Kernel panic cant insert disc

Whenever I re start and whichever key I use when starting I always get the same black screen and told no driver and os not yet set. Ive rescued data using firewire to another mac. I want to wipe the HD and start again with a clean install of leopard can anyone advise me?

You can use Target Disk Mode to connect to your old Mac and wipe the drive using Disk Utility.

You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
Since you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -

Just as final note on this topic. I discussed the problem with the local Apple Repair Centre who advised reinstalling 10.5.1, as suggested by baltwo, before bringing the machine in for repair. I did this and everything seemed OK. It has been running backups for 10 days now without a problem.

    so what
    greetings from berlin

    Greetings,
It appears to be a FW problem, possibly flaky case, or drive problem.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • HT1820 how do you restore the hard drive with install cd after zeroing out all files? when i try to boot install disk or from usb a kernel panic screen appears telling me to restart my computer.

everytime i try to boot installation a message appears saying 'you need to restart your computer. holddown the power button until power is off then press down power button again'. i read that it was a kernel panic. cant boot into any modes but recovery mode with disk utilities but my wireless internet says no wifi hardware installed and sometimes startup manager. this just started after i erased the hard drive and had it overwritten with zeros. its a macbook pro 7,1. bought it in 2011, i think it was made in 2009. it has 320 gb of empty space right now and nothing ive tried seems to work. please help!!!! there is also no os x installed right now due to me zeroing out the hard drive how do i repair it so it will boot to installation?? i can also enter single user mode but do not have root access?

You are getting a kernel panic because you are trying to boot the computer with a Tiger DVD. That model requires 10.6.3 - Snow Leopard. You can purchase replacement discs from Apple:

  • Kernel panic after installing additional ram

    Hi there.
(I think this should go here, not in laptop issues because it seems to be more hardware-related)
I have a laptop Acer Aspire 2920Z with 2x512 Mb stock ram and I recently bought an memory upgrade 2x2gb. Any of them works when inserted separately, but when I install both, I see kernel panic upon starting X on my i686 Arch installation (and /proc/meminfo shows that I have only 3Gb).
The same behaviour occurs when I try to boot from latest Arch install iso or x86_64 archbang livecd.
My BIOS is updated to latest version and it shows that I have 4Gb of RAM installed.
Right now I installed x86_64 linux kernel but I still have kernel_panic on booting my machine.
Is there any chance that I can use 4gb ram on my laptop?
Also, what are the ways to save those error messages that kernel panic provides? (aside from just taking a picture of the screen with my camera)

cra wrote:I installed kernel by changing architecture param in pacman.conf, running pacman -Syy and pacman -S linux, as described in the corresponding page on the wiki, but without reinstalling every single package I have
    Do that step.

Wait, you mean just booting the livecd gets you a kernel panic? Insert both of them at the same time, and the test them with memtest86+
Chances are your motherboard pins could have a problem. A problem that is noticiable when you insert both sticks.
    Test them with memtest86+.

  • Kernel Panic when I insert Snow Leopard Disc

Hi, when I insert the snow leopard retail disc, my mac startup with a kernel panic, without log in logs folder. And on screen appear this.
    http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/282/20111115195144.jpg

The 2011 iMacs were originally shipped with OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard and to my knowledge the Retail Snow Leopard DVDs are version 10.6.3 and thus too "old" for your iMac.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
Use the grey-labeled OSX Snow Leopard DVD that came with your iMac instead of the Retail one.
If you don't have it anymore, call Apple with ythe serialnumber of your iMac at ahnd and ask for replacement.

  • Kernel panic when I insert PCMCIA card

My PCMCIA slot has started having problems upon insertion of cards.
Some cards seem to work OK - was able to transfer data to an external drive.
OTOH, it no longer detects PCMCIA wireless cards that it detected earlier. And, sometimes, if I push them in a little more firmly to be sure their seated, I get a kernel panic. Because of this mechanical aspect, I suspect a hardware problem.
Cards were pulled out of the slot twice recently -- once probably fairly roughly and quickly.
Unfortunately, I've changed enough things lately that it's hard to say if this a hardware or software issue. (OS 10.2 reinstall, changes of user names, passwords, and the abovementioned hardware abuse.) Permission repair has not fixed this problem.
Apple's service manual seems to suggest that Apple service centers don't bother with repairing PCMCIA cages but replace the whole unit.
I read a posting here recently from someone who had fixed a PCMCIA problem recently by reseating his cable to the motherboard. Wallstreets, unfortunately, don't have such a visible cable connection as he had.
Has anyone out there done maintenance on their own PCMCIA cages? I suspect that pulling the cards out may have loosened the connection to the logic board but I realise clearly that I know next to nothing about what seems to be a fairly involved and delicate electromechanical device (slightly kludgy).
I'd be very grateful for any suggestions on how to proceed or pointers to further information.
    many thanks,
    Pat

  • Kernel panic when I insert and restart OSX tiger CD

I have a slot loading imac PowerPC G3 DVD-ROM drive, 256MB RAM and 10GB HD, which shipped with OS9
I have been using it like this since I bought it, but in recent months it had slowed, crashed a lot etc and I thought it was time to get it up to scratch.
I wanted to upgrade it to OS X tiger, but having done little to maintain my imac over the years thought I better get into good shape before I tried.
Disk first aid had identified a problem with the startup disk which I could only seem to resolve be reinitializing the startup disk from my original CDs. So did this.
I also erased and restored OS9 from the original software restore CD.
I tried to upgrade to tiger straight from OS9 and got into terrible trouble losing image on screen. (attached a borrowed monitor to do repairs)
I then downloaded from the apple site OS9.1 OS9.2 and OS 9.2.2 and installed in order (because I didn’t have CDs I just opened the downloads and installed from there)
I also downloaded new Firmware 4.9.1 and upgraded this.
Screen problem resolved, but now trying to upgrade to tiger from OS 9.2.2 encountering a different problem
Insert tiger CD – big X appears and a button to restart – press this and imac begins to restart – grey screen appears and dark grey apple then stops and a kernel panic (white in black) appears saying
Panic (cpu0 caller ox002de020) unable to find drivers for this platform “power Mac 2,1”
Loads of other text/numbers appear including “backtrace” etc
    Until it comes to
    Panic: we are hanging here
Everything freezes at this point and I have to restart the computer from the restart button and forcibly eject the CD with a paperclip in the force eject button.
Having deleted everything early on I now have no other software installed on the computer other than supplied with above.
And I detached all peripheries before trying to upgrade
Been working on this for days and am getting nowhere, can anyone help?

    Hi Rod
Have you tried running Disk First Aid again (from your original Software install CD) since erasing the drive?
to do this should I boot to the CD by holding down the C key and run disk first aid from the utilities folder on the CD? Am I alright to do this from the OS 9 CD even though I've upgraded through the downloads to OS 9.2.2?
defective, damaged or dirty Tiger DVD
How could I test this? I do have an ibook running Panther but I'm reluctant to get that involved as its working fine and storing a lot of my files while I sort out the imac.
or a DVD drive that needs cleaning
It could be this, how do I clean the DVD drive?
Is there any possibility that an "open firmware password" is set on this computer?
Not sure, I don't think I've set one, how would I check?
I recently bought the Tiger DVD new from Amazon and the RAM is all original Apple RAM.
    thanks for your help
    Sarah

  • Kernel Panic - can't start in Safe Mode or from OS Install disc

    Can anyone help me ?,
    Here's what happens :
    1. I press the power button to switch on
    2. The usual grey screen with the apple logo appears but after a few seconds it is replaced by a darker grey/black screen with a message in the centre saying something like 'you need to restart your computer, press restart or press and hold the power button for a few seconds' in several languages(I believe that this is indicates a Kernel Panic)
    3. Powering down as per the instruction just results in the same message appearing when I switch on again......
I've looked at numerous suggested solutions, here and elsewhere - the problem is that they all start with either:
...start your machine in Safe Mode...
    Or
...start your machine from the OS disc...
and I have been unable to do either (the same panic screen just reappears each time)
I've also tried starting in Single User Mode and typing mount uw / (step 1 of another suggested solution) - again it simply hangs after returning a few lines of text...
I have a G4 iMac with superdrive and have recently installed OSX 10.4
Any suggestions you can offer would be gratefully received!

    Hello going:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
One suggestion - if you have third party memory installed, remove it and see if the problem goes away. If it does not and you cannot start from the software install DVD, you will need to take your computer to either an Apple store or to an Apple certified repair facility for diagnosis. Kernel panics may be caused by either hardware or software, but if you cannot start from your install DVD, no further "repair" operations would be possible.

  • Kernel panic at startup from HD and disc

    Hi
My (early 2008) Mac Pro recently froze and wouldn't boot from the HD. I managed to start it once from a Snow Leopard install disc and carry out a disk repair on the HD. Now it won't boot from the HD or the install disc. When I try to boot it from HD it freezes, and when I try to boot it from CD I get a kernel panic. Dont have the original install disc so can't run Apple Hardware Test. But did manage to boot in target disc mode fine and get the kernel panic logs:
Boot from HD kernel panic log:

Guessing I have a hardware issue, but seems to be 2 different problems when I boot from HD or install disc. Can anyone tell me what these logs mean/
    Thnx
    Simon

I am having the same problems as Simon_S, except, so far, nothing is fixing things.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 on my first HD, and Snow Leopard on the second. The third drive is empty ATM, and the 4th is my old HD from my G5.
I can access Ubuntu the way I always have (option key, choose drive, select Ubuntu on GRUB.) I can only start up SL by going to the GRUB like I would for Ubuntu, but choosing Mac OSX instead.
The comp freezes if I try to just start up by pressing the power button, or if I press option and choose the Mac drive. Same for if I go to Startup Disk in System Preferences, choose the Mac HD and restart.
I have done a PRAM reset (after which the opening "ding" is louder, for some reason) as well as an SMC reset.
I've uninstalled Parallels through the terminal, to try to make sure it's all gone.
Trying to start up the install disk causes a kernal panic.
Trying to run a hardware test causes a freeze. If I'm still holding the "D" key when it freezes, I hear a tapping noise.
The computer freezes when trying to start up in safe mode. I THINK I'm giving it enough time. The spinning gear/sun thing is replaced by a bar, which fills to about 1/4 to 1/3 full, then stops. I wait a few minutes, but when nothing progresses, I shut it down.
Disk Utility claims that all of the drives are ok, but Ubuntu's scan gives me a "value" on the error read rate that is definitely NOT zero, so I'm thinking there is a problem with the HD the Mac OS is on. The "value" on the Ubuntu HD is zero.
Prior to my start up problems, I was wrestling with graphics/video card issues on Ubuntu. Those haven't been resolved yet. I've stopped messing with those while I try to figure out what is going on now. I'll leave out the details for now, but if you think they might be relevant, let me know.
While in SL the way I currently start it up, I can't put the computer to sleep. In Ubuntu, I can't start back up from suspend.
On SL, the system is not detecting any sound devices, in or out.
I'm limited on what I can do as far as fixing things. Funds are short, and I don't have the Extended Care. This comp is a hand-me-down after my dad got one of those new macs that are all in the monitor.
I'm hoping for any input or advice I can get. Is the Mac HD FUBAR? Could I format it from the Ubuntu HD and install SL through the Ubuntu terminal? Whatever I end up doing, I have to come out of this with a working machine. Dad's not going to be moving up to a new machine for at least 3 years (his usual time frame :P) and if this thing croaks, I'm stuck sharing my husband's Windows machine again. Please save me from Windows!

any suggestion or help must be apreciated
    thanks in advance

You upgraded from 2.6.17 to 2.6.19 by any chance?
When you update the Archlinux kernel to 2.6.18, make sure
that you changed the initrd setting in your bootloader
(/boot/grub/menu.lst or /etc/lilo.conf). The filename is
                       kernel26.img instead of initrd26.img for kernel26 and
                       kernel26beyond.img for kernel26beyond. For troubleshooting
                       and advanced setup, see

  • Kernel Panics (AFPFS) when using airport discs AND user switching!

    Ok,
    I would love to see if anyone else has had this happen;
I can replicate this on 2 Mac Pro's we use:
We have airports discs (in accounts mode) connected, all works fine. However, IF one user does not log out, and another logs on (user switching) we will invariably get a Kernel Panic after some time (sometimes when putting to sleep or logging on, sometimes 'just'. This has not happened when airport discs are NOT MOUNTED, or befure using them (we are using the latest, just-updated software patch). Any suggestions?
The Panic log (with the memory dump removed) is below:

I don't have any solutions, but I had been reading about some folks having airport related kernel panics in the MacBook discussion forum. As a matter of fact, I had a kernel panic a little while back on my MacBook, and the crash log pointed to some issues with airport drivers. Here is what Macfixit says about these drivers and I quote:
"Bad built-in hardware (including hard drives) Repeated kernel panics can be the result of incompatible, damaged or misconfigured built-in hardware. This includes built in AirPort, Bluetooth and other networking hardware, corrupt or damaged hard drives, faulty processors and more. Examine your crash log (as discussed in our tutorial "An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports") for clues as to which device is implicated.
Sometimes the fix is as simple as re-seating built-in hardware. Make sure any PCI, PCI Express, AirPort and other expansion-type hardware is firmly and properly seated in its appropriate port.
In other cases, the fix involves attacking the problem at a driver or kernel extension level. Again, examine your crash reports and look for components specifically linked to certain hardware. For instance, the following Mac OS X components are all used by Apple AirPort hardware, and can be implicated (by crash logs) in kernel panics:
    com.apple.driver.AirPortAtheros5424(100.21)
    com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.0)
    com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.9)
    com.apple.iokit.IO80211Family(110.19)
After determining device-specific components, you can try re-installing them -- either by performing an "Archive and Install" of Mac OS X, or downloading and manually placing items."

  • Trying to boot from restore disc causes kernel panic error

Hi I am currently selling my MacBook Pro that is 6 months old. I wanted to pop in the restore disc today and format the drive and install Snow Leopard for the new owner. When I put in the  restore disc that came with the computer it begins the boot process(I can here it spinning up) but then I get a kernel panic error. I have tried testing the ram and putting in different ram but still get the same error every time. I haven't done anything to the hardware and have no issues with the dvd drive previously. I have confirmed this indeed the disc that was shipped with the computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Erasing disks securely
Start up from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and select the disk and click erase - to securely erase data click Security Options and Erase Free Space which will entirely wipe your disk, overwriting it with zeros so that no data is recoverable.

can any one help me out here, tomorrow I am going to boot it into target disk mode and install from a G5 onto the powerbooks HD doing a CLEAN install and then I am going to try booting it from a DVD and doing another CLEAN intstall just cause I dont trust a firewire install for some reason. I would like to avoid all this mess if possible. ANY HELP PLEASE, either respond or email me tend0 at mac dot com. thanks

haha oh man thanks for startin slow with me, but we are passed that tested RAM, start up items, prefs, tried makin a new user account, as I stated before I can not boot from a DVD/CD.. that was one of the problems so I cant run anything that involves tageting the main HDD while its mounted. I have also repaired perms, ran fsck, tried booting up DiskWarrior(didnt boot from the CD), etc. if any one knows this perticular kernel panic string and can point out what the conflict is I can resolve it but other than that I have ran the run of the mill check to see if everything is in order procedure again and again.
