in the same boat. I have just spent half the day researching what is going on with my machine.
I am getting the Kernal Panic screen on startup. Booted up from the Install disk and ran Disk Utility and came across the Invalid Sibling Link, and that the Volume needs to be repaired.
I had backup of my hard drive scheduled for tomorrow but now this has happened. I am curious as to how I can retrieve the information safely to back it up to a different drive AND figure out how to solve this problem.
Is Disk Warrior going to do the trick? And if so, can I still retrieve the information off of it?

  • Frequent Kernel Panics

I have a 2010 macbook pro currently running 10.6.8 that has served me very well over the last 4 years, except in recent months it has been getting frequent kernel panics. Started every few weeks, now happens multiple times a day. It seems to happen more frequently when I'm doing something like playing a game which makes me think it might be related to the GPU or the computer overheating, but I can't find any specifics on how I'd go about troubleshooting from here. A typical report after a kernel panic is below:

Usually these are caused by a defective GPU which was common on your model. You may be able to use gfxCardStatus 2.3 to switch to using the other GPU instead which should stop the frequent panics until you get the motherboard replaced or buy a new computer.
Of course don't dismiss the possibility that the software you have installed has installed extensions that are not compatible:
    com.cisco.nke.ipsec          2.0.1
    com.quark.driver.TetherBerry          1.0.0d6
    com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic          7.0 14922.693916

    com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook          7.0 14922.693916
    com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect          7.0 14922.693916
Try running in Safe Mode to see if the panics stop. If they do, then you need to completely uninstall the software responsible for the above extensions: Cisco, Quark, and Parallels.

  • 10.6.8 Update Reboot causes Kernel Panic

    Hi,
After rebooting from updating to 10.6.8 my Unibody MacBook 2.4GHz is having a Kernel Panic.
I swapped the HDD with an older install and it worked fine and I ran diagnostics on my HDD but it found nothing.
So I put it back in and booted in Safe Mode (where I am right now) but nothing seems to be wrong with it.
    Here's the Log:

    Me too!! MacBook Pro4,1
After running update 10.6.8 I also got a Kernel Panic message (details, see below). I repaired permissions, repaired my harddisk, still kernel panic at start up. Than I decided to reinstall Snow Leopard. It booted up my MBP fine, allowing me to access this forum and reading that others report a similar issue (btw, I don't have Handoff from Metakine, no USB attached devices, just my MBP). In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • Kernel panic after installing additional ram

    Hi there.
(I think this should go here, not in laptop issues because it seems to be more hardware-related)
I have a laptop Acer Aspire 2920Z with 2x512 Mb stock ram and I recently bought an memory upgrade 2x2gb. Any of them works when inserted separately, but when I install both, I see kernel panic upon starting X on my i686 Arch installation (and /proc/meminfo shows that I have only 3Gb).
The same behaviour occurs when I try to boot from latest Arch install iso or x86_64 archbang livecd.
My BIOS is updated to latest version and it shows that I have 4Gb of RAM installed.
Right now I installed x86_64 linux kernel but I still have kernel_panic on booting my machine.
Is there any chance that I can use 4gb ram on my laptop?
Also, what are the ways to save those error messages that kernel panic provides? (aside from just taking a picture of the screen with my camera)

Wait, you mean just booting the livecd gets you a kernel panic? Insert both of them at the same time, and the test them with memtest86+
Chances are your motherboard pins could have a problem. A problem that is noticiable when you insert both sticks.
    Test them with memtest86+.
