Kernel Panic causing my iMac to restart
iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)
Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB
Disk Space 406.5 GB free of 2 TB
All Apps are up to date
OS X Yosemite version 10.10.1 (14B25)
Any idea what is causing this problem and how to fix it? I would greatly appreciate any help.
In the past few weeks my iMac has started to periodically restart on its own. It happens multiple times a day, today it is happening just 15 minutes apart. If I happen to be viewing a video at the time, it will pause then I will hear a tick, tick, tick, tick, tick and then it restarts. The report says it is a Kernel Panic.
I researched "Kernel Panic" and what to do to diagnose the problem, and I have done the following:
I have reset my SMC
I have reset my PRAM
I ran Disk Utility and both the Disk and Permissions are fine.
I ran DriveGenius and Repair, Fix Permissions, Physical Check, and Consistency Check all said all is good.
I restarted in Safe Mode (in my account, not a guest account) and it still restarted on its own.
I first noticed this problem when running: (but now it happens even if these 2 Apps are closed)
Adobe Creative Cloud
PhotoSweeper with 100GB or more of photos.
I have been going through my 270 GB of photos to find and delete duplicates, so it has been labor intensive for my computer.
Can Creative Cloud, which I just installed in mid-December be the problem? On Adobe boards, Adobe is adamant that it cannot be an App issue, but has to be a System or Hardware issue.
When I open Photoshop I get the following message:
"3D features and some filters (Flame/Tree/Picture Frame) require a minimum of 512MB of vRAM.
Photoshop has detected less than that on your system."
My Graphics Card Setup is:
ATI Radeon HDR 4670

To me, it looks like your disk may have some corruption, or the file system (or directory) may have some corruption.
I would suggest booting to the recovery partition and running Disk Utility and seeing if it finds some things to repair. This might also be a job for DiskWarrior. As to why this would occur in the first place, I can't say for sure, it's possible there are some physical issues going on with the hard drive.
If you check the console, do the words "i/o error" appear anywhere? If so, it's 99% likely your drive is failing.

Hi, this is driving me mad, any help in identifying a fix would be so great!
I seem to get this all the time since i upgraded to OS X Lion, am now on Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) and the problem is persisting - my PC hard ware is: 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, the Mac has 4GB of memory (667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM), it is using a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB Graphics card.
The result is a kernel panic, leading to the system crashing and waiting for a remote debugger connection. I have attached the report below.
I should mention that post the Iion upgrade, i have taken my PC to the Genius bar and they have re-installed the OS - however it has not fixed the problem, despite the mac guys thinking it had.
Thanks,

This aritlce has some tips that should help you identify and resolve the issue.
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac restarts and a message appears
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14063
If your Mac restarts unexpectedly, an error known as a “kernel panic” occurred. After the restart, you’ll see a message that your computer restarted because of a problem.
The most likely cause is faulty software. A kernel panic can also be caused by damaged or incompatible hardware, including external devices attached to your Mac.
Note: To print these instructions, open the Help Viewer’s Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear), then choose Print.
If the kernel panic is caused by a known problem, the faulty software is identified. To make sure that this software doesn’t continue to cause kernel panics, move it to the Trash. If the faulty software is not identified and your Mac continues to experience kernel panics, follow the troubleshooting steps below.
Restart the Mac in safe mode. If the Mac successfully starts up in safe mode, choose Apple menu > Software Update, then download and install any updates available for your Mac.Start up in safe mode
Uninstall any plug-ins or other enhancement software from manufacturers other than Apple. If you recently updated OS X or an app, plug-ins and other software that worked in the past may no longer be compatible. Read the manufacturer’s documentation (including Read Me notes) to be sure the software is compatible with your version of OS X.
Reset parameter random-access memory (PRAM).Reset your computer’s PRAMApple Support article: Mac OS X: What’s stored in PRAM?
Use Disk Utility to repair your startup disk or your disk permissions, or both.
Disconnect all USB and FireWire devices, except for the Apple keyboard and mouse. Remove hardware upgrades from other manufacturers, such as random–access memory (RAM) and Peripheral Component Interconnect cards. Then try restarting your Mac.If this resolves the issue, reconnect one device at a time, restarting your Mac after reconnecting each one, until you determine which device is causing the problem.
Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These apps can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test
If the steps above don’t help, try reinstalling OS X.Reinstall OS XNote: If you moved or renamed an OS X system file or folder, you must reinstall OS X. It won’t work to just replace or rename the specific item.

Gratuitous kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this
Ok, I know I probably shouldn't have installed Tiger on my G3 iMac so you don't need to remind me. However, it runs pretty good and I hardly ever even see the beachball spinning when I ask it to do something. What I am shocked, shocked by is the ridiculous amount of frequency that I end up with a kernel panic that gives me the 'gray screen' telling me I have to restart my Mac. I have been able to keep this down to a minimum by pointedly only running programs and commands one at a time with a good sized pause in between but even with that I am diappointed with how often it happens. Call me a heretic, but I think it would have killed Apple to stick with their classic OS framework rather than go to UNIX. I would like some tips about things I could do to minimize this occurence above what I already do. It really ***** to have had to reinstall Tiger about 3 or 4 times since I upgraded and have to change up the screen position, dock, desktop, mouse, screen saver, and reinstall all my programs after my iMac has croaked and finally accepted another reload of Tiger.
I'll ignore the major portion of your post which comes across as a rant and try to stick with the title: "kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this?"
Kernel panics are usually caused by bad or marginal RAM or RAM that isn't seated properly, or by buggy or damaged software or drivers. In the past, problems with marginal RAM for Macs has shown up when people upgraded to new versions of the OS -- which might fit your situation.
Although your CPU is slow, you have lots of RAM, so Tiger should run OK, if the RAM is not defective. You don't mention how much free space you have on your hard drive. Typically you're going to need at least 5 Gig free to give Tiger breathing room.
Running a system maintenance utility like Yasu would probably also be beneficial:
http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/
What does the hardware test for your Mac say about your system? This might help us determine if there is a hardware cause for the kernel panics. -
Kernel Panic caused by Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT after Upgrade
Kernel Panic caused by Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT after Upgrade
Mac Pro 2,66 Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon
driving 2 Apple Cinema Displays 23 (out of order since update) and 30
running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2
Hi I'm Phil from Germany,
and I have the same problem like many others here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1541589?tstart=0
caused by the Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT after combined Upgrade by Apple.
Started with frozen desktop, and ended with a permanent Kernel Panic after a reeboot.
- Safe mode is not running
- System CD is not running
- Apple Hardware Test is ok.
- tried the newest 7300 firmware update
- I have double checked the RAM, and HDD and disconnected all external equipment several times.
System.log at startup ends with the folling permanent Problem:
Previous Shutdown Cause:3
NVDANV40HALG7xxx loaded and registered.
DSMOS has arrived
After running my Mac Pro in Target Mode (Fire Wire Connection with my MacBook Pro) I found the Problem-Folder of the 7300 GT:
File: HD/SYSTEM/LIBRARY/EXTENSIONS/NVDANV40HalG7xxx inside my library and erased them......
NOW MY SYSTEM IS RUNNING AGAIN, but I can't run my System-CDs without a kernel panic,
Time Machine runs without the Starfleet-Background, and my second cinema display still doesn't work any more!
After spending several hours in front of my Mac Pro I'm sure that all of my hardware works fine.
NOW I THINK THE PROBLEM IS: I have to change my ROM-Version on my Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT and install the Firmware 3008.
So how does it work and where can I get this Firmware? Or how can I run an Downgrade from 3011 to 3008?
ANY IDEAS ....or similar cases?
WOULD BE GLAD TO GET SOME HELP!!!!!Thanks Hatter
I'm sure that an ATI 5770 would solve my Problem...and maybe I could save a lot of my time?
But why I should spend 250 € on a new Graphic Board when the old one isn't broken?
Especially when the problem wasn't caused by me.
I need the old firmware, because my System runs with my GT 7300 after removing the software part listed above. Only one of the firmware components that had been updated won't fit in connection with the newer OS X Versions.
I'm also sure that the Problem must be on the Graphic Board, because my System-CD isn't running while pushing the "c" button. -
After Effects CS6 crashes, causing my iMac to restart
After Effects CS6 crashes, causing my iMac to restart.
I want to buy AE CS6, so I downloaded the 30-day trial version.
I followed all the instructions to install it properly and followed several tutorials to optimize it for my computer.
This is what I use:
iMac 27''
CPU:
3,2 GHz Intel Core i3
memory:
16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
archive:
1 TB
graphics card:
ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB
operating system:
OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
we are filming with:
Canon 5D Mark II
File format:
QuickTime (.mov)
Based on everything I've read, my iMac has all the system prerequisites to use AE, and all the other programs that I use for video and audio recording and editing ( Final Cut X, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Photoshop CS6, etc. ), work perfectly, run smoothly and never crash.
After Effects CS6 crashes constantly, causing the computer to restart. It seems to run smoothly, then I start a render and it crashes; or I start a color correction with Curves and it crashes. Each and every time the computer restarts by itself.
I've tried rendering smaller portions of video at a time, sometimes it finishes the rendering, sometimes not.
Hope somebody can help me! Thanks.
HilaryYour post is not much use to anyone. You are not telling us anything about your operating system, storage locations, output settings and whatever else may be relevant. The magic sauce is all in the details, not a generic assumption that this would be some bug or known issue.

About every second time i click restart, or shut-down, my computer immediately receives a kernel panic message saying i must restart my computer, please hold down... This has been happening for the past couple months. I have looked through my applications, there is nothing fishy that i installed; I tried repairing disk permissions, that didn't help either. I've also reinstalled Snow leopard on my machine once, and the problem reappeared... any advice?
I am having similar issues. I have a MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz with 4GB of ram and it was working great until I installed the Pro Tools 8.03 Version that should work with my Snow Leopard. The computer seems to work fine while I am using it even Pro Tools and Logic 9. However, ever time I go to shut the computer down it has a panic and displays a multi-language message to press and hold down the power button to restart the computer. I have tried resetting the pram and uninstalling pro tools yet that does not solve the problem. "Help me if you can I'm feeling down". When I restart the computer the report is as follows.

Kernel panic when I insert and restart OSX tiger CD
I have a slot loading imac PowerPC G3 DVD-ROM drive, 256MB RAM and 10GB HD, which shipped with OS9
I have been using it like this since I bought it, but in recent months it had slowed, crashed a lot etc and I thought it was time to get it up to scratch.
I wanted to upgrade it to OS X tiger, but having done little to maintain my imac over the years thought I better get into good shape before I tried.
Disk first aid had identified a problem with the startup disk which I could only seem to resolve be reinitializing the startup disk from my original CDs. So did this.
I also erased and restored OS9 from the original software restore CD.
I tried to upgrade to tiger straight from OS9 and got into terrible trouble losing image on screen. (attached a borrowed monitor to do repairs)
I then downloaded from the apple site OS9.1 OS9.2 and OS 9.2.2 and installed in order (because I didnt have CDs I just opened the downloads and installed from there)
I also downloaded new Firmware 4.9.1 and upgraded this.
Screen problem resolved, but now trying to upgrade to tiger from OS 9.2.2 encountering a different problem
Insert tiger CD big X appears and a button to restart press this and imac begins to restart grey screen appears and dark grey apple then stops and a kernel panic (white in black) appears saying
Panic (cpu0 caller ox002de020) unable to find drivers for this platform power Mac 2,1
Loads of other text/numbers appear including backtrace etc
Until it comes to
Panic: we are hanging here
Everything freezes at this point and I have to restart the computer from the restart button and forcibly eject the CD with a paperclip in the force eject button.
Having deleted everything early on I now have no other software installed on the computer other than supplied with above.
And I detached all peripheries before trying to upgrade
Been working on this for days and am getting nowhere, can anyone help?Hi Rod
Have you tried running Disk First Aid again (from your original Software install CD) since erasing the drive?
to do this should I boot to the CD by holding down the C key and run disk first aid from the utilities folder on the CD? Am I alright to do this from the OS 9 CD even though I've upgraded through the downloads to OS 9.2.2?
defective, damaged or dirty Tiger DVD
How could I test this? I do have an ibook running Panther but I'm reluctant to get that involved as its working fine and storing a lot of my files while I sort out the imac.
or a DVD drive that needs cleaning
It could be this, how do I clean the DVD drive?
Is there any possibility that an "open firmware password" is set on this computer?
Not sure, I don't think I've set one, how would I check?
I recently bought the Tiger DVD new from Amazon and the RAM is all original Apple RAM.
thanks for your help

Kernel panic on my iMac G4 flat panel OSX 10.3--help!
Hello,
I have an iMac with OSX Panther 10.3. This afternoon I decided to update a lot of the software that was on the computer (used the Software Update on the computer preferences), and also downloaded a bunch of free software that looked useful. (I don't always do the updates because I have a slow dial-up connection at home, but this weekend I brought my home computer to a friend's office with a faster connection so I could do this.) Apparently that was a BIG mistake. I left for a while, came back and discovered that not all of the Mac OSX update had been installed, and when I clicked on something (could have just been any place--I don't know), I got what I now know is a KERNAL PANIC. I repeatedly got the black drop-down screen that has a multilingual message to restart the computer.
I read some responses to questions about this on a Mac forum and another one (www.mac-help, including the Dr. Smoke list of things to do, and tried to follow some of the suggestions. I tried to reboot the computer several times, using my OSX 10.3 Install Disk (didn't work) and then my original iMac OSX Install Disk. I could get the Disk Utility to open, eventually, and two hard disk icons appeared: 38.16 GB Maxtor and 743.29 MB HL- . (The name of my hard drive had been Scribe, so this is not the same hard drive name obviously.)
I chose the hard drive called 38.16 GB Maxtor, chose First Aid, and clicked on Verify. I got this list:
Verifying disk "Macintosh HD"
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extentes Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking volume bitmap.
[in red] Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
Checking volume information.
[in red] Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 6432952 instead of 6432857)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Verify completed.
I could not Verify the hard drive icon labelled 743.29 MB HL-
I tried to install OS X but got a message that I couldn't install older software on top of the newer software (presumably OS X 10.3 that I had on the computer already?). I saw a message on a forum saying to go to Partition on the Disk Utility and to choose the smallest partition. (This is really foreign territory to me--I'm not very computer-savvy although I use mine a lot.) There was no such information and the windows were sort of greyed-out.
I tried to use the OS X 10.3 Install Disk again, but got the Kernel Panic message (same one).
Now what? Have I lost all of what I had on my computer (which was a great deal, including some registered software (Sibelius 3))? Can I retrieve it? How can I get my computer to work again?
By the way, if I go to the Apple icon and drop the menu down, all of the items are greyed-out, and I can't even see "About This Mac."
Please help, and please don't assume that I know anything beyond basic usage.
Thanks so much!
yours in a panic,
Kirinphoebe

iMac G4 with flat panel screen (hemispherical computer) Mac OS X (10.3)Well, with a PPC Mac you can upgrade as far as Firefox 3.6.19 if you upgrade from Tiger OSX 10.3.9 to Leopard OSX 10.5, but Firefox doesn't support PPC architecture in the latest Firefox 4, 5, and 6.0 versions.
For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4.0 & 5.0, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />
http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
But, you still need to carefully investigate if your hardware specs are sufficient for either Firefox 3.6.19 or for 10-4Fox.

Major Problem with kernel panic on new iMac: HELP!
My housemates 24" core 2 duo imac kernel panicked when playing Call of duty 2 (side question: if anyone has any reason why it keeps freezing and the screen getting full of horizontal lines would love to hear from you)
Now I can not start the computer. Whenever I restart, it plays the chime, but then has another kernel panic. Spoke to apple.. i reset the pram.. and then it came back.. ive zero data deleted my hardrive then re-installed osx.. and it is still doing it!! (i ran hardware tests and said everything was working fine..)
The graphics card is nvidia 7600GT
Also.. When starting up the imac, just after the apple logo white screen turns to the desktop, the screen flashes a lime green for a split second.. i know that shouldnt happen!
It wont let me send a report to apple wen i get a window saying "imac shut down unexpectantly".. when the button clicks.. no report comes up.
The operating is a 24" 2.16 Ghz iMac intel 2 core duo, 1GB RAM!
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
Cheers.I had the same problems. New iMac 24" arrived last week (a replacement because the first one had a faulty screen and keyboard). Set it up at the weekend and it seemed fine for 48 hours until I started watching a DVD on Christmas Day. About 2 minutes into the DVD I got a kernel panic, then the computer would not restart. I left it about an hour and tried again. It started successfully, but had another kernel panic when I opened the Dashboard. Again, it failed to restart. I think that something is overheating whenever the computer tries to do any 'work' and then it crashes. I too got panics when trying to boot from the installation disc. Spoke to customer support over the phone and nothing we tried worked, so I've had to send back for another replacement system.

Booting from DW4.0 CD = Kernel Panic on my iMac G5, but not my Desktop DPG5
Hi,
I am having a problem. Very strange.
I tried to start up my iMac G5 using the internal SuperDrive booting from the Alsoft DiskWarrior CD that is the latest v4.0 and supposed to be compatible. Instead of booting, I get a panic screen. I photographed it if anyone could decipher it? Anyway, after 14 back and forth e-mails with Alsoft, the makers of Disk Warrior, and much extensive testing, we concluded...
1) their DW4.0 Boot CD should work but doesn't on the iMac G5
2) it's got to be the SuperDrive that is at fault.
I was able to use the same CD in my desktop G5 computer. I was able to burn a copy of it and boot from the copy also in my Desktop Mac.
When I try to boot from the iMac Superdrive - kernel panic and no go with all of these CDs.
What do I do now? I've got AppleCare on this computer?
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, and so long for now, TOMIf you can boot your computer using the OS X disc, then then chances are your computer itself is fine (good news!).
I'd lean on Alsoft a little more to send you a replacement. You have a defective product, and you have demonstrated that your computer's DVD drive is, in all likelihood, functioning properly. Call Alsoft, and if the assistant won't help you, ask to speak to someone senior, who hopefully knows their job a little better.
If you are in the U.K., you can draw attention to The Sale of Goods Act 1979 section 48b subsection 2 "If the buyer requires the seller to repair or replace the goods, the seller must a) repair or, as the case may be, replace the goods within a reasonable time but without causing significant inconvenience to the buyer; b) bear any necessary costs in doing so..." (Source: Blackstone's statue book on Contract, Tort & Restitution).
If not from the U.K., I'm sure a little digging will find something of similar use. -
Kernel panic caused when saving Photoshop file
Hi all,
Wondering if someone can help out with this kernel panic sitaution?
We've got two Creatives in the office who have recently both upgraded their iMac's to Mavericks 10.9. They both use Photoshop CS5 extended (12.1 x64). We have a Windows 2008R3 server and both are using SMB2 to connect to the server.
When they try to save an open Photoshop file they are editing, they get an error related to permissions. When they try to save the file again using a different name, their machines immediately kernel panics. Here's a panic log from one of their machines that just crashed now. Any solutions out there? This was not happening befor they upgraded to Mavericks, however they did get the file permissons issue.

Help with a Kernel Panic caused by NTFS filesystem
Hello All,
I need a little help trying to diagnose a reacurring kernel panic.
I originally thought it was being caused by Intego Virus Barrier, but that has been uninstalled for over a week now. On avergage, I get about 2 kernel panics a day. I have not been able to isolate why it panic's when it does. Looking at the Panic logs, I believe the issue to be with the Bootcamp partition, but before I go and reformat the drive, I wanted to check with the community to see if there was anything I can do. I have not launched into Bootcamp in probably over 2 months, but the panics started about 2 weeks ago.
I have performed the Extended Apple Hardware test several times and there seems to be no issue.
The consistant item in all the logs is
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.filesystems.ntfs(3.4)@0x14da000->0x1539fff
Any insight is appreaciated.
Thanks,
-Ben

Thanks for the response. I actually did not intend to post this in the Windows Software Category. I'm not sure how it ended up there as I thought I was in the MacBookPro discussion area.
So, I am running Mac OS 10.6.7 and get these panics. I have neither VirusBarrier or Little Snitch installed.
The kernel extension com.apple.filesystems.ntfs is what I am assuming is the culprit as it is consistantly listed in the backtrace.
I have read both of the mentioned articles. I do not seem to get the Kernel Panics when booted in safe mode, but I assume that is because the com.apple.filesystems.ntfs is not loaded when in safe mode and the Boot Camp partition does not mount (and cannot be).
So if Apple Hardware Test shows the drive as being healthy. The panic also mentions the active thread as mds. So I'm guessing that Spotlight is trying to index the NTFS partition and something in the middle is getting angry and causing the panics. Without re-formatting, is there any way to re-install just the Bootcamp extenisions for Mac OS X?
Or am I off base here? -
Help me with GSOD and kernel panic on 24" imac!
im sorry if this is the wrong place for this.
also sorry if the answers to my questions are somewhere on this board.
However, i have looked all over the internet and everywhere and found no solution.
it seems simple enough.. here goes!
one day, computer freezes, i get a msg saying please restart your computer blah blah in the middle of the screen
looked like this from memory
http://i44.tinypic.com/2n1gvf4.jpg
then it wouldnt turn on at all.
a few days later it turned on, power on, but didnt load up.
just the grey screen with the apple and the spinning wheel.
i dont know what version os i was running but it must be something 10.5 something?
i went out and purchased snowleopard as i dont have any of my original cd's
hoping it cud help me install a new os.
put the cd in but it didnt run, tried pressing c after turn on but wudnt boot from cd drive.
and the cd wont eject either.
please help me! i need my computer back for uni asap!

Go here for help to Resolving Kernel Panics
To eject the disc, try starting up while holding down the mouse. If that doesn't help, startup while holding down the Eject key ⏏
Try starting up while holding down the Option key which should prompt the Startup Manager window. Select MacintosHD 10.x.x

Kernel Panic -- Graphics chip error! Restarted.
Anyone out there seen ridiculous gfx card/kernel errors with Adobe CS2? My machine runs weird every time that I use Photoshop or Illustrator. Batches don't finish, and I have even been getting kernel panics lately. I would post it to Adobe, but kernel panics and hardware errors fall into Apple's domain. Hardware/Software/OS is fine for all but CS2, including opengl/coreimage/corevideo apps. I have a quad g5 with an nvidia 6800 GT gfx card with dual cinema displays and a wacom tablet. OSX is up-to-date, as is CS2.
Here's a snippet from my rather scary system log for yesterday, when I was attempting to run a batch process in illustrator...my logs are peppered with graphics chip errors every time that I use CS2. Any options other than wait for a new gfx driver from Apple or keep re-running the hardware tests?
